My cousin is going on a trip and she asked me to pick up some snacks from Luisa & Son because I had to give them a ride to the airport and L&S is down the street from me. So as to kill two birds with one stone, I stopped by L&S on my way to pick them up and take them to LAX. We came here to find pastillas & jeprox and found 1 of 2. The pastillas were those super processed pre-packaged ones. I was craving some Biko (rice cake) but couldn't find any here. Luisa & Son also has a location in the Bay Area (where I'm from) but never been to it. I didn't want to leave empty handed, so I got a couple items to snack on. Turon & Lumpia. Both items were served hot. Crunchy wrappings. The lumpia was stuffed with a good amount of mest and veggies. It also come with suka (vinegar). The turin had a caramel coating, holding a plantain and jackfruit. Pretty good for snacks under $5. read more

This place is one of my mom's staple Filipino bakeries. We love seeing what new treats they have! Ultimately we always get the Ensemayda with ube and the plain one too. With a very interesting history and multiple locations in the Southern California area, Luisa and Son bakery serves up a wide variety of individually wrapped Filipino bakery items for carryout. My wife, her mom, and I stopped by the Artesia location on a Saturday late morning: large selection, very crowded and busy inside, some delicious baked goods, especially their ensaimada. Luisa and Son was originally founded as a standalone restaurant in Manila in the 1950's. It was famous enough that my mother-in-law recognized it immediately, stating that it was a restaurant (not bakery) near enough to where she lived back in the home country (she immigrated in the 1960's), so wasn't sure if this was the same brand. By doing a little research, I let her know that it was: it ended up closing in 1985, and reopened in the United States in Norwalk in 1997, but this time as a bake shop. It has since expanded to 3 other locations, including this one in Artesia. Also read that due to its success, the brand re-entered the Manila market in 2010 as a bakery. As mentioned, it was super busy inside and took a while to get through the line to checkout. Everything is individually wrapped and items move fast, constantly being refreshed by harried workers. Ended up getting a variety of different baked items: Ube Ensaymada ($3.20, very good cream cheese frosting, ube bread at the bottom...one of the best ensaymadas I've had from bakeries from around here); Buko Pandan Cupcake ($2.30), Mango Mamon ($2.75), and pandesal ($4.25). This was my first time at this Luisa & Son, and I hadn't been in this area since 2020. This is a bit larger than the one in Carson, with larger refrigerators, with more baked goods, but, no Siopao(they had Siomai, but, I passed in favor of Chicken Macaroni Salad, a mini cheese cake, a day old marble mini cake, and 2 dozen chicken empanadas. The store is nicely lit, with a welcoming atmosphere. The lady behind the counter was friendly, and made sure to ask if I needed anything else(I didn't). Was in the area and my moms coworker recommended this place. Since she's Filipino, I trusted her judgment and went there! She recommended that I try their egg pie and I decided to get their ube bread as well. Parking is spacious but because there's so many popular places here, it gets crowded. The entrance to the lot was also chaotic and South St in general is crazy. This is a small store next to Cafe 86 but there were so many different Filipino food items inside. As someone that loves Ube, I was super excited to look around. I got two things: 1. Ube egg pie - 5/10 While this tasted good, not too egg-y and not too sweet, there was no taste of Ube at all. It just tasted like an egg tart that I can eat at dim sum restaurants, but bigger. Was disappointed since it was so purple but maybe it's just coloring... 2. Ube bread - 7/10 This has some taste of Ube but also not too much! It was very gorgeous and appreciated being able to taste the sweet potato yam- still $4 for 3 pieces of bread was definitely pricey. All in all, I was a bit disappointed; alas, I need to give this place another chance and try their empenadas and hopias when I'm in the area again. read more

For me, Luisa & Son was where I discovered touron and after trying touron from several other Filipino bakeries, Luisa & Son still sets the bar as the best touron in So Cal. I've tried some of the baked goodals too as I am a fan of Ube but this place is synonymous with touron for me. I did see on this visit that they have Halo Halo which I would truly next time. The first Luisa & Son started as a restaurant in Downtown Manila in the 60's. They closed in 1985 and made their U.S. debut in Norwalk in 1997. The Norwalk shop is still there in addition to three other locations in Cali. The family also brought back Luisa and Son to the Philippines in 2010. Even though I haven't been to this store, the lovely & sweet Sam B was gracious enough to bring myself & the darling Perez sisters a variety of goodies for us to try. My selections included an Ube Bar, Mango Polvoron, Pandan Polvoron, and a Buko Pandan Tart. The Polvoron is like a shortbread. I love shortbread and this had a good texture. It was buttery & crumbly when broken apart. They were both slightly sweet - combined with the texture & mouthfeel, these treats were irresistible. The Buko Pandan Tart had a buttery crust and a crunchy pandan filling. It also had nice flavor. The Ube Bar was moist, dense, and so yummy! I enjoyed them all and regret that I only took one of each. I guess I'll have to pay a visit to the bakery. I heard their Ube Ensaymadas are amazing! I also want to try the Cashew Caramel Bar. read more

