UPDATE I had dinner at Luigi's restaurant twice recently. In both cases they were invitations extended to me from people visiting from out of town. I didn't have the nerve to air my grievances and reluctantly agreed to go. I don't know that anything has appreciably changed since I was last there except for one notable thing. They are skimping on the sauce. I am positive about this. So, you now have pizza which has always been good which now is not as good. If you deep down LOVE pizza like I do and you ever find yourself in Akron, OH I would say that Luigi's is a must stop. If I have guests in town, I will try to bring them to Luigi's every time. When I first saw the box of the size "large" I ordered I had some concerns with how small the box was but to my pleasant surprise, the pizza is LARGE just in a thick/hearty kind of way. Located right on the square in downtown Akron, this old-school Italian joint exudes charm and homemade flavors. I brought a group of co-workers here (all of us for our first time) to see what all the "fuss" is about. We had decided beforehand to make this a "family style" meal in order to sample many of their well-known dishes. Coming on a rainy weekday afternoon (midway through the lunch hour) allowed us to be seated right away. We ordered drinks and started the table off with their cheese-piled-high salad. Any boy...they weren't kidding! The dressing seemed to be either a light Italian or an oil and vinegar combo. Even with standard iceberg lettuce it was an overflowing and enjoyable dish. For mains, we shared a combination of four items: large pepperoni pizza, lasagna, meatball casserole and an Italian sausage casserole. I have to say...the red sauce on top of all these dishes was outstanding. Along with these dishes came baskets of warm, pillowy bread which were the perfect vehicle to sop up that yummy sauce. The pizza is an unusual style...kind of like a deep-dish style crust, think was puffy; but the sauce, cheese and pepperoni on top made for a delicious, unique pie. Of the three casserole style dishes, my least favorite was the lasagna. It just did not have a richness of flavors I had expected from the many versions I had over the years. But, both the meatballs and Italian sausage dishes were spot on and really excellent. As many others have pointed out here, this place is strictly CASH ONLY...so be prepared! I've never physically being inside Luigi's but I've gotten takeout pizza once. I also tried their pizza on another occasion when someone from work ordered some. FOOD -- Delicious pepperoni pizza. I've eaten a slice of the pepperoni pizza on 2 separate occasions. I love the thick and sweet crust of their pizza. As one other Yelp reviewer described, the pizza crust is "buttery delicious" and I absolutely agree. My takeout experience was good. Someone from work got everyone's orders. I ordered one of the lunch specials which includes a pizza slice with a side salad for about $6.50. The pepperoni pizza slice was really small but tasty. The salad is very basic because it just has lettuce and some tomatoes along with a salad dressing. I enjoyed the salad though. Some Yelpers and a guy friend I spoke to, think that Luigi's is an okay restaurant. I think the whole hype around Luigi's is that the place has been around for a really long time so many people are loyal to the establishment. The first mention I have to make is that with any size salad you order, they will match your lettuce with a MOUND of cheese on top! The salad is simple, olive oil, olives, iceberg lettuce and tomatoes but the cheese make it unique! This place is very well known for their pizza! Very customizable to your liking. For roughly $10 I got a personal size pizza that had pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms and green bells! The crust was nice and crisp, the cheese pull went as faaar as I allowed it, and the taste was superb! They also have other Italian staples on the menu like sandwiches (melts), lasagna, pasta (ravioi, rigatoni, spaghetti) and best today all, they even do baked pasta (and you can do a half & half if you can't choose between two kinds). This place is a diamond of Akron. The food is amazing! Today I ordered a double salad, an Italian sub and lasagna. First off, the homemade dressing is delicious. Truly made the salad beyond belief. The lasagna was made with velvety layers of noodles and topped with meat sauce. The sub was just the right amount of spicy and delicious too. This place has a handicapped accessible ramp and entrance, as well as accommodating space for wheel chairs within. The bathrooms are a bit small for a wheelchair but there is space. I always love a good sit down pizza restaurant. Luigi's seemed to be very popular in Akron so I decided to give it a try. They opened at 3pm and prior to the doors opening there was a long line outside. Don't