I had my car towed to UI 12/30. I had the computer module replaced on my Saab for a second time at UI (first time 9/2023). I had to replace the computer because we are going to sell it and also a few other items...almost $2,100. I picked it up from their parking lot and the power steering is so tight I can hardly move the steering wheel To drive it onto the road. I drove it across the road to Holiday to see if I needed to buy power steering fluid as I had a 25 mile drive home. Power steering level good. I got to Plymouth and called the shop before they closed Tuesday night. John called Wednesday about 3pm. I asked if the mechanic drove it. He said yes around the neighborhood. Literally, steering was almost locked, front end sounds like a dinosaur yawning. A tense 25 miles home. How could this be missed post computer fix as they parked it in the lot? i could have had them either diagnose and fix the issue at UI (saving me a ride in rush hour downtown) or towed to my other mechanic in Eden Prairie. Friday it's being repaired in EP. It is most likely either a power steering pump or seal issue or possible cv joints. Frustrating. read more

I am going to post my complaint to the BBB, the owners response, and finally my rejection of his offer to make good on this transaction. Judge for yourself, but I'm sharing my story so not one more customer is defrauded by this shop. Seriously. Be warned..... I brought my car in on 12/20/22 @ 8:30 am and advised Dana, 'I hear a grinding noise coming from the front end. It occurs when I accelerate and when I'm moving at all. I had the vehicle last serviced with Hoover Wheel in August and they replaced parts. I have the detailed work order of what they've already done and it's on the passenger seat.' She had me sign an estimate that showed $738 for a wheel bearing replacement, which I signed saying to her, 'I want the grinding noise to be fixed.' She said 'no problem, we'll get you taken care of.' Dana calls me around 4pm to tell me that I can pick it up. I arrive and the bill is $938.77. I paid it even though it was a lot more than originally quoted. I just wanted the noise gone and they said they could do it. I drive the car away and the grinding is even louder. I called and they didn't answer my call. The next day, I waited for a return call because I did leave a voicemail at 5:22 pm. No call back. I called her and said they didn't fix it. She said bring it back and we'll get it fixed. They charged me AGAIN for doing what I had asked in the first place! I was told that the drivers side wheel was hanging there by the owner. I asked how that was possible when I just paid $938 for that to be fixed. They fixed the WRONG SIDE OF MY CAR AND THEN CHARGED ME AGAIN FOR WORK THAT DIDN'T NEED TO BE DONE. I never signed anything agreeing to pay them extra to do the job correctly. This garage has scammed me! I'm out now $1913.25 on a repair that should have costed me less than $500! These people have to be stopped! I told the owner everything and he did not have any sympathy. He gave me $100 off the second bill. I was defrauded by this garage. I understand making a mistake but to blame me and then make me pay twice is outrageous! I want the second bill repaid to me because I shouldn't have had to pay for something that didn't need to be fixed. Again, there is serious fraud going on here and I'd like the BBB to investigate please!!! The owners response: Let me start by saying I am truly sorry about Daniel's experience. He wanted a wheel bearing replaced. We asked which bearing he wanted replaced, He replied "I believe it to be the front passenger side" (call file at 40 sec). Dropped off the car and gave us paperwork from another shop. He did not ask to have anything confirmed about the bearing. Told Daniel that if the hub needed to be replaced with the bearing it would be extra. Parts were replaced per request no diagnosis was performed. A new hire performed the work he did not test drive prior or after the work was completed. Our repair process states to drive before (if driveable) & after repairs. Tech is NOW aware that EVERY vehicle is to be test driven before and AFTER repairs. The 2nd day we looked at the driver side & found the nut was loose. We tightened the nut, the bearing still was noisy. We told Daniel how much it would be to replace the driver side bearing & hub. Finished repair test drove the noise was gone. At pickup he said it was a lot of $$. Gave a $100 discount. I gave him both bearings. I turned the passenger side bearing and said that it felt notchy. Called Daniel twice on 12/30/22 to resolve this. He didn't answer or call back. My solution is as follows. Bring the car back, I will provide a loaner. I will remove the passenger side bearing and install the old bearing. Document taking the new bearing and hub assembly off and installing his old bearing. If there is no noise I will reimburse him for the 1st repair. If there is still noise we can work something out for the passenger side bearing/hub assembly. I am not going to give Daniel the new bearing/hub for free. I need the parts so I can return them and be reimbursed by my supplier. I also want Daniel to take his review off Google and the BBB too since I am accommodating him. I am providing the recorded phone call file from 12/19/22 and a screenshot of the call log showing the times I called Daniel on 12/30/22. My response to the 'solution' offered: I no longer have faith in this business to handle absolutely anything with my car competently or honestly. I reject the 'accommodation' offered. It's simply insufficient. As far as removing my reviews; absolutely not. As a matter of fact, I have told everyone about the scam happening here. John, your response is unacceptable. I complained of a grinding noise. Your website falsely advertises it fixes grinding noises right the first time! Excuses is all you've offered. I will accept the labor costs if you're okay with my continued protest that I should not have had to pay twice. Nice and clean location and nice people. They work on all imports. The problem is that is is impossible for small shop to really have the expertise to work on all import brands and models. Consequently, they must spent a considerable amount of billable time to troubleshoot. I found a $1000 wrong part estimate after they troubleshooted for over 1 1/2 hour my car and then still charged me 25% above second estimate. Ended up paying almost $1000 in total, which included $50.00! to replace a break light. The warning message for the replaced break light just popped up again and I am starting to wonder whether the bulb got really replaced or not.... the car was in the shop three days ago. read more

