A focus on "dog culture" vs "human culture," reading dogs' body language, effectively communicating with dogs, and shifting the energy between you and your dog gives the Naked Dog's programs a "dog whispering" feel. It's much more wide ranging than training that's only focused on commands like sit/stay/down/etc (though you can work on all of those with the Naked Dog's programs too). Before we signed up for the group training series, I was at my wit's end with our recently adopted dog. He had a lot of behavioral issues, ranging from chewing things in the house, overall excitability, constant attempts to eat pecans and, worse, trash on walks (and often succeeding despite our best efforts & requiring steady doses of probiotics and even a vet visit to induce vomiting), and lunging on leash at dogs and passing vehicles. We also noticed that when we took him to the dog park, he'd play really rambunctiously and generally go 0-60, including running and body checking other dogs (not the best strategy for harmonious playing). The great part about this series is that it's three in-person sessions (we added a fourth for some additional coaching) and the rest is a series of online lessons. This made it easy for us to work through at our own pace. In the online portion, the end of every lesson included video homework that we'd send in and get feedback from one of the Naked Dog trainers -- this was great because it captured us applying these skills in a total real world setting, without the presence of a trainer to coach us or influence our dog to be on his best behavior. Fast forward a couple months, and now we feel confident that we can handle any situation with our dog, including taking him to busy and distracting environments and responding to misbehavior. He's mellowed out so much -- he isn't perfect, but it feels like we've reached an understanding. He went from my problem child to my sidekick. He can walk in a heel, he comes when called, and will wait at the door before we say he can come in. It feels like he's looking to us as leaders and that he's truly settled in as part of our family. We followed the Naked Dog's recommendations for introducing dogs for the first time when we took him over to a friend's house to meet their dogs, and they remarked on what a good dog he is, and that he's better behaved than other dogs they've petsitted, so now we have a worry-free petsitting option. I also now take him by our neighborhood park on walks and let him meet other dogs, which used to be a wild activity full of leash pulling and jumping. We did the e-course and it was life changing! My otherwise gentle and cuddly rescue dog used to be such a jerk when he saw another dog on leash or at the park. Or God forbid, someone walk by the window, he'd start growling and barking. He'd be worked up for 5-10 minutes, and there was nothing I could do about it. And on leash, he was a MENACE. I was introduced to two magical training artists known as Allegra and Haley at a puppy introductory class. I was nervous about going even though I had been working with my puppy, but I was so glad that I went! My boxer, Mack had a blast and so did I. My husband and I did the Group Training series with our 1 1/2-year-old rescue dog, Rita. We both had family dogs growing up, but Rita is our first dog as adults. The true secret to this course with the Naked Dog is that YOU get trained (not your dog). I have a 5 year old American Bulldog/Pit rescue that has had issues since the day I got him at 5 months old. Like you, I started searching the internet, google maps, and then Yelp to identify the right dog trainer for my canine daughter. Hmm. "The Naked Dog". Is she going to take my girl's leash? :) I went on to review some of Allegra's reviews. I started to smile, I think. I ended up making a very important call. Allegra doesn't carry too many clients, but as it happened, she did have the ability to fit Nola and myself in for an at-home consult to get things kicked off. You could tell when Allegra entered the home, that she don't suffer no fools. Either owners or dogs. That command of a space and a willingness to call out both owners and dogs on their behaviors isn't for everyone. But it sure was for us. Allegra stepped us through her unique training process, which is well structured and thought out, with various levels of commands to ensure your pooch responds. Her particular attention to WHY her methods work are based on deep observation and research around canine behavior, as well as parents who are unknowingly NOT communicating in dog manner. Allegra is also a refreshing throwback, in the sense of realizing that positive reinforcement isn't always the answer. It certainly isn't in the dog kingdom. Above all, Allegra is concerned about you and your pup flourishing in an urban community - the way she assured me that a light collar pop, collar buzz, or foot touch to the back hind leg was easily worth reinforcing your dog should be under control, so as to keep you both safe - made me realize that I had been waaaaay too forgiving with my pup. In actuality, she had been crawling all over me (literally and figuratively!). Time for alpha dad! The process is hard, because dogs are stubborn, particularly if they have learned one way of being. From there, we've worked on healing (and not pulling my arm off), welcomes at the door (not jumping on everyone), learning how to shut up (and not bark incessantly, if I don't want it), and dismissing teething behavior (to avoid an accident, or avoid annoying people who don't want a mouthy dog around). I honestly can't say better things about Haley and Naked Dog!! I own a Vizsla and if you don't know about this breed, they are very energetic hunting dogs and can follow a scent like no other. After trying to train him on our own and giving him hours upon hours of playtime a day we had reached our limit and needed guidance on how to properly communicate with our dog Bobby Rango. He had slowly taken over our lives and ran the household. He wouldn't come when called while at the dog park and would bark incessantly at the ball. My dog was born visually disabled and I've noticed a big difference in her confidence in the wild and with other dogs after going on these hikes with Allegra. She used to be overly submissive when around other dogs and now she can stick up for herself and regularly engages other dogs in play. I've been lucky enough to tag along on a few of the hikes and it really is something to see. Allegra calmly controls a whole pack of dogs off leash on the trails. No easy feat, but you can tell the dogs are relaxed and really enjoy being part of a pack. Plus my dog comes back exhausted every time, and sleepy puppies really are the cutest puppies. read more

