The most concise description I can give this experience is CULINARY DISSONANCE. We were really enthused to try this place given the reviews and fine dining is this neck of the woods is not common. Let me set the stage with the cost for two people, only one ordering cocktails, $108 before tip and taxes. We sat down at a shabby-sheek/ french country looking table....ok, that's cute, it's the mountains..... with no linens or place mat.....we were handed our utensils wrapped in paper napkins the likes of which you would find at a drive-thru or a mom and pop 6 seater restaurant. We were handed menu's, and given water....waitress spun or her heel and left, no drink order taken nor "I'll give you more time to look over the drink menu." (we were the only ones in there at this point.). We ordered the fried green tomatoes as an app, husband had a house salad with housemade asian dressing, I ordered the duck (no request on temperature so assumption was medium rare as is typical) with bok choy stirfry, husband had the shrimp etoufee and fried trout. Sauce on fried green tomatoes was bland but tomatoes tasted good and seemed hand breaded, housemade dressing on salad was good and salad was seemed fresh, duck was the color of the "skin" on a barbie doll/definitely not MR and chewy, vegetables were so heavily coated in soy/terriyaki I honestly couldn't taste them..... not what I was expecting or hoping for with the special. Duck is tricky/requires technique, but if you are going to put it on your menu, it's a reasonable expectation you can prepare and present it well. If you have it often, you know what I'm talking about. My husband said the shrimp and trout was good but not great. The two stars were for the craft cocktails, whomever made them was a brilliant mixologist! It stands to reason we did not order dessert. Going out to eat for many folks, from all walks of life, is special and I don't know, nor have I met, anyone that likes to waste hard-earned money, whether they have alot or a little. With that being said, consider this a cautionary tale if you take your money seriously and care whether you feel satisfied after a meal. I won't even get into diner attire and etiquette, the chef and his or her staff can't be held responsible for that, but know if you're also concerned about overall experience, it's a crap shoot, don't expect folks who can spend $100 on a meal to be dressed commensurately (meaning with reasonable appropriateness). If you are able and willing to spend that kind of money or more on a culinary experience, I suggest ILDA at the other end of the block. read more

I never post reviews but the food here warrants it. It is hands down the best food in Sylva. The quality was impeccable, the portions were very balanced. I ordered the mixed grill and my partner had the Sticky Asian ribs with a French onion soup appetizer. Everything was a 10/10. Absolute perfection. A little quirky restaurant, we had a mixed experience, the meatloaf got rave reviews, the pork loin special was greatly appreciated, the surf and turf kabob the steak was a little dry and the potatoes a bit cold, and then the grouper. I live in metro Atlanta and Covid ruined my vacation. Instead of Florida, my husband and I found ourselves headed north to trout fish (not a bad substitute vacation!). We were going to stay in Cherokee but failure to plan on our part led to finding a hotel in Sylva instead. From there we found Lulu's. Holy moly it was divine providence!!! The food- AMAZING. The flavors and freshness are palpable. We had an apetizer of pork pot stickers with kimchi. It was the perfect combination of sweet and spicy and salty, with the doughy dumplings and fresh kimchi and vegetables on a garnishment of sauce. It was surprising quality and flavor for such a tiny town. The main course- I had lemon chicken piccata and my husband had surf and turf. I could elaborate about how amazing it all was, but I'll just say "GO". Try for yourself. You'll be amazed at what you found in small town usa. (Our waitress wasn't Aliyah and she was attentive without hovering, engaged without being artificial... she made our experience incredible.) We asked about local trout fishing, and she found someone from the kitchen staff knowledgeable with local waters to come talk to us. He then went to grab a map for us from a kiosk just outside the building!! Who does that??? To say we were amazed is an understatement. We had a lovely fajita mixture with veggies, chicken, beef and tofu for the Bride and Groom and vegetarian guests. Presentation was lovely, food was hot and delicious!! Professionalism all around and the guests really enjoyed it! We were given 3 choices in the beginning for catered meal: all sounded delicious, but we chose Mexican. Best DANG Restaurant ate at in a while!! Great prices, great diversity in the menu, and amazing quality of food and preparations:) Father and Son Business done right!! A real gem in the community and the NC STATE!!! My beau and I went after a solid hike in Blue Ridge Mountains and were very hungry and thirsty. We just left Asheville for a little getaway since we love good food and quaint towns... this town and food didn't disappoint. I used to work in the restaurant industry so I'm not enthusiastic to go out during a holiday weekend esp during covid, but Lulu's on Main was a real delight!!!:). Mouth watering experience!! Before my husband and I even left for our trip to the Smoky Mountains, I looked up restaurants that may be open for dine-in due to the virus. Lulu's on Main was one of them and from the looks of the menu, I was SOLD! We ordered the spring rolls and fried green tomatoes with a crab remoulade as an appetizer and both were fabulous!! I ordered the veggie bowl with peanut sauce and added grilled chicken to it...OMG delicious!! So much to eat packed into the bowl, I took half of it with me! My husband ordered a sandwich that had grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, and capers on it with a sauce and he said it was fabulous!! I definitely recommend trying this quaint place for lunch or dinner. I would drive out of the way to eat there again for sure!! We read the reviews about lulu's and knew that we wanted to check it out for dinner. We were very pleased! Drove from Waynesville to Sylva and enjoyed a delicious meal. We were seated right away and overall the Service was prompt and friendly. French onion soup was great. Mushroom appetizer was unique and I couldn't get enough of the cilantro curry sauce that accompanied. Ordered the mixed grill for main meal and it was delicious. Portions were huge! Everything was cooked to perfection and seasoned just right. The atmosphere and vibe are fantastic and we have already talked about returning and bringing our adult daughters with us. It is also very awesome that they have several vegetarian and gluten-free options. Glad we drove to Sylva for dinner tonight! :) read more

