I've had Luella's Southern Kitchen on my list for a while, and my friend and I finally made it in. They did not disappoint. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It gives you a family dining room vibe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They were out of pancakes, but we tried the Nashville Hot Chicken and Waffles, strawberry cream French toast, biscuits and gravy, beignets, and a brisket egg pie. The chicken was cooked to perfection, and everything tasted fresh and made to order. The biscuits and gravy had a lot going on flavor wise, and I did not try them with the pimento cheese, but everything else was a hit. The only area for improvement I noticed was during table cleaning. Staff were spraying cleaning chemicals near customers' food, and food was brought to the table immediately after handling the cleaning products. A little more attention to food safety practices would go a long way. Overall, the food was delicious, service was friendly, and I would definitely come back, especially to try those pancakes next time.
I was very excited to try this place and while it wasn't a bad experience, I don't think I'll be back any time soon. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The way their restaurant is set up is unique. You have to wait to be seated, but you have to go up to their register to order.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Not terrible, but it is like half of the experience of going to a sit down restaurant. We ordered our food but it took over an hour to come out. My mom got the chicken and waffles, and I have to say, their chicken is AMAZING. Best thing on their menu hands down. Unfortunately, they ran out of it for my other friend to order. I got the pancakes and bacon. I didn't care for the pancakes, truthfully, but my sister-in-law really liked them! All comes down to personal taste. I think their food is great but service definitely left something to be desired. Takes a while to even get water. Overall, with a few tweaks, I think this place could be great because the foundation is there.
This is a place where you order in front and sit down and wait to get your food. I felt a little rushed to make a choice due to other customers and decided on the breakfast sandwich. My brother got the shrimp and grits. I will say it felt like the service was a bit slow and we waited a bit for our food and even our drinks. Some people around us ordered the chicken and waffles which looked so good, it kind of overpowered what I was actually eating. It wasn't until I got home and ate my leftovers that I realized the breakfast sandwich was delicious. The egg was fluffy and the jam was yummy! My brother also enjoyed his food. We shared a side of Mac and cheese which I also thought was good. I would definitely return to try other things.
They close at 2pm, and we came around 12:45 on a Saturday. The host said it would be a 45 minute wait, but it only ended up being about a 15 minute wait. You order at the counter with the host, pick a table, and then they bring your food to you. We ordered the Nashville hot chicken and waffles, biscuits with jam, mac and cheese, bacon, and hash brown. I loved everything. The biscuits were so soft, the hashbrown was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, the mac and cheese was delicious, and the fried chicken was perfectly spiced and crispy. I was starting to get full but wanted to keep eating because it was so good. A minor complaint is that they forgot to give us silverware before bringing us our food. It also seemed like the servers weren't really paying attention to when the food was ready at the counter to bring to the tables, and at one point the kitchen staff even yelled at a server for not paying attention. It seemed like they were prioritizing cleaning up the restaurant before closing, even though people were still waiting on their food.
[[HIGHLIGHT]]This place is small and quaint with so much charm.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I absolutely loved walking in and hearing old-school music playing on a record player -- it felt like my daddy's music and instantly gave me a wave of nostalgia.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was great. Our waiter was friendly, attentive, and more than happy to answer any questions we had about the menu. And the food? EVERYTHING we ordered was amazing. The pancakes were fluffy with just the right amount of crisp around the edges. The chicken and waffles were perfectly crunchy and packed with flavor. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Such a cozy spot with great vibes and even better food.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'll definitely be back!