We brought home an Australian shepherd puppy and after a week realized that all the books and articles we were reading were not very useful (we haven't had a dog in years). We could see we were teaching bad habits and I called Allegra in a panic. When I explained, she offered to come out within a few days (whew!) Allegra explained to my teens and I the basics about dog and human communication, and spent time with our dog showing us how to interact. Our dog was immediately responsive to Allegra - which was proof enough for us to follow her suggestions. We have seen a huge improvement in potty training success, and feel like we have tools now to start off a healthy relationship with our pup! We later sent our dog on three months of trail hikes to train her off leash and also for her to improve her dog-friend relationships. This is the best thing investment we made with Scout (our dog) and I HIGHLY recommend it. I can take her on the trail without a leash and she is awesome. First off, I have no other dealings with dog trainers so there is nothing to compare the Naked Dog to; however, I had a very great experience with Allegra and the Naked Dog. I got a Vizsla puppy when shes was around 8-9 weeks old....and, it was the first dog both my wife and I have owned. As the breed is very energetic, and it was my first time raising a dog, I wanted to make sure to get a trainer that was highly recommended that could help us start our dog on the right path. We did the general private training with Allegra which included a two hour initial meeting and two subsequent one hour long sessions. The initial meeting was more about training the owner versus the dog and my wife and I were able to garner a lot of great information from that session that we will continue to incorporate with our dog in our daily lives. The second and third sessions were tailored to our family/dog's individual needs, which included walking on-leash as well as how to behave at dog parks. We live in Mueller (there is a dog run there) so we were able to get actual live experience how to handle certain situations. Overall, Allegra is a wealth of knowledge and I would and have recommended her to other dog owners. If you are looking for a trainer that will teach your dog to shake and roll over, watch youtube videos. If you are looking for a trainer that will help you learn how to properly communicate and train your dog to be obedient and respectful, Naked Dog is for you. I have a 6 month old Viszla (still a puppy) and I am fully comfortable with her in all off-leash settings and although she will always be a work in progress, I believe that the Naked Dog and Allegra set my family up for success with their training session. read more

I wanted to submit a quick update- since this review was posted Allegra worked with me to find a solution for our puppy. She explained that she's changing the policy for private sessions and stressed that the results are dependent on what we discussed. She also offered us a free follow up or a refund. I appreciate her feedback and willingness to give us the best possible outcome for our puppy. I truly think that with the new policy in place, the private sessions will be more helpful to all. I cannot rave enough about Allegra and The Naked Dog. We have a 10 yr old mini schnauzer that is beyond stubborn and set in her ways. About 9 months ago, we welcomed our first baby and needless to say our dog didn't take too kindly to sharing. I am so thankful for Allegra and all she has done for my 4 year old doxie-mix Hunter. He was attacked by a dog last year and developed fear-based aggression and leash reactivity making it almost impossible for me to walk him anywhere. Hunter is such a loving dog inside the home with other people but as soon as he gets outside and see's other dogs he becomes a terrifying aggressive dog it and I was scared he would attack a dog or even worse a person. The Naked Dog's approach to dog behavior and retraining the humans was life changing. I had no idea how much my behavior really impacted Hunter. Allegra was so responsive to our training needs and really customized our experience to make sure we got Hunter to where he needed to be in his training. I am continually working on our training as this is a lifestyle change and is not a 'quick fix'. You gotta put in the work everyday but the fundamentals that Allegra taught us are the key to our continued success. Last year, my dog Phoebe was attacked by another dog on leash, and everything changed. She went from a free-spirited dog-loving pup to an extremely anxious dog that was weary of all new dogs and even humans. I would avoid walking her when other people were out, could no longer bring her out to dog parks or restaurants, and she had so much anxiety. Yet, this all changed when I found Allegra. Her reviews on here are what convinced me to give this a try--they are all an accurate portrayal of how incredible she is. It's true, you as an owner have to be ready to commit to this program and be trained in order to train your pup. It's difficult at first because of how different it is, but after about a week, you already start seeing results, and it will change your life. Allegra has taught my partner and I how to transform our relationship with Phoebe to decrease both of our anxiety and increase our trust in each other. For her graduation from training, Phoebe went OFF LEASH at Zilker park and interacted with all sorts of dogs and humans, and even sniffed the butts of a few Huskies. That was the breed of dog that attacked her, and she would *literally* scream anytime she would see a husky before. I can not recommend Allegra and The Naked Dog more.