Dishonest and disorganized! Took our Volvo in for a check engine light. Waited a day and a half to hear back on what was wrong. We never heard so I called. Gave him my email address 3 times but couldn't seem to get me an estimate. He told me he'd found $1800.00 in repairs, many of them minor issues. I explained when I called that this was a car for a college student, not an expensive sports car! He made me pay $150.00 in diagnostic fees just to get the car back. I then took the car to another, more honest mechanic in the Minneapolis area who said it just needed an oil change and that the car was in excellent condition! read more

I have used Uptown Imports many times through the years and I can speak to their abilities and service as I've had several cars serviced there. Pros: John (owner) - very smart and has a keen eye to keeping the customer happy through surveys, promotions, etc. (both mail and online). Good, knowledgeable staff - knows what they are doing. Thorough explanation of what is wrong with the car and options to fix it. Fair pricing Cons: John (owner) - can get testy and has been on more than one occasion. I usually just mark it up to the charm of the shop but it does get annoying. Overbooks - Have had several occasions when my car wasn't ready on time. On one occasion (my last) after I explicitly said I needed it *that day* following a minor repair I was told it wouldnt be ready until tomorrow (it was my only car). So my review is decidedly mixed. While I won't take my car here again, John and his crew on the whole are good, talented folks that just seem to suffer a bit from their success. read more

The last few times I have taken my vehicle to Uptown Imports, my experience has been the same. I have no doubt that they are being honest with what they report to be wrong with my vehicle, or that they are able to fix it well (every time, my car has been fixed and runs just fine). However, I am very disappointed in their lack of help and honesty when I asked for the priority and necessity of a repair. The last time I took my car in, there were several problems that were reported back to me. Explained very well and thoroughly, but not knowing anything about cars, I couldn't identify what was most vital for me to fix at that moment. I could not afford all of the repairs that they were suggesting, but no one would give me a straight answer as to what repairs they could make that would just get me by. Instead, they hemmed and hawed and refused to help me make a decision. This felt very unhelpful and, possibly, even dishonest. I asked a specific question and was given an answer only after I asked it twice more. I am very disappointed with their service in that area. Had they been straight forward and listened to my question and done their best to help me get to the next paycheck (after which I would have been able to pay for the rest of the repairs), I definitely would have taken my car back to them. While I did eventually get the answer that I was looking for, how hard I had to work to was unacceptable. As it is, I felt taken advantage of and regret that I will no longer be taking my vehicles there in the future. Still looking for an honesty that goes beyond just laying out all of the problems for me. I need a mechanic that will HELP me get exactly what I need from my car in the moment. read more

