You would think a supermarket is a supermarket but it's not. For some reason, just this particular location has lot of expired items. I feel as if they don't restock as often as they should. There has been multiple times that I've purchase something expired and had to come back to return it or exchange it. I've been shopping at this location for over 20 years. I have watched this store deteriorate from a pleasant place to shop to dirty restrooms, poorly stocked shelves, rude staffed nightmare of a store. Today was the straw that broke the camels back. I came here to buy a couple of blocks of cheese. When I got home, after opening a " sealed " package I discovered mold. Yes mold on a sealed package of cheddar cheese. I'm done with you guys. I don't want any more crappy produce, empty shelves and very few carts. You want a cart? Go find it. Safeway here I come!. I'll drive across town to do my shopping. Shame on you and your manager. I've been shopping at the Union City Lucky since moving here 20 years ago. Back then their original location was on Dyer and Alvarado Blvd., behind the Union 76 gas station. I know most of the clerks there and they know me by name or at least by sight, and I find them all friendly and courteous. I like to order the fresh-made sandwiches at the deli counter, but I try to get there before the lunch crowd, it can get very busy there. I have to say though, I miss the tables and chairs that used to be in the deli area so you could sit down and eat your lunch right there. About their 2 for 1 pricing: A checker told me that you actually have to buy both of something to get the deal. You can't just buy 1 and expect the discount, like at Safeway. Positive side: Pharmacy team is the best there is and They are so accommodating and know their customers and their medical providers literally. They need to be cloned and shared with other pharmacy locations. God bless them and hope they stay the same forever. The only negative side: The meat dept crew are fantastic as they always help but they always say that is all we have and it is true really, but whoever is in charge of what meat cuts are ordered and sold you suck big time. This one is located inside Union Landing opposite side of the Theatre near Jamba Juice & Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Just stopped on by yesterday because Lucky's was having a sale on Dreyer's Ice Cream. It's Buy 1 get 1 FREE! That means purchase 1 at regular price ($5.99) and get the second for FREE! Let me tell you there were sooo many different flavors to choose from, just took a while to finally pick 2. Selected Chocolate Chip and Napoleon (3 flavors). Plenty of shopping carts, although as we walked in there were no hand baskets by the entrance, which is typical of Lucky's. At the checkout, there were hand baskets and the end on the floor. Well theres your answer to where some handbaskets were...sigh customers. Just leave your items in the basket and then just put the basket on the checkout...that way the employees would return it so customers can see it and use them too...sheesh... I don't really know how to rate a chain grocery store. They tend to be all alike in my book, but I guess you could rate it with cleanliness and service. I was here last night and it was quiet and I was able to go in and out with the quickness! Self checkout has been a god send. I love how there's a Bank of America inside so I can get my money and get my groceries, though I don't do my grocery shopping here unless I'm too lazy to drive my butt over to Trader Joe's or Food Maxx...well also I live at home, so my mom does the shopping. I hate going here when it's Friday or Saturday night. It's just a headache trying to find parking. Just don't try getting a parking spot in front of the store and park in front of Krispy Kreme and walk over. Save some time. Remember...Three's a crowd! read more

I give this place a 3.5/5 I went here recently to get corn for my friend's Labor Day BBQ. Wow this place has definitely improved. It is very clean inside and all of the food looks fresh. Also they usually have good deals for food. I picked up 10 Corn on the Cob, (5 for $1) which honestly was a steal! I don't even have a Lucky's card and they still honored the deal which was great! I've been here on other occasions to buy snacks and alcohol. All which were very easy to find and their selection is very good. They have a good variety of liquors, beers, and wines which is a plus. Another cool thing is their flower room. They have an entire closed room dedicated to flowers which keeps the temperature just right so the flowers look as beautiful as possible. And you can walk inside instead of the refrigerators where you just open a glass door and grab a flower off a shelf. Lastly this place has a Bank of America on the inside which is good for me. So yesterday, there was an incident where I walked in the store with a paper bag that clearly says Vitamin Shop. I then put the bag on a shopping basket, and went straight to the produce section. When I couldn't find the brand that I wanted, I put the basket away, and tried to exit from the back where the produce section was at, in which it didn't open for some reason? I mean it used to open, but now.. I mean what's the point of having a exit door of it doesn't open? But anyways that's besides the point. Anyways since the exit door didn't open, I turn back and went towards the entrance where I enter, but right before I enter a clerk came literally running from behind me and snatch my paper bag, almost ripping it, completely caught me off gaurd. I then got out ragged and told the clerk that I got the bag from the Vitamin Shop and the items that I have are only items thar the Vitamin Shop carried. He then took my 60 dollars worth of items