I have been a very long time fan of lulu's forever. Full disclosure I have only visited about three times in the past four years. Which is a change from almost daily in the late 90s. Tonight i ordered the rib eye special with a garlic truffle butter. It came with this amazing side of roasted creamed corn and cauliflower. It was transplendant. I can't say enough good things about Lulu's on Main in Sylva. The restaurant itself is spacious and airy, yet also feels cozy at the same time. I had a hard time making a choice about what to order for lunch because there were so many tasty sounding options. I settled on the Mick's Meatloaf Patty Melt and was not disappointed. It seriously may be one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The staff was friendly, efficient and accommodating. What a lovely surprise Lulu's on Main was! We had to be in Waynesville,NC unexpectedly for a couple of weeks. We are very hesitant about Covid and in Florida (where we live) have only eaten at outdoor restaurants. So mostly, we ate at the home we were staying, but had read great things about Lulu's and saw they had outdoor seating, so we decided to check it out. We caught the tail end of the lunch crowd and so most of the tables were getting ready to clear out when we arrived. There was only an indoor table available, but not only was it quite socially distanced, but they have doors separating the tables-- so it's kind of like you are in your own booth with really tall barriers between you and the next table. The doors are painted really pretty and it makes you feel like you are in a safe, cozy cocoon. We started by splitting the Thai noodle soup. The flavor was great-- I believe it was a coconut milk base, a little peanut-y and I believe, a little turmeric. It could have used more vegetables (just a couple of red pepper strips). But we purposely ordered this to take home and I was able to make two more noodle bowls out of it by adding broccoli and carrots and it was excellent both times, not suffering at all from being re-heated. It included a lot of chicken, so the protein was plenty for this purpose. Our real meals were the phrench dip and the chicken piccata sandwich. The meat in the French dip was much better quality that is typical and the bread (which is make or break for a French dip sandwich) was excellent. The jus appears to have been the base for their French onion soup, so a little more onion forward than my Husband prefers, but still delicious. The chicken in my piccata sandwich was friend and so good! There was a smear of mashed potatoes, which was texturally nice and a light caper butter drizzle. I squeezed a lemon on it and it really brightened up the flavors. I hate to overuse the term "elevated", but these sandwiches were definitely that-- common ingredients, but just made better through the cooking and especially, the chef's creativity. We cannot wait to go back to Lulu's the next time we head back to the Waynesville/Sylva area. read more

It's been almost a year now since Ive been to Lulu's, this was also my first visit to the restaurant. It was a pretty slow day, there were three of us in our party, and two other couples. The food was ok however our waitress was not. We all ran out of water (remember not busy so this shouldn't have happened) she wasn't all that friendly either. We had talked about if we should tip her or not but my friend is super sweet and still gave her a generous tip. I'm doing this review not because of the food or the waitresses attitude, I'm warning people to make sure you double check your bank statements to make sure what you put on the receipt is what was taken from your account. Our waitress apparently thought my friend tip wasn't enough and gave herself an additional $25.00. So please no matter where you go always check your accounts to make sure this doesn't happen to you. read more

They even have Paella on the menu-- I had the chicken tikka masala (just like Indian tandoori) my son said, "the short ribs & said were the best ever!" -- Greg had chicken piccata which was delicious .... all in all GREAT DINING EXPERIENCE!! Another cool place to go in what is a strangely hip downtown Sylva. Lulus has good food. Had lunch there and was not immediately stunned by the menu...lots there...not lots jumping out at me. A mix of italian, greek, and something else I couldn't place. A very popular place with the locals. Nearly filled up for lunch and its a big space. I almost gave this a three but the food and service were both great. Friendly staff, fast, and my portobello pita sandwhich, while sounding "eh" was really delicious. Very disappointed in our last visit. We have usually enjoyed the food and service. This weekend was awful. The meatloaf dish was bland. There was no flavor. The service left a great deal to be desired. Our waitress never refilled my water glass. She asked if I wanted another beer and I said no but more water please. Nothing. When it came time to pay the bill, she took our card and we waited almost 15 minutes as she stood at the register and talked to others. We live in Sylva and look to this place as a go to for a good meal, not anymore. read more
