I discovered this restaurant on Instagram and instantly knew I had to visit and I'm so glad I did! The food absolutely blew my expectations. Everything was delicious, and the prices were very affordable. I also love that it's BYOB, it's great to have the option to bring your own wine.The meatballs and pasta were incredible, full of flavor and cooked to perfection. And don't skip dessert it's a must! We ate here two weeks ago and the wait staff was amazing, the food was delicious, and the restaurant was well lit and decorated. We loved it so much that we ordered take out for Easter Sunday (picked up on Saturday). We ordered Penne Vodka, Chicken Giambotta, Mozzerlla and Corroza, Chicken Parm, Meatballs, and Rigatoni Marinara. Everything was delicious, the staff is always friendly and helpful. I have been hearing about this resturant forever! After going, I completely understand!! Everything I tried here is amazing! All of the food is so fresh and delicious. First we started off with bruschetta. I normally don't eat that, but it was so amazingly fresh and good and I couldn't stop eating it. I ordered cavatelli & broccoli with shrimp and I had to eat it until my stomach hurt! The people I was with ordered rigatoni with vodka sauce, basalmic chicken, and shrimp scampi. The rigatoni and chicken were very good but the scampi was amazing! I couldn't stop eating it. I have no idea if I want to order the cavatelli or the scampi next time! The service was great. I can't remember our waitress' name but she was very good. The ambiance is pretty casual so don't worry about getting dressed up. After viewing the Cherry Blossoms at Brook Branch went here for an Italian late lunch. A small but nicely decorated place and as I learned a parking lot across the street. Use the entry monitor and let them know youre eating at Luigi's and they will buzz you in. Service was friendly and efficient, they went out of their way to make the experience a nice one. Food was good solid Italian, nothing fancy simply well made, well portioned and delicious. Fried Calamari was crisp and not greasy and the sauce was mild and fresh tasting. Mains of pork chop and escarole and beans was nicely done and enough to take some home for dinner. Ravioli was nicely cooked and well filled with ricotta. They have a few deserts and I would suggest getting whatever they have that is house made. Overall a great experience and I would definitely return. read more

Took out 2 entrees -eggplant rollantini and calamari marinara. Plus an order of mussels. Specifically asked that spaghetti come on the side with garlic and oil. Not received correct. Order was not correct. Calamari came on top of the spaghetti marinara that I specifically requested. Very little Calamari and too much spaghetti for $25.00.?! Food quality was fair to poor. Dead mussels, additionally with broken shells ,poor quality mussel meat. On top of that got up charged $3.00 on each meal as I asked my spaghetti on the side. Was not informed. My new favorite Italian spot!! Authentic, freshly made, and amazing service by 2 of the nicest ladies ever . Extremely jovial, down to earth, and made us feel like we were regulars. Checked on us from time to time but not overbearing, made sure we had what we needed and super laid back. Never made us feel rushed. I had Linguine with clams in red sauce. Fresh pasta. Fresh clams. Amazing flavor. My other half had the pork chop. Juicy, fresh, and delicious! For dessert we split the pistachio stuffed croissant; also made fresh to order. This place was what I'd hoped to find in Newark! Excellent pasta in huge portions. I had the penne arribiate and it was excellent, spicy , delicious and a huge portion (couldn't finish it all) all at a great price! The homemade cannolis are irresistible and so very good! The staff was extremely attentive , accommodating and kind to our large group. It's easy to see why this place is so popular. Highly recommend it! I love Italian food and so does my husband. He wanted pasta and it was Friday, which means I wasn't cooking lol I've been searching for genuine Italian food close by. By golly, I found what I was looking for! True, authentic Italian cuisine. It's BYOB which we wish we had known earlier, but, we were saved by a near by liquor store. We started with calamari, which was fresh and delicious. Not that frozen stuff other place push out. A huge difference in quality and taste was present. They served us a pitcher of ice and glasses for our wine. Fresh french bread with a high quality olive oil for dipping. The oil was so tasty I wanted to drink it! My husband ordered chicken parmigiana and I ordered chicken francese. On the menu, they only had veal francese but had no issue making mine chicken. I just can't do veal. It does state on the menu if you don't see it, ask for it. I love that they encourage that. The ladies were attentive. This place was small, dark and cozy. Not really romantic, but genuine and authentic in its vibe. Hubby's chicken parm was amazing. The portion was huge (3 cutlets) and my chicken francese was equally portioned as well. We were told we couldn't order fettuccine as a side which was disappointing, but, we could do linguine which is only slightly thinner. Okay, fine, we settled. The red sauce was chunky, well, seasoned. My meal was good not great. I can make chicken francese myself and I'm an excellent cook, so I'm a tough critic. For dessert we had a pistachio copra and a nutella tasting tort I forgot the name of. Caramel cappuccino and an espresso to top it off. The pistachio copra was delicious and the tort was good but just one note. The drinks were made well and were comforting. I picked Luigis out of 5 other restaurants I had in mind. It's hard not to notice that you're business has flies all over water jars from the 90s also, the water fountain is attracting bugs and flies. I brought a date to the north end of Newark where I grew up boasting about my Italian heritage and a small restaurant "gem" Luigi's Albeit it was more than 5 years since I had been back to the neighborhood. I was so embarrassed by the food quality. I had known the restaurant for homemade specialties. My date was in the mood for pasta and ordered the ravioli they were tough and dry and the sauce was tart under cooked. When I asked I found none of the pasta is homemade anymore. Really the worse frozen ravioli I had tasted. I had the chicken savioe. Disappointing as well. The chicken was not tender and was in a thick brown sauce bitter nothing like stretch's chicken Savoy from the Belmont tavern The food quality has changed greatly sorry to say I can't recommend what was once a home made food experience Did I mention our pitcher of water had a big dead fly in it. read more

