Southern Comfort Kitchen has a drive-thru? I'm writing this review to share for those exploring Alameda Island that Southern Comfort Kitchen has a few locations throughout the East Bay (and many may know this restaurant for its food truck), but they now has a new(er) location in Alameda. As a parent, I never knew how much I would appreciate a drive-thru at spots like Walgreens, Starbucks, and now, an actual restaurant! It's the little things sometimes that really help to take the heavy lift off, while giving back the flexibility and energy to the driver :) While I can't speak for the interior of the restaurant, we did roll through the drive-thru to test it out over the weekend while exploring Alameda and all of its charm. On a Saturday evening it seemed like they were pretty swamped, and no one was responding at the drive-thru window so we figured maybe it was closed. We pulled up and my husband got out of the car to confirm before we pulled away with a worker inside the restaurant and they apologized. Almost immediately someone came to the window and gave us printed menus because we had already passed the digital menu part of the drive-thru. We ordered hush puppies, a fried shrimp po' boy sandwich, mac n' cheese, and bread pudding. Oh wee, we had a feast when we arrived home and reheated everything! I think they may still be working out some kinks, but I'm open to trying the drive-thru again next time we're in town post brewery fun. A drive-thru in the East Bay for Cajun bites? Very cool! Soooo I ordered through DoorDash. This was one of those meals that makes you just wish you'd have cooked at home. Seriously. I've had far larger catfish portions for $20, and the catfish? Nothing Southern about it. The cornmeal batter was the most southern thing about it because the flavor? It should be on the back of a milk carton. In Alameda, I find it hard to find good food outside of Asian food. Asian cuisine is winning here, but that wasn't on the menu tonight. Hence my utter disappointment, and I should have known better once I saw bread crumbs included in the menu photos for the Mac and cheese. It just isn't for me. I didn't finish the meal, and the Mac and cheese just isn't the style that I prefer. The best thing in my plate were the four shrimp. This place is not it for Cajun food or food in general. Being from the south, I was super excited to try this spot, but nothing was good about it. I ordered to-go blackened fish platter with red beans and rice, and a chicken sandwich with fries. It took 30 min for the food to come out and when I opened the fish, it wasn't even slightly warm (mmm, room temperature fish!). What's more disappointing is that everything was severely overcooked and dry and nothing tasted remotely Cajun or appetizing. This place isn't exactly cheap, either. And all I can say about the ambience is it's got a cafeteria vibe. Anyway, I gave it two stars because the front people are at least friendly, but I in no way, shape or form recommend this restaurant. read more

I placed the order via door dash for pick up so I can't speak too much to the service but I could see the kitchen may have been overwhelmed once we arrived to grab our order. That said, the food was on point! The shrimp in the classic po boy was cooked to absolute perfection. Crispy on the outside with succulent, juicy shrimp on the inside. The bread tasted fresh and came with a good balance of sauce, tomato, and pickles. The crab fries were well portioned and TASY!! I will definitely be back for these! read more

Yep, Southern Comfort is a solid 4. I had spent 10 days in Alameda and was looking for something different and interesting. This was it. I am a southern boy and love my Cajun food. I was really busy while in town and was thrilled that Grubhub delivered to my address. I ordered fried catfish ans shrimp. The catfish was mild sand perfectly seasoned, The ship was also good, but wish I had tarter sauce. Maybe I missed is. My son wanted Etoufee', but unfortunately, it dropped off of the menu later in the day. We got the seafood gumbo instead and it did not disappoint. While you won't be fooled into thinking you're in Coop's, in New Orleans, the food at Alameda's own Southern Comfort Kitchen is a loving reminder to our times in the Big Easy. The fried oyster po-boy was an excellent execution of the dish, although the hush puppies were a little more like Jiffy corn muffins than I remember from Bourbon Street. The very basic, even austere, cafeteria setting reminds me of family-run places down south. Everything that we tried, and the very helpful and personable staff, makes it easy to return. read more