inside my bag to a different clerk who I'm assumed that she's either the assistant or store manager. I then told them both that their store don't even carry those items that I have in the bag, and if they don't believe me, they can check my receipt, it clearly says that I got the items from the Vitamin Shop that day and that time, but instead of checking the receipt, they said that I was being suspicious for trying to exit from the back(because it was close to the produce) and just let me go without apologizing for the misunderstanding and decided to let the cops and security handle me for nothing. Afterwards two cop cars stalk me, surprise they didn't stop me, but instead security stopped me and ask me what's in the bag, I was like "really?.." I showed him and told him the exact same thing as I told the two clerks, that I got the items from the Vitamin Shop. He then apologize for them suspecting me of shop lifting. In conclusion, I was dissapointed, especially that clerk who almost rip my bag, which I find a very unprofessional and unnecessary thing to do. He could of simply just ask me to "stop!"and said "what's in the bag?" but nothing. Located in Union Landing; where kids are parking lot racing, a few spot to park as long as it's not a peak movie time. This is a pretty clean lucky the person who keeps it clean is doing a good job. It's a large food store; the deals are not even that great even with there lucky deals or whatever they are. This was on my home and I was like might as well. Well never again for sure. They close the self check out line at 8 PM on Sunday? What??? I was lucky enough to get one of the rude clerks I have ever seen in my life. I think here name was something with M; she had on a ton of makeup and a terrible attitude. I didn't even get a "Hello" "how are you; just started checking my things. That's fine I don't need to chit chat but was got me going was . I tell her I have my own bag and I can bag things myself. I didn't say this rude; I was just being me. There is a much older man who is bagging; I am more the capable of bagging my own items. So I do so. She gets the last few items avoids letting me bag them hands them to the bag guy She said make sure you put them in his bag. The guy is looking at her like what are you doing; so he hands them to me. This is the second time that I come to the deli in the last two weeks and the same person has to take care of all the counters Deli, bakery and so on. How is i possible that when people get out of work have to wait 15-20 mins to get some ham? And the customer ordering a custom cake has to hurry up so the customers from the different counters get the help they deserve. THAT IS NOTTTT DECENT CUSTOMER SERVICE !!! This was my first time at luckys and my first time buying baby food with WIC. Usually cashiers get annoyed when I mention I'm using WIC and I was already confused as I have never used it to buy baby food before. But Cassandra and Suzy we're amazing to say the least! ! Seemed like the computer had issues with the copious amount of baby food I purchased and wasn't applying WIC to the other food items. Cassandra went line by line with me through my WIC purchases and what was allowed to figure out the 23$ discrepancy and went line by line on the cashier to void what wasn't being rung up as WIC even tho it was WIC. Suzy also was running back and forth to exchange items that weren't ringing up as wic even though the wic app said they were approved. I had ALOT, I'm talking 100 cans of baby food, rice cereal, milk, eggs etc! She remained calm and had such a positive attitude during the whole process. Which was a long process! And voided the whole transaction and rang up everything again in smaller batches and it worked out perfectly! The whole transaction with took about an hour Susie(Suzy) and Cassandra remained calm, cool and collected! They were actually in great spirits and made me feel less bad then I was already feeling. I felt horrible and it was so stressful ! I was taking too long, and WIC wasn't working out and I knew lines were forming (but they opened more registers right away) and was feeling very bad! Suzy and Cassandra were so nice and kept reassuring me that it was fine and no ones fault and that they were there for customers and were happy to figure things out. And kept the situation light and kept joking around with me which relieved stress ! I will definitely be back and luckys will be my supermarket of choice due to Cassandra and suzys excellent customer service ! If I could recommend them for a raise and employees of the month I would! Tried to buy a mini rose "as advertised" for $5.99 but the problem was, they were all wilted. Saw the exact same plant, same brand sold as 2 in a pack with a thanksgiving motif( this was a Monday after thanksgiving) but they wouldn't let me have one. Why would I buy a dead plant for $5.99? This store is terrible. The produce has been bad the 3 times I've tried to shop produce there. I don't know where they hide the shopping carts, it's almost as if they only have 5 and those are reserved by frequent shoppers or something. I recently moved to uc and it's sad that I have to shop at a luckys in Fremont or Newark for decent produce. Sure the staff is nice, but I'm not looking for friends when I go to the grocery store. I've only shopped this location maybe 4 or 5 times- I keep forgetting I literally can't shop there. I went foe donuts early one morning - something I used to do at the San Ramon store, the gentleman in the bakery section offered me day old donuts because they didn't have any ready.?! It was like 6:30- they should have been stocked before the doors even opened. The first time I went for peppers and onions, I had to request fresh peppers because the ones on the floor