From what I've eaten here it has been good. I don't think it's anything special that I can remember, but it has been a while. I do know that everything is à la carte. If you order a dinner, that's all you get. No salad or bread at least in the to go delivery. in the restaurant, I think you may get some bread with the olive oil. I can also say their prices are higher than most other Italian restaurants that I frequent. And those other Italian restaurants do give you a salad and bread with your delivery order dinner. read more

Our party of five discovered Luigi's by chance and found this traditional Italian restaurant a pleasant surprise. It is in the Forest Hill section of Newark and long a mainstay in the neighborhood. We were the first to arrive for lunch in the small storefront restaurant of a dozen tables. When we left, every table was full. It has a full traditional menu which we started with stuffed mushrooms and antipasto. The mortadella and salami were nicely garnished with olives, cheese and tomatoes. The bread was fresh and warm. Our entrees consisted of large portions. The Veal Luigi, Chicken Napolitano, Chicken Sorrentino and Arugula Salad were served with an abundance of side salads and pasta. The cuisine was a nice oasis in the urban landscape. Nevertheless, from a constructive culinary critique, the kitchen can always improve. Some dishes had large portions of hot peppers and tomatoes, but adding some cooked mushrooms and onions would have added more color and texture to the entrees. The Chicken Napolitano could have had a seared glaze of panko instead of sprinkled bread crumbs that lacked consistency. The black olives in the antipasto could have more ripe texture instead of looking like shriveled prunes. It is BYOB, but we ordered soft drinks, ice tea and hot tea. We found that the milk served with the tea could have been cooler than room temperature and wish that the refills would have been complimentary instead of charged for each serving. Service was attentive and friendly but uneven on certain orders. Despite these minor items, we found Luigi's to offer great value and would return to try other menu items. read more