Uptown Imports came recommended from a friend and I can see why. I made an appointment there to check out a used car before purchasing, and they spent about 2 hours going over every inch of the car. They take OCD to an entirely new level. I have to mention Matt. He is like a walking wikipedia when it comes to cars (except he seems to always be correct). He answered all my questions, and even coached me on haggling and it was a total success. He also gave me a free travel mug and a bottle opener keychain, too :) The downside, if you could call it that, was the $100 charge. But that's comparable to similar shops in the cities and it did come with two hours of testing and the peace of mind of knowing my car isn't going to fall apart like a looney tunes car. Looking forward to seeing them for other services. Now I just have to get over my buyer's remorse. (I have to pay what for how many years??) read more

I took my old Swedish car to Uptown Imports several times over the last couple of years. This last year they completely redid my brakes and my exhaust (as well as some other things). 1. Breaks: left and immediately heard some faint screeching and whirling noises at low speed. Took it back the next day--they couldn't hear anything. Picked the car up, drove down the street, heard it again. Took it back as soon as I could. They still couldn't hear anything...maybe the dust flaps? they suggested. This went on two more times. I would give them VERY specific details. It can be heard at low speeds; it seems more noisy on colder morning; if you're in a parking garage, it is quite loud; roll down the front passenger window and drive below 20 MPH. Still, they claimed to not hear anything. Friends were commenting on the noise as we drove down the street; people in other cars would look over; but still they couldn't hear a thing. They never did fix the noise. I gave up on them. It was obvious that they didn't want to fix whatever they did. I eventually just sold the car with the noise. FYI: this brake job cost me about $3k. 2. Exhaust: had them replace exhaust and muffler. Everything seemed ok, but soon realized that my exhaust was leaking when the person to whom I was selling my car pointed it out. That job cost me a could thousand dollars. 3. Three years ago they wanted to charge me $1000 to fix a steering fluid leak. Went to Jerry at Foreign Auto Specialties: $400 (if only Jerry didn't speak to everyone like they were stupid a-holes!) 4. And on top of this, they charge you for a diagnostic EVEN when you come in based on their recommendations for repairs! WTF? They tell you explicitly what needs to be fixed, and then charge you over $50 to diagnose AGAIN what needs to be fixed. These guys are over priced, they nickel and dime you, and their work is shotty at best. If you own a European car, just put up with Jerry's attitude at Foreign Auto Specialty. He's horrible to deal with, but he's honest and he won't try to screw you over. read more

Never, never, never going to bring a car to this shop again. Where should I begin? I had an appointment for my 2017 Mercedes to have the sunroof assessed for damage due to an accident. Called for a status update the next day and they had not even looked at it yet. I asked why they made an appointment when they did not look at it for another day and the owner replied that they were busy. He was rude and condescending whenever I spoke with him. Three days later the insurance adjuster arrived and he told me they wanted to order all of these parts and then would send them back if they didn't use them. He only approved payment for the inspection of the roof to assess the damage. Two days later (the car has now been in there shop for 10 days) I got a call telling me they did not have the expertise to do the inspection because it required removing the windshield and Mercedes does not readily share information/instructions of how to do the inspection. They charged me $150 for the "inspection" anyway. read more

Thank God I found these guys! They are everything other mechanics are not: Friendly, smiling, incredibly fast, and cheaper than Kline or Borton. I really appreciate this group of mechanics - they are honest, practical, reasonably priced, and won't try to upsell you (except for their car care club card, which is easy to decline). While I do most of my oil changes elsewhere to save $$, I take my Honda here annually for maintenance . They are great at explaining exactly what they found, why they recommend certain repairs, and what services/repairs are immediate needs versus things that can wait a bit. Once they recommended a couple maintenance services that I had already had done by them in prior visits, so it helps to keep your own maintenance records as well (and compare them to your car's maintenance manual). The only downside of this shop is that their hours are bit more limited than other places that I've gone, which can make picking up your repaired car tricky if you work a strict 9-5 away from Uptown. But their location is convenient to bus/bike to, so it's easy to get around when your car is being worked on. read more