all had visible fuzzy mold. The onions had actually sprouted. I settled for onion powder, the woman in produce did bring out a box of fresh peppers that she said had come in "yesterday". I don't know if they just don't care or don't have a produce manager or what- the simplest of minds can tell when something is no good! If it's a matter of not having enough patrons shopping produce at that location, reduce the size and amount of goods in the produce section. The store is not well laid out anyway. It has to be one of the last locations to consider updates because I haven't seen a luckys that's this outdated anywhere else. Even the doors are old. And they don't even allow the use of one set of doors on the left end, they're just for decoration I guess. Long story short, this location needs a makeover and they need to make this location a priority in the area. I'd argue, It's the worst. I don't know what luckys pays their employees, you do get what you pay for, I'm assuming it's not much based on the looks of things. Get it together UC Luckys, this is terrible. read more

I am furious right now. My husband purchased the Disney Princess 1/2 sheet cake of white cake with white buttercream icing on Saturday, May 14 for our daughter's 5th birthday. Imagine my surprise when we discover as we slice the cake that the two cake layers have NOTHING in between the layers. No icing or filling at all to bind the layers together, so the individual slices immediately collapse/fall over as I attempt to serve our guests. I go into the store today, Monday, May 16, and alerted the manager to the problem. The front cashier (who said she was a manager) called over Jessica, presumably the Bakery manager. Jessica proceeded to inform me that the "cheap cakes don't get any icing or filling. We just stack them and ice the outside. Only the cakes with roses get the split and fill." I stared at her with incredulity that a $40 cake is considered cheap and undeserving of a layer of icing so the 2 cake layers wouldn't fall upon service. This is truly ridiculous. I have NEVER had a cake that had no icing/filling between the layers, especially one that costs $40. How much does buttercream cost anyway? I mentioned the problem today to Lucky's management expecting an apology and an attempt to ensure this doesn't happen to some other family celebrating a special event. Instead, I'm offered a lame explanation that my $40 cake was too cheap to deserve icing inside to hold the layers together. I feel insulted and can't believe this is standard policy, per Jessica. Alright, I have looked for this Lucky on multiple occasions and have left frustrated and ready to scream. Why? Exiting on Whipple Road/Dryer Road off of 680 there is a HUGE sign which advertises Lucky. "Great", I think, it's in the shopping complex. Do you realize how massive this complex is? What they don't tell you is that the Lucky is nowhere near the sign. It is about half a mile away, at the far end of the whole shopping complex, facing the road and not seen when driving around the complex. ANNOYING! So I finally found the Lucky. OK. You figure a Lucky is a Lucky is a Lucky and not worthy of a review. Normally I would agree but read on -- I grab a cart and start walking around the store. Although the store is large, it does not seem much different then other Lucky Supermarkets I've shopped. Then I found a small ethnic food section. It looked promising. Not only were there the normal Mexican and Chinese food items you would find in an "ethnic" food section at a chain supermarket but so much more. There was proper Nescafe from Europe. Chocolate HobNobs from England. A large variety of Asian food I couldn't read but looked good from the pictures. There were dozens of Indian sauce mixes. English tea. Indian Tea. Turkish coffee. Really, I could not believe it. The selection was minimal but covered all the basics (and my favorite Chocolate HobNobs!!) I continued through the aisles and found something which made me phone my mother in the MidWest -- Kluski Egg Noodles. I know it means absolutely nothing to you but this little package of noodles is like the holy grail of Polish cooking in my family. They are only available in a very small region around Chicago. I bought what they had and the rest of the ingredients to make my grandmother's noodle recipe and left giddy. This Lucky has the makings of any normal supermarket. However, if it's late at night and you need an ingredient for that special dish, give this Lucky a try, they might have it. Now, I'm off to make my Polish noodles...yum!! read more

In general I don't do reviews of places like McDonald's, Domino's Round Table Pizza, Macy's, Safeway, etc because if you've been to one, you've been to them all. So why am I doing a review of Lucky's? Because there are times when there are certain things the public should be informed about and this is one of those instances. In general this like most Lucky's except much bigger. Probably twice the size of most Luckys which includes a big ethnic food section, one of the larger frozen food spaces, and a pretty big drug store area. This Lucky's is usual kept clean and in general the people here are friendly and helpful. So, why the review? Simple, ever since this store changed ownership from Albertson's to SaveMart and Savemart converted this store to "Lucky's", I noticed that unless you watch carefully, they overcharge you especially on sale items. If it was once or twice, I might have let it go, but after the 3rd time, it seems more like store policy. The last time I was here, I got in an argument with the checker that 2 for $4 means I can buy 1 for $2. I've done it long enough to and at this store (hell there was another item I bought just 1 of and didn't pay full price but the discount price) to know that it works like that. Also noticed they overcharged on a different item that was suppose to be 3 for $5 and charged me $6. It's getting to the point where I just don't trust their advertised prices any more. If they get back to charging the correct advertised prices, I'll be more than happy to give them a positive review, but for now for overcharging, 1 Star and will try to avoid as much as possible. read more

