Came here for the luosifen and stinky tofu!! Words that one never imagined belongs in one sentence. We ordered the beef shank luosifen, little spicy (spicy condiments available to make more spicy) and it was just heavenly. The from scratch broth, pleasant aroma from sour bamboo, crunchy string beans (wish there was an option to add!!) were phenomenal. Plus the tender yet collagenous beef shank cooked to perfection was phenomenal. Absolutely stick to your bones without the usual heaviness with big spicy noodle soups. No MSG headaches here, all the flavor is homegrown. The stinky tofu was also fried to perfection, with a side of Taiwanese kimchi. All the food was thoughtfully prepared and executed. We had our noodles fall apart and Yan corrected it immediately. She took the time to talk about her story of how she opened the restaurant originally to support her daughters college, her natural gift at cooking, and how her recipe was developed originally from a family one to what it is today. Just the warmest, most welcoming people. Even short staffed, we were impressed at how faultless and prepared from the heart the food was, warm and inviting the service, and leaving feeling like we just ate at our favorite auntie's house. My husband and I came in this evening (4/24/26) an hour before closing for dinner. He had been before but it was my first time. I cannot say enough wonderful things!! The gentleman who waited on us was very kind and chatty, and took the time to explain the menu and kept checking on us...he alone I would come back for...I love it when someone takes pride in their restaurant. It is my first time trying the luosifen noodles and I was surprised that I liked the texture of the noodles! Continuing my journey to find the best beef noodle soup, I came across the location that I pass by all the time. Spoiler alert, the beef noodle soup was not very good, but their Luosifen was out of this world! It's rare I find a noodle dish I haven't had before, let alone haven't even heard of, but this was their specialty dish. The flavors were great - little bit sour, savory and umami. I never had anything like it and will 100% comeback just for these noodles! We also tried the chef recommend fish dish and the beef burrito. I was not a huge fan of the fish due to the super sour/pickled taste, but my girlfriend loved it. The beef burrito had a nice flaky dough and was decently filled with meat and toppings. This is a great hole in the wall spot serving very authentic Chinese food. If you come here, you MUST get the Luosifen. The chef was really nice and welcoming. She gave us a thorough walk through of the menu and some of highlight menu items they're known for. I ended up ordering the small shrimp lousifen (extra spicy). I loved the flavors being slight sour and heat with different textures from the wood ear mushroom, peanuts, to tofu skin. Adding the secret vinegar that was recommended definitely took flavors up and additional notch. I wish we went with more people because I wanted to try the beef burrito, but I guess that's something I can try next time I'm back. The QR code order system was great. The broth was super flavorful & love the different toppings that came with ( bok choy, peanuts, picked veggies). I did however think it was not spicy enough but thankfully the table had more chili oil for you to add as much as your hear desire. So I went to Yanzi Noodle House on a soup craving mission, and WOW. First off, the staff is super chill and friendly. They totally schooled me on Lousifen, which is this amazing broth with...wait for it...snails! I was a little hesitant, but they explained it so well, and I'm so glad I gave it a shot. We got a big bowl of it to share, and everyone, including my 10-year-old, was slurping it up. Seriously, the broth is packed with flavor, and they have this spicy vinegar and other stuff on the table so you can customize it to your heart's content. We also got some basil popcorn chicken (duh, always a good choice for the kiddos) and this beef burrito thing that's basically a scallion pancake stuffed with beef. The owner even came over to chat, which was cool. They're working on a new menu, and I'm already excited to try it. An Honest Review for Yanzi Noodle House 燕子螺蛳粉 -- Hoping They Improve and Thrive (3/5) I was running errands nearby and feeling hungry, so I decided to try Yanzi Noodle House after reading some good reviews and seeing mouthwatering photos posted by the business. My plan was to dine in and also order a few things for takeout. I arrived around 3:30 PM on a Wednesday, and it looked like all the staff were sitting out front having lunch in the dining area -- the same area as customers. I was the only customer at the time, which I understand since it was mid-afternoon on a weekday. As I usually do when visiting a new restaurant, I asked what they recommend and what their signature dishes are. Their Signature Luosifen (A3) and Delicious Luosifen (A2) were both sold out -- on a weekday lunch, which was surprising since Luosifen noodles are what they're known for. Since they also didn't have another item I was considering, I ordered a large Beef Brisket Luosifen noodle with extra crispy roast pork instead. I also ordered Wontons with Spicy Snail Soup and a few other takeout items to support the business. When the food came, it didn't look much like the photos from the menu. For example, instead of the baby bok choy shown in the pictures, both dishes came with leaf lettuce or romaine. The flavors were okay, but the ingredients -- especially the proteins -- didn't match what was advertised. The beef brisket portion was minimal, and the "crispy" roast pork barely showed up in the bowl and wasn't really crispy. Overall, I feel bad for the business because I think they have a good concept and the potential to do well. But consistency is key -- especially when the photos on the menu show one thing and the plate arrives looking different. Service-wise, there was no dedicated server during my visit; the gentleman who helped me seemed to be a friend or family member of the business. I hope this review is helpful -- both for other diners to set expectations and for the restaurant to see where they can improve. I was trying to find something a little different and Yanzi was out around where I was running errands. Go in, pick a seat, and start looking over the menu. It was a little confusing as you need to check it via QR code. One of the people working came over and started talking me through it all, which was really helpful. I know the luosifen is their thing, but I was definitely having some trouble with the menu and took the lazy route: wonton soup with noodles. I decided to add on some roasted pork. Dish came out quickly and they have condiments at the table. The food was delicious. The roast pork was a bit of a small size for the price of the add-on, so I might skip that in the future. Bean Curd Mapo Tofu The Luosifen broth is a nice switchup from the other mainstream soup noodles I typically have, it hits LOTS of tasty notes: savory, slightly sour, spicy, its made from River Snails, but don't let that put you off because it's definitely worth trying. This style of Chinese soup noodles with the toppings (peanuts, pickled greens, wood ear mushroom, fried tofu) brings me back to childhood. Yanzi served a lot of dishes, but their signature is built around Luosifen. Not sure everyone has heard about this specialty from Guangxi Province, one of the southern province in China. Luosifen has been gaining national popularity in China in the last decade or a little more, where you can find its instant version in many oriental grocery store (different brands). With that being said, Luosifen is a rice noodle dish with its history and background that typically comes with fresh made broth, pickled bamboo shoots, pickled chopped string beans, and other ingredients. For anyone that does not like pickled stuff, this signature dish is not for you, just like blue cheese is not for everyone. Compared to the instant package, Yanzi noodles does not have that strong smell, the green beans taste fresh despite they are pickled. After having the dish I don't feel as salty as I usually felt after having instant version. I also ordered the Taiwanese stinky tofu, I would not say it is whoa but it is nice, crisp but not oily, only my preference that I hope it can be more stinky (fermented). The fresh made soy milk, perfect. I asked not to add any sugar, I can taste it was just made from the machine with fresh and clean soy taste. Overall it is a decent surprise for me to find this place that emphasizes on a signature speciality, I think it takes courage and hard work to get to this point. The two tables next to us traveled from DC and Frederick, MD to try their famous luosifen which is a rice noodle soup with broth made from river snails, pork bones, and other ingredients. Other reviewers were right about this place having a particular smell. Once you walk in, the aroma of their food is pretty distinctive. I've never had luosifen before and the mushroom with pork luosifen was very good. It had crispy pork skin, bok choy, peanuts, scallions, the rice noodles, and mushrooms of course. The soup was tangy, salty, sweet, and a little pungent. It's different than any Asian noodle soup I've had. The second item that I enjoyed was their beef burrito. It's almost like a scallion pancake with beef and a sweet sauce in the center. It was crispy and savory. We also ordered the wonton noodle soup, another beef noodle soup, and a pork with rice dish (clearly, we over ordered) because we wanted to try a little bit of everything. Those dishes were good but not as memorable as the luosifen and beef burrito. Their Taiwanese popcorn chicken was popular amongst our kids. They ate that dish up! It wasn't as seasoned as most popcorn chicken I've had but this worked in our kids' favor. Service was friendly, maybe not the most attentive but they were nice and explained their menu well. The place also wasn't the most clean. I saw pieces of meat stuck between the bench and some rice on the chairs that was supposedly cleaned already. The smell is definitely something to get used to. Turns out Yanzi noodle house is from Taiwan and the food was deliciously different. She told us about the menu and the dishes that received great reviews from the Washington Post. We ordered beef luosifen , fried pork luosifen, spring rolls and the house special fusion beef burritos. The food was made fresh so it took a while to arrive but when it did the large steaming bowls didn't disappoint! The endless reddish broth was savory and spicy, with noodles meat and vegetables. We were encouraged to order the dishes medium and add more spice as we chose. The food was delicious, plentiful and different than other restaurants. Yanzi was AMAZING! The owner is super friendly and really excited about the food, she walked us through the huge menu and heave us recommendations. We got the signature soup which the broth so so savory and flavorful and the spice levels can be adjusted to your preference. The Kung pao chicken and the beef burrito were some of my favorites.
