Breakfast.

Perfect Spot. Local. Cute. Friendly. Stopped here on our way past for a Day Trip. Was a great find.

I ordered scrambled eggs with sausage and rye bread, boyfriend had The Lou, and we shared the double-dipped french toast.

I ordered scrambled eggs with sausage and rye bread, boyfriend had The Lou, and we shared the double-dipped french toast. My scrambled eggs were perfection, just the way mom makes them. The sausage was great, the rye bread tasted like it was baked in house. I meant to ask about that but didn't. He enjoyed the leaky Lou. French toast was good. I would totally come here again if I was near the area. Perfect, hit the spot.

I've driven by Lou's Restaurant numerous times saying I'm going to stop in there one of these days. Well that's been going on for a few years and today me and Dad went. This has to be the most quaint and cozy vintage style diner in the area. A lunch counter with fresh baked pies and pastries. Soda & Beer on-tap, great coffee, trophies and old photos on the wall and home of 'Carmel's Award Winning Chili'.(I have to go back for that.) But it was breakfast time, and I opted for the special 'Eggs Louie' which was two perfectly poached eggs ontop of Canadian Bacon on a buttery english muffin covered in melted Cheddar cheese, served with hearty home fries. (see the photos) I'm glad I took the waitress' advice and got the special... It was absolutely delicious. The service was great, our waitress refilled the coffee several times and checked in on us. Love this little restaurant and can't wait to bring the rest of the family there in the fall. If you're hungry and near Route 52 in Carmel or neighboring Kent, Stormville or East Fishkill... Skip the fast food and keep driving until you see the Lou's Small Red Restaurant... you'll be happy you did.

Stopped in after a 4 day hike on the Appalachian Trail. Very good breakfast. Excellent chocolate milk. Heading home to Delaware.

We never pass up a chance to try a different diner, and the many cars in the parking lot was a welcoming sign. We seated ourselves at a table and our waitress, Candy, supplied our menus and took our orders. For me, it was a turkey club and French fries w brown gravy. For the old crow, it was a tuna sandwich, also ff w brown gravy. My turkey club was just right; hitting all the right notes. And the brown gravy was also perfect. Came in a cup, so allowed me to dunk the fries in it and also spoon some on the sandwich!!!! Pots also said his tuna and fries were very good. Candy checked on us several times. Karen's is nothing fancy, just good food at a reasonable price. I wouldn't hesitate to return. 4.5 stars!

I had an omelet a with spinach and feta and my friend had blueberry pancakes. Everything tasted pretty good. The waitresses were friendly and fast! I recommend a stop- I saw an article online that said it may be up for sale and I hope that isn't true! Our total bill was $45 which is more than I usually pay for breakfast, but the food was made to order and the portion sizes were decent!

The staff are lovely (a man and his mother) and speak Italian to one another. They make their own mozzarella, soup, and at least some pastries, if not all. Cannoli are filled to order and excellent. Another pastry (crostata?), cut into squares with a shortbread-like crust, cherry jam and chocolate was even more spectacular and something that I *must* come back for. The man told me it was homemade. The sfogliatelle pastry was a little tough and stale, but the thick, ricotta-rich filling was delicious. To be fair, these things have a very short shelf life. I gave it a few minutes in the toaster oven when I finally made it home and the texture was far improved. The son patiently answered my questions [e.g. how to properly pronounce "sfogliatelle," how much the fresh mozzarella costs (about $11 / lb)] and the mother kindly warmed up some pasta e fagioli for me. Sandwiches seem to be the focus here -- the menu is vast! -- but I sorely needed the warm-you-from-the-inside-out comfort of soup at that moment. The rich broth full of red beans, potatoes, and carrots absolutely hit the spot. It's too bad that it took a flat tire to get me in this place. We've been driving by for years and have clearly been missing out all this time!