let this scare you aware as the restaurant is big enough to accommodate lots of people. I had the meatballs. They were really good. I LOVED the sauce. We also had a salad. This salad was drowning in cheese! So good. The salad dressing was subtle but classic Italian. Ps: you could buy the dressing by the bottle for $7.95. I got the cheese, pepperoni, and sausage pizza. It was pretty good. I loved the burnt cheese pieces. Overall, the pizza was good but it was not the best I have had. Next time I go I want to try the spaghetti and meatballs (since I loved the meatballs and sauce). Used to go here quite a bit in my early years. Nothing has changed in 20 yrs. The Good: They serve a nice side salad with plenty of fresh cheese and a lot of pastas (get the cheese baked on top). I've had a couple people tell me how amazing Luigi's is, but I don't get the appeal. To me this place is overrated. Like I guess I could understand if you grew up going to this place so you're used to it and it gives you nostalgia, or maybe it's the only non-chain decently priced "Italian" pizza place in the area so you don't have a lot of options? I stopped by with friends around 5:30-6pm on a Thursday and we did witness this place quickly fill up and become packed so obviously people like it, but really, I don't understand. So I tried the side house salad with cheese. Yes it does come with a pile of cheese, but it's a very basic salad. One of those situations where there's more quantity than quality. You're probably just eating from a 30 lbs bag of generic shredded mozzarella cheese that they buy at Costco. I also tried the personal pizza. I did like that they let you do half and half. I went with half red sauce with their house made meatballs then the other half was the bianco, a garlic and oil sauce. So again, came with a lot of cheese. The latter half of the pizza was good when fresh and hot. I would have preferred more of a garlic taste to come through/more sauce, but it wasn't bad. The meatballs though were disappointing. No flavor and dried out. Lacking sauce here as well. Service was just fine, and I did take my leftovers home, but honestly when I got home I threw them away. I opened that box and it was just such a mediocre meal that I didn't want to waste anymore calories on it. The other thing I want to note is that they are a cash only business. Like what is this 1950? I rarely ever have cash on me so luckily my friend did and I just sent them money through PayPal. Otherwise there is a cashless ATM inside you can use. So apparently you get the bill and go up to this ATM and tell it you want to withdraw $20. It gives you a receipt that you then take up to the register and they then give you any remaining cash after they deduct your bill amount from the amount you got on the ATM receipt. Sweet baby Jesus. Cut out all these steps! Also super crowded because you have booths on one side, a line of people waiting to be seated in the middle of the aisle, then the other side is the register, all of this right by the front door, too much for me. To summarize, if you are hungry with no other options and you have cash then give this place a try. The food is not bad, but to me it's not worth a second visit. If your taste buds have ever experienced a quality pizza made with fresh flavorful ingredients and not just a bland mound of cheese, you will not care for this place. read more

Good experience and good food. After hearing very positive reviews about Luigi's, I was excited to try it myself. The restaurant seems to get very busy in the evening. Luckily, I was seated right away. The atmosphere is truly Italian with beautiful painted pictures on the wall. The menu has a good amount of food on it with a nice variety. I ordered the zucchini planks with sauce as an appetizer. I was happy to see that they were not over breaded and were cut into good sizes to eat. The sauce was nothing special. For my meal I ordered the half rigatoni-half ravioli. It was more like Rigatoni with some ravioli on top. I ordered the small portion size which a decent size, but the dish was small and I immediately had pasta on the table. The dish was good, but again the sauce was nothing special. We have been wanting to try this place for a bit now but it's always so busy we haven't gotten in. We finally stopped in tonight and after a 20-minute wait, they were able to seat us at a nice booth. The Italian house salad and garlic bread with cheese are so good! We loved the meatballs and spaghetti marinara. The only super disappointing aspect was finding out that they only take cash or local check so we had to run to the local Chase ATM to get cash. This seems very dated to me and we didn't want to pay double fees to use their ATM. Would have been nice if they posted a sign on the door for those of us that hadn't previously been here. read more
