This charming little place opened recently in the Centrum near Home Depot, in that shopping center that felt like a wasteland after some of its shops and restaurants closed. With Super G's opening and Lula's not far away, things are looking up there. Lula's, at least to us, was a step up from Crispy Banh Mi closer in quality to Li's, on the other side of the city from us. We ordered the pork belly and the grilled pork, along with summer rolls, and they were very generously portioned, freshly made and fresh tasting, and to my thinking crazy reasonable in price. We went specifically for the sandwiches but I could see, based on the summer rolls alone, that the rest of their offerings - bun mainly - are worthy of trying. But let me pause a moment to write an ode to their coffee. Vietnamese coffee is my Achilles heel. I typically order it as dessert because it's too sweet for my regular consumption. Lula's, however, serves a tall, delightfully rich Vietnamese coffee so tasty I would have ordered a second if I hadn't been concerned about caffeine that late. We didn't try their pastries, though they did appeal. Like Anthony Bordain, Vietnamese is my favorite cuisine. Lula's is a welcome addition to a growing selection of Asian food in Charlotte, and I wish them well. I only regret they aren't on my way to work. The little eatery is pushing out some delicious authentic Vietnamese food. We ordered so much. I just took a trip back to a night market in Hanoi and never left Charlotte. Really good Banh Mi here. Got delivery, a grilled pork sandwich. Wow! It was delicious! The filling was excellent, the carrot/daikon mix quite tasty, I asked for extra cilantro and jalapeños (not really extra of either). I came on a Sunday right before 1pm and there was no line, but by the time I was done eating, it was packed with customers. There were a lot of Vietnamese customers which is a good sign! Today I got the beef stew (a favorite) and something new for me, the lemongrass tofu. Now when I tell you the tofu was bursting with flavor, I'm not lying. By far my favorite thing on the menu now. I have visited Lula on several occasions since they first opened and have tried quite a few of the menu items. This is a quaint and very cute casual eatery with a picture-worthy mural inside. They have traditional Banh Mi sandwiches as well as an assortment of boba teas and bakery items. Keep in mind that there are only about 4 bar seats inside and two small tables outdoors. A few of my favorite items: * Their lemongrass tofu with vermicelli is always fresh and flavorful. Don't skimp on the fish sauce, it's so good. * The pâté chaud is addicting and crispy with a tasty pork filling. * The mini cheesecakes are absolutely delicious, creamy, and not overly sweet. * The Banh mi sandwiches are good. I haven't tried them all but the baguette is so soft and fluffy. They're pretty big sandwiches, which I don't mind at all. * The egg rolls are perfectly crisp and come with a sweet chili sauce - I love them! Always enjoy viet food, especially when it comes to Banh Mi! First off, the inside is small and is almost meant to take your orders to-go, but there are a few seats inside as well as just a couple of tables outside the establishment if you want to eat your food for here. The menu has a variety of banh mi as well as some other Vietnamese staples (noodle dishes, stew, rolls, etc.) I would normally order a cold cut classic, but I'm a sucker when it comes to the pork belly. If you haven't tried a banh mi with crispy pork belly, I think you are missing out. The meat is cut to smaller bite size pieces making it easier to eat it. Something about the seasoning in this pork belly makes it really good in a banh mi. There's also a generous portion of pickled daikon and carrots too. I prefer mine with extra cucumber and cilantro, so I'll be sure to order that next time. The peppers I think are pickled? Which is different for me. Not bad to say the least, but I personally prefer the fresh kind. Next is the noodle dish with grilled pork and egg rolls. For $12, I think this is a pretty generous portion. You can tell this was pretty fresh cause the egg rolls were super hot as if they came straight out of the fryer. The seasoning of the pork was nice too. This is a staple for me, cause I do enjoy this particular noodle dish as well. Overall, great experience and the owners are really nice too. The pate chaud is mouthwatering delicious. Seriously one of the best bites I've had in a long time. It's a puff pastry filled with ground pork. It was flaky, buttery and savory. It reminded me of a sausage roll but with Vietnamese flavors. They had run out of noodles so I switched to fried rice. The serving was big enough for two. And every bite was delicious. I wish I could rate this place higher but due to the reception I received from the young male employee, this as high as I felt comfortable with. My problem is not with the food,which was fabulous nor with the young Lady, Katelyn N who was so gracious and helpful with my order. As stated, the problem was with the young man whose name I didn't get. When I asked to have my half full ice tea topped off, I was told I would be charged for a full glass. Ok, so would you please put some water over my tea and add some ice. My glass was returned with no ice and instructions to add the water myself from the container on the sidebar. Lula's is definitely my favorite place to get banh mi around the Charlotte area!