The food here is fantastic! What isnt fantastic is the prices they charge... If the prices were on par with all the other italian restaurants it would be a 5! My wife and I live close by here, and enjoy ordering food from here frequently! I usually go with my staple of chicken parm which is the best in the area. She usually gets her shrimp scampi or angel hair with garlic oil and chicken. We have never eaten a bad meal here ever! The food really is amazing. As I mentioned, its only downfall is its crazy high prices... My wifes Shrimp Scampi was $25, after checking all the other Italian Restaurants in Bloomfield and and within 1 square mile, the highest price i found was $17... and as low as $13. And I think that i was over charged for my Tortellini Alfredo with Shrimp. I think i was charged $30 (Could be mistaken) I believe that the reciept said $25 plus $5 for the Shrimp. The Calamari they serve is by far the best around! Perfectly cooked and mouthwatering! My wife and i fight over the last one each time. Fair warning, the Spidini is not meat!!!!!! It is a fried mozzorella sandwhich, not what i was expecting.... My father in law loves their meatballs! I forget what else he gets, but food is amazing! Their dessert is fantastic! We love the canoli and the cheesecake! Not the biggest fan of the apple cake... A little disappointed that they didnt have ice cream when we went, and we were still charged the full price! Usually they offer a substitution, or a discount when they dont give you everything they say they will... Oh well! Now we know... No free refills! Paid $2.50 for each of my 3 sweet teas. To wrap up, food is fantastic, but you will be in shock when you receive the bill later on.... If your on a tighter budget, this is not the place for you! There are plenty of other Italian Restaurants that are just as good for alot less. From now on we will only be going here if we are in a rush, and because we have a few gift cards from here that EXPIRE AFTER ONE YEAR!!!!!!!! They do not honor it after one year... Once they are done, not sure if we will be back. I dont mind driving an extra 10 minutes to save $20+. The inside is beautiful! We came here for a 10 year anniversary dinner for my brother and sis in law. There was 15 of us; which 6 were kids and 1 baby. We were seated in this beautiful Garden room and it wasn't too noisy for the kids (thank goodness). The décor and ambience was just a nice intimate feel. The staff was accommodating and nice especially Susan who responded to my email and we spoke briefly on the phone. The wait staff (sorry I forgot your names) was attentive and made sure everything was good. Now the food was hmmm...amazing! We had ordered pizza for the kids (they ate them all); it was crispy and thin. The crab cake with the mushrooms and corn sauce was delicious (my sis in law wanted seconds). My brother said the meatball was good and he is picky with his food too! The pasta is a must try because it is fresh made which you can taste. We also ordered mussels, baked clams, salmon, chicken parmesan (it's a sharing portion), their lobster special, penned Toscano and steak tagliata (creamy polenta and spinach was delicious). (Sorry, I didn't have pics of entree or pasta. The food came and we digged in.) This place is as "Old School" Italian as they come. The food is excellent and the portions are huge. one of the best meals I'd ever had. The portion size could have fed a table of 4. The atmosphere is very "Old and Local Italian Restaurant" Luigi's does not server beer, wine or liquor but a liquor store is conveniently located next door. Even the free table bread was warm and toasted and delicious. This small quaint restaurant knocked it out of the park. We live only two blocks away and are soooo happy we found this jewel. Everything was so delicious. Next time we will try it order less so we can make it to dessert. Luigi...you did yourself proud today. 20 of us descended on Luigi's this afternoon for yet another work Christmas party and this little Italian restaurant brought much happiness to our bellies. First off, I love BYOB places, especially Italian places because I hate having to pay restaurant prices for wine. The place is small, maybe 20 tables, and kind of reminded me of something out of the Sopranos. I happened to be the first one to show up today and the waitress happily got me going with my wine. Once we all got seated (and drinking) it was time to order...now I can't go through 20 meals so I'll just stick with my end of the table. Our end of the table started with the fried calamari, two risotto balls, and the antipasto. Holy crap, holy crap, holy crap the appetizers were absolutely awesome. The huge calamari rings were crispy, but not oily and the sauce was sweet and garlicky...this might sound crazy, but it MIGHT have been the best fried calamari I've had in an Italian restaurant. The risotto balls (crispy outside and deliciously risotto-y on the inside) and antipasto (nice prosciutto, salad, and veggies) were also superb...it was a great start-and we hoped it would just get better. I ordered the hot sausage with broccoli rabe and the meals around me were eggplant rollatini, chicken parm, and grilled chicken over green bean salad. The other three at my end of the table all seemed to enjoy their meals, but not as much as I enjoyed mine. The broccoli rabe was seasoned very nicely with slices of garlic and a little spiciness, which was nice and really brought the meal together. The two huge hot sausage links that came with the broccoli rabe was very tasty, but a touch overdone. For dessert I had a coffee and we shared a cannoli. The coffee was fine, but the cannoli...OMG, it was so good I was mad I didn't get one for myself. The shell was crispy and the filling was just delicious...a nice mix of creamy ricotta and sweetness. I'm not kidding, I will bring my wife to Luigi's JUST for the cannoli...that's how good it was. All in all, our service was great and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal today. I want to reserve the 5th star for my next trip, but not only would I recommend this place to anyone, I will suggest we go back here again next year for our Christmas party! read more

We spent a day in NJ before heading to Germany, so we decided to have some Italian food while we were in town. We stopped at this place based on the Yelp reviews and we were not disappointed! The only reason I'm not giving 5/5 is because they don't serve wine. It felt as if something was missing during the meal. Aside from that, the experience was great! The service was top notch, and the food was delicious! We started off with some fried calamari, which wasn't greasy and tasted really fresh. They also serve a basket of bread, which we had to stop eating so we wouldn't get full before the meal. The bread was warm and super tasty. The entrées were sooooooo efffen good! And the portions were huge... too big, even. I had the chicken parm, which comes in three giant cutlets. I ate one and my husband gladly finished the rest. It also came with a side of pasta, which he also devoured. He had the cheese stuffed ravioli in vodka sauce, which was also pretty awesome. We've had a hard time finding good Italian restaurants in Austin, so we had to take advantage while we could. It was well worth the stop! read more

Went here for a holiday work party with about 20 people and I was really impressed by how well the staff handled the size of our crowd. We didn't have to wait to get our BYOB bottles open and we were served pretty promptly. As far as I could tell, no one's order got messed up. Impressive. The food was okay. I was disappointed they ran out of the lasagna special at noon, especially considering there were only 2 or 3 other tables there aside from ours. So, I went with the chicken parm instead. It was well breaded but the marinara sauce was a little watery, which made my breading soggy. The pasta was also a little overcooked and they served it in a bowl which had a bunch of water on the bottom, either because they didn't sufficiently drain the pasta or because the sauce was watery. I didn't bother with dessert since I wasn't thrilled with my meal but I ended up regretting that decision once I saw the size of the cannoli. A generous co-worker let me try a portion of hers and I was blown away by the richness and freshness of the filling and the texture of the shell. Not soggy but not burnt and overcooked either. Just right. At least that goes for the one I tried. Another coworker pointed out that his shell was burnt. Based solely on the service and the cannoli I tried, I so badly want to give Luigi's 5 stars but since this is an Italian restaurant that served me overcooked pasta and watery marinara, I have to settle for 3. read more

I've eaten here many times. This is by far one of my favorite places to eat anywhere period. Family like environment, great spot to bring friends. It's BYOB but that helps. The prices are very reasonable. Everything on the menu is fantastic. You could probably just order a bunch of appetizers and drink all night but you have to try the entrees.
