Go here often for breakfast on Sunday. Usually the line is out the door so expect a wait. The good thing: they have self serve coffee at the bar and will even poor you another drink while you wait. However, it's just your standard coffee. No special favors. The staff is super friendly and fast. The so so thing: the breakfast here is consistently average. Biscuits are not light and fluffy but they are OK. They cook the bacon way in advance so it is usually cold or luke warm. Lunches tend to be better quality for some reason. The bad thing: 1) parking sucks! 2) they have a very odd logic of seating first come first serve so you will often see 2 people sitting in the booths for 6 when the place is slammed. I've been living in the neighborhood for over seven years, and have been visiting Lucky's consistently since I moved there. It is my absolute favorite place for any meal, any time. The food is terrific. It's hearty, fresh, and well-prepared. I've had just about everything on the the menu. The Hawaiian Chicken Kabob is my favorite; grilled chicken breast with grilled mixed veggies (the exact mix can change, as can the level of char depending on who is on the grill), grilled pineapple, all on a bed of dirty rice. And it includes soup or salad, all for $9.99. Other standouts include: catfish (as good as Hook, Line, and Sinker on Lemmon); the Bulls-Eye Burger; the chicken fried steak and chicken; and just about all the breakfasts. The coffee is damn good, too. I really don't get the naysayers regarding this place. I've never had a bad meal, and the service is top-rate. They know the regulars and remember what you drink, and your usual food choices. What more could you want? GO! read more

Lucky's was so good I wish I actually lived in Dallas so I could be a frequent diner. After a long night of drinking their hearty food and spicy Bloody Mary fixed me right up. I had the meatloaf and my girlfriend had the chicken fried steak. Both were delicious. Our waitress is really what made our experience five stars worthy. Used to be a good option. Parking - total nightmare. Food - average at best. Service - if they are busy, forget it they rush around slinging plates like you're "lucky" they are willing to serve you. The WORST option is to try and order through ANY delivery service. Tonight Amazon delivery was cancelled because the restaurant didn't accept the order but they were quick to blame Amazon. However, when the formula for success already establishes, and creates, pure and unadulterated happiness, years of satisfied customers, and superior food, no change is ever needed. Ever. I love Chicken Fried Steak. While I do not partake in it often, when I do, it is a treat, and when I go somewhere for it, it is something I have looked forward to, fervently. Lucky's Cafe had the BEST Chicken Fried Steak, and for years, their praises were sung to my friends, about how wonderful everything was: The breading, the size of the steak itself, the crispiness, the seasoning, the sides being enjoyable, consistent, and making the entire package something to behold, and then, the true tip of the iceberg, the fantastic rolls and cornbread that adjoined the dinner itself! The cornbread, always sweet and tasting somewhat like a sweet cake itself, along with the rolls, which were always light and fluffy. LOVED IT! My fave!!! I have not been able to make it to Lucky's Cafe in quite some time, due to my location. Walking into the establishment on the beautiful Sunday, I noticed a chalkboard outside with something about now being " Farm to Table ", something or other? " Ok? " I quickly went into the establishment to have my favorite Chicken Fried Steak. When handed the menu, I noticed that this was not what I was used to. First thought was, " Where did all of the menu items go? " Gone was the previous menu, full of so many items, popular dishes, specials, etc.. The menu has literally been whittled down to a sheer shadow of itself, in its' previous life. Thankfully, my favorite Chicken Fried Steak was still on the menu, yet now, two dollars more. " Farm To Table " represented itself, loud and proud, everywhere. The unsettling feeling and fear, that started to creep into my conscious mind, about seeing all of this change, would then result in the question of whether or not, my favorite dish here, had also become a sheer shadow of itself, ​like the menu, and the fear of recipe changes, became a morbid reality. Gone was the HUGE piece of steak I had been so accustomed to receive, in the past. Instead, a piece of meat half the size sat looking at me, introducing itself as the new guy on the block. The breading, although it appeared to be something that would be favorful AND flavorful, was bland and void of any taste. The fries appeared to be the same, and my sauteed spinach, turned out to be the best thing about my meal. Bright, vividly green, and bursting with freshness and full flavor, the spinach was amazing! Also, the waiter was perfect in his service as well! The beautiful rolls and cornbread that I had so much loved in the past, and which had made my meal so complete, delicious, flavorful, and memorable, were now replaced also by a substandard, flavorless, bland, and insulting, recipe. Was my meal horrible? In and of itself, no. Were these new recipes, that boasted " Farm to Table ", able to keep the same flavors, size of meal, value, and broad spectrum of taste, aboard, compared to the previous recipes from years before? Absolutely, one hundred percent, NO! Not at all! Lucky's Cafe...You took years and years of pleasurable food and a remarkable