This place is without a doubt - THE BEST SALAD BAR in the East Bay. They have a wide selection and everything is super fresh. Better than the salad bar at Whole Foods. The customer service is generous with a smile. The also have sandwiches, pastries, fruit, beverages, soups, and a terrific breakfast sandwich. Can't imagine why their rating isn't five star or why they don't pop up as Number One on Best Salad Bar! Met several other new people there the other day and we all agreed - nowhere else in the Bay Area compares to their freshness with ample variety. Oh, well. I had high expectations for the quality of the bagels based on the name or the place and its Yelp reviews. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The bagels were chewy and relatively thin. I asked for a toasted bagel with butter and it felt like they toasted it just barely enough to make it hot so the butter would melt. I prefer to actually see evidence of it being toasted, but maybe they get too many complaints about over-toasting. Also, on my way to the bathroom, I noticed a Noah's Bagels bag on the floor in the hallway. I am HOPING that they don't simply buy bagels from Noah's. After all, this IS a bagel shop and I would expect that as such, they would make their own bagels. If I want Noah's Bagels, I'll just go to Noah's. If I don't care about whether or not the bagels are made in-house, then I'll just go to the Berkeley Bowl and buy them there (or any other sandwich shop/deli on Shattuck or University for that matter). I also didn't find the employees to be very friendly. The guy seemed annoyed when I asked him where the bathroom was and didn't smile at all at any of the customers who were placing orders while I was there. And even though I told him I wanted the bagels to go, he handed them to me wrapped individually, but without a bag to carry them in or any napkins (though they may have been out for self-service, I didn't see them). If I want chewy bagels brought in from some other place served to be by unfriendly staff, then I would definitely come back. But something tells me I'll never feel such an urge. read more

Came here to grab a quick breakfast. Staff was friendly and there's a lot of room to sit. I got a breakfast burrito with bacon, which was around $4.00. The size of it was smaller than what I expected, but I think I appreciated the fact that because it's half the size of what a "normal" burrito is, I did not feel really gross and fat after eating it. It was pretty basic: some eggs, bacon, and hash browns. Though visually, it was not very appealing at all. Best breakfast sandwich in Berkeley!! Egg, sausage and cheese on an everything bagel. Perfectly toasted and prepared fresh when you order. You can also get it with smoked ham. There's a great selection of bagels or you can get it on a toasted croissant. The smoothies are wonderful and they have the freshest fruit cup ever. Later for lunch you can build your own salad or sandwich. The nachos are friggin great. Good selection of sodas and coffee. They are closed on the weekends and there is a five dollar minimum if you use a credit card. Around lunch time, you have to compete with the high school kids (loud obnoxious teenagers). This tiny Korean operated build your own sandwich shop has been around for a long time. I've always appreciated the guacamole spread to go with slices of provolone, a large french roll, and massive slices of turkey, ham, and roast beef to please. They also have a tasty lox bagel and a nice soup and salad section. The only limitations I see are a shortage of bread options for the sandwiches and a lackluster decor. I've been here twice. The first time they put cottage cheese instead of cream cheese on my bagel. Luckily, I really like cottage cheese so I didn't mind TOO much. This place has great food and all, BUT they never opened on time. Never. I've gone to this place 10 or so times before work. The sign says they open at 7. Someone is in the building around 7. Doors stay locked until 7:15 or 7:20. Even when they see someone outside trying to open the doors, they do not care to open up. Once you do get in there, it takes them 15-20 minutes to make the sandwich (because, you know, they aren't quite ready to open). I'm fine waiting for some quality food. Just don't say you open at 7 if you really don't. I always tell myself I'm not even going to try again, but I always find myself back after a couple of weeks only to be let down. read more

I went in and ordered an egg bagel with chive cream cheese. But instead of chive cream cheese, they put normal cream cheese on it, and then sprinkled dried chives from a spice container on top. And it cost $3.25!?!!? I confronted them about not using chive cream cheese and they insisted it was chive cream cheese. This place is the perfect quick stop for breakfast or a light lunch! I work nearby and always stop in. The couple that own the place and very nice, service is always quick and to the point. For breakfast my favorites are the english muffin breakfast sandwiches, the breakfast burritos and the traditional bagel with cream cheese. For quick grabs the yogurt cups and fruit are always a go to! For lunch they have a great salad, sandwich bar and offers two yummy soups! The only downside is that they do close a bit early so they're best for breakfasts and lunches only. Some tips try to avoid going during Berkeley High's lunch time and right before school starts thats when the line gets pretty long. They have a $5 dollar minimum for cards. read more

I'm a regular here, from the HS years to working next door. I come here when I'm craving a bagel (I always ask for extra cream cheese) or a small salad or random snacks. They are usually pretty generous with the bagel fixings but it really depends who you get. One of the ladies are super cheap and don't give you much, and the guys always stack up my bagels nice And pretty. This is a great place to come by! Right next to the YMCA, this place is fantastic when you're in need of a quick bite before or after a workout or when you're near downtown Berkeley BART. Haven't been during lunch so no idea if it gets crowded then, but 11AM on a weekday there's no line, food is tasty & quickly prepared, and the folks who work there friendly. Bonuses: Tons of seating. I used to go here all the time when I went to Berkeley High in the mid 2000's and even though I was a DAILY customer the man and woman behind the counter were ALWAYS rude and short with me. And I guess nothing has changed bc after a work out at the Y I went in for their "Californian" (sesame bagel, cream cheese, sprouts, guac)- the guy seemed really annoyed me (despite my happy demeanor from my workout adrenaline rush), the bagel somehow took over ten minutes to make even though I was one of like 4 people in there, and there was barely any cream cheese or guac on the bagel. Upon asking if they could maybe put a little more of each on they insisted it would be an extra 1.75- TOTAL bull. Needs new ownership BAD. read more

They do a lot of breakfast business and lunch is busy with downtown Berkeley office workers and Berkeley High students. The bagels are passable--they're not very chewy at all, but what do you expect in California? The salad bar is sold by the pound--if you load up on anything that weighs a lot like beans or like a lot of dressing, you can end up paying $6-7 for a medium sized salad. read more

I can't really justify giving more than 3 stars, but as a recently relocated New Yorker, I do appreciate the salad bar (though it's definitely not a replacement for the deli steam tables that are so bad yet so good). I appreciate that they have juices, but they keep prices low by using the cheaper ingredients like carrots--no straight up green juice option. Most of the staff is friendly. Ugh, downtown Berkeley is sorely lacking in food options that are both edible and affordable. The place is here is evidence of that sad reality. The service here is flakey, slow and sometimes even nasty here.
