Although my mom loves this restaurant, the lunch plate I ordered didn't taste very good. Sorry, mom, but I thought it was downright awful. I grew up in Hawaii where Chinese food, even Chinese-American food, is much closer to authentic. The standard for Asian food is pretty high with the huge Asian communities that call Hawaii home so my review can't help but be based on a comparison to all the many Chinese meals I've been fortunate to have enjoyed at (at least) 30 Chinese restaurants, both hole-in-the-wall, Chinese-American, as well as high end authentic Chinese restaurants. Although the server was fantastic, quick, friendly, and provided iced water and hot tea along with being cheerful and quick, the food was pretty bad. The pork fried rice was awful, both the flavor, texture, and it's lack of ingredients. It appeared to be seasoned with soy sauce and something sweet, with no meat or vegetables in it except for a tablespoon of sliced ham or cold cut meat that was placed atop the rice. I swear to you I can make pork fried rice that is 100% better, and I am no culinary wonder. They should start with a base of chopped onion at the very least. I don't like it but I understand the batter fried chicken and shrimp in sweet red sauce which would have greater appeal to non-Asian palates. However, the chicken chow mein was so foreign looking that when it was placed in front of me, I asked my mom what it was! I really thought i had been given the wrong item. Where was my mein?? There was a layer of dried, deep fried noodles that looked identical to La Choy's crispy noodles, topped with stir fry vegetables in a mild tasting sauce. The veggies and sauce were okay but when I order mein, which means noodles in Chinese, I really was expecting fresh, not crunchy deep fried or possibly canned, noodles. Very sad face. I'll give Lum Yuen another try and order completely different items and hope for the best and maybe be able to update this review. I feel a little more educated about Chinese fare in Salem. