The menu offerings of the day!

I had often heard tales of the SECRET DOWNTOWN LUBY'S but had thought it mere myth. Where was it? Why was it a secret? What did it serve? Online sleuthing yielded few results--some yelp reviews from years ago, a few empty location listings--what did it mean? Did a secret Luby's downtown ever exist, or was it gone the way of Leslie, riding bare-backed into the sunset of an Austin long gone... Well friends, I am here to tell you, the Secret Downtown Luby's DOES exist, and dreams do come true. That is, if your dreams are of mediocre comfort food served via spoon onto your waiting tray. Enter the Travis County Building on the corner of 7th and Lavaca. Walk past the security desk, and give a sympathy laugh to the security guards who ask for the "secret password" before continuing down the escalator. Follow the cafeteria seating and you will be rewarded with a Luby's location that has been boiled down to its essence: four sides, four proteins, a soda fountain, and a selection of cold salads and pies. It's a Luby's. Set your expectation dial to "novelty" and "convenience" and you won't be disappointed. Were my enchiladas authentic Tex-Mex? No. Were they a decent, warm lunch? Yes. Did I get an apple pie for dessert? Absolutely. Did I try to sneak a free refill? Maybe. Did I consume more carbs than a body-conscious woman in her 30s should eat in a single sitting? You betcha. Service was quick and friendly. The price was right. And with the location centrally located to my downtown office, it's a place I'll be returning often.

Go straight passed the elevators, then down the escalator.

An option for a good hot meal at lunch that doesn't break the bank like many downtown eateries.

Food was awful. My husband and I were sick the rest of the day. Very limited seating.

Yesterday afternoon, my boyfriend and I had an unpleasant experience at dinner. I don't live in…read moreAustin because I have a business out of town, and he has his business in Austin. When I visit my boyfriend, I like to go to Luby's for dinner; it's one of the best restaurants. They have good food and excellent service, starting with the staff. My boyfriend has been going to Luby's for 40 years and usually goes five days a week. He's not an occasional customer; he's a regular. The waitresses treat him very well; there are no complaints about that. But yesterday, we were about to start eating when the cashier came to our table and, in a loud and rude voice, said, "If you want coffee, you have to give me your credit card to charge it." Mike and I looked at each other, both surprised by her bad behavior. We told her no, we didn't want coffee. After she left, she left a bitter taste in our mouths and we didn't want to eat anymore. We put our food to go. In my opinion, it's not the way any employee should treat a customer the way she did. Not too much, her name is Sonia.

Always welcome finding a lubys. They've had ups and downs the last few years but today,in…read moreAustin, they were up. I was greeted by a classic rock track playing Moody Blues overhead. Nice start. This place is cavernous and has a long well stocked food line to go with it. I found pretty much typical lubbys fare on display. Always quite a spread for a cafeteria. They have a smaller serving called a LuAnn platter. It's a reduced entree portion with two sides and bread. Always a bargain and more than enough. Today I got the 1/4 fried chicken white. It consisted of a perfectly fried breast wing piece. I added mashed potatoes and gravy and fried okra. When I ask for the diner roll the server ask, butter on it? As he reached for a brush in a clarified dish of butter,I let Out and enthusiastic," Yes please". And he brushed on a beautiful glaze of butter. Add ice tea for a sweltering Austin day refresh and you have a winner. These cafeterias are disappearing just as we need the value most. I recommend as soon as possible you... Go!

First off let me say I would have never know this place existed if a friend of mine who recently…read morestarted working there hadn't told me about it! which I'm glad he did, I mean seriously had it not been for him I never would of had any reason to be in the COA housing authority much less that there was a café/rest. there, none the less here's my take on the place. Upon entering I was a bit confused and a little leary looked like and was set up like school cafeteria but don't be deceived, it's totally not I was approached by a very professionally dressed and nice female who I assumed was the hostess/mgr. that explained the menu ordering system to me(later found out she was owner) anyway thanked her and went on about my business because I was hungry, checked out menu for day big chalk board with the "special" of the day and the fresh Entrees and soups of the day in addition to there usual menu items, burgers, sandwiches, ect. the entrees this day were a "smothered chicken breast" looked like a chicken marsella type dish (looked yummy) & a squash curry casserole which looked great also, but I opted for the fresh soup of day & salad bar, because the salad bar looked so great and was plenty of fresh ingredients & a great variety of items to make a wonderful salad and excellent choice of dressings also! and the soup OMG ! it was totally excellent !! the one I had don't remember the name of it but was a chicken soup with posale & cilantro in it big chunks of chicken and seasoned perfectly I loved it ! it was delicious I even purchased a second bowl it was so good the other soup was a potato&leak that looked excellent but didn't try, needless to say I was very satisfied with my lunch and would suggest to my other friends, kinda seems like a "weird" or strange place to eat inside the housing auth. bldg. but its great give it try if you're looking for some fresh good food, menu varies daily and they cater also please give their web site a look only open from 11a- 330 or 4 p but well worth trying! just my take on this not so well know place ! they do catering also!!
