Ambiance felt modern and chic given the decorations and lighting which matched the overall vibes of the restaurant. Menu had a decent selection of dishes - nothing too standout as a typical American restaurant. The entree I got was okay, expensive and tasted fine. Overall, nothing special though. I probably wouldn't come back here again, but I had a fine meal with my friend. The price and quality just didn't match for me though and I probably would opt to eat somewhere else. read more

All the meals, by fabulous Executive Chef Jason Bond, were beautifully plated, served hot and delish! The expansive menu and creative cocktails are truly an experience for all tastebuds. Really cool place to watch live music and eat/drink! The ambience of Lou's is its best asset. It's below ground level with dim lighting and vintage inspired decor. The drinks are pretty darn good, I have to admit. The food is not excellent but was good. However, the steak frites were to die for! Also, order the bread: it's so good and you get a lot of it! What a cool and interesting concept. Unfortunately when you try to turn tables instead of letting people enjoy the live music and great conversation they are having it turns people off to how cool this restaurant is. The food was good. The fried pickles were permeated with peppers that over powered the entire dish. The fries were ok but a bit overpriced for what you get. The two cheese plates were probably the star of the show. They were a bit pricey but well worth the cost when you consider the taste. Drinks were solid. In Boston I've had and also have made some really delicious wraps, and this was average in comparison. My friend did enjoy her salad though. Nonetheless, our server was great and the restaurant itself is BEAUTIFUL, I LOVED the decor. Loved it! Came here for my birthday and from the outside it seemed a little bit understated but when you walk downstairs, it is a beautiful dining area with beautiful chandeliers and has a nice swing jazz vibe to it. Nice soft jazz in the evening with excellent food I ordered a wonderful swordfish very moist delicious the mussels were excellent and brussels sprouts were delicious too. That linguine and clams were delicious. I tried the crème brûlée and the coconut cake. Coconut cake was good if you like coconut but it wasn't overly sweet. It tasted almost healthy. I love Harvard Square. Truly, I don't think a single spot here has ever missed -- and Lou's not only kept the streak alive, it raised the bar. The décor? Stunning. Chandeliers for days and random books scattered around while you wait (because who doesn't love flipping through The Great Gatsby while sipping a martini?). I heard they do live music, but we missed it, which just means I'm already planning my next visit. Our server was an absolute gem! Quick, sweet, and on top of everything. The crispy Brussels? Unreal. So good we ordered another batch, and the smoky ham in there sealed the deal. Mom's meatballs tasted like someone's actual mom made them. The fries came with two mayos (& ketchup) both flavor bombs. And don't skip the charcuterie. Mortadella, perfectly chosen accompaniments, it's giving main character energy. The linguine & clams were simple perfection. The bone-in ribeye? Melted in my mouth. This place is so cool!! It's a hidden gem - on a lower level in Harvard Square apparently only opened a year ago. It looks like a library inside plus a live music bar. It's huge and with very elegant furnishings and lighting. We stumbled upon this place one evening as we were walking around on a Saturday evening looking for a place to eat and many of the restaurants seemed full or had lines out the door. So glad we found Lou's. They had a live band playing music on the stage at the very back and we got really nice table right in the center so we had a great view. I ordered the roasted fish alla Norma dish and the hubs ordered the burger. Both were good. I would have liked some carbs like potatoes or even some bread with my dish as it was just the fish and tomatoes and eggplant. The band was great and at one point they even did a march around the entire restaurant which was fun. Service was a bit slow at times but otherwise friendly. Overall great experience and we'll be back when in the area. read more

