You may want to take this review with a grain of salt as I am not a native Texan and therefore am not fluent in the art of BBQ, however I did marry a Texan if that's worth anything. Still need to get used to restaurants that have smoking sections, but luckily the smoking section was far enough removed that I couldn't smell it from where we were sitting. Definitely the kind of place where the waitress calls you shug and asks what they can get for you, hun. I ordered a sliced beef sandwich - typical texan fare, sliced beef on bread with onion and what not on the side. I didn't think the beef was anything special. Tasty, not bad, but not great. Just average. I chose slaw for my side and it was good. Appropriate amount of crunch, not soggy (which I hate), tasted as it should not like mayonaise. The deep fried rolls are worth the five stars alone. They are like heaven and I could eat them alone if the rest of my family wasn't eating them faster than they come. The barbecue is also great and their potatoe salad (looks like mashed potatoes) is amazing. Really friendly service as well. Definitely try this place out! read more

Had the chopped beef sandwich plate.....not impressed. Not remotely a traditional flavor. The potato salad was mashed potatoes with an odd flavor that wasn't a good odd at all. I do not recommend. Better off visiting another establishment. read more

The ribs are tender. The brisket has a good flavor but a little dry for my tastes. The chicken was juicy and had a good Smokey flavor. The one thing I didn't care for was the potatoes salad which was mashed potatoes with veggies stirred into it. I always prefer potatoes salad in chunk potatoes so the dressing coats the potatoes and the vegetables are blended in to enhance the salad. The beans were excellent. I came on a weekday lunch hour and used the drive thru service since we had our pets with us. Service was very friendly and fairly quick, I can't complain there except that I was double charged for my $30 order using my credit card. They are taking care of that problem however. The food was ok, really I cannot say it was great with exception to the beans they serve which are pretty delicious. The brisket was a little dry and the sauce is lacking in spice and flavor, just your basic BBQ sauce. It made me really miss having a bodacious BBQ around. The reason I tried Lufkin BBQ was for the rolls my husband could not stop raving about - however those were a deep fried disappointment. I felt like they were hard on the outside and undercooked inside, really reminding me of a stale donut. I left feeling disappointed and a little lighter in the pockets. A shame since I was hoping I could make this place a regular stop of ours. read more

Lufkin BBQ is a long standing business in Lufkin,Tx. The service is good and friendly. The fried yeast rolls are great. I love BBQ and I am super critical of it. The BBQ here is decent but not great. The meat is tender and you can see the smoke ring on the meat. It was however a bit dry for brisket. I believe the prices would be reasonable if the portioning was just a little more generous for the meat. Not sure if I like the mashed potatoes as they seem to have pickles in them. The coleslaw not too shabby. Overall a pretty good experience but not going to be one of my regular food joints to visit. read more

Today I got off late a made my mind up to get bbq so I stopped by Lufkin bbq . While sitting in the drive thru I smelled something burning but didn't pay much attention to it . I got the pork sandwich plate that cost $10.00 , once I got home I attemped to eat and found out what that smell was (my food) I called the store and asked to talk to a manager and some guy told me I was talking to one . I told him what my concern was and he told me he didn't smell anything burning and he would go and check the food and thanked me for calling ! The barbecue beef was very good. But it's those rolls that put this place over the top. Our meals came with a basket of them, with butter and honey on the table, and oh my goodness, the combo of those with the beef was just heavenly. Great service and friendly atmosphere too. Wanted to eat 40.00 worth of bbq I purchased to go while my wife eat a dine in meal I was told by the pound food could not be eaten inside. The owner said that it cost money for air conditioner and such. Well could be the reason it was a ghost town. I will not be back and would not recommend. read more

I remember eating here 20 years ago and it was fabulous, what has happened since then? I ate there today (5/7/2016) and ordered the 3 meat plate. I hardly got 1/4 lbs. total of sliced beef (doubled)and ribs, years ago they smothered there meat with a generous helping of homemade sauce, I received about 2tbs in a small cup, which made my meat dry and I choked it down as a result. I remember there yeast rolls being a little shy of baseball size and all you could eat, only 15 years ago. Today I received 3 rolls that were gummy and you had to pay additional if you wanted more. Potato salad was instant potatoes from the taste and the beans were awful. A can of Bush Beans would taste better. The current owners are using the old "good" name to take advantage of people willing to pay crazy prices. For lunch I paid close to $18, which I could pay $21 and get all-you-can-eat snow crab legs, crawfish, BBQ ribs, roasted beef and chicken in Shreveport, LA. I will never eat at Lufkin Bar B Q again. Eat there if you want to throw your money away. My meal should have been less than $7 dollars for what I received. Some reviews on here say "a lot of history 65+ years," but how many changing of hands has gone on. I'm sorry folks but history does not make up for ridiculous pricing for the amount and quality of food. If I want history I can go to the public library, which is free the last time I checked. The only way this will stop is if people try other establishments to see what real quality BBQ is. I'm pretty sure when my granddaughter gets her easy-bake-oven she can turn out better BBQ than Lufkin Bar B Q. read more

I want to give this a five star but the bbq just doesnt measure up to the best but it is good and not too greasy.. That said the fried rolls are just awesome and overcome any other shortcomings this restaurant might have. Staff is very friendly with that feel at home atmosphere we expect in East Texas and the prices are affordable with large portions. Worth a visit just to try those fantastic fried rolls. read more

the staff is INCREDIBLY friendly and the food is great! this is what we had: potato salad - mashed potato consistency, very good for people who are fans of it! I didn't eat much because overall I'm not a potato salad person. beans - excellent, very good taste and texture on them as well. salad - basic, but fresh. The ranch is good and the portions are pretty large. BBQ sauce - a little spicy, but great flavor and you could basically dip or mix anything with it and it'd be tasty. chipped beef sandwich - texture was perfect, not mushy or greasy at all, and the sandwich was large; the portion was almost too large for the buns! pork sandwich - same as above, though i preferred the chipped beef. (; rolls - oh my gosh. Amazing, slightly crunchy outside and soft on the inside. You can put almost anything on or in them and they'll still be very edible. If you go inside and sit down you get to converse with some of the nicest wait staff I have ever experienced, seriously. My first visit to Lufkin and I had to find a local bbq joint so I paid this place a visit. I got the sliced brisket plate. The beans and potato salad were great, and the fried yeast rolls were amazing. Unfortunately, as some others have noted the brisket was a bit dry. Stringers compared to Dickey's gets beat. Stringers tastes a little smokier but it is expensive and the rolls are a coronary disaster. Dickey's has a better roll anyway. Sorry. read more

I ate the chopped beef sandwich. The beef must be mixed with something to make it a creamy consistency. It was not good at all. I didn't care for the beans or potato salad. The rolls were the best thing, but they were very oily. My husband says I should give their ribs a try. Maybe I will. read more