I brought my Saab to this place on blind faith. Bad idea. Over $800 later and a fresh scrape on my car, I was told by them my car needed a new engine. (I was told by my next mechanic, the person I should have taken it to in the beginning, that they did some shoddy work. And he was appalled they charged me $800 plus to say the car needed a new engine.) I am very familiar with the body of my car. I hand wash it often. That scrape was not there when I dropped the car off. They were not apologetic nor happy about fixing the scrape. But, they did fix. It took 2 weeks to have that repaired. Overall, it was a bad experience. I feel like I got ripped off and that the man I dealt with was less than honest. They told me they would put a new engine in for $7000. I got the job done for $3500 by a Saab expert. Never again will I step foot in Uptown Imports. read more

Super professional and straight forward automotive mechanic shop. They diagnosed an ABS problem on my 2013 Subaru Crosstrek, showed me a multi page print out of all that was done and what error codes were showing with repairs done. Very transparent and no upselling me on further work, other than some suggestions on the automated printout. Met the owner John, seemed like a really nice guy, so was dave the service attendant, and even the guy who did our service came out and told us what he did to the car, definitely made me want to come back and make this my go to shop from now on. I am perpetually reading reviews and read some of the other reviews for this shop, especially the one with the woman who said they gave her too much information...lol Really? You can't please everyone obviously! I used to work for car dealers, this is better service than you would get at the dealer any day. read more

After my first time bringing my car here, I said, "Never again," because of the customer service. But some repairs came up, and it seemed too inconvenient to look again for another shop. But really, never again. I took the car in to get some minor, routine repairs. I left the shop, and discovered half of the broken things were working exactly the same as before. They were very good about getting it in the next day, still, that's a huge inconvenience to have to bring a car in twice. Now one of those things I brought it in for the first and second time is fixed, and the second one still is not. There is no accommodation for being so inconvenienced, and Matt acted like I was a huge pain, bringing my car in twice! Needing to get it back twice! When if they had done the repairs right the first time, it would have been a non-issue. Meanwhile, I left the shop in the rain, struggling to put my bike in the trunk. Did either of the two repair guys standing outside offer to give me a hand? No. Yet I did return their tools they'd left in my car. I actually have to go back to get the repairs finished properly the third time (the display lights are still going off saying lights aren't working, which they have been all along), and I'm really not looking forward to it. I debated 2 stars since some of the repairs were done properly, and I don't think they've actually hurt my car. However, the level of condescension and trying to make me wrong, when they still haven't fixed the car, in addition to the inconvenience, makes me have to say, "Methinks not," which is, technically, one star. read more

These guys were SOOOO helpful. I stopped in yesterday after my car overheated and coolant was running out of my car faster than I could put it in. I just leaving MN and on my way to M, with my car packed, I for my move out of the state. They were extremely accommodating, they fixed my car the same day and were very nice and helpful with everything. When fixing my car they kept me in the loop of everything that was going on and what they were doing, along with why each fix was made. Not my usual shop. I was recommended to come here when my usual mechanic had some confusion on my Mazda 3. I called and left a message on Friday 8/3 around 1:30 pm, so they're still open. By Monday 8/6 around 3 I still had not received a call back so I called and spoke with Anne, I believe her name was. She stated that they are not affiliated with my mechanic and don't work with/for him. I reassured that I just wanted my car looked at like any other customer-already off to a bad start by not calling me back at all and getting shut down before anything else-I was able to get my car in 8/8 for a diagnosis, I was informed that they would look it over and call me with what's wrong so I could approve whether or not I wanted the work done. I received a call 5 hours after dropping it off saying there are no issues and that I could come pick it up. Upon arrival I am informed of 3 separate issues on my car that could be worked on. Why was this not run by me on the phone before coming to pick my car up? I would have spend around $700 on work that could have been done but, because I was not made aware until I was ready to pick up the vehicle and go about my day I'm taking the work elsewhere. read more

I get my car serviced and maintenance completed at uptown imports. I need synthetic oil changes and their prices are very fair. I actually drive from Uptown, to their new location, which isn't too far away, but I definitely pass a multitude of other shops on the way. I actually tried a shop much closer to my house, and they left my oil cap off, and needless to say, it was a disaster, so I decided never to stray from Uptown Imports again. I drive a Subaru, and I want a repair shop that uses Subaru parts and will care for my car well. Everyone is professional and organized. John the owner seems to really care about his business and the quality of the work performed, which is not always the case. read more

