To be honest, i've passed by here so many times and never thought much of it. Nothing screamed, "TRY ME". It was always a restaurant in the passing. Lucha Tigre was one of the first restaurants I'd heard of when I got to UNC -- but because it's located past campus across MLK, I never really found it convenient enough to go. And then I moved off junior year and brought my car down. So I finally went two years later. I've heard Lucha Tigre is at its prime during dinner or late at night. My review is strictly based on my experience with Sunday brunch, which I had with a few friends a little while back. They had a nice variety of breakfast dishes -- unique ones like kimchi pancakes and classics like huevos rancheros. But what caught my eye was the last item on the brunch menu -- the Chicken and Waffle. I didn't even have to think twice about it. It was basically the restaurant version of love at first sight. The staff was on point that day, and brought the food out rather quickly. I expected my dish to be a Waffle House-sized waffle with two little chicken wings, maybe a drumstick. I've never been more happy to have been wrong in my entire life. Out comes the biggest piece of fried chicken breast I've ever seen in my life. I even got a massive drumstick too! They lay on top of one of those big, thick waffles that you make with the commercial waffle irons. The chicken was glazed with a honey-chipotle sauce and was spiced to perfection. And the waffle? Green tea flavored. I strongly urge you all to give it a try. You might look at the $12 price tag and think, "Wow, is it worth it?" Believe me, I was skeptical at first. Intent is there, ambience is solid, but execution is mediocre. I had high hopes for this hipster place but I was a bit let down by how my meal came out. Overall Lucha Tigre just has a case of almost-there-itis. Everything looks appealing and is certainly well-intentioned but there's just something missing. Case in point, my pork belly buns which I anticipated eagerly, were much too tough and chewy. With such a fatty cut, this was sort of surprising, because it's usually a pretty forgiving piece of meat. I guess I drew an unfair comparison to those of Momofuku Noodle Bar in NYC, which are phenomenal, melt-in-your-mouth fantastic.... and these were just.... not. In addition, I ordered the mu-shu tofu tacos which had the unfortunate quality of inducing a severe spike in systolic blood pressure -- in non-medical terms, they were overloaded with salty, salty mu-shu sauce. Unsalvageable, though the tofu was pretty tasty. My boyfriend got the empanadas and they were ultra-fried to the max and teeny weeny. I tried a bite of the Asian pulled pork one and found it utterly flavorless.. what a waste! I was really surprised to see that the prices were so low (almost everything under $10) but I realized that the dishes themselves are fairly small. Pork belly buns were listed under "Entrees" but they really can't possibly be an entree on their own unless you're about 5 years old. Or a recovering anorexic. Lucha Tigre has promise. If it were a kid I would tack on the comment "Needs to apply itself" on the report card. I would probably come again out of curiosity for the rest of the menu, but not to fulfill any particular craving. read more

I came here for a family dinner and we were all very happy with our experience! We came hungry and devoured the bulgogi beef nachos. They weren't huge so would work well as both an appetizer or entree! For my entree I had such a hard time deciding because everything looked amazing, but went with the sweet and spicy tofu. At first I didn't really feel the heat, but after a few bites it hit me! The sauce was a perfect balance of sweet and spicy. They were very generous with the portion. After eyeing this place for a very long time...we finally made it there. This place take Asian and Latin fusion to next level! I started off with 2$ mimosa which was okay...nothing out of the ordinary. We then had the spicy chicken noodle, red curry empanada & poblano corn empanada. The noodle was great...I loved it...right amount of sauce, veggie n chicken ratio. The empanadas came with with dipping sauces which were heavenly. They had two types of guacamole (so many choices...I loved it) I ordered the sake ginger guacamole. Loved the presentation with pomegranate seeds and three types of chips. The empanadas tasted great. Both the empanadas were made out of different dough which was very different from other places. Finally we had green tea crepes for dessert, which didn't have too much of green tea flavour as I would have expected, but was good. This restaurant's food was just mediocre for the price. It was a take out Oder and they put the cold salad on the bottom of the bag with the hot entrees on top. No napkins or utensils or condiments. We were staying at a hotels so obviously that would have been helpful. I could forgive all of that except the staff was EXTREMELY rude. BRILLIANT! Mexican-Asian fusion is something that I've waited on for a very long time, and I had no idea I'd been waiting on it until this place came to Chapel Hill. First off, the decor is a neat, modern, eclectic montage of various Latino and Asian icons, and the place offers a great ambiance that can be either casual or very nice. My favorite dishes are the Kimchi Nachos and the Pad Thai Al Pastor, since these are the two classic fusion dishes on the menu. The Kimchi Nachos are an appetizer, but I've eaten them as a whole meal on occasion. The Pad Thai Al Pastor can be a hit or miss, as some of my friends have commented on a lack of flavor. I personally enjoy the Mexican spice of the chicken in the otherwise Thai dish. At nighttime, the bar section turns into a pretty happening place to be, offering a great selection of cocktails and house mixed drinks. It still retains the more modern, casual vibe, since they still continue the restaurant side as well. A big bonus, also, is that PARKING IS AVAILABLE. They share a lot with a few other stores, and I've never really encountered any parking issues. Personally, this is one of my favorite places to eat in Chapel Hill, and I think the inventive mix of the two cuisines is one that anyone can enjoy. read more

