We never even got started here. We were staying at a nearby hotel and called the restaurant to see about a reservation. They said they don't take them, but I could be placed on the waitlist which was 25 minutes. We walked over to the place about 15 minutes later and they told us it would be 40 minutes. When I told them they put us on the waitlist and took our name and number they acted like they didn't care. Since we had theater tickets we couldn't wait. A family told me they called a week prior to secure a table and they were treated the same as we were. Sorry, but we won't be back. read more

There's another new spot in Grand Center. Taking over the old space of Kota Grill is Lücha Mexican Soul Food. I give em 3 1/2 stars for the food, rounded up for some extras. It's a nice casual-sleek decor with a big bar and a couple TVs. The majority of the menu is tacos (a wide selection) and burritos. There was also a pozole featured that sounded intriguing, as well as a bunch of sides. I tried a "mole verde" burrito (pork) ($10), a veggie burrito ($10) and a lamb taco ($4) The burritos are pretty damn big. There is a lot of rice and black beans in the burritos, and the shell is pretty dense. The pork in my burrito was very tender, you could tell it had been cooking for a while. I wasn't blown away but overall I found it to be warm and comforting. The veggie burrito was primarily spears of roasted zucchini and a small amount of mushrooms, along w/ rice n beans. The lack of veggie variety was a disappointment. On the plus side, the zucchini was tender and delicious with a fire-roasted taste. I definitely got the "mexican soul food" concept. The food has a comforting, uncomplicated home-style vibe to it. The lamb taco was pretty damn good. $4 seems like a lot for a taco but these are pretty big and hearty. Bigger than the ones at Mission. There wasn't much besides the meat in the taco, but it was enjoyable. The burritos came with some cool little side salads. Once was a cabbage slaw with some pieces of white Mexican cheese. Sounds weird but it actually worked well. The other was a cactus salad with some cheese and onion. This was really good. The veggie burrito also came with a few plantain fries that were quite nice, great for dipping in the delicious smoky house-made salsa. There was some cool house music mix playing in the background that kept a nice upbeat vibe. Our service was also good. I'm looking forward to going back and trying some more tacos, and also that pozole. Lucha is definitely worth checking out. read more

My score is a 4.5/5 but why not round up, right? I had my first experience with Lucha last night for dinner with my cousin. Our waiter was really, really friendly and informative. I believe his name is Sanjay. We started the meal with guacamole and chips, and I had a Mojito. First off, I was suprised that the guacamole was not blended and was served "chunk" style. It was still very good and fresh. My mojito was really good! I was slightly dissappointed that they didn't have frozen margaritas or strawberry mojitos, but I'll take a good traditional mojito over a fair strawberry one any day. For the meal, I had (Asada) steak, lamb, and (Al Pastor) pork tacos with rice. All of them were good. The trio of salsas on the table added much to the flavor. The pork was my favorite of the three. It had really good flavor all around. The steak was well prepared but I felt that it, and the lamb, really needed the salsa to kick them up a notch. My cousin had the greens with her tacos, which I tried and were good, flavored flash fried greens. I like the ambiance of Lucha and like that the restaurant is trying different promotions and DJ music nights to attract new customers. First time visiting and I have to say it was pretty good. It was taco Tuesday, so all of the specialty tacos were just a dollar. This was really great if you want to sample all the different offerings that they have, and I certainly made a great effort to do so. Probably my favorite was the fish tacos but I can't say that any of them tasted anything short of delicious. The rest of the menu looks pretty good but we did not sample much more than the tacos. We did order the chips and salsa and I found the salsa to be a significant upgrade from what you would find at any other Mexican style restaurant. The Decour an ambience was nice; it was easy to have a conversation at the table and not hear everyone around you. Service was good, not great. As far as how they handled the food and clearing the table it was excellent, I felt our server was a little more direct than I was comfortable with. That was probably more of a personality thing so I would not judge the whole restaurant review on just this. First of all there isn't a rating low enough for this place. I have been to Mexico several times and have had more conversations spoken in English than I did at this establishment. There was literally no conversation with us other than "are you ready to order?" That was it. The service sucked, did not receive 2 out of the 3 drinks ordered, even after asking twice. Food was set abruptly on the table and literally no "enjoy your meal"...nothing. I have never encountered customer service like this....do not go here. They need courses in customer service and how about a smile....unhappy here, don't want to speak the language???? Adios!!! Don't let the proverbial border door hit you on the way out! read more

