This is the type of joint I dream about. Old school NY/NJ red sauce Italian food and pizza. Today, I opted for the mana of the gods, pizza; one white, one plain cheese. Let me tell you, Guy's is pure pizza nirvana. A 16" crust that is perfectly crispy and has a nice chew. Sauce that accentuates the cheese layer above and pays tribute to the tasty crust below. And the cheese, with pull and snap that brings the pie together in a crescendo of pizza magic. And the white pie was equally as delicious with awesome hints of garlic punctuating through globs of perfectly seasoned ricotta. And the folks there are super nice, too. TAKEOUT REVIEW: Normally I'm the food runner/procurer/fixer in our household. However, I've been sick this week so my husband has been taking charge. Last Thursday night, he ordered food from Guys for us. He placed the order over the phone - a large cheese pie and two eggplant parmesan dinners - and picked up at the restaurant. Fast forward 25 minutes later, he walks through our door carrying dinner in his arms. The eggplant parm entrees were packed neatly inside a Supreme Italiano Large Cannoli Shell box - and on top of this was a large pizza box with the cheese pie. We devoured the cheese pie first. The dough/crust was just the right balance of soft and chewy but also crisp. I was full from the pizza, so I just ate some of the entree that night and had the leftovers for lunch the next day. But of course I had to try the food while it was hot and made to order. My husband ate everything and marveled at how good everything was. I know the word unctuous can be polarizing when describing food, but it's what I first thought of after trying their eggplant parm. Here's a definition I found online that captures what I mean: "Within the culinary world, unctuous takes on a whole new dimension, enhancing the sensory experience of food. It refers to dishes that boast a lusciously smooth and velvety texture, often accompanied by a luxurious mouthfeel." Dude, it's like eating delicious eggplant parm clouds - heavenly, soft, fluffy, and flavorful! It's a great comfort-food meal to lift your spirit. I kept hearing about Guy's from several neighbors and so I had to try it! I called and ordered a pizza and chicken parm hero. I didn't realize they didn't have a private parking lot (I should have asked), but there is a municipal lot across the street. When the owners saw I had a baby and a toddler with me, they were instantly sympathetic and insist that I next time have them deliver to save me some trouble. They even had one of their employees help me carry out my order since I had to cross the street to my vehicle. The pizza was delicious and very reasonably priced! The chicken parm hero was also good, and the bread was very soft. I am looking forward to trying an entree next time! read more

I absolutely LOVE this small, cozy restaurant. As soon as you walk in you feel like you're in Italy, so don't get scared if you hear the employees yelling at each other with their Italian accent. They have a lot of regulars who walk in and the owner automatically know what they're going to order. Hidden little gem on Valley Rd. in West Orange. The family that runs it is amazing. The food is fantastic. It may even be one of my favorite Italian restaurants in NJ. Guy's has been around for over 50 years, moving 9 years ago from Orange to its current location a block from Main Street across from the municipal parking lot. It is like the small local Mom and Pop Italian places I went to as a kid in the 1950's in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. It is a family operation, and most of the patrons are regulars. It is not much to look at if you're interested in ambiance (a few photos -- the cast of The Sopranos and Goodfellas on the wall) and quite small (about 6 tables), but the food is hearty, homemade, and very, very good. The cost is also hard to beat: classic cheese pizzas $7.95, specialty pizzas (Sicilian, Margherita, Broccoli Rabe & Sausage White Pie) $13.95, eggplant parmigiana $11.95, Stuffed Rigatoni $9.25, Fettuccine Puttanesca $10.95. Friday night is Fish Night with specials changing from week to week (Shrimp & Scallops with Lemon Garlic Sauce, Bucatini con Salsa di Tuna, Peppers, Potatoes, Mushrooms, and Onions). This is not a "destination" restaurant by any means, but if you are in the area, don't need fancy surroundings, and have an big appetite for some good Italian home cooking, this might just be the place to try. read more