We came in on a Sunday evening for a family dinner, and my parents (who are into very traditional Asian cuisine and are a bit skeptical of Asian Fusion) were pleasantly surprised! Service was fine - we didn't have to wait too long for our food, but we didn't get a lot of attention either, even though the restaurant wasn't too full. The food itself is really delicious, and a wonderful melange of Mexican and Asian cuisine! Here's what we wound up ordering: TAQUIZA (TACOS) WITH MU SHU PORK: my dad scarfed this down. I don't eat pork, so I can't say much, but by the looks of it, the tacos are really good. The smallest portion of all of the entrees that we ordered. HONEY CHIPOTLE CHICKEN: the chicken was divine. Perfectly grilled with a bit of smoky flare and spiciness but still very sweet from the honey. Smells delicious and tastes delicious. Bok choi dipped in the sauce was amazing as well. I'm not a huge fan of wasabi, so the mashed potatoes weren't my favorite, but my mom absolutely adores wasabi, and she raved about the mashed potatoes here. GENERAL TSO'S CHICKEN BOWL: for those of you who want to stick with the American-Chinese food classics, this is for you. I'm usually not a fan of General Tso's chicken, but the texture of the chicken was actually really good in this dish. The sauce... was.... well your typical General Tso's sauce, but I would say that the chicken itself was really good! HEAT SEEKER TIGER SHRIMP: delicious. Love that you can sub out tofu too if you would like. Perfect amount of heat with the ideal crispiness in a fried rice dish. Shrimp was cooked perfectly. ELOTES (CORN ON THE COB): pretty good, but messy to eat. Not the most flavorful corn I've had. CUCUMBER WATERMELON MARGARITA: okay. Other than the color of the drink and the garnish of a slice of watermelon and cucumber on my cup, I didn't really taste any watermelon... very strong on the alcohol. Overall, a really great experience! I'll need to try more of their drinks because those are what people talk about the most, but the food is really good too! read more