Lucky's had a sale on Crystal Geyser water over the Memorial day weekend and I sent my hubby with instructions to bring 30 cases of water. He came home with only 10 and I was very mad at him, however, he explained that they told him he could only buy 10. I looked at the newspaper ad and it didn't say anywhere on there that there was a limit. I asked him if he asked to speak to a manager and he said that the manager told him that he could only get 10 because he didn't want his other customers to come in to buy water and there wasn't any because he bought it all. I'm sure Lucky's headquarters don't care if the money they get is from ONE customer or 10 customers as long as they're getting their money, right? Greg told my husband if he wanted to come back after 5pm which is when he was off and buy more water that he could, but he would not allow him to buy anymore water under "his watch". OMG ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?! My husband is such a pushover I swear...so he left. I called Lucky's and asked to speak to the store manager. A person named Greg came on the line and he said he was the assistant manager and he was the one that told my husband about the idiotic "rule". I asked him where did it say on the advertisement or online that there was a limit? he said that he makes his own rules for HIS store. Oh really? I'm sure Headquarters will loooooooove to hear about this. He quickly said that it would be ok for my husband to come get more cases of water on Friday (I was talking to him on Monday) because that's when he would get another shipment. I had a party that Saturday and was very upset that this assistant manager thought he could make his own little rules for his store, ha! He offered to give us the same price on Friday even though the sale ended that Monday. I told him fine, I needed 30 cases and on Friday hubby would go pay for them. When my husband went on Friday to buy the water, Greg had only loaded 20 cases in a cart for my husband and gave him the sale price. WTF happened to the 30 cases we had agreed on? Hubby had our 2 year old with him and I was at work and he didn't want to deal with the headache of going back and getting the additional 10 cases. WORST STORE AND MANAGEMENT EVER. read more

The cashier that resembles Aunt Jemima with the orange nails is super rude. Instead of taking one last customer she refused service after my items were already on the belt. She said she was closed but her light was still on and waved her hand in my face telling me to remove my items and proceed to number 4 (no cashier available) or number 5 that was still open but also the only lane open. Now as good customer service her response should have been "thank you if you don't mind would you please put the chain up as you are my last customer I'll take you, thank you". She is disrespectful as to say we had an attitude... of course I had an attitude you put your hand in my face and refused us as paying customers! I've lived here for 40 plus years probably before this rude woman was born and to have this kind of customer service is uncalled for. She should not work the register if she does not have the proper and appropriate training that most of Lucky's cashiers have. This is the place where I pick up some wine, ice cream, cookie dough, etc after work and head home to watch some netflix like a normal 20-something-year-old female and they help me get in and out fast without questioning my plethora of calorie choices. A clean grocery store with ample parking spaces. Plus the clerks are courteous. I find everything fast. I have been there, i have never had to wait long. This Lucky is your average Albertson's turned Lucky supermarket. There is absolutely nothing different from the changeover whatsoever, which is sad because I grew up next to an awesome Lucky in SF and have very fond memories of the store. I only go here if I have to buy non-produce and meat items and/or when I've forgotten some ingredient for whatever I'm cooking for dinner. So many reasons why this location only gets two stars... the fruits and veggies are only so-so... the meat and seafood section is even worse... the bakery/deli is meh... the parking lot is a dirty mess after a long weekend after everyone stops by to buy alcohol for whatever party they're going to... and my biggest pet peeve about this spot: I always, always, always have to ask someone to help me at self-check out when I bring my own reusable bags because the register won't let me checkout with my own bags without someone "authorizing" it first. The best part about this place is the customer service. Every one is always nice and helpful. I feel bad that they have to work in such a dreary place. This store we shop at every week for groceries. I like this place because there's always short lines, and easy parking close to the store even when the shopping plaza is busy. They always have solid veggies/fruits in the produce department as well. Food Maxx or Food Source in Hayward is cheaper, but you also see robberies and shootings at those places at night so I avoid going there. read more

I hate this Lucky! Workers are rude! They definitely need more training! This location doesn't have too many customers probably because they don't know how to treat their customers. Will stop shopping here! Wish I can give a zero star! read more