A beautiful new space in Harvard Square! This place is huge! There are at least 4 or 5 different areas to sit. I went here with my friend on a Thursday and bookedthe performance seating but initially got sat at the bar next to the performance. Maybe that is also considered performance seating? However, the hostess was very kind and accommodating and sat us at an available table in front of the band where we assumed we'd be sitting from booking our reservation. They have a great selection of drinks and both the lemon drop and where's barb were delicious. The where's barb was very sweet if you like that. Our server was very kind and attentive. You also turned the lamp on to get their attention which I liked. For the food, we got the fries to share and wow the curry dip was delicious. For food I got the roasted chicken which was good but a little on the saltier side for my tasting. I did love the mashed potatoes though because it was more a puree. My friend got the halibut which she said was good but not in love with. Overall, great service, drinks, ambiance (especially hearing jazz while you eat), but I would come here again to maybe try some other stuff on their menu. Had a great night at Lou's! The vibe was really fun especially with the live music. My friend and I ordered the steak frites and it was delicious, and I got the Orange Crush which was super yummy . Our server Grace was so sweet and personable and really made the experience even better. Loren Benn and her band performed Sade and other great covers and sounded amazing. We came on Friday night and it's pretty full. No tables were available but we were lucky to find seats at the bar. They have bands playing initially and then DJ later at night. Nice music and vibes. Just a bit too loud for conversations. The "once more with passion" is interesting. It's my first time to try spicy tequila. This drink is slightly on the bitter side and the fruit flavor is not that obvious. Then the orange crush is slightly sweeter and actually I like this better. The glass looks nicer too. We also tried the sweet potato fries and sweet pepper and snap peas. They are surprisingly good. The sweet potato is a bit caramelized and has a bit salty sauce. The sweet pepper is also very flavorful. I'm usually not a pepper person but I like to eat it. Both plates are easy to share. read more

Unfortunately the waitress was the worst I've experienced in a very long time. Place was pretty empty and she came to our table twice (to give us water and to take our order 15+ minutes later) and never again. Couldn't tell her our order didn't come out correctly because she didn't check in, and ultimately had to go hunt her down (talking in the back with coworkers) after bussing our own table and waiting another 15+ minutes to get her eye to get the bill. I stopped in at Lou's in Harvard Square for a late evening dinner. This restaurant, cocktail bar and live music stage is located downstairs from The Gap. The place was very busy since there was a performer on the stage towards the back. You can reserve a table near the stage online. I decided to sit up at the bar towards the front, which is open seating. The bartender gave me a food/drink menu to look at and still water was poured. The food menu offers a selection of shareables, sandwiches, soups, salads, raw bar, larger plates (pasta, steaks, seafood, chicken), and desserts. The prices are on the slightly higher spectrum. I decided on the Chicken Bites ($11 plus tax) and the Roasted Fish Alla Norma ($28 plus tax), to be brought out together, served in about 23 minutes. The chicken bites were lightly breaded and crispy, served over a creamy spiced ranch dressing in a small skillet. The roasted fish alla nonna was an oven roasted halibut, with roasted tomatoes, thick hearty tomato sauce, eggplant puree, basil oil & pickled eggplant on top. After I finished my food, I had enough. I got the check which was $41.73 with tax and before tip. Overall, a solid good meal and a nice casual upscale vibe with nice classic decor (pictures, old books, oldies record covers), live music and jazz music playing over the speakers. Despite being busy at the bar, the service at the bar was good with two bartenders taking care of things Including a refill on the water as I was finishing up dinner. Came for the performance seating, with a reservation for the live music we got a table for two right next to the stage. I absolutely loved the ambiance and LOVED the live performance. The talent alone was worth paying for so no cover was a steal, it felt like we were in a high end jazz club. While the art was the main event, we did browse the menu. To drink I tried with Figgie Smalls mocktail, which was unfortunately way too sweet for me. The cocktail menu looked great though. We were only here for a snack before dinner so tried the chicken bites and double dipped fries. We didn't realize there were dipping sauce options for the fries since the waiter never mentioned them so we only got ketchup, which was unfortunate because sauce would've helped the otherwise plain fries. The fries were also a very small portion - kind of criminal to charge $10 for a side of fries with ketchup. The chicken bites were fine, a bit bland but the ranch sauce was unique and tasty. I had a fantastic brunch at Lou's! I went to one of their jazz brunch events on a Sunday. The live musicians were very talented and played an array of standards that created a nice ambiance to the meal. My sibling and I split the griddled banana bread which was crispy on the edge and moist in the middle. I had the avocado toast with scrambled eggs and my sibling got the eggs Benedict. Entrees were amazing as well, I did the heritage chicken and she got the chicken pasta dish -- both 10/10. Drinks were pretty good as well. Only tried the Once In A Passion and a moscow mule, but both were good. The service was excellent, our waitress Lorenia was incredibly kind and proficient. This place has potential and I'm rooting for them but unfortunately I cannot give a higher rating given that they served me the thing I told them I'm allergic to and I had to discover it by having eaten it, and when they remade the dish they accidentally omitted another key component that was allergen-free. Lou's has such a cool and fun ambiance! The moody lighting, jazz club aesthetic, and disco balls makes it fun place to be for a night out. I love that there is live music, and the restaurant turns in to nightlife with a dance floor. I ordered the baked pasta which I did really enjoy. The ricotta was absolutely delish and the crunch from the bake was perfect. We also shared the milk and cookies for dessert - loved that the milk had a vanilla flavor and the cookies were good i just wish they were served warm. I really have a hard time giving a higher rating though because the service was such a mess! We were called an hour before our reservation and told they needed to push it back 1.5 hours or potentially cancel which I have never had happen before. But then when we got there we still had to wait quite a bit for our table to be ready and food came out super slow (I do think they forgot to put in our order). I do know Lou's is super new and this doesn't seem to be others experience so I am hopeful for improvement for sure! read more