The food came out quickly but fresh! I was blown away at the size and taste of the pancakes I would order again and again! The Mac was made to perfection, the bacon was caramelized and the hashbrowns were different, I think they were deep fried? Everything was a 10/10!!
If you're visiting Chicago, Luella's should be your first stop. And if you're from Chicago and haven't been here yet, make sure you stop by! When I tell you, this is some of the best food I had in Chicago--I mean it! My friend and I got seated very quickly. We ordered the buttermilk biscuit with the homemade jam, hash browns, chicken and waffles, and beignets. The biscuit was sooo buttery, the egg and sausage were perfectly cooked and seasoned, AND THE JAAAM omg that sweetness tied it all together. Most US restaurants purchase prepackaged hash browns from Sysco. Not here. Nope, these hash browns were clearly fresh. It was simple (salt, pepper, rosemary), I'd recommend some hot sauce with them. For the chicken and waffles, I got the chicken "Nashville style" (spicy) and oh my goddd best decision. It had such a good crunch and depth of flavor. The chicken was cooked PERFECTLY (cooked all the way through and not dry at all)! I also appreciated that they didn't skimp on the maple syrup. This was my first time having beignets and let me tell you it was heavenly. My friend said it was the best she'd ever had. All the food came out piping hot, was portioned generously, and worth the cost. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We sat outside in their patio area behind the restaurant. It's a quaint and has lots of seating. There are some tables in the shade, but not most.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I enjoyed the INCREDIBLE food, kind hospitality, quick service, and mellow atmosphere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I will absolutely be back!
This is my first time trying southern food and 10/10 experience!!!! This place was packed when we came so the food came out a bit slow, and I felt so bad for the workers... they kept checking in on us and apologizing for the long wait time. The wait time was so worth it! My favorite was the biscuit and gravy and I will be thinking about it for a while
Excited to try Luella's! About time since they've been in the neighborhood. Crab-stuffed shrimp and grits are fine, a little gritty but what do I expect lol. The collared greens have some meat on it so it's not vegetarian in case people are curious. The beignets were different than what I expected them to be: larger, more doughy, seems that there is cornmeal in it and maybe coconut? Not sure. All of them are still delicious. Compostible box packaging except for the collared greens. Prices in Yelp are outdated.
One last meal at Luella's before they move locations! You can never go wrong with their buttermilk fried chicken, which includes half a full chicken and collard greens. I always treat myself to a skillet cornbread and it is totally worth the wait! Quick and easy to order. You can find seating when it's not peak hours, but still very busy until the end.
This menu is simple! The space is simple! The FOOD is unforgettable! The FOOD is outstanding! It's packed with flavor! It's fresh and more than enough! I had plenty of leftovers! We tried the shrimp & grits, that shrimp was juicy and tasty! The chicken and waffles, delicious and packed with flavor! The French Toast was raspberry and amazing, soft and fluffy with crispy edges. Service, you order up front, then go find a seat and wait for your food to be served. Owner came out and spoke with a few guest, including us, he was nice and friendly. Other staff were attentive and friendly as well. We will be back! It's small and was packed quickly after opening.
Wow this place SLAPS. The best recovery brunch of my life, the chicken and waffles (both Nashville and original flavors) are crispy, moist and delicious. Really nicely paired with the waffles. Good beignets but not my fave in the city (a lil more dense than my preference). Pretty good cream cheese grits (but I think I'm a cheddar girl). Amazing service, they made room for us so we didn't have to wait 1 hour. Perfect New Years Day brunch to kick off the year. So this was my first time trying Luella southern kitchen and I must say I enjoyed my experience. A friend and I decided to meet up for lunch after work and I ordered the chicken and waffles with mac & cheese and she got shrimp and grits with collard greens. I will say I wasn't the biggest fan of the waffle. I prefer a lighter waffle, and this one was a bit dense. The chicken was pretty tasty. It was very crispy which I don't mind. And well flavored. The mac & cheese was also pretty good but as a southerner (Alabama born) my standards are a little bit higher for mac & cheese. But I wasn't disappointed in the experience. My friend said her shrimp and grits were really tasty and they were very plentiful with the portion of seafood included. The grits were extremely creamy and very flavorful and it gave her a New Orleans vibe. She also really enjoyed her collard greens. Overall, the service was really good. You do have to order immediately upon entering and then finding a seat, but our staff was really pleasant and have beautiful smiles. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I loved the oldies that were playing on the record player. I thought that just gave it a beautiful vibe and nice environment.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I would definitely recommend having a nice Saturday or Sunday brunch here.

