Dive Bar Oasis located in the Westbottoms. Lucky Boys is the definition of no frills, but it has a unique identity. It knows what it is (and subsequently what it is not). I imagine full-heartly that Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson would approve of Lucky Boys and could be found clandestinely puffing on a cigarette in the back by the now defunct cigarette machine. It is dark, dare I say a tad bit dingy, and I don't think they serve PBR, but Hamms is definitely offered. It's that kind of place...cold cans of beer aren't paired with a glass, and that's just okay. Just in case you're a tap beer person, be warned they almost exclusively carry LogBoat taps which are out of Columbia. So, if you aren't familiar with LogBoat Snapper IPA's, my personal choice, then you may be trying something new you aren't familiar with but, you won't be getting a domestic on draft. Also, did I mention there's a pool table? The food menu is comprised of a few well-done bar food options, most of which are served between two buns, but if pizza is more your beer buddy of choice have no fear because fortunati pizzeria is attached and available for ordering. But believe me, the sandwiches and fries are so worthy of an order. The now extinct fish sandwich was my favorite, but have no fear they have hinted at a new fish favorite (maybe a shrimp roll) being added to the menu soon. The hot chicken sandwich is excellent, and so is the burger. Nothing here misses if you come in with your expectations being set at a handheld meal that compliments drinking and not with a stuffy attitude. Caution you may get messy. The burger is savage, dripping with the good stuff and covered in melted orange-yellow cheese. But, my go-to now is Lucky Boy's take on a hot chicken sandwich fried golden brown, crispy, and with just a hint of spice. The coleslaw accompanying it wasn't too wet and was mild in flavor, adding just a nice cut of freshness and creaminess to the fried salty sandwich. Mentioning being fried, the fries themselves are textbook. They're "golden brown and delicious" while being in between thick and thin and also still maintaining the true essence of potato. I can't wait to try the poutine promised to be loaded with cheese curds and smothered with brown gravy. Anything with those fries as a base is a money dish, I would suggest chili cheese fries of some sort for the fall because that would fit in nicely with the menu. It's a small but mighty showing for a small but magnificent bar. Lucky Boys has gotten lucky with the perfect mix of kitsch and nostalgia. First things first, I'm a sucker for a great dive bar. As much as I can enjoy a trendy speakeasy, or an upscale taproom, I'd take a charming dive bar over a classy rooftop bar just about any day. To be completely honest I wasn't sure what to expect at Lucky Boys. The name doesn't offer much of an idea of ambiance, and all I had to go off of was that it's a favorite bar of a good friend of mine. I was a few minutes early to a party and walked in blind. As my eyes adjusted to the endless night that this bar provides, I realized I might have found the best true dive bar in KC. I'm sure it's partially the best right now because it's such a hidden gem - and while that phrase is thrown out there a lot, it really does apply here. I'm not sure if the best part about this bar are the velvet paintings that adorn the walls, the unpretentious bartenders, or the fact that they have on tap beer from a very small micro brewery in STL that I'd previously not heard of, it's all great. Nothing is supremely clean here, though the restrooms I found to be totally fine. I LOVED this place! Lucky Boys has been on my radar for a long time and I aways hear such great things about it. We finally went one night and I am so happy we did. We walked in and immediately both loved the vibe. The portrait paints on one of the walls were awesome and so fun to look at. Where else are you going to find a portrait of Jesus next to Elvis next to Willie Nelson. We sat down and looked over the menu- which didn't take long because the menu is rather small. Personally I love places with a small menu, not too many options and easy to decide. I ordered the burger and my boyfriend ordered the fried chicken sandwich. Both were AMAZING! This place is definitely a dive bar. I met a friend here on a Friday night since we were going out later to a concert close by. There is definitely a dark decor with many odd paintings on the wall (sorry, I didn't get pics of any of them) ranging from various animals to Jesus to matadors. There is a long bar, which is where we sat, and then there are tables around and pool. The menu is a raggedy piece of paper with about 5 items. We decided to split the Louisville hot chicken sandwich. The bartender was odd but nice and matched the aura of the place. The food came out pretty quickly and was hot to the touch, but it had not even a touch of spice to it. Even though it wasn't spicy, it was good and plenty to share. The fries were really good, too. They had some sort of batter on them. The bathroom was also interesting, plenty of funny reading entertainment on the walls. Great service, friendly guys that run the bar, make sure you're taken care of! My friend and I like to come here JUST for the poutine fries!!! We are 20-25 min away from here and we'll come maybe once a month. It can be loud and busy on weeknights, but it is nice they are open late!!! Love the divey vibes and grungy art. They even have a vending machine of cigarettes. Haha! So you know it's good. This is a fun place I like to take people who are out of town visiting, esp if they want a "local taste." I found this place because of a "late night food" list. I'm always looking for somewhere new to eat after 10pm and Lucky Boys has the kitchen open until 12:00! The Louisville Hot Chicken sandwich couldn't have been better. A tender chicken breast in a light batter that is saturated in a hot sauce. Great flavor and not overpowering for heat rookies. On top was a nice layer of creamy slaw with celery seeds and all held together by a bun that didn't collapse mid way thru. Excellent! My co-worker had nothing but positive things to say about his French Dip. The place was packed but the 1 bartender was hustling like his mortgage depended on it. Friendly, fast and professional. Always cool to see someone that can remain calm and efficient under pressure. The