Enjoyed lunch on a Saturday in Chapel Hill, NC at a uniquely, flavorful place, Lucha Tigre. After we were seated, we were greeted by our fabulous, helpful and cheerful server, Amanda. She rocked! My husband and I ordered and split several appetizers and a dessert. First up were the pork belly buns and fresh summer spring rolls. The dough of the pork belly buns was soft and to be honest symbolized the idea of eating the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Sorry Dough Boy! The sauce was spicy and the big cucumber help cool it down. Nothing could be better than spicy and cool all in one bite. Next on the table were the fresh summer rolls. The fresh combination of flavors; mint, cilantro and peanut sauce made this roll. We wanted our taste buds to explore some more so we ordered the steamed pork dumplings from the brunch menu. There were 5 and each were dipped heavily in the citrus-soy dipping sauce. The dumpling was cooked beautifully. They were not dry nor burned. They were moist and popped with flavor at every bite. We ended our fabulous eating adventure with a slice of tres leches cake. It was light, just the right amount of sweetness and oh so moist. This will be one of my top list craving desserts. Big thanks to Lucha Tigre for the preview of the restaurant at an Elite Yelp event last week! This place is conveniently located in Chapel Hill near Franklin St, just a few miles from I-40. There's quite a bit of parking in the lot and on the side street off of MLK. The restaurant is tastefully decorated with such a chill atmosphere- the patio was my favorite part! I really enjoyed the freshness of the jalapeno margaritas- the spicy rim was great & the fresh jalapeno garnish was awesome! I loved their homemade salsas and chips (the habanero salsa was my favorite). The Asian spring rolls were a close second to the chips & salsa. The entrees are mostly tapas style, so they're small plates (perfect for sharing!). I highly recommend the Asian BBQ pork tacos with housemade slaw... it's a unique fusion that you will love :) The General Tso's chicken was good but the Asian pork tacos took the cake. Surprisingly enough, the owner was previously a founder of Five Star Chinese in downtown Raleigh! All in all, the food was great & drinks were delicious... I was surprised to see this place not packed at 130 pm. I'm assuming I just missed the lunch rush. They are located on a corner with a huge private lot. There is outdoor seating but was way too hot for us to sit outside. After hearing about the empanadas, I wanted to try them all! But I ended up getting the lunch special which only allowed for two. I chose the chicken (which was a little dry-I wouldn't recommend or get that one again) and the SHIITAKE QUESO (mmmmmm)! It tasted like the pastry was made out of sweet potato. I HIGHLY recommend the shiitake queso and BULGOGI BEEF taco combo. They allow you to mix and match with the lunch combo. I'd pass on the sake ginger guacamole. Vibrant and bold decor with a wild mix of Latino and Asian fusion. Just came to check out the bar and was impressed by the collection of tequilas. They had an equal number of blanco, reposado and anejo choices. The guava caipirinha was a little sweet but they sadly ran out of cachaça so I had the last one. I like the stick of sugar cane in the glass. Added a nice touch. Had to try the Avion, serviced with a spicy tomato chaser. Very smooth going down. The decor and music selection was hip and I was surprised it was fairly empty on a Saturday night. Perhaps it was the locale, away from the Franklin strip, that made it so much quieter. I've been here multiple times for lunch and dinner. I would say that my dinner experience was definitely much better. The butternut squash tacos are good and definitely worth trying. The other Asian-oriented tacos, like the mushu pork and the bulgogi were a little off though. The pork was too salty and the bulgogi wasn't flavored like bulgogi that I've had at Korean restaurants (maybe ratio of spices and sauces). I'm not sure if this was intentional or not, but I was definitely surprised by the taste. I've had the bokchoy side as well, and it was too oily and had too much soy sauce, making it too salty again. The general tso's chicken was a little better. I'm not a fan of Americanized Asian food, but the chicken had a good texture - chopped into small cubes with a sweet and slightly tangy sauce, it was firm on the outside but more tender inside. They need to improve their rice, though, for sure. read more

I really love the ambiance of this restaurant and bar. Walking in I noticed the velas (candles) that were lit and the creative dash of luchadoras meets Jet Li. The service was impeccable and the waiter was attentive and friendly. The bar is super cool and has a little bit of the Day of the Dead feel to it. Looks like a great place for a drink if you're not ready to eat or waiting on a table. I have heard of waits here but today there were open tables so early lunch is a great idea as it filled up quickly after that. I had an Empanada with shitake and cheese to start and then had the Avocado Citrus salad with chicken. I didn't like the breading of the empanada very much so I ate the filling instead. The salad was thoughtfully prepared and presented but the dressing tasted a little off. Would have liked a choice. I would definitely come back and try some different items on the menu-it is creative and I'm interested to see if I find something I like better. Came here late one night for dinner and sat at the bar which was a huge plus because they had a bar specific menu with extra deals. Fries were delicious, the sauce had a curry like flavor. Also got the pork buns. which were just okay. Would prolly not try again. Off the bar menu my bf got the tacos which were pretty unexciting. The meat was well cooked but no extra toppings. Weren't bad, just not amazing. I got the avacado citrus chicken salad which was awessomeee. I'm rarely impressed with salads and was a huge fan of this one. Would def get it again! The chips had a good texture and were crunchy, but the best part is that they didn't become super floppy after the meat was on top of it. Would definitely recommend this. Pork belly bao/bun - 4/5. A little too much hot sauce/ vinegar in the bun itself, but adding the hoisin makes it just right. Would definitely recommend this. Empanadas (Corn) - 3/5. Waitress told me that the corn was very highly rated so I just had to give it a try (even though i wasn't planning to). It was simple, but tasty. Came in for taco night on tuesdays where they have discounted tacos as long as you pick up a beverage. The Duck was very good and I have to say the fish as my favorite with the chorizo and potato being pretty good as well. Their fusion recipes really mix the best of korean, chinese and mexican together for stuff like bulgogi nachos and classic chinese fare such as general tsos chicken as well. Id be confident ordering anything here and I wish we lived closer to it. Its a must stop when we have plans in the chapel hill area for us and should be for you too. Cool-weird spot. Not much when you walk/drive past, easy to miss but the inside is well decorated and the outdoor space is my favorite. The food is Latin-Asian fusion so you can expect to find dishes from both cuisines on the menu. I've tried a few of their dishes but did not like most of them, the one I kept going back for was the Pollo Saltado, a chicken version of the traditional Peruvian Lomo Saltado. Their chips and dip appetizer is also very good; delicious and affordable. Our party of four women were looking forward to dinner at Lucha Tigre this evening. Just as the food was arriving, one of us took ill. She is a dignified 80-year-old, and so was completely mortified. The staff were all just wonderful, bringing napkins and water, cleaning the floor and, at our request, boxing our dinners and providing the check so we could pay and get our friend home. Once she was all settled, the rest of us enjoyed our meals very much. We were all so very grateful to have been treated with such kindness and will definitely return and tip generously. read more