Luella's is a very quaint establishment on the far north side of Chicago. They have about 8 four seat tables and 1 long bench table that sits about 10 people. I was a bit confused on how seating works as I wasn't greeted upon entry and the young lady at the register was on the phone with a customer and unable to assist immediately. When she was done with the call, she told us we could sit anywhere and to use the QR code on the table to place our order. I ordered the Nashville hot chicken and waffles and the beignets. My friend ordered the regular chicken and waffles and a side of eggs with cheese. My food came out nice and hot, but was bit too salty for my liking. I used some of my friends syrup to offset it. I was able to eat most of it but I didn't truly enjoy it. I had some of my friend's meal and hers was perfect. The beignets were absolutely delicious! I could've licked the plate! I'd go back just to have those for sure!! All in all I'd visit again. I want to try the shrimp and grits without the bacon and I'll definitely choose the regular chicken and waffles over the Nashville and ask for some hot sauce to get the heat. read more

First off, I have been wanting to go here for the longest time and it did NOT disappointed me! It's a nice quaint little restaurant that feels welcoming, nice coast blue walls with wooded panelings , paired with the juke joint pictures really gives this place a southern feel and the host/cashier was amazing. Great customer service with a smile! Now on to the menu, it's short, sweet and straight to the point which is great because the staff can focus on large array of food. I had the special of the week which was the smothered chicken gizzards with dirty rice and roasted carrots and it was amazing! The gizzards were so tender and flavorful with smoked gravy and dirty rice which was great and the roasted carrots were cooked to perfection! My partner had the Nashville hot chicken and waffle and it was some of the best chicken he's ever had! It was moist, tender and seasoned to the bone! The sauce added the right amount of kick without being overbearing and the waffle was so good! We shared an order of Mac and cheese and it was cheesy, gooey goodness. Lastly my guy had the cherry cobbler, which is his favorite dessert and let me tell you it did not disappoint him and it even made me love it, it won't touch one before! Luella's is definitely some of the better Southern food I've had in Chicago. I went for the second time a few weekends ago and it did not disappoint. I love chicken and waffles and get them every time. I was even craving the waffle again after I went and ended up coming back a week later just to get one on the side. The sides were good but not as good as the entrees. I thought the mac and cheese was too cheesy. The cornbread was good but not the best I've ever had. read more

I understand the hype. I really do. I understand why this place is so busy and the food takes forever. The food here is incredible. From the chicken to the mac n cheese to the french toast. Everything was so damn good. I got the Nashville Chicken and Waffles and they accidentally gave me the wrong thing so they gave me a waffle on the side free of charge. Very nice folks who work there. I will be back. The food is too good not to be. This place is busy so if you are willing to wait an hour for food, I would say it is worth it. read more

Words cannot describe how amazing my experience was! I thought the crying kid at another table was going to completely sour my experience, but holy sh**, the amazing flavors drowned him out! I normally don't drink sweet tea, but DAMN, that sweet tea is like nothing I've had! Perfect amount of sweetness! We had half the menu, and everything was FAB-U-LOUS! I can't wait to go back and try the other half haha! You know when a small place, with a small menu, in an area full of other restaurants makes it during COVID, they are doing alll the right things! read more

This was some good eating!!!!! I know they've been around for a while but this was my first visit. The service was great. I loved the contactless ordering. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with a side of bacon. If I had known the biscuits and gravy had fried chicken AND andouille sausage, I would have passed on the bacon. It was great and very filling. AND IT WAS $15 Y'ALL!!!! I tasted the other dishes. The cream cheese strawberry French toast was SO GOOD!!!! It was on another level good with a carmelized slight crunch in each bite. The salmon croquette dish was delicious with some of the best fingerling potatoes. The shrimp and grits were rich and very tasty. Selfish on the shrimp though. Would definitely return. read more