I've been many times and the last was an off day, I noticed new cook was there. I got an oyster poor boy, it was loaded with oysters which is a plus, my only complaint, it was overwhelmed by too much sauce drowning the flavors of the whole sandwich. I ordered to go and was excited when I opened the lid but was then disappointed when I started eating. While it was flavorful there was not one piece of crawfish in the pasta which basically defeated the purpose of ordering. Took advantage of an UBER special at lunch time recently. This was the first time trying this place and the first-time hearing about them. Bad the hushpuppies and the chicken sandwich. Everything was cooked perfectly and arrived at home crispy and perfect texture (carryout w/ a personal bag that lets the steam escape). They use paper containers which doesn't hold in the heat, but nothing arrives soggy either. The slaw was tasty; the puppies were dense cornmeal (not pancake-like balls). Did anything come with strong flavors? No. It was all lite but seasoned (aka salt balanced). It tasted fresh and suitable for lunch or picnic. From the slaw, to chicken, to buns and hushpuppies - it tasted like what the components are - not like any particular seasoning. Had a few sauces and they added flavor but nothing bold, at least not the ones I had. It feels comparable to Brenda's and the nicer tourist spots of New Orleans. I can't say anything about the full menu, but what I had was well-cooked and tasty and held up really well to eat at home. If high-punch flavor or heat is desired built-in, it doesn't seem like the right place with those expectations. We do like spicy and bold flavors, and we were ready for it either way. I rolled there today for Dinner and walked in . They were Busy as they have a Drive thru also. They seemed Over Whelmed with the Door Dash Orders . Some of the Kitchen Staff seemed undertrained. Their front Counter staff were stressed out and let the Door Dash Drivers know it . When it was my turn I Ordered a Large Bowl of Gumbo and Catfish and Fries Platter!!! My Order was 113 I waited 30 Minutes for my order and people that ordered after me were getting the orders before me WTF? Dining Room was pretty Dirty!!! Floors needed to be Swept and Tables wiped down. It was Night and Day from their Castro Valley Location!!! When I did get my food ! The Gumbo was Good!!! Just could have been hotter. Ive been here once before while working out in alameda and i fell in love with everything! i came in tonight after work super excited to come here again and have my significant other try this out because he is more of a foodie than me. got there about 9:45 ordered a bit of everything to try and waited about 5 minutes for our food once we got to the window. it's unfortunate to say my 3 stars are due to the very tall gentleman at the window who seemed annoyed at the fact we were there even though they close at 11..... i remembered his friendly face from last time i came here but he was so rude this time... as we finished ordering i said thank you and he forgot to stop the intercom and i heard what he had to say about us "mannn why the f** do people" etc i couldnt catch the rest but i was so shocked at that to begin with.... like wow how rude couldnt even wait to let go of the button before talking smack. once we pulled up i paid, he was kind for a bit and then back to the bitter attitude. he forgot my drink until i had to ask for it , forgot my straw so i asked him for it and then i proceeded to check the bag to make sure there were forks and he had already closed the window, when i got his attention he looked SOOO bothered it made me uncomfortable. i even threw in a "im sorry if its not too much to ask can i get a fork" and he handed me them and proceeded to slam the window in my face loudly. definitely didnt shut casually because the first time it didnt slam like that. overwll the food is so delicious but next time i'll save myself the trip across the bridge. wont be coming back to this location at all. My dining buddy took me to the Alameda's Southern Comfort Kitchen. More parking as compared to the Castro Valley store. Equally friendly staff and comparable menu. My go to menu item is the fried oysters and red beans & rice. Ordinarily at the CV ordering the fried oysters without fries, they offer an extra oyster in its place, here they offer side items such as salad the eventually discovered they were out so they offered several oysters as an accommodation. I guess it worked out well at the end. Having the oysters and red beans & rice was definitely too much for my appetite. So leftover they became. Overall friendly staff, speedy food delivery, the only knock is better ventilation as it was a warm day and the dining room was warm and stuffy. I would return if I'm in the neighborhood. read more

