Seemed a little understaffed for lunch time. But no issue, ordered the Italian sub. I've enjoyed the sub, Italian beef, and hot dogs in the past. And I enjoyed this one too. I'd suggest one little change to make the sub even better, sliced peppeccini peppers instead of 2 full sized. Also at $14 for a sub, that's a little steep. For 5 years, I have driven past this place and wondered: how do they stay in business? Now I have my answer. This place is expensive. Ran me $45 for a burger fries and footlong sub. BUT it's actually worth it. Probably my second favorite sandwich in the valley, it has really good flavor but not overwhelming spice or sweetness. You can tell by the way it tastes that it's fresh and quality ingredients, not some frozen fast food Costco shipment they pulled out of the walk-in freezer. The vibe of the restaurant? Immaculate. Joel behind the counter was quick to offer suggestions (and upsell, which I'm glad he did) and all the staff were super friendly and attentive. This place is probably the closest you can get to Chicago in the desert. Will definitely not be another 5 years before I'm back at Luke's. read more

I used to go to Luke's consistently when I lived right near 12th St. and Indian school and during that time which was just about three years ago, the food and service was phenomenal. However, recently, you can tell the quality and care has gone down. I recently went to Luke's of Chicago to get a quick Polish Maxwell Chicago dog and it took over 30 minutes with not only me being the only person in the store but a second customer came in after me ordered more food than I did and got their food first. I asked whoever ever was behind the register on the status of my order and they kind of just shrugged it off mind you if it was busy I would understand, but there was literally just me and this other customer in the whole store. Then afterwards, once they realize they messed up and didn't even make my order they proceeded to make me wait an additional 10 minutes so now I'm at the store for almost 45 minutes to an hour waiting on one hot dog. The quality of the food has gone down as well as the veggies don't even taste fresh and the fries I received were cold after waiting for so long. I used to say come to loose of Chicago, but I can no longer recommend coming there as this was not a good experience. read more

I usually do not like Italian beef sandwiches, but I was sweet. I was talked into trying one, and I ordered the peppers and cheese, which are extra on the sandwich, with a bottle of water. It was under $20. The sandwich was phenomenal. It wasn't overseasoned. The meat was dipped in an issue before being put on what seemed like a steamed bun with roasted peppers and cheese. When I found this place it was like striking gold. Not many places in Arizona serve 'authentic' Chicago-style beef sandwiches. If you like a little spicy kick, the hot giardiniera peppers are the way to go. I always add those and love it to be dipped in the au jus gravy. Not soggy and not super dry bread...makes the sandwich extra good. The fries are delicious. Crispy on the outside, but inside texture is like that of a perfect baked potato but fried. The right amount of salt to bring out the flavor. The inside dining is all decked out with Chicago Street signage, Vienna Beef pictures, Chicago jerseys and more to give you a taste of Chicago. Had lunch with the family yesterday. Never been to Chicago so I can't speak to the authenticity of the food. Everyone seemed to enjoy the hotdogs. Myself on the other hand decided to order a burger. The hotdogs all came with fries. The burger did not. Seemed like a good presentation at first. Would not recommend. Burger was way over seasoned with toppings falling off the tiny weak bun and I was unable to eat. Bad taste. I was really looking forward to trying Luke's because I had them when I was in Chicago. I ordered the Beef with hot peppers and a Coke, which totaled almost $18.00. To be honest, I found the price to be quite high considering I can get the same for around $12.00 at Portillo's. I arrived at Luke's at 9:00 am since they open at 9:30 am. However, today the door was still closed at 9:30 am. Upon calling them, I found out that they were short-staffed by one person and would be opening at 10:00 am with no apologies offered. The hot peppers in my beef were definitely not the Chicago Style Hot Giardiniera that I was expecting. I was very disappointed, especially as at Portillo's, they always include Giardiniera. Mixed feelings about the entire experience. The owner was friendly and chatting with literally everyone else in the establishment except the 2 black guests lol. He checked on everyone else sitting