This southern restaurant is located in Lincoln square. It's a nice neighborhood to park and explore or window shop before or after brunch. They are open 10-8pm Saturdays & Sundays, 4-8pm Wednesdays-Fridays and closed Mondays & Tuesdays. Reservations was made but I think one could have dinned in without one. The chicken and waffles is a must have. That's the crunchiest chicken I have had since @oldladygang in ATL. If you don't order anything else it's ok. Lol. Salmon Croquettes was also ok but a tad bit underwhelming compared to the Chicken and waffles. The Corn Bread was ok, wasn't as good as @pearlschicago which is definitely the best I have had in Chicago. Mac and Cheese was also ok, also not the best I've had. Lastly, the beignets which was good but a little too sweet for me. I'll definitely be back even if it's just for the Chicken and Waffles. Would also like to try the shrimp & grits, biscuits & gravy as well as their collard greens. Brunch came to about $30 per person which wasn't too bad. Ambience was casual and customer service was great. Overall, I'll give this place a 4/5 read more

So I've finally landed at this well known and talked spot. I suggest to arrive early. There is quite a wait but the wait is worth it. Me and my stepmom had the shrimp and grits (Sidebar, I've side eyed my step mom because she ate the grits but not the shrimp so I ate the shrimp). Her sister has the chicken and waffles which the chicken was so juicy and has that southern brine taste to it which makes it so authentic southern style from scratch taste. The cornbread was good (I think it's some bourbon in it ) but it was good. Great service. Yes the place is small, but quaint. I would come again. But definitely the moment they are open just to get a seat! read more

4.5 stars. I got the biscuits and chicken gumbo. Both were great. The biscuits were warm and soft, and the jam was yummy too. I'd never had gumbo before, and I'd describe this as a somewhat buttery (?) and thick chili. Definitely would order from here again! read more

I wanted to love Luella's. I came for Sunday brunch with a friend and everything on the menu looked amazing. But their service was disappointing. Our server was very attentive but the kitchen service was lacking. After ordering, it took about 10 minutes to get our coffees and then an additional 35 minutes to get the first dish we ordered. Yep. 45 minutes for the first plate. And then 5 more minutes for the rest of our meal. The food was amazing. We got a biscuit with gravy and chicken and jalaepenos and then a french toast dish. I forget the names of both and their online menu doesn't list their brunch menu unless you're looking during brunch hours. Their ordering system is kind of annoying. You order from your phone but it doesn't seem to be an efficient ordering system because it required a decent amount of instruction on how to use and pay. Overall, I want to say I'll be back but honestly I'm not sure. I normally don't spend more than an hour at brunch (unless it's boozy) and the fact that it takes almost an hour to get your food almost ruined the entire experience. read more

Overall a good experience for chicken and grits, but would caution people against the Nashville style chicken. Pros- Food was made for each order and not precooked - kudos! Great fried chicken Grits were authentic Good service Cons- Greens were little bland for my taste...salt and pepper would have helped. But my wife like the greens... Nashville Chicken was disappointing since it was not the true Nashville style...they used sauce. Recommend getting regular fired chick with sauce on the side. read more
First time here and it was AMAZING! Nice restaurant with lots of seating. Tried the Nashville hot chicken and waffles $17 and it was amazing! The amount of flavor on the chicken was tasteful and the seasoning wasn't over season which I like. And the waffles with the chicken was an amazing combo! There is no parking lot, just street parking so depending on the day you might have to park and walk to the location. I will definitely come back to try the dinner menu! read more

