Old fashioned eating establishment. It felt like I was in another time and in the Mid West. To get to the restaurant, you have to walk through the store/deli. There was countertop or table dining. Although the place was small, it was not loud. The milkshake was passable. The chili was hearty. The corned beef Reuben was OK. The potatoes were cut thick and need more cooking time. The pancakes were great. If you are in the area and want some great pancakes, this is your place. The waitress was FANTASTIC. She was friendly and helpful. The cutest little breakfast place! It's the perfect place to stop for breakfast or lunch right off of I-84, and the food is solid -- classic diner fare that is simple but very tasty. The sausage was great, the rye bread tasted like it was baked in house. I meant to ask about that but didn't. He enjoyed the leaky Lou. French toast was good. I've driven by Lou's Restaurant numerous times saying I'm going to stop in there one of these days. Well that's been going on for a few years and today me and Dad went. This has to be the most quaint and cozy vintage style diner in the area. A lunch counter with fresh baked pies and pastries. Soda & Beer on-tap, great coffee, trophies and old photos on the wall and home of 'Carmel's Award Winning Chili'.(I have to go back for that.) But it was breakfast time, and I opted for the special 'Eggs Louie' which was two perfectly poached eggs ontop of Canadian Bacon on a buttery english muffin covered in melted Cheddar cheese, served with hearty home fries. (see the photos) I'm glad I took the waitress' advice and got the special... It was absolutely delicious. The service was great, our waitress refilled the coffee several times and checked in on us. Love this little restaurant and can't wait to bring the rest of the family there in the fall. If you're hungry and near Route 52 in Carmel or neighboring Kent, Stormville or East Fishkill... Skip the fast food and keep driving until you see the Lou's Small Red Restaurant... you'll be happy you did. read more

If you find yourself pulling off the highway for gas and you're hungry, DEFINITELY stop at Lou's! It's a little like stepping back in time (in the best of ways). You actually walk into the front convenience store/deli area, and then the restaurant through the second door. A counter, some booths and the owner behind the counter greeting you. Fairly extensive menu for a small place, and everything made fresh by the owner. You can tell He actually cares about what he's making and serving. After getting turned away from the Stormville Flea Market we stopped here for breakfast. I'm so happy we did. This is by far the best breakfast I've had in a long time. I ordered the sausage, mushroom and cheese omelette (fresh mushrooms and Swiss cheese, didn't expect the Swiss, but a delicious surprise) and red potato home fries. Visited this spot because I saw good reviews and it was right off our route .. I later realized those reviews were not recent.. this little diner has clearly not been updated in some time but it was clean. Perhaps it's a NY thing, but when I asked for water I got bottled water and it was $2.00. My husband and I both got the breakfast sandwich, Boar's Head Bacon, Egg and Cheese on a roll. The roll was the main star here as it was mainly roll and the rest of the sandwich barely existed. The sandwich was $3.50? So I paid $2.00 for a bottle of water and only $3.50 for a sandwich? Stopped by Lou's diner by chance, and I'm glad we did. I wasn't expecting anything since it's very standard diner menu, but wow, I was wrong. The food was amazing! I had a bacon and spinach omelette (I switched out the cheddar for spinach). Probably one of the best omelettes I have ever had. My friends ordered blueberry pancakes and they loved them so much, they ordered another portion to go. The service was great! I ordered the boneless rib eye grilled sandwich and even the French fries were from scratch, grandma cutting potatoes and deep frying them.. that type!!! Not frozen, not from a bag. This a great little place. Right next to Hess gas station, off exit 17 on 84. Had a great omelette with mushroom, spinach and tomato, toast was absolutely perfect. The owner is just a really nice guy, serving homemade food. I felt like I made that meal at home. Service was fast. Came here for a breakfast sandwich and 2 coffees menu states 3.50 per a sandwich with meat. Ordered no meat got charged $12 with two coffees. Asked how much the sandwiches were very politely the older man at the counter top stepped outside at that moment and answered " how much is that car" charges are based on which vehicle you may driving. So expect to be judged automatically once you enter this premises without hesitation and smile on managements responses. Would not except that response from owner / manager. A simple response of I can show you the menu for pricing or let me provide you a recite in which was not even provided when asked would of been a good explanation of charges but instead an outside walk to the car was more necessary. Warning to all please come in a beat up car you will get priced and treated right. On a good note sandwich was good eggs were real not microwaved and bread was toasted cheese was melted if your ok paying for $12 for 1 egg and 1 cheese sandwiches I recommend Lou's :) Thanks you read more

Stuck in 1980 and needs to keep up with the times. I felt like I was time warped to a place in the proverbial sticks, out of touch with today's dining expectations. The food is standard and uninspiring at best. Thawed rubbery (not homemade) pancakes with maybe 5 blueberries, an egg sandwich that had WAY more role than egg, boring hard home fries, and mediocre coffee were served by a delightfully friendly waitress - the only saving grace. Considering the location, this place could be a gold mine. The owner, a really nice guy, would benefit greatly from an aesthetic and menu overhaul. I suggest the owner take a chance, hire a consultant, and put some money into the place. Sometimes people become blind to their own complacency and settle with good enough. Well, it shows. Went to the gas station next door about two months ago on a trip up to New Hampshire and saw Lou's - was instantly curious. My boyfriend and I now today are on our way up to Massachusetts and we yelped nearby diners and Lou's came up, so we ventured off the highway and as soon as I saw the gas station, knew it was the same place I saw two months ago! I'm beyond happy my boyfriend and I stopped here. It doesn't look like much on the outside but don't let it fool you. The owner was beyond friendly and accommodating. Took good care of us, always had my coffee filled to the brim and man, can he cook. Delicious omelette and friendly atmosphere. I look forward to coming up to New England more just so we have a reason to come back. Would recommend to everyone and anyone! We love Lou's! read more

This is a diner-style eatery and really has that old-fashioned vibe, but don't let that dissuade you. The food here is fantastic. We stopped by for a quick bite driving through the area and could not have been happier with our decision. We enjoyed chili, deluxe burger, and a Reuben. The food is fantastic, and so is the service. I've eaten there a few times and have had great experiences every time I've been. The omelette and homefries are some of the best I've had, and the place has an old-fashioned diner feel. I've always been greeted with a smile and leave with one.
