We had Lufkin BBQ custom smoke our Christmas Turkey. It was superb. We dropped off the frozen bird (15.5 pounds) the week prior to Christmas and picked it up on Christmas Eve during the afternoon. We requested that our turkey cold since we weren't eating it until Christmas. They offer a hot option as well if you're eating it the same day. The service provided during the drop off process and pick up was fast and efficient. Staff were friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed the smoked turkey and will very likely use the custom meat smoking service in the future. We also plan on dining at Lufkin BBQ in the future. We only ordered the pecan pie here because we were really hoping for a baked potato -- but surprisingly, they don't serve them, which seemed a bit unusual for a BBQ place. That said, the drive-thru staff was super helpful and even recommended a spot down the road where I might find one, especially since I wasn't planning to order anything else. The pecan pie was pretty decent, though! I love how small towns like this have such friendly folks who support each other's businesses. Went to school at SFA and worked in Lufkin in college and hadn't ever been to this place. Was driving through and decided, today's my day. The restaurant itself is older, but cute. I love all the natural wood, and the smoked smell that bbq places have. Ordered the classic combo (brisket, sausage, and pork ribs). The lean brisket wasn't all that great, and the moist piece i got wasn't anything to write home about. The sausage however was pretty good. Pork rib was fall off the bone and probably what I enjoyed most from the platter. Their Cole slaw wasn't great, and the potato salad was good. What I disliked most about this place was their bbq sauce. Just wasn't good. Reminded me of spiced campbells tomatoe soup. There's a restaurant near me in Houston that has the exact same flavor profile sauce and I don't go there either. Now that doesn't mean other folks love it. We went here based on The Daytripper's website recommendations and were sorely disappointed. We ordered at the counter and the staff was friendly and answered our questions. That's about the only redeeming quality. The brisket was bland and did not have a good texture. The beans were ok. The potato salad was just not good. It was SO sweet! In town for the day and wanted to try the recommended local Lufkin BBQ. Overall a nice restaurant, clean and extremely friendly. I tried the ribs and sliced brisket. The fried yeast biscuits are hands down amazing, heavy, but definitely a must have. The portions were decent, and the service was friendly. There was no rush on bringing your order out, however after mowing through a few biscuits I didn't mind the wait. The ribs had good flavor and were tender enough, while the brisket was overall, ok, nothing special. Sadly, this place has really declined over the past several years. Upon entering the place and being wrapped in the aroma of smoky goodness, you have high expectations. Unfortunately, when the meal is served (brisket plate) those high hopes are dashed. The meat portion was so small it was insulting. You will never find really good BBQ in East or Deep East Texas. All the pit masters kill their meat like they are trying to see who can make it the most dry and disgusting turds. Plus, several places try to pass off cheap roast beef as brisket. Smoke ring, dream on. Most don't cook it long enough to achieve this. Also, make sure you look for whether or not their employees are wearing masks. I have boycotted several joints because of no masks. Unfortunately their patrons are as STUPID. This place has its highs and its not so highs. The rolls are really good, they come out piping hot, but they better once they've cooled just a tad, so you can really taste the flavor of the bread. I had one with butter and one with honey. We both got the three meat plate which had its pluses and minuses. For the amount of meat, I think its a little over priced. I'm usually a huge smoked turkey fan, this was not similar to anything I've had at a BBQ place. While it did have a good flavor it was sliced thin like lunch meat, and seemed to be pre-sliced, not to order, cause it was a little slimy like it has been sitting in a steam table. The ribs are a MUST. They were the most enjoyable part. Great flavor, fell straight off the bone, so tender. This is what we will come back for. I had the brisket and hubby had the pork, both were just regular. The potato salad had good flavor but the texture of mashed potatoes, so I cared for it, and hubby would had preferred chunks. The house BBQ sauce is more vinegary than we like, but it wasn't horrible. The service was good. She helped us immediately and was also attentive to her other customers needs like helping an elderly table out the door. I have mixed feelings between a 3 & 4 but since my only real complaint is some of the meat just being mediocre, this is Texas where we have some of the best BBQ, so I'll keep it at a 4 and adjust after I've tries the other local places. read more

Brisket was dry outside and bland. Tastes like it was cooked in the oven and then left in the warmer at the wrong temp for too long, as real smoked meats rarely spoil quickly, and this stuff was deadly. The old, gray mare ain't what she used to be. Once THE place for barbecue, the sad truth is that Lufkin BBQ has experienced a steady decline over the past several years. Meats are ok. Sides are ok. We've noticed inconsistencies in the potato salad, which is our standard side order. Sometimes it's just right, while others it's much too heavy on the black pepper. Rolls are still good but they are cost prohibitive, as the majority of the menu has become. We eat here every now and then, mainly because we can't seem to let go of what it *used* to be and we usually get decent service at the drive-thru. read more

I grew up here. I love the rolls. Chip beef ok. What was most disappointing is we came into town. Ordered sausage links (not cut up) and chip beef sandwiches and rolls to eat on our way out if town. They acted exasperated by having to cut up the meat. Then I asked for some utensils (to eat with). There were 5 of us! She gave us one set. Said shed have to charge me for more??? Really. You may want to take this review with a grain of salt as I am not a native Texan and therefore am not fluent in the art of BBQ, however I did marry a Texan if that's worth anything. Still need to get used to restaurants that have smoking sections, but luckily the smoking section was far enough removed that I couldn't smell it from where we were sitting. Definitely the kind of place where the waitress calls you shug and asks what they can get for you, hun. I ordered a sliced beef sandwich - typical texan fare, sliced beef on bread with onion and what not on the side. I didn't think the beef was anything special. Tasty, not bad, but not great. Just average. I chose slaw for my side and it was good. Appropriate amount of crunch, not soggy (which I hate), tasted as it should not like mayonaise. The bread rolls however - to my amazement - are FRIED! Fried bread! Delish. In fact, I just might ask to go back next time we visit just for the bread. read more
