When our dog passed away, we thought we would never find another pup that was the right fit for our family. Love-A-Bull was the first organization I reached out to when me and my husband were finally ready to adopt a dog. Not only did they advocate for the bully bread, but they were CAREFUL about who they adopted to, and did meet and greets first. I went on the website and saw a cute perfect looking pittie by the name of Franklin. He was gorgeous. Mostly blue & black with some white around the nose and a few other places. I contacted LAB, via their online application and they reached back out to me. I expressed my interest in Franklin and a meet n greet was set up for the following weekend. I was soooo excited. My husband and I spent an entire hour cleaning just to meet a dog! But alas, the doorbell rang and we opened the door..... First I saw Lindsay, she was all smiles as usual ( I didn't know Lindsay at the time, but this is her usual face) and after her came Franklin and his foster mom. In they marched. I was sooo excited I could barely contain myself. I reached out to Franklin without thinking...and he kind of, well shrank back, and my husband, went all in- going 100% "I love this dog and I want him to know" ........ little did we know that precious Franklin did not necessarily like males.....My poor hubby, the entire meet and greet all he wanted was to pet and love on Franklin, but was not allowed to, or he would be met with a "warning" nip from Franklin. My heart went out to him. I was able to love and pet Franklin, while my husband had to sit by and watch the love fest from afar. After this particular meeting, my husband was done. I could tell he was hurt, and he said that he was no longer interested in pits and that we could look at "less aggressive" breeds on Monday. I was CRUSHED. I adored pits and knew that he did too. I knew he was just hurt by the way things had gone and told him, "If the next dog we meet is not for us, we'll take a break and continue looking at a later date". He agreed. I should say that I had already been looking for another pittie on the LAB website, and had seen a particularly adorable looking pittie by the name of Grace. When Lindsay could see that Franklin was not the dog for us she ASSURED us that she knew just the dog, a loving, cuddle bug by the name of GRACE!!!! I knew she was right, and convinced her and my husband to meet the following day (Sunday) for a meet and greet with Grace. We drove out the next morning 45 minutes south from our place to meet Lindsay, Grace and her foster parents. When we arrived, we could see Lindsay, and a wide looking stout cinder block with little legs in front of her. We approached her and Lindsay says, "meet Grace!!" I was IN LOVE, she was soooo sweet and loving, I MELTED the first time I saw our little slightly over weight but still adorable pitter. We took her home for the weekend, and while I knew from day 1 that this dog was ours for good, it took my husband a day or two to warm up. You'd never know it now. He loves on her and spoils her so much, it's ridiculous. He often thanks me for making me go to that second meet and greet to meet Grace. I simply say, "you're welcome", but really all the thanks goes to LAB and Lindsay for all the work and advocating you do, with out you, we wouldn't have our baby. Love-A-Bull is a great organization doing excellent work. They pull dogs from shelters and place them into foster homes first, where they receive care and the fosters get a chance to learn about the dogs' personalities. They do everything they can to make dogs as adoptable as possible and to find homes that are the right fit for dogs. We adopted a dog who wasn't the best fit for our family. They worked with us to foster him and we found him the perfect fit where he has been happy for a long time. We continued to foster with them and I saw multiple dogs placed into loving homes and I felt good knowing I could pass on accurate information to the dogs' future owners. I have only known LAB to be honest about the dogs in their care. I was even fortunate to foster a dog who ended up getting very sick. This dog would have died alone in the shelter and no one would have known why. I let LAB know that he wasn't acting himself and they rushed him to the vet and did everything in their power to save him, only giving in when the vets at A&M, where he eventually ended up for care after multiple specialists, said the best option was euthanasia. They brought him back to me and had a vet come to my house to perform euthanasia. Members of the board were present and it was very clear that they cared deeply about this pup's life. They are truly there for the dogs and want the best for them. We have now adopted a dog from LAB who is a great fit for us and we will continue to foster in the future. read more

I cannot say enough great things about this organization! They rescue pit bulls all over Texas and are selective in the ones they take so that they can ensure they go to a great home! I was referred to this organization from a friend and am so eternally grateful! We have another household dog, and it was obvious how important to them it was that the dog we got was a perfect fit- not just for the rescue pup, but also for the dog we already have. Love-a-bull is probably one of the best organizations for pit bull advocacy, rescue, adoption, training, activities and education in Austin My husband and I have been members since 2012, after adopting our late love-a-bull rescue Joplin, surviving horrific abuse the first two years of her young life at a South Carolina dog fighting compound, the perpetrator sentenced to a year in prison for animal cruelty. Along with our Chi mix, Doc, we as family participated in many Love-A-Bull activities including but not limited to organized fun walks, pints for pits fundraisers and the annual Pittie Pride Walk, advocating and celebrating pit bulls. Through love-a-bull's free beginning and advanced training classes, Joplin was able to earn her