This is, in general, the best traditional Filipino bakery in the area. The reason why I say general is because we like 75% of their products, which is rare, because we usually just like one or two things from restaurants. Ayo!!! Stumbled upon this small Filipino Bakery and I was blown away with the quality of the baked goods. Everything i got was sooooo good and tasted Fresh. You can tell that the products were not sitting out because the bakery was busy. I need to come back and try more things. We normally get King's Paradise cake for my wife's birthday but after the lousy service we received there last Friday, I just wasn't in a mood to support them. My daughter suggested the ube pie from Luisa so we decided to change it up this time. It turned out to be a delightful choice. I was a former customer. I used to order my eggrolls from here every time we had a potluck and even recommended to my coworkers, for the longest time. One day I did a future order and I got a phone call that I ordered for same day pickup. Number one, I never order for same day pick up. I always ordered ahead of time to ask my son to pick it up for me as I work during the day. The woman staff on the phone was the rudest person and that ended my loyalty to this place. There are other places to go and cheaper just to get the frozen ones and fry them yourself. With a business like this , customer is always right at least treat us with respect and consideration for bring an old customer. But I don't think she cares. . That woman was so impolite and rude. Fun fact - This business originated from the Philippines so you know their stuff is good. What's funny is that they only have 3 locations and 2 of them are literally across the street from each other, this being one of them. We ordered over 500 items from this spot for a funeral. They were incredibly kind and nailed our order correctly. You can imagine the coordination and making sure everything was in order. Not to mention the food was great. Some of the items we ordered included filled pandesal, ensymada, polvarone, pastillas, and chicharron. We created a food bag to go filled with goodies from the bakery and received a lot of compliments. How is it possible that I did not know of this place?!! I actually had my first taste of their Ensaymada in Hawaii when my bestie's aunt sent her box of it. She had said these were her favorite. I'm not a huge ensaymada fan because I always found them too dry from other places. That was until now. I found myself craving their salted egg ensaymada and thank god my brother lives in the area cuz guess what I did. Yup I had him bring me a dozen of different ensaymada they had. It was so moist and for me the texture of the bread was fluffy. This was the kind of ensaymada that I remember having when I visited the Philippines. Haha Good customer service or I mean friendly but slow paying since there is only one cashier and there is always a long line inside. We actually bought a lot for our mini Vacay. Everything there was good and moist! I love their ube ensaymada with cheese or their mamon's. Great for breakfast with coffee or to share with others. A "must stop" whenever I'm in Cerritos. I love their caramel bars, warm chicken empanadas, and hopias. Couple of reasons for my 4 stars: 1) The line moves slow- plan to spend at least 15-20 in line on an average day. It's been like this for years. I just accept it and practice patience. 2) I love hopias, especially with ube. I like Luisa's but I wouldn't consider theirs to be super authentic. It's missing the traditional layers of pastry which hopias are known for. The filling is delicious and full of ube flavor making it a win and worth the stop. 3) The store is tiny . Sometimes it's difficult to shop when there are too many people in line. On the plus side- They have a huge selection of different pastries and sweets as well as traditional party foods. I've been coming here for a while. I wouldn't say it is my favorite, but I hold it very near and dear to my heart. My family always comes here for little snacks after church on Sunday. I honestly feel like coming here is a test for our character after church sometimes! The service isn't kind right off the bat. You really have to ease your way into their comfort and kindness. However, when they're in a good mood, they can be nicer. Takes a few jokes with them to get there, though. I will say, I haven't been in a couple of months, so I'm not sure if that has changed. Was waiting for my order to be ready for pick-up at GBL a few steps away so I had a few minutes to kill and decided to check out Luisa's. They are definitely limiting the number of customers to 5 at any given time. Grabbed a hand basket and went for the refrigerated section to the left and started loading with pork asado buns (steamed pork buns), ube halaya (ube/taro boiled and mashed then cooked with coconut milk and sugar), ube macapuno cupcakes, fudge brownies and caramel bar. While waiting in line, I had my eyes on their buko (young coconut) and egg pies in the refrigerator near the counter with the fresh-made empanadas and hopia, these are baked native treats with the following flavors: baboy (pork), munggo (mung bean), red bean, ube (taro/purple yam). I love ube so, anything ube is the bomb for me, or so I thought until I tried their ube macapuno cupcakes. These are a hard pass for me. The fudgy brownies were more cakey and caramel bars were ok. That egg pie though, now that I can eat two slices in a minute if I am not careful. Creamy, not overly sweet, not too 'eggy' flavor, Amazingly good. I like their empanadas too. They are always a hit at our office potlucks. The pork and munggo hopia were ok. The pork asado buns were so good. I'd make the drive again just for the egg pie and pork asado buns.