Horrible customer service and the food was horrible, yesterday was my first and last time going to this restaurant. The Castro Valley location is better. First thing I noticed when I walked in the restaurant that there was no staff at the counter to greet me. The woman that took my order was also cooking dropping fish in the grease. While I was waiting for a staff to take my order, another customer complained about her food sitting on the counter for 15 minutes and no one called her number so they had to remake the lady a fresh batch of fish and shrimp. I love southern cooking. Don't know if this case it's the location or the style. Jambalaya and a shrimp po boy. The po boy was very good and had a nice kick to it. Shrimp was really on the salty side. The bread was little off but it's passable. Jambalaya looked promising and it's good but I do feel like salt upstages everything. The chicken and the sausage were there, not much sausage. The peppers and celery were there. Service was straightforward as I was only picking up the food. A little too strong with the salt. I love Southern food, and I definitely enjoyed my experience at Southern Comfort Kitchen! The restaurant has a mid-size space with a few seating on a first-come-first-served basis. Their brown sugar lemonade was absolutely delicious--I was obsessed with it. It may not look like much in the picture I attached, but trust me, it's really good. My friend and I wanted to try everything on their menu, but since it was just the two of us, we settled on three dishes: Fried Catfish with Cajun Fries, Seafood Gumbo, and the Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich. The fried catfish was good, although I felt there was more breadcrumb than fish. However, the Cajun fries were fried perfectly and tasted amazing. Although I'm not usually a big fan of gumbo, I actually enjoyed theirs--it was flavorful and satisfying. The highlight for me was definitely the Fried Chicken Sandwich. The chicken was packed with flavor, incredibly juicy, and each bite left me wanting more. I've been there twice, and wait times are about 10-15 mins. Of course it depends on how busy they are. I have seen customers leaving with 2-3 big bags of food. So this restaurant chain probably has a lot of fans already. Okay, my first visit was Friday night, Oct 4, around 9pm. I had to wait while a customer placed a huge order. I ordered the "50/50 Shrimp and Catfish w/ Cajun Fries." I took my order home and discovered they forgot the Cajun Fries. I drove back to the restaurant and asked for my fries. The young man at the counter said my order doesn't include Cajun Fries. He said there's a glitch in their new computer system that makes that mistake. I told him the menu says "with fries," my receipt says "with fries," and the order taker asked me how I wanted my fries (hard or soft). Then a voice from the back said "give him the fries." Folks, check your order before you leave. But how was the food? "50/50 Shrimp and Catfish w/ Cajun Fries" was very good! The Shrimp and Catfish were fresh and tasty. No fishy smell. The catfish meat was flaky and firm. The cornmeal batter had just the right seasoning. It's not salty. Those Cajun fries were excellent. They were worth going back for. Grade (5/5) for the food, Grade (2/5) for the service. My second visit was on a very warm Sunday. It was 12-noon, and temps were near 90*F. I met up with another Yelp Elite for lunch. I wanted to share opinions and observations about this place. Brett, the owner, was taking orders and thanking us for coming. The kitchen looked very busy. I ordered: "Crab Cajun Fries," Carrot Cake, and Unsweetened Ice Tea. The crab was fresh, moist, and not fishy. The Cajun Fries gave the dish a mildly salty taste. The carrot cake was moist, fresh, and the taste was perfect. The unsweetened tea needs to be a bit stronger to stand up to the ice. Food (4/5), Service (4/5), Decor (4/5). Large serving blacken brussels sprouts thin as paper with sea salt, pepper & maple syrup drizzle, crispy as chips. Sprouts dehydrated, lacks fibre crunch. Innovative technique utilized.. Boneless rainbow trout ( wild?) flaky, tender, moist with sweet notes from being atop sprouts. Blacken with constant spooning of butter on both sides when flipped. Probably dipped in marinate of paprika, dry mustard, cayenne pepper, cumin, black pepper, white pepper, dry thyme, & salt before being braised/grilled. 4.5 stars yum. Me and my girl came here on a non-busy afternoon. Place seemed rather dark, not here for that. Here for the food! Employees were friendly! That's a great start. Food review: 1. Side Mac and cheese - shells were al dente, seasonings and the cheese sauce consistency were up there. Overall a good side item! 2. Quarter Muffaletta - my girl loved this one and the Crab Cajun Fries! The olive tapenade was nice and chunky. Salami and BF Ham was a good ratio with the cheese, Foccacia bread is nice and fluffy. 3. Crab Cajun Fries - the seasoning was pretty spot on on the fries, but as we kept eating the fries, it got saltier. The sauce we thought was a blend of cheese and mayo, wasn't cheese at all. Oh wells, the flavors were there. Crab ratio with the fries, it was only on top of the fries, we were hoping for more once we dug in middle, but nope. Its good though, that's what mattered. 4. Side portion Crawfish Etouffee, the thickness of the gravy were there. Fluffy rice is a plus. Flavors were spot on...BUT WHERE'S THE CRAWFISH?!?! I had about 1 piece crawfish maybe 2...and a half at the most. The chunks included in the gravy were vegetables and herbs. Do they make this gravy in a big batch? Or to order? I don't know, but the crawfish ratio needs to be more than less than 3 pieces. 5. Entree portion Seafood Gumbo - again fluffy rice, good job! BUT hmm...man this had no flavor at all. 2 pieces of shrimp, and 2 pieces of (maybe fish) but the consistency of chicken in a bowl full of watered down black roux gravy that happened to have no flavor. We did not enjoy this one. I've had better Gumbo/Gumbo-like dishes elsewhere. Overall experience was good! The food...most hit, some didn't. Will definitely try coming back again. Not soon, but someday. But at the same time, the prices on the menu were like coming to a low end steakhouse joint. Portions were a bit skimp. Big potential. This site used to be Der Weinerschnitzel, then Kowloon Station 1. Menu board is mounted above the counter. Okay I have a neck problem staring at that menu board for more than five minutes. It is a strain on my neck. So I have to wing it and tell the employee/owner Brett that I am ordering the shrimp and grits and unsweetened tea. However, I did see a menu on the counter near the cash register. I should've looked there. Seating capacity indoor: guesstimate 30 people. The front entrance has two steps to the front door. There is a side entrance, glass door leading from the parking lot. I believe that entrance is wheelchair assessible. There is an outdoor patio situated between Subway and Southern Comfort. Specialties: appetizers and sides, New Orleans menu items ranging from seafood, chicken, po boys, sandwiches, salads, desserts (beignets on Sundays only, bread pudding and carrot cake) and an assortment founain drinks and three types of teas - sweetened, unsweetened and brown sugar lemonade. Eats and beverage: blackened shrimp and grits with unsweetened tea. Shrimp and grits were tasty, but I had better elsewhere. The texture of the grits was too cheesy, smooth but not creamy enough (3.5 stars). The iced tea was slightly underwhelming. It needed to be stronger. (3 stars) Per my yelp friend, he enjoyed the Cajun crab fries and carrot cake. Crab was fresh and the fries seasoned with garlic. Carrot cake was moist and I imagine it was delicious. Service was very good. Brett, the owner, was friendly and helpful. Also I don't want to forget mentioning that a customer has the option of dining with stainless steel silverware and a dinner plate (not paper). (4 stars) There is only one flatscreen to watch football game. Plenty artwork on the walls. Ambiance is comfy and casual. Finally, Southern Comfort Kitchen is a welcome addition to the Alameda community. Return visit: Yes, mos def and I am not talking about the rap singer. So, I was so excited to see that they are in Alameda and a drive thru is just the icing on the cake. My drive thru experience was great. I ordered a gumbo and crawfish etouffee. We also ordered a 50/50 which was delicious. The only reason I took one star off was because the etouffee didn't have hardly any crawfish but great flavor. Sometimes I crave a really good crispy catfish plate and this place helps me fill that craving! I grew up eating catfish made by my Louisiana fam so I am a bit picky about my fried catfish. I've been in love with their food truck for quite some time, so to hear that they were opening a location down the street from me was fantastic news! They recently moved into what once housed a Wienerschnitzel and then after that for a short time, Kowloon Station. The decor needs work but each day I walk by, I see they are really sprucing the place up and making it their own! Yay! Items I've had so far and loved: - Who Dat Chicken Strips: that sauce is to die for and chicken is tender! - Lil Weezy Chicken Strips: think Wingstop Buffalo Lemon Pepper and then times that taste by 100. - Crawfish Etoufee - Southern Chicken Sandwich: big, juicy, good proportions - Cajun Fries: so crispy and good! Good portion! - Blackened Shrimp w/ seasoned rice - Seafood Gumbo: good amount of seafood! Love that it comes with rice (as it should but some other places of the same cuisine seem to forget this) I went yesterday, but I had to try it again today. Place was filled with seated customers. Good music playing at a good volume. Staff was so nice when I went to pick up my food. Food was delicious as I ate it at home. Can't wait to frequent this place more often and wish it great success! Customer service was amazing ! The flavor was on point ! We got the seafood gumbo and shrimp and grits . Flavor wise 5/5 I would have preferred if the food was a bit more warm/hot . It was kind of cold ,the bread could have been a bit more warm as well. The bread pudding was so good I forgot to take a before picture haha . I def will be back again soon ! I love the drive through option too read more