The worst service I've ever had I made reservations at 545 pm for three on Saturday the 8th of June, first we asked to sit somewhere and the talked in Spanish for ten minutes before sitting us somewhere else , we sat there for 15 mins before they even took or order , then we ordered nachos to share and three liquor beverages, we got one drink and no one ever came back to check on us, 45 minutes passed and two of us didn't have drinks, I guess we weren't spending enough money or something, they brought our drinks after 45 mins which we didn't except, never got a bill, put what we owed on table and left, went across the street and it was way busier and got our drink in less than 5mins, this was very disappointing have been wanting to try it but will never return and I will tell anyone that listens to me how bad the service was. read more

Found this place wondering around at supper time, just as they flipped on the OPEN sign. There was 9 of us & they were super accommodating. They had a margarita special which was good. We ordered ceviche, tacos, and burritos & everyone loved their food & drinks. They serve the food with a cool condiment tray which you need to try. Especially the cactus. The burritos came with 2 sides which I couldn't eat because my burrito was huge (they all were). I had the carnitas burrito. My husband had the fish & chips burrito. read more

A girlfriend and I stumbled upon this place across from the Fox because the event we planned to attend at Anew had a line wrapped around the corner and it was freezing outside . I'm so glad we did. It was a little awkward at first because the greeter wanted to seat us at a communal table or the bar when their were several open tables that just needed to be cleaned. When we asked he happily obliged so no big deal . We were seated by the window -perfect for people watching on Grand :) We started with guacamole. It was perfectly balanced although so chunky there were wedges of avo in it. Easy fix with a spoon . I had the taco trio. These are street tacos . None of that Tex mex crap that STL is full of . I had two chicken and one fish . They were overstuffed so definitely not easy to eat if i was on the street but I'm not complaining because they were deliciously. Perfectly seasoned I had a side of greens which i was surprised to see in a Mexican restaurant but these are not southern greens. These are blanched, sautéed and well seasoned greens without meat. I also had plantains and i couldn't stop eating them!! My friend had fish tacos with beans and plantains and she raved about her food as well. This came with a tray of fresh toppings such as pickled cabbage and cactus , salsas for the table. We ordered two sangrias which were 8 bucks -great deal for a delicious 24oz drink . As stuffed as we were us fatties had to get the Churros . Nothing spectacular here but a solid end to a great meal. Our waiter was polite and attentive . We never once had to ask for water . If you are going to charge me for chips and salsa, can you please at least warm them up? A California Burrito is not signified by the sauce you use, but a delicious handful of french fries, coming from a California native. Fries were listed as an ingredient on the menu but were, alas, missing from my "California" Burrito. The rice seemed a little over done and bland. The beans tasted like they came straight out of a can. Ultimately, we left parched due to lack of service and in want of something with flavor. Overpriced for what we received. read more

We came here to eat before a Fox show. We were nearly two hours early and the restaurant wasn't packed yet. As we were seated by the host, the table next to us grabbed him to ask for menus and a waiter, since they had not seen either. We didn't have menus either, just silverware, but there was a table tent with a QR code so we just used our phones. We sat there for 15 minutes with no contact, not even a waiter saying they'll be right over. And there were waiters at other tables working. The table next to us had walked out at this point. I grabbed the host and said we were trying to go to the show, and was our waiter on break or something? Because we hadn't seen anyone. He left, but nothing happened. So after another five minutes we walked out too. I regret not telling the two women waiting at the door that they probably shouldn't bother. read more