décor is tacky velvet paintings and graffiti style artwork. Very dark and old school divey. The way a bar is supposed to be. I can't wait to return via Uber and toss back a few at what looks like could be a new weekend destination watering hole for me. A group of about 15 of us went there for a friend's birthday. We all had a couple drinks and then were ready to move the party on. My friend's wife was trying to ask for her tab and the owner walked up and literally just lost it. He started banging his hands on the counter, telling her he was too busy and she could wait. In all my years in the restaurant industry, I had never seen anything like it. I honestly wondered if he was on some crazy drugs or something. Naturally my friend (husband of girl who was berated) asked what the problem was that would cause a member of the staff to be so aggressive. That was when the owner really lost it. Screamed at him to get out. My friend replied they would love to if everyone could just tab out. Then the psycho behind the bar proudly told everyone he was the owner of the place. Then we had 15 people trying to tab out because obviously they will never get another dollar from any of us that went there. The guys who did help were the most condescending staff I've ever seen. Ordered a sandwich and a well vodka soda. My total came to $20 & my friend's who ordered 2 sandwiches & a beer was $17. When I asked the guy behind the bar if they overcharged, his response was "more than likely we confused your order with someone else's" with no offer to reimburse me. I talked with my friends & walked back up to the bar & asked outright for a shot & he begrudgingly obliged. Great food and atmosphere as always but terrible service last night. The long haired bartender this had all gone down with was toasted by this point & was so rude to me after that. He grabbed my beer out of my hand and started shouting at me personally about how they had to close in 10 minutes after i was already visibly trying to finish my beer & leave (standing by the trash can). This is a really cool bar that also serves food. That probably reads a little weird, but I honestly mean it. You've got the old wood panels, a slightly dark, but not super dark and divey atmosphere, a pool table, cold drinks and a blue collar staff. Foodwise, when I was there they were serving a chicken sandwich, a catfish basket and a special of the day. The bartender that evening said they were working on adding a couple of bar style dishes to the menu, but were starting out small. You wouldn't think it driving past but the newly opened Lucky Boys is something really great. You walk in to a throwback in drinking establishments. Dark wood lines the walls, low but clear lighting glows throughout the room, and there is always a good song playing. I have been to the former Grandma's space about half a dozen times now, I can say I am a big fan. Last night I had dinner there going for two staples of the menu. The first was the patty melt, this is easily one of my favorite sandwiches but many people can't make a good product. The version here is on the money, great bread and a well griddled patty loaded with caramelized onions and cheese, served with fries. The second was a fried chicken sandwich served on a lite but slightly sweet roll topped with coleslaw, it too did not disappoint. The bar staff here are all pros and easily recognizable from other great places in town. The beer is cold and the drinks are strong. This is not a place for amateurs, this is a place where you go to have a good time and enjoy yourself. This place embodies what a neighborhood bar and grill should be. Looks like I got lucky (har har) enough to be the first person to upload a picture for this stylish new dive bar in the increasingly attractive to foodies West Bottoms! For such a new opening, Lucky Boys seems to know exactly what it is and who it's for. It's fairly dim inside, so you know you're in a cool bar in a hip, industrial part of town, but not dark enough where you can't see anything or it diminishes how much attentiveness obviously went into the decor and artwork. This place has real personality and automatically made me feel like I was somewhere I fit in, could hang out and relax every night, have some unpretentious beers (and I do love me some pretentious beer...so that's saying something), play some pool, and order some kickass food while I'm at it. And let me be one of the first to tell you, the food does not play second fiddle to everything else going on here. They have a small and focused menu, which I think is exactly what you have to do at this kind of establishment. Do a few things and do them better/differently than anywhere else in town. Lucky Boys's Louisville Chicken Sandwich does exactly that and immediately gets put on the shortlist for best sandwich in town. The sandwich is huge...definitely not skimping on the incredibly tender chicken or mountain of slaw piled between two fresh (Farm to Market, I think?) potato buns. The chicken itself is spiced perfectly. Nobody else in town was doing hot chicken as good as you can actually get in Kentucky or Tennessee until Lucky Boys opened their doors. If for nothing else, I would visit again just to have this beauty; however, the rest of the menu definitely sparked my interest. I've already had several other food-loving peeps tell me the catfish is to die for, and being from Minnesota, I'm intrigued by the poutine, as well (crazy hard to find in KC). It's also worth mentioning that the fries were bomb. It would be easy to have them just be meh as a side to the incredible sandwich, but I would have happily nommed on these by themselves. Service was surprisingly attentive, as well. Our bartender was quick, friendly, and knew his drinks and the menu like the back of his awesomely tattooed hand. You can bet I'll be back in the West Bottoms soon to sip on some Tallgrass/Boulevard, have another chicken sandwich, and bring some friends, so I can sample the rest of the menu. Walking in, it smells inviting, unlike some other older places that smell of stale beer and sweat. The bartenders are fun, inviting, and on top their game even when its super busy. You have to go to the bar to order, which is expected. Most people do that anyway. I had the veggie burger with fries. Im usually scared of veggie burgers because they are mostly dry, but the veggie burger here was the best I've ever had.