Lou's has really great potential but definitely still needs some work. Starting with the good -- the atmosphere is perfect. Live music (that's not too loud), varied seating options, and well selected decor. Everything about the physical space of Lou's is so good. And, parking is free in a nearby lot with validation! The staff is all friendly and welcoming. That said, they do little to inspire confidence. I would be wary of ingesting anything at Lou's if you have an allergy or restriction. There were a few miscommunications about ingredients in a couple of the dishes we ordered, which never feels good. I hate food waste, but I just didn't feel comfortable enough to eat the bread my table ordered after the two different clarifications about what the "bacon-y" flavor was (first it was "cranberry and walnut, unless the kitchen changed something and didn't tell us" and then it was "smoked apricot"). I'm sure this sounds dramatic, but if the staff isn't confident about what is coming out of the kitchen then I'm not going to feel comfortable eating it. I left Lou's a little hungry and disappointed. I would come back to Lou's to have a simple drink at the bar and to listen to the live music, but I don't think I need to eat anything here. If you're looking for a stellar never-miss restaurant in the Harvard Square area, I'd highly recommend Alden & Harlow! read more

Met some friends for dinner and drinks. We had a party of five. There were no tables available so we agreed to sit on a sofa. The bar was also fairly busy. We gave our drink order to a server. Finally after waiting 45 minutes, I got up and asked the host if he could help find our server. Then after another few minutes a manager came over and apologized for the long wait. Still waiting for drinks, no one took our food order. A short time later we got up to leave and I asked the host to cancel our drinks because we decided to go to another restaurant nearby. I planned my wife's surprise birthday at Lou's more than a month in advance, coordinating repeatedly with management and meeting with them in person twice, including the day of the event. Everything--including seating, food, cake service, and spend minimums--was confirmed in writing and again face-to-face. When we arrived, our entire party had been moved, without notice, to a cramped corner by the bar, next to the restrooms, with temporary cocktail tables and bar stools--nothing like what had been promised earlier that day. Our guests were left standing with no food nor drinks. When I inquired as to when we'd be moving to the section that had been reserved for us which I had confirmed with the manager Matt earlier that day, I was told that they had a manager's meeting and decided to move us to this corner by the restrooms - I was never notified. The manager finally came out to meet with me and I voiced my concern that after a month of planning with them, none of the plans nor their commitments were being honored and my party was being treated very poorly. I was falsely accused of "yelling" and told by the manager, Allison, that we needed to leave and she would speak with me no further. My wife, on her birthday, and a group of 16 guests were forced out at 7 p.m. on a Friday night in freezing weather, holding a birthday cake, with nowhere to go. I am in my late 50s, worked in the service industry for years, and rarely leave reviews--but this was unacceptable. The lack of communication, accountability, and basic hospitality was shocking. Management has since failed to provide any meaningful response. I strongly caution anyone considering Lou's for a special occasion. read more