Came before a show at the Fox. Came extra early to avoid crowds and have plenty of time without being rushed before the show. Waited without drink refills or food for close to an hour after ordering. We were seated by the hostess who noticed groups leaving as food never came. She noticed us about 50 minutes after ordering looking at our watches. She offered to check on our food. Ten minutes later our waiter told us they would not have time to make our food. We had even tried to keep it simple, ordered only tacos. I understand that everyone is short staffed, but don't fill tables if you don't have the kitchen staff to feed them . It was our first time to try this place. I'll give overall a 3.5. I came to try their 1$ taco Tuesday night with some friends and was pretty excited about that. They have a nice selection of tacos, made with corn tortillas. I tried the tacos al pastor, pescado, tinga and borrego. I wish there was more cilantro and onion on the side, and juicier limes. Overall it was flavorful. The service was unfortunately not good : our waiter took for ever to bring us our food, he wasn't checking on us and we had to remind him to check on our food. Bottom line we had to wait 30 minutes to get our tacos meanwhile people seated at the bar or at other tables with another waiter got everything earlier. I wish we could get them right away. I thought the corn tortilla was also too thick, and less enjoyable because we got our food kind of cold. I would give it a try some other day, but will seat at the bar this time. (Or hope to get a better waiter) Tips : you have to order first 3 tacos right away, then they allow you to order them one by one. We tried Lucha because we were looking for something good and close since we were going to a play across the street at The Fabulous Fox Theater boy did we choose wrong. When we walked in the hostess was extremely nice and greeted us, there was a group that was seated at the same time as us and then a group that was sat shortly after us right at the table in front of us. The hostess said that a server would be over to take care us shortly and she left we waited for over 10 mins for someone to stop as we watched other tables get served. Another 5 mins go by and I just flag a young guy down and ask was he or server and he says "I can be" I said ok great! We try and order our food but he was in such a rush we couldn't complete our order before he was off. We waited for him to come back with our drinks for another 15 mins and he never did I had to flag him down again. The tables that came in with us were already getting food now at this point I'm annoyed and feeling like we're being purposely looked over. She l at this point we had been there almost 45 mins and still didn't have food or drinks. I finally asked to speak to them manger which they were reluctant about getting but he finally came. We explained the situation and he apologized and as he retook our order as were talking to the manger the server finally comes back with our food which was all plated together and then when he realizes that we're complaining he scoofs at us. The food was mediocre the Lamb Birra quesadilla style was good but the rest was not worth an hour wait. At this point the other tables have left were still there now waiting for the check we waited over 15+ plus and still didn't receive a bill at that point we stood up and said either give us our bill or we're leaving we waited another 5 mins and walked out and said tell the manger thanks for the meal. Once we were seating it was after 6 before anyone came to our table to even ask for drinks we also ordered our main same time . We also told the waitress we had a show we were all attending so to speed things up we would settle our tabs even though we still had no food . Another 40 min pass no food we finally get the manager explain we now have 20 min to get to our show and we need a refund he states yea he understood we have no time to argue the refund was minus our one beverage each and kept the tip amount . Great food - I had the Tres Tacos and my wife had the Bistec Burrito. I chose the Carnitas, Tinga and Pescado as my 3 choices. The Carnitas was definitely the standout. The meat was juicy and flavorful, and the skin was crispy and delicious. I chose greens and rice as my sides, and the greens had so much flavor stacked into them it was ridiculous. Not sure what's with all the other negative reviews. Maybe they don't understand that this place is located across the street from the Fox so if you come anytime before 8pm it's gonna be packed and service will be understandably slower. Been here twice and have loved the food both times. The tacos are incredibly stacked full of huge portions of meat, and SO good and juicy. I got the el pastor and tocina (pork belly) both times and they were divine. The shrimp cocktail is also amazing if you like a Mexican version with avocados. We also tried the Chile Relleno and wow! It's totally different and vegetarian, but a good different. The sauce, pears, goat cheese, apple, and pepper were all perfect together. The salsa there is very unique and good too, more of an orange type smoked salsa. Don't listen to the others, the food is creative, plentiful and hearty in portions, and it is tasty and textured very well. The tacos are definitely the most stacked here than any other taco joint in STL. AND my Mexican girlfriend (who is very picky about mexican) loves it! Highly recommend. read more