My friend and I waited over an hour for our food. The chicken was half-cooked, the Mac & cheese was old and dry, the bowl of collard greens had more smoked meat than greens, and the biscuits were brown on the outside but uncooked on the inside. WHAT A WAY TO DISGRACE LUELLA'S NAME.. We complained about our food, and showed pictures to the "server", who claimed that they couldn't do anything about our food because we had touched it, and he was going to alert the owner that was not onsite. I'm guessing that was untrue because we never heard anything from the owner, regarding replacement or refund. We spent $109.64 on HORRIBLE FOOD. Such a wonderful restaurant located in Lincoln Square. Great atmosphere and near several other businesses. Parking can be a bit of a challenge pending on the time of day, but that's Chicago for you. Really great team of people staffed here and extremely helpful in communicating about the menu, ordering, and overall history of the restaurant. I ordered the Baked Shrimp and Andouille which was remarkable. I would definitely recommend and the other customers plates of different food options looked delicious. Make sure you grab the buttermilk biscuits too. read more
We arrived to support a Black owned business. Let me say I AM NOT NEVER GOING TO BE A FAN OF PAYMENT BEFORE FOOD OR SERVICE at a sit down restaurant. I don't know anyone who has or appreciates that business practice. After finding that out, I wanted to leave. I want to support Black businesses is the only reason I didn't walk out. As we arrived at the 10a opening for the day, the first strike was having to wait for ordered food that wasn't at the table over 30 minutes later. I'm also not liking the lack of a held menu. Everything here is via the QR code, including ordering and payment. What if I don't have or didn't bring my phone? Just like this restaurant not having a tea but coffee, everyone doesn't have a phone or drink coffee. That being said, after ordering, paying and tipping the meal came and happily the service increased. I ordered the Biscuits and Gravy. It had fried boneless chicken in the middle of rich bold flavors. The photo and description doesn't do it justice. I also ordered the 5 cheese Mac & Cheese. It was one of the best Mac & Cheese I have ever tasted. I can say the beginning was rocky but I forgot all my gripes once I got to eating this DELICIOUS FOOD. Plentiful portion with great flavor. My friend had the Salmon Croquettes with a zesty flavorful pasta. It was an amazing combination. I forgot to mention we started with fresh beignets. They were warm, but ok. I thought a little more powdered sugar could help but they definitely were a welcome treat before breakfast. Given the whole experience, the food spoke for itself. While a little slow on the uptake, the food was excellent. I appreciated it enough to convince myself of another return and if you know what you are walking into this place is worth a shot. 4 of 5 stars because the pay first model sucks ass! read more

This place gets a 4.5 rating from me! This is a small place with not much light. With the kitchen being right there, you will definitely see the thick kitchen smoke while dining in. We went for a Friday dinner and we had a reservation but the place wasn't too crowed so it I guess you could get a place without reservation maybe? They have indoor seating and there is minimal contact with the staff. You get to order using your phone from your table and even pay through the website. So easy to order food and avoid contact!! We ordered the Nashville fried chicken and waffles, Nashville fried chicken and collard greens, buttermilk fried chicken and grits, buttermilk fried chicken and Mac n cheese and unsweetened iced tea. Nashville fried chicken and waffles - loved the fried chicken but the waffles were just meh. Wasn't a huge fan of the waffles! I regretted getting the waffles. Should've just gone with a side of greens. Collard greens - who knew a veggie side would taste better than fried chicken!!! I could just have a bowl of the greens for dinner. Mac n cheese - I didn't taste this but it did look cheesy and yummy. My five year old nephew enjoyed eating it. Grits - this was my first time trying grits and loved it! Again, would just have a bowl of grits and greens for dinner. Fat just makes everything taste better lol. Bonus : All their dishes except the beignets don't have eggs! Even the fried chicken does not have eggs in their batter. Perfect for egg allergy peeps who wanna have so good Mac n cheese and fried chicken. The food was definitely good! The portions are pretty big. We did have leftovers! Like a lot. You get three fried chicken pieces per plate and that's a lot! The price is a bit on the pricey side! 18 dollars for three fried chicken pieces and a small side. But I guess the price was reasonable for the portion and quality of the food! Is this restaurant still Black Owned? To Go order of: Fried Buttermilk Chicken with side of Greens Nashville Hot Chicken with Waffle New Side- Green Beans New Side - Brisket Mac n Cheese Nashville chicken was fresh and delicious! Waffle was undercooked and soggy - garbage Buttermilk chicken which has been my favorite for over a year wasn't freshly fried. Green Beans - nicely seasoned and good Brisket Mac was good! Brisket was plenty with good flavor Overall good meal however I watched an older black couple watch the staff and kitchen cooks for 6 min and got up and left. Don't blame them. Everyone was Mexican working at the restaurant? We Support Black owned restaurants that provide jobs for us when others don't. I've never seen a black cook at a Mexican restaurant. read more

Can someone tell me what's going on with Luella's? I tried to order last Wednesday and they were closed, no one picks up the phone and their voicemail is full. Tried placing an Uber-eats order in advance today and have no idea if we'll get our food!
They are very much open and bustling! Sometimes they close for much needed r and r for the staff and family. Check out their popcorn too!
