Veggie Eggrolls- VEGAN! (2count for $4)
Christina W.

Came back for my birthday dinner! Had the Kao Poon with tofu. I was impressed! Menu stated that it was vegan based broth with spices and coconut milk. This soup had great depth and flavor. Also order some of the lotus cookies. Also! Vegan! Ordering was easy at front desk and received my order within 15 minutes. Enjoyed a great dinner with a good friend of mine. She ordered chicken laap. She loved it as well and said it was tasty. Every time I visit Lucky Lotus, it has been consistently delicious. They have never failed on the delicious factor. Service was excellent. My friend and I were the last ones in the shop and they were very gracious and kind that we were the last ones. We left before closing time. I would highly recommend Lucky Lotus to anyone looking for authentic Lao food in this area.

Vegan tofu khao poon

So good!! Tons of vegan options plus plenty of other choices, so there's really something for everyone. The aesthetic is super cute, and while it's usually pretty busy, the food still comes out fast and always tastes amazing. My go-to favorites are the veggie egg rolls, the khao poon with tofu, and the vegan pad Thai with tofu. They even have seitan, which I can't wait to try next time! Hands down the best Asian cuisine in the area. Do be mindful when choosing your spice levels a 2 seems like a 3 to me, and my family agreed. My only wish is that they had more locations and offered delivery or were on DoorDash. Definitely recommend!

Tom yum with tofu

I got the tom yum with tofu which is apparently a winter special (I thought I saw it on their normal menu before though?). The broth was very flavorful to me, though bordering on a little too salty. There is no spice option but I appreciated it came moderately spicy. I wish there were more veggies and tofu and less broth. I felt like the balance was off. Service was friendly and patient.

When I came here for the first time, I went to another dimension. I'm glad I live in the same time of history as the 5 Spice Special Bing Bing Wrap. The atmosphere takes you to Southeast Asia Aside from waiting a little longer for fresh food. Great service and experience. Easily earns my favorite restaurant in Des Moines.

Crispy rice wraps-crispy nam khao rice, lettuce, carrots, vermicelli noodles, fresh herbs wrapped in rice paper.

The ambiance when you walk in is enjoyable, the lighting and the music are perfect. There is a light up menu with pictures when you first walk in. You order at the counter, there is only milk, an old fashion soda, or other types of drinks. Now for the food the crab Rangoons are delicious, along with the crispy lettuce wraps, but spicy. I wish I could say the food was enjoyable but to be honest my lips were on fire! I'm pretty sensitive to spice so not my place, but may be yours. I ordered the zen noodle salad but again there was spicy stuff in it so I couldn't really enjoy it. The sauce that was served with it was also kinda spicy. The one thing I really enjoyed trying was the lemonade- it has a unique fruit I believe called Keule, so delicious! Bf ordered the pad Thai w chicken and he said it was very bland. I mean he had his plate swimming in sriracha but it didn't do anything for the dish. Be sure to mention whether you like spice or not before ordering as they are supposed to give you options but they didn't with us.

Drunken noodles with chicken

I came in for lunch and ordered the drunken noodles with chicken. The flavor was amazing, and the staff was very friendly. The restaurant was clean, and you could tell by the way the tables were cleared that cleanliness is important to them. It's a good thing I live across town- otherwise I'd forego maintaining a caloric or financial budget and be ther all the time!

Stopped by this incredible Southeast Asian eatery in Des Moines, IA on a road trip and it was literally and figuratively. What a gem! They had Western-friendly names for some menu items, but the dishes themselves were about as authentic as you can get. For those that are sensitive to heat/spicy, I'd suggest just going with a 1 (on that scale of 1-5) because even a 2 is plenty of heat, and I have a high tolerance for spicy. They don't mess around! Zen Noodle Salad is a Vietnamese vermicelli bowl with fish sauce, and it's served warm. I'm accustomed to the noodles being room temp, but other than that, everything else in this dish was spot on including the egg rolls. Sky's the Limit was a nice stir-fried noodle dish and the shrimp exuded lots of flavor along with the rice noodles. I love dishes like this, but just be careful about getting the spicy level down to something you can enjoy! This place was a real treat for my friends and me. Des Moines is lucky to have it.

Chicken pad thai

Pretty solid! Fun ambiance right down in a little business district which is kinda nice to walk around before or after. Staff was friendly and good was good. I got the chicken pad Thai and while it wasn't anything super standout it was fresh and I enjoyed it! Spice levels were good too, they can pack a punch!