down and waiting except us. I ordered the Italian beef, Chicago dog, pizza puff and sodas. It totaled to $40 which is kinda crazy for the portions. Pizza puff was good!! Chicago dog was really small for the price but very tasty! The Italian beef wasn't very good especially with this being a Chicago based establishment. Never have I been disappointed until today. Ordered the Italian beef with provolone and hot giardiniera and an Italian sub. The beef was significantly smaller than I remember but still fairly loaded. The issue I had was it didn't have a good taste. The beef seemed a little gritty texture and very small scraps of beef not larger pieces of sliced beef. I'm not sure if it had been sitting for a while in the juice or was just old off the bottom of the pot but the taste and texture were off. I was hungry and before I knew it I was about halfway done. I thought about sending it back but felt that I had passed the point and there wasn't anything else I really wanted. The Italian sub was ok but the bread really wasn't fresh and overall not something I'd order again. I'd been here many times over the years but definitely a no go this time. Today I had the worst hamburger I've had in a long time. They changed everything about their hamburger. Normal bun now and it falls apart. Sloppy mess of ketchup and mayonnaise, had to scrape a ton off. The burger was as tall as it was wide. It was burnt. One pickle, two small half slices of tomato. The guy in the back cooking looked like a wreck. What else did they change for the worst? Different buns for the Chicago dogs? Moving forward do they burn the Italian beef? This really great little Hot Dog Restaurant. There standard Chicago dog is great. Clearly they take pride in what they do here and it shows. The restaurant is very clean and the service is very professional and friendly. Also my guilty pleasure is that you can get a side of cheese sauce with your French fries which is awesome! food is ok lack seasoning. The bread was really nice it held up well for the Italian beef. I added sweet pepper and provolone cheese. the beef was not as tender as I would have liked. The peppers were just ok definitely not worth the up charge for them and the up charge was only 1.25 that is saying something. The provolone added a tad bit of salt to the sandwich. These guys were pretty good and I wanted to rate them higher, but they're crazy expensive! I got two hot dogs and a fry with a drink and it was just under $19. They got their Chicago dogs right, I just wish you didn't need a loan to go there and eat. These guys are more expensive than Portillo's and not as good. Their fries were a little bland and I had a co-worker that got their onion rings and said the same thing about them. Also, I don't think they steam their buns. The first hot dog I ate started falling apart about half way through because the bun was a little harder. I didn't have that problem with the second one, so maybe just an oddball with that one? I love the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) signs in the dining area and immediately got nostalgic when I saw the bus stop sign of my former commute. On my way home from the Downtown VA hospital, passed by Luke's and remembered how much I enjoyed their food in Tucson. Ordered a hot dog, which came with fries, and a pound of Italian beef to go. Ate the dog while driving home. Average. Fries were not crisp, or hot. Disappointed. The reason for the 4 star rating is the delicious beef. Heated up in crock pot with the juice they supplied, on a fresh baguette, outstanding. Service, at the counter was marginal at best. No friendliness or appreciation for the business whatsoever. Wow, I cannot believe there's still a Luke's of Chicago opened in Phoenix, but I'm very happy they are. Our family enjoys that other Chicago hot dog place on Shea and in the Tempe Marketplace. Luke's use to have an outpost off Northsight and Raintree, but closed up after Portillo's opened. But Luke's just seems slightly more genuine and less commercial. No french movie posters hanging from the ceiling, or old kids bicycles. Just some very dated photos of Soldier Field on the walls and old CTA signs. I tried their Italian Beef Combo ($10.00) and you could taste all the ingredients that went into the Gravy. The beef itself seemed good, but maybe a little too much time in the aus jus. Anyway, it was pretty good. Definely would order it again. Prices are somewhat higher, as compared to that other Chicago place, but... But I'll let you decide on which one tastes better. But for now, when I'm in the area, I'll be stopping in for a taste of old Chicago. Expect to spend $10 to $13, depending on how hungry you are. read more