Meh. The overall concept is all over the place. Attempting to combine Asian-fusion and Mexican Food could either be a magical flavorgasm of unexpected pairings sent from heaven or a complete and total epic fail of monumental proportions. In either case, bland is unacceptable. Lucha Tigre did not make the cut. Heat seeker shrimp-very bland. They came out hot which was a plus, however, there was no memorable flavor to mention. The celery was overpowering and did not, along with the carrots, compliment the shrimp. Also, the name Heat Seeker lead me to believe there would be a little kick of spiciness, there was none. Zero heat. Coconut curry white fish-the fish was over cooked and not fresh. The portion size and the fact that it came out hot was nice. The sauce was non existent and there was no curry or coconut flavor to be found on the dish. With the amount of easily accessible and deeply rich curries that can be found in many restaurants, if your going to serve a "curry," you must come correct. Zero stars for the fish "curry." Yes I used quotations twice, it's that real. Hoisin glazed duck breast- I was not asked how I would like the duck breast cooked, scary sign. The 1st flavor to hit my palette was of char grilled smokiness which can be fkn delicious. Unfortunately, the duck had no flavor outside of the hoisin sauce that was squeezed on top. I requested extra hoisin to spread on the broccoli and rice as the dish was pretty dry overall. Bulgogi tacos-the little one thought they were great. The adults agreed that they were nothing special. This place does a great job of creating a Mexican/Asian fusion experience. They mix popular Asian dishes such as spring rolls and bulgogi beef with empanadas and tacos. There is also a great atmosphere and the drink menu is extremely original. Try one of the myriad of mojitos or be adventurous and try the Thai Chili Cilantro Martini. My personal favorite is the pork belly buns. A delicious slab of pork belly with a crispy refreshing cucumber in a steamed bun drizzled with a hoisin sauce and a little heat. Just out of this world. Another nice thing is that there is outdoor seating, so if its a particularly beautiful day outside, just grab a seat in their patio and enjoy the sun. read more

I tried two of the vegetarian tacos - the General Tso's tofu and the butternut squash red curry. They were both good (but if I'm being picky, I wish the butternut squash wasn't quite so pureed, and I wish the tofu had green onions or cilantro on them for some freshness). My boyfriend tried the Beef Bulgogi and General Tso's chicken tacos and loved his (especially the bulgogi). The bok choy side was delicious! Great service, cute place, reasonable prices. Didn't know this place existed until got dragged there on a girls' night out. I was so surprised with the quality of the food. We definitely ordered too much for three of us, but it was worth it. The highlight of the meal is ironically the side of bokcoy! It is large, flavorful and I can eat a whole plate of it. Beside the mind-blowing bokcoy, we ordered bolgogi tacos, boiled soybeans, duck confit fried rice, tartar guacamole, and buns. They were all really good, but I would not recommend the fried rice if you don't like greasy food, if you love duck fat (like me) then definitely order it! The only star that was taken off is because of the noisy level... we went on a Friday night and the place did get filled up pretty fast, with the TV and people, we can barely hear each other. read more

Second time at Lucha Tigre happened to be free hug Friday. I didn't get any hugs, but everything else was fantastic. There is an excellent beer selection and the bartender made the basil mojito that I requested, it was delicious. The first visit we got the beef bulgogi nachos that everyone raves about and they were good, but I wanted to try something different this go around and was not disappointed! We did the tapas thing with crispy Vietnamese spring rolls, pork belly buns (ridiculously good, as noted on the menu), and one each of the empanadas, which were quite savory; my favorite being the red curry chicken and least favorite being the shiitake and queso. Service both times was stellar and prices are fair for exceptional food. I recommend Lucha Tigre for a first date as well as business dinners. The atmosphere is casual, but elegant and it is sure to impress anyone you invite. Next time, I want my free hug, though. read more