menu, which so many customers, who BUILT your business, to the level that it is/was, and for reasons unknown, completely diluting and turning your back on all things prior, to then bring this " Farm To Table " idea to completely cover your business. WHY? Let me be positive about something: This " Farm To Table " idea IS a great idea! Why wouldn't it be? I think it brings a new idea to items, and can be something good. However, and let this be a suggestive question: Lucky's, why didn't you simply ADD a section, or make a separate menu, for this " Farm To Table " idea, that you brought to your establishment, to be an addition to your incredible menu, instead of entirely replacing your past amazing menu, that years and years of satisfied customers helped create your establishment to the favorite place that it was, to a menu half the size, with prices raised, and flavors taken away? Financially, you could have had the best of both worlds: Retaining existing customers that did not have their menu favorites and flavors taken away, AND creating new and additional customers, who would have favored this " Farm To Table " idea/menu. Your business would have been better than ever!! Everyone would have been a winner! Lucky's Cafe, I wish you well, but I cannot in good conscious support your establishment any longer. I cannot pay more money for a dish whose recipe has completely changed into something so bland, with less actual food in my dish received, compared to the perfection it was before. Another amazing gem we stumbled upon in our neighborhood. My husband and I went here after a doctor's appointment during a Thursday lunch rush. It was a good reward for getting our blood drawn. We both got the lunch special - which was a great deal. $9 for an entree and 2 sides. The meatloaf was a bit underwhelming, but the creamed corn and potato soup were perfection. The service was top notch. The hostess noticed I was blowing my nose and brought me a box of tissues from the back and our waiter was personable and sweet. Lucky's has long been a staple in the Oak Lawn neighborhood. Serving comfort food like grilled cheese and chicken fried steak it has always been one of my favorites but now they have changed the menu and though at first I was disappointed, now I have embraced it. Specialties like chicken fried steak remain but with a great innovation and the sides! Roaster broccoli and roast Brussels sprouts are tasty and locally sourced. The corn muffins are almost a confection and the daily specials are well worth consideration. Lucky's has a new a vibrant life! read more

The food at Lucky's Cafe is always delicious, but the reason I keep going back is the service. They are friendly and thoughtful, and it does not matter if you are a first time customer or a regular. The restaurant epitomizes the term "kid-friendly," not like a kid's themed restaurant where the food is the lowest common denominator, but rather by treating each child as a paying customer and being welcoming of families. It is such a relief to go into a restaurant and not feel that having a child is a burden to the restaurant. 4 stars for the food, 5 for the service, so rounding up to 5 stars. read more

This place used to be really good, but not now. We ordered chicken fingers and they had so much residual flour on them that my tongue felt like it was wearing a sweater. There was almost no seasoning on the chicken. The green beans had a plastic taste. Onion rings were good but so crunchy that I think I lost a thin layer of skin on on the inside of my mouth. We came in very hungry the please was not busy at all or was after brunch on Easter Sunday. It took a while for us to be waited. When we finally did get our orders taken the waiter never brought the lemons lemons or the mimosa. It took awhile for the food to come out. Seems like they may have been short staffed. Waiting right now for the waiter to come back to the table so we can get to go boxes and the check. The food was good, but the service was bad. My dog knows how to have a good time. Mandy drinks heartily from the cup of life, and I love her for it. On her walk this morning, she not only stopped to smell the roses, but she did the same for some begonias and peonies too, as well as a couple of bushes, a chick-fil-a wrapper and another dog's rear end. She was one happy girl when we returned home just in time for me to gather my things and my hubby for breakfast at Lucky's. I had Mandy on the brain as we sat down with menus and I realized that Lucky's isn't a full-menu-all-day kinda place. I guess I'd thought it was, based on my previous visits. I don't know why. Turns out, breakfast is breakfast here, and the menu offered traditional fare with nary a club sandwich in sight (my fallback at IHOP and similar places, as I have so many issues with breakfast food). Staring back at me were sausage (the horror!), pancakes (the sugar!) and eggs (don't get me started). I was frozen with self-induced food phobic paralysis. Just as I was about to order the oatmeal, I thought to myself: What would Mandy do? I ordered the breakfast tacos, and immediately felt a tremendous weight lift from my overburdened shoulders. Within moments I was presented with a platter of perfectly scrambled eggs studded with nuggets of sausage and fresh veggies, topped with two melting puddles of cheese. Alongside were silky refrieds and some damn good spice-speckled homefries. Warm tortillas accompanied, and I quickly assembled a taco with a little bit of everything. Epiphany! Every bite was wonderful, and the plate could have easily served two. If I were so inclined, I could have carried home the leftovers...but I decided to leave my experience perfectly perfect as it was. Hubby loved his pancakes and sausage, and the service at Lucky's was, as always, superb. Now I see why everyone raves about the comfort food here...I'll be coming back for more sinfully delicious fare in the near future. And that weight that was lifted from my shoulders? A few more meals like this one, and it'll settle itself back down again around my midsection. read more

We were SOOOOOOOO disappointed with the changes . I'll just start by saying we've been loyal Lucky's fans/customers for over a decade, and we don't even live in Dallas. We live 4 hours away, but come to Dallas at least once a month for my daughters hospital visits, down the road at Scottish Rite. One thing we always look forward to is a nice relaxing meal of fresh veggies and down home cookin'. Whether it's to wait out traffic and fill our bellies before the long ride home, or to sit and enjoy a meal while we ponder the news of yet another surgery, or to pick up some homey to-go sustenance while waiting for my daughter to recover and leave the hospital, Lucky's has always been there with their friendly servers and yummy food. We stopped by Monday, after an afternoon appointment and got the new menu. Both the kids had decided they wanted catfish before we got there (because we have the menu memorized!), but it had been taken off the menu. They had cod instead. It was ok. I got up from my booth seat to check out all the yummy veggie offerings on the blackboard, (although, I always get the steamed carrots and spinach casserole) and there were no veggies. Just a bunch of info about where they get their local chicken, honey and goat cheese. Also, no biscuits and cornbread that usually comes out before the meal. I asked about the biscuits and the server said she would bring us some, but they keep them in the back now. She brought some. They were NOT the same cinnamon biscuits which, by the way, were probably the main reason they have a bottle of honey sitting on each table. I picked mashed potatoes and green beans to go with my chicken strips. Chicken strips were still huge and hand cut, green beens were bland and overcooked, but potatoes were good. My son got "roasted" broccoli with his cod, but it was more like burnt. The big potato curl things were good, but no matter how many types of starches you offer, it doesn't make up for losing all the fresh non-starch veggie options. The spinach casserole they used to offer was the only cooked spinach I enjoyed in the whole universe, and they didn't drown their carrots in oil or sugar like so many places do. I hope the corporate offices get the message from Lucky's regular customers soon, because I really want to go back. Otherwise, we'll miss you guys! I guess ten years (that we've been going) is a good run for a restaurant. If you don't see your little blond one-legged customer and her family much, it's cause we're just gonna eat at the hospital.Maybe we'll come in and say hi! and have a piece of cake. This is def my favorite brekfast spot in D. The waiter are always flamboyant and the food is always top notch! Theres usually a 10-20 min wait on the weekends, but worth it. Make sure when you order you ask for a basket of biscuits for the table. They usually dont charge for them and they are baked fresh all day so they are flaky and yum yum! I always crumble and ruin my week by ordering the I-45 Extravaganza! And it is what it is. Chicken fried steak smothered in gravy, eggs cooked any style, and homestyle potatoes. simple but delicious. I always want to order lunch but always break down and get brekfast cause its so damn good! AAaallright Lucky's....you swoon me with a large excited crowd waiting for their table......a charming & funny host that makes even the newbies feel like regulars....and menu items that spark the salivary glands. But dude....you have yet to truly deliver what your appearance falsely advertises.....awesomeness. Last time I was here, I was temporarily blinded by all the fuss and fun that is your establishment and staff.....even though our waiter was a bit of a toot. But to think back, the food was mediocre at best. And this time was even worse. This time, Lance and I asked if by chance we could order the meatloaf sandwich, even though it says not available at brunch, we took a shot...and whadaya know!!! They had the meatloaf ready so we were able to partake. Our excitement was overwhelming....Meatloaf sandwich!!!! It was hard holding back the druel......our waiter this time was beyond great, even brought us a paper when we didnt ask for it. Lance got a side salad to start.....good stuff I'll admit, and they have the GOOD Ranch (you ALL know what I'm talking about!)...I ordered a side of sliced tomatoes. It came with a strawberry vinaigrette that was delicious, but I ended up swiping the rest of Lance's Ranch. People, I don't know if they use crack as fertilizer to grow those tomatoes, but they were the most amazing tasting 'maters I've ever had in my life.....I had inhaled them in less than a minute. So now, emotions ran high waiting for the headliner to this feast. Meatloaf Sandwich. It came. Our hearts sank immediately. The meatloaf was a slice about a half an inch thick, and looked like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for hours. Barely covered the bun. No sauce on it or anything. Fries, as I mentioned in my last review, we still a waste of calorie space. I've never been more disappointed in my life....seriously...it was like "Is this a joke?".