Canine Good Citizen certification in July of 2013. After a break from training, we planned to enroll Joplin in the Spring Austin Dog Alliance Agility Camp Weekend to nurture her love of running, jumping, and catching. Joplin's sudden illness was any pet owner's worst nightmare as we helplessly watched our playful, sweet-natured pup develop atypical, serious and progressive health issues at only four years of age. Not even a year later, we ended up letting Joplin pass, due to extreme complications from progressive polyneuropathy, usually a geriatric disease, but occasionally affecting young dogs. Exceptionally supportive, Love-a-Bull memorialized Joplin's short life on their website. This special effort meant the world to us, overcome with grief. Relying once again on the organization's expertise and guidance, we adopted another love-a-bull rescue, Brisket, abandoned with her very young siblings and found in a box on a highway. Like Joplin, Brisket has already participated in a number of love-a-bull activities, most notably the monthly fun walks and a few pints for pits fundraisers. At one point, we're planning to take Brisket to the same free training classes, mainly for fun and socialization since Brisket works very well on-leash. Finally, we've kept in touch with other love-a-bull members who adopted Brisket's siblings. Schedules permitting, we're hoping to have a reunion. All of this wouldn't be possible with most other animal rescues. But love-a-bull is exceptional: we'll forever be part of their pack and family. read more

I have never been around pit bulls until Love-A -Bull was doing an event at the store I was in. When I came out I spoke to one of the volunteers and we discussed the pit bull. The one I saw was such a sweetie! Licking and just wanting attention. Well..after an application and several talks, coming to my home..I adopted my girl. She is wonderful and so are the people at Love-A-Bull. They are there to help every step of the way. I attended training classes etc. I have owned dogs before but I find that the pit is my favorite. Fun loving and loveable. I love this organization, I have found out the they are all volunteers, 100%. They have other full time jobs but these volunteers are just great people and so caring. While my initial experience seemed good, it very quickly became apparent that I had been misled. I had been told that I was getting a calm, well-behaved 2ish-year-old dog. Obviously with a dog that was found as a stray it's hard to get an exact age, and he may have been between 1-2 years old, but for all intents and purposes what I got was a puppy. A hyper, untrained puppy. I should have asked what "well-behaved" meant specifically, but this dog didn't meet any reasonable definition. He sort of had a basic idea of "sit", but didn't know it meant four on the floor. He didn't know "down", "stay", "come", or the all-important "off" and "no." He didn't know to sit or at the very least hold still to be leashed for walks, he thought it was ok to jump on people, and he thought it was ok to jump up and try to grab treats out of my hand. It took him a week to learn that he wasn't allowed to sleep in my bed. He had no manners whatsoever. I do realize that sometimes dogs will "test" a new person to see what rules they'll enforce, but they usually try a behavior just a couple of times until they're sure they have an answer. They don't test the same behavior over and over and over for weeks. This dog really didn't know. I did call the rescue for help one time, and was given what I consider inappropriate advice. I was told to use a penny can (on a dog with known noise anxiety, see below) or to put him in time out in his crate. I had always been told that a crate is never to be used as punishment, and doing that with a dog who was new to crate training (see below) seemed like a terrible idea. I did put him in timeouts in the kitchen, which seemed to help for a couple of days, and then had no effect at all. I did manage to teach him some basic commands, and after ignoring his jumping or walking away from it many times over several weeks, he finally figured out that this attention-seeking behavior didn't get him attention from me. But he still needed a lot more work. I was told that he had "mild" thunderstorm anxiety, which again is open to interpretation, but I don't consider alternately running around in circles and curling up in a shaking ball in the hallway to be "mild." I got him a Thundershirt, which helped a little but not enough, so I took him to the vet to get some sedatives. I had to play with the dosage (with the vet's guidance, of course) and eventually figured that one out. I had also been led to believe that he was crate-trained (again, I should have asked very specifically), but he clearly was not. While I worked on crate training, I tried to keep him confined to the kitchen area with gates (yes, I got the "extra tall" ones.) He did know better than to jump them while I was in the house, but he apparently jumped over them as soon as I left. I did manage to get him crate trained, and everything seemed fine for several weeks, until he broke out of the crate. I was about ready to give up on him at that point, but he and my other dog seemed to like each other so much that I felt bad about separating them. But after there was an incident in which my (much larger) dog somehow ended up with a puncture wound all the way through his face as well as contusions and lacerations on both sides of his jaw, while this other dog didn't have so much as a scratch, that was the last straw. And of course when I returned him, I was a jerk who didn't want to put any effort into working with the dog. Hilarious. Even more hilariously, this same dog, now up for adoption again, is being touted as a "couch potato" who is "100% sweetness." Oy vey. If you do decide to adopt from this (or any other) rescue, ask very specific questions about the dog's training and behavior issues, and get it all in writing and signed. read more