On a previous visit to Grand Center with our friends, the K's, we had planned to dine at Lucha, prior to jazz at the Steward Center for Jazz. We arrived only to find it closed because, as it turns out, they are only open when the Fox has a performance (or perhaps other significant things at the Powell or Sheldon, I recommend you call them). This time, again with the K's, we planned better and had our first dinner at Lucha. They do not take reservations, so we arrived at ~5:30pm in order to make a 7:30 jazz performance. I think winter weather may have affected attendance at the Fox, but this worked well, although they were not crowded. I recommend a bare minimum of 1:30 hours before a performance. I must confess, I am always skeptical of more upscale Mexican places and also new and popular places. I prefer an earthy Mom 'n' Pop with nothing fancy. I also must confess that I was quite pleased and am happy to report that Lucha was very good. The food the four of us had, we would all order again. I read mixed reviews and found none of the issues. Yes, it is a little pricy for tacos, but they were excellent, all well-conceived and not encumbered with silly frills. The portions are also decent. Many such places add insult injury by charging a lot and giving you just a taste. Our service was also very good although the server could work on his pronunciations of some of the dishes. Mr K and I each ordered a three taco plate. I chose al Pastor, Birria and Pescado. All were very good. I would easily eat any of these again. The al Pastor was probably not quite the authentic "off the trompo" meat that you get at El Fogoncito or El Tizoncito in Mexico City, but it was tasty and not dried out. There were two lamb offerings, so I asked our server which he recommended and followed his recommendation to the Birria. I did not regret it. It was juicy, but not so much as to dissolve the tortilla. Although well-seasoned, I could really taste the lamb . Delicious. My Pescado was in a tempura batter, which I feared might be big and greasy, but it was not. The piece of fish was so big I could not fold the tortilla. It was mild and very good. Mr K had a similar experience with his tacos. They provided three salsas, but I could only distinguish two, so am not sure if they have three varieties. These are clearly thoughtfully house made and were wonderful on the tacos. For sides, I had very good simple Frijoles Negroes and Seared Collards. I was skeptical of seared collards, since they can be tough if not well cooked. They were delicious, I loved both of these sides. Ms K had a large fish burrito with the same fish I had in my taco and very much enjoyed it. Ms T had a tostada with picadillo and was quite complimentary of it. The beef was nicely seasoned, but not too spicy for her. Again, it was generous. Some time back, we ate at Mission Taco and I was sorely disappointed. I was kind of expecting the same result here. While Mission taco failed completely, Lucha hit the mark solidly. We are at Grand Center at least 25 times a year for jazz. I will eat here again, for sure. I rate it a strong four stars on one visit and hope future visits are consistent with this experience. read more

It was busy due to the fox having a show and waited a while, which was no big deal. We were finally seated at a six top and sat by strangers. Our server took 15 minutes to take our order and 1 hour later we finished our food. Service was poor, we didn't have utensils and were never asked if wed like another drink. While the margarita was good (fresh lime juice makes a marg), our food was not good. My other half literally said "this rice is gross." I've never heard the man complain that much about food, let alone rice. Our burritos were bland and filled with beans and rice with very little meat. We asked for a box and waited another 20 minutes before a bus boy saw me looking around for service and came to the rescue. Get me the hell out of here! Very sad, but Mission taco has a similar business model and has Way better tasting, flavorful food, beers on tap that are not out (umm, its Friday at 6pm and if you're out of half your beers you don't manage your bar well). My friend and I came in for lunch but were surprised by the above average prices, so we decided to split an appetizer and eat at home after. The service was extremely slow despite the restaurant only having two other parties in it - our one appetizer took 40 minutes, and the waitress took 15 minutes to bring our check afterward. The molotes tasted great so that's why I'm giving three stars, but we probably won't be coming back again unless we have lots of time to spare. read more

The margaritas are so fresh they taste like they came from a magical margarita tree. Possibly the best margarita (and tacos but I'll get to that in a minute) that I've had in the St. Louis area. The margarita is made from fresh squeezed lemon and lime juice and contains minimal ingredients. Which, in my opinion, is what makes it so good. I came on a Tuesday night which is $1 taco night. Again, the best tacos by far that I've had in the city. My favorite was the Pescado taco; fried fish topped with a crunchy slaw. And huge bonus, the tacos come with 3 house made sauces ranging from mild to hot. The flavors of the tacos and the accompanying sauces was phenomenal. I will absolutely be back and would recommend this place to any of my friends. It's also confidently located close to the Fox, Powell Hall, and the Sheldon. read more

In terms of service I had a great experience with the server. But if I were to review this place solely on the food that means I have a problem with pricing as the food's price does not match its quality, I bought birria tacos a few weeks ago and I was pretty disappointed with the sides I received which were salty beans and Dry rice that was practically molded into the cup. The tacos themselves were a bit salty. The meat was alright but It's not good enough to try again. In summary, I will give this place another chance in the future but I definitely would not recommend it. 4 stars for service 2 stars for food. read more

Poor customer service. And the food is subpar. In all fairness seems like the staff is fairly young and very unsure of how to manage a restaurant. Almost every table complained that service was slow. We stood there for 20 mins to be acknowledged before seated. Asked for napkins they literally brought two napkins because there were two of us at the table. Food tasted like Taco Bell. Nothing special and definitely cannot compete with other Mexican restaurants within walking distance. Have them 2 stars bc the margarita was pretty good. read more