Soy Sauce Street Noodles

I visited lucky lotus during a weekday lunch, but you would have thought it was the weekend- it was packed! I enjoyed the decorations throughout the store. Food is ordered at the front counter where they will give you a number to take to your table. Entrees took about 20 minutes to arrive. I enjoyed the soy sauce street noodles, which was their take on pad see ew. This is the best Thai food I've had in Des Moines.

The food was amazing- I had chicken pad Thai the serving size was huge!!!! You order at the bar. No table service! The ambiance was amazing.. 10/10 loved the decor. If im ever in Des Moines Iowa again I would love to come back!

We try one new restaurant each month just to keep things fresh, so this time I suggested Fawn's. I'm really glad we did. I had heard so many great things about the food so I was excited to try it. When I saw the menu, though, I was a little nervous because they serve Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Laotian food. In my experience, restaurants that try to serve all kinds of Asian food rarely do one or all of them well. I ordered Pad Thai and my husband got Evil Jungle Prince. I was very pleased. It was the best Pad Thai I've ever eaten. It was SO good! My husband loved his dish, too. It had chicken and vegetables with a spicy sauce made with red curry and coconut milk. The prices were very reasonable and the portions were huge. We each got two meals out of our dinners. I love it when that happens. The place isn't fancy. It's in a small strip mall and doesn't look like much from the outside. Inside it's very clean and well-kept. There's not much for ambience besides two flat screen TVs. It doesn't matter because it's the food that really stands out. The service was excellent, too. My husband had his iced tea refilled twice without even asking. Great affordable food and good service. What more can you ask for? If you love Asian food, give them a try. I can't wait to go back and try more of their dishes.

It wasn't my intent to review this visit to Rolling Wok. But things change... I just know I really like their food, I was hungry, and it was on the way. A perfect storm some would say! I first tried Rolling Wok during the pandemic and their ability to offer pick up via a drive up window on the North side of the building was a great fit for that season. The food and service has always been on point! I sure wish I made it over there more often than I do... Everything comes out of the kitchen hot, fresh, and the depth of flavor is always impressive. The business is in a strip so parking is easy. It's seat yourself. Seating is a small bar and low top tables and chairs. Standard table service for ordering and payment. Love the decor and vibe here. Modern but with a hint of traditional. The menu is front and back and varies from Thai and other regional dishes, including curries, to a few standard Chinese items. We ordered the following: 2x egg rolls 1x Drunken noodles lo mein style with chicken (4-vey hot) 1x Shrimp and beef fried rice (1-mild) 1x soda (Coke products) 1x unsweetened ice tea Abby was serving us last night and she did an amazing job. I'm assuming Abby as that was what the receipt said. Even though she's helped me before I'm not sure we've ever formally introduced ourselves. I need to be better about that... I do know she's the owner's sister. As far as I could tell they were probably a staff of two last night. She was working the front by herself and I'm sure there was at least one person in the kitchen cooking. The food was great as always! The drunken noodles lo mein style is a favorite of mine! A level 4 or 5 really brings the heat... But Abby is the star of the show! So patient and personable...! Couldn't ask for a more amazing host! If you haven't been... Rolling Wok is well worth you making the short trip out to Grimes. https://rollingwokgrimes.com/

I'm in town for business, but if I'm back again I would definitely try more of their dishes.

I knew we were in the right place when we walked I. And half of the restaurant were Vietnamese peeps. Was a warming experiencing hearing patrons throw a few traditional Lunar New Year greetings at each other and the owners. It's a small mom and pop shop, so much so, pop was the sole soldier working the entire front of the house. As such, don't expect super fast service, but good service nonetheless. We started with the fresh spring rolls, which were good, and their fried egg rolls, which I probably won't order again. The egg rolls were pretty much veggies, loosely filled, and served with a sweet and sour type dipping sauce. It was more of an Americanized Chinese style egg roll, not a Vietnamese cha gio with nouc cham. I ordered the pho dac biet and it was VERY good. The large is HUGE. Most places back home have suffered from shrink-flation and large bowls are tiny now. Not this place, I struggled to finish the bowl. My friends got the seafood pho, and another got the pho ga (chicken). I of course did not slide my chopsticks in theirs and swipe a bite, but they said they enjoyed theirs. I would definitely come back here again and maybe try some of their other dishes.