Love this place!!! I've had my Mercedes-Benz serviced here twice and each time we've gotten great results. They are always timely, reasonably priced and very knowledgeable about import cars. Because this location is fairly new, I'd never heard of Uptown Imports until they moved the this north side location. I was a tad bit reluctant, but after giving them a shot, I wouldn't go anywhere else for service. The staff is also very friendly too! The worst aspect I will mention: THE JUNK MAIL! Don't ever become a customer or, wherever you move, they will send you JUNK MAIL like no buddy's business. The tone of their mails is also annoying and demanding: "We're waiting for you." Are you serious? I've since moved to Los Angeles and they continue to send me mail saying my car is due for service. I don't know how they got my address, but obviously they feel as though you're married to them for life if you get one service. I'll just give 2 stars because I thought the service was ok and thorough (though I'm suspicious, like a few other reviews), that too many repairs were encouraged. read more

They get the work done right. If you schedule ahead of time, they always get your car back on time. They don't keep your car for extra days on flimsy excuses. In addition to being on time, they appear to be doing a better job a diagnosing and fixing problems. I have never had anything that they fixed re-brake. I have never had other things go wrong (or fall off) within a few weeks of getting my car back. I have had these problems at other shops. They don't have loan cars, but if you call ahead they will have a rental car for you. I never tried that service. They are close to the cross-town Lake St buses. They are not the cheapest in town. In fact, they are consistently $20+ above other places where I have checked their prices on the same work. They also charge a diagnostic fee more often then they should. (It feels inappropriate when you tell them the problem.) I decided that they deserved the extra money. read more

Upon my first visit, mar car ran noticeably better, but that's not the best part. For the next month, I was discovering small things they'd fixed or corrected without charge, or even mention. They 'unstuck' my hatch lever, re-set my clock, fixed a remote issue I was having, and a few other small issues. What a month! Disappointing experience at Uptown Imports - Overpriced; keeping parts and labor billing information secretive; and unaware of your actual needs. The decision to take my car to Uptown Imports is one I very much regret. I needed to get my car back on the road quickly and this place was in the neighborhood. After checking out the reviews online, I decided this was the place to go, but now strongly disagree with the positive reviews posted (mostly older, so it is possible the poor quality of service is more recent). The work done on my car was related to repairing clutch hydraulic systems. Here are the reasons I would not recommend this place: 1. OVERPRICED - After getting the repair done and having the price go up mid-repair, I called other shops to get quotes and looked into this specific repair online. I found other shops would do it for hundreds of dollars less. 2. STRANGE BILLING PRACTICES: For whatever reason, this place would not break the billing into parts and labor costs as is standard practice at most auto shops. After my experience of calling around to the other shops and asking for pricing information, I am left to conclude Uptown Imports won't give this information to you because of the large price mark-up they place on each repair. Furthermore, they charge you for all materials used during diagnosis and repair, then add a mysterious "supplies" cost line near the bottom. 3. UNAWARE OF ACTUAL NEEDS: Expect the up-sell at this place. I had an older model car in at the shop and was looking to have only the necessary repairs done. The diagnosis on the invoice stated "needs slave cylinder". They decided to replace both the slave and master cylinders, which in doing further research is not usually necessary and DOUBLES the parts and labor costs. They also suggested doing a further $900 worth of repairs, which I declined and had been deemed unnecessary by my hometown mechanic weeks earlier. The people there were nice and seemed to care, but this was a decidedly poor experience. (Please note my standards are reasonable - I have left a 4 star review at a different auto mechanic in the last year) read more

Driving from Grand Forks to MSP Airport, my 2002 SAAB 9-5t wagons oil light came on and like an idiot I continued to drive. Started clicking very bad before I parked it at airport and I feared the dreaded SAAB sludge. called multiple shops in the area, and all of them told me since it was a Saab and I had driven it a bit with the oil light on, that I had blown my engine, and that I should scrap it or just sell it to them for a couple hundred bucks. All but one shop that is. Uptown Imports was honest, and told me there is a good chance it has a blown engine, but also said it was worth checking to make sure before I gave up on it as so many others had suggested. Stuck in Minn, with no idea were to stay, they got online and checked out hotel prices for me, got me a cab, and told me they would call with updates on there work, and they did exactly that, I knew exactly what was happening to my car and what it was going to cost me, I simply had to say ya, or nay. Here comes the most important part, when all the other shops refused to work on my precious SAAB, telling me it was scrap, Uptown, giving it a chance, was able to fix it!!! saving me from giving away a merely sick car that was fixable (yes it was sludge), instead of losing thousands by scraping it like the others had suggested. even more, the car runs substantially better than when I bought it!!! Highly recommended for SAAB owners! they are tricky cars, most mechanic will charge you for the hour they spent scratching their heads trying to figure them out. 30k on a Passat timing belt job and tensioner failed killing the motor so it needs a full overhaul or replacement. Took back to shop 3 times before they got the leaking seals to stop leaking after timing belt was first installed. Had to drop 4 times to get it done right. Also BIG NOTE: Do not park on the street with even 2 wheels on the bridge or you will get a ticket. not marked and they won't tell their customers. read more

I'm so glad I brought my car here. I drive an older lexus SUV and even though the car started after it was towed here, John the owner worked meticulously to figure out what the problem was with no help from any diagnostic codes. I was so glad he did as he figured out it was the air sensor and I felt very comfortable driving it back to Chicago than Louisville! The car is still starting up like a charm. read more

I had just moved to town and my Volvo needed regular service. Found Uptown Auto by chance and made an initial visit to check things out. I was used to dealing with an independent mechanic as opposed to a dealer so I think I knew what questions to ask. Andi was just great and set up an appointment. During the harsh winter ( I know you guys think this winter was easy) I had a few alerts come up on the car. Called Andi and she said bring it over. They looked at it over lunch time and voila, the issues were resolved. Same thing a few weeks later when the alert came on for bulb replacement. Again called Andi, she said bring it over. Went over during the same day and they pulled it in, fixed the bulb and discovered another one out. Fixed that too. In my opinion, they are the go to guys (and ladies..yeah Andi!!) for honest repairs. read more

I typically don't spend the time to write reviews but I usually just let the manager/owner know how they're doing. However, I had a fantastic experience at Uptown Imports. First of all, they were able to squeak me in 3 days out compared to some other shops being a week out. I was worried that this was because they didn't do the best job but I truly think it is because they have only been in their new location for about a year. The service was fantastic! They got me in first thing in the morning and finished it up in just a couple hours. This included new pads and drums on my rear brakes (2008 BMW 528xi) plus a pretty thorough once over on the rest of the car. They actually identified the exact same things that my BMW dealer found but were considerably less expensive (literally over $700 less on one service and $100-$250 on some oil issues). I am that guy that says "you get what you pay for" but in this case, that isn't quite true. I would assume that Uptown Imports prices are just lower due to their location (not much around there) and far less overhead. Whatever the reasons, I am pumped that I now "gotta BMW guy". Hands down, I would use them anytime in the future. read more

Just moved to the state so I did a quick Google search and decided to go with these guys to fix my saab from the reviews. I had my car towed here and did business 100% over the phone with Matt. He was very honest and polite and got the job done. They may not be the cheapest place to go ( he actually admitted it), such as their diagnostic fee, but they got the job done the correct way. As a new customer I also got a free oil change and a free gift. A nice way to show they appreciate your business. The waiting room is clean and there is free keurig coffee! Brought our daughter's SAAB to John. Understand that we had taken the car to two other mechanics and the dealership and no one was able to fix the problem. I do believe it is too early to say that the problem has been fixed (which is the only reason I did not give it a perfect score), but John sure seemed to know where the problem was and how to fix it. Would highly recommend Uptown Imports. I brought my car in and it was fixed the next day. They did a thorough job of diagnosing my car's issues and communicated those to me. After my car was fixed I had an issue with my passenger side window and door lock. I knew the work they did was relatively close to the door. I let them know about the issues and they offered to take a look at my car as a follow up without charging me. They diagnosed the problem (which was caused by my car being up there in age and not their fault), but it sounds like it was an easy/inexpensive solution because they fixed the issues without charging me again. My windows are actually working better than when I originally brought my car in. I am new-ish to the Uptown area and have been looking for a garage that I feel comfortable with that has fair pricing and I've found it. I will be going back to them for sure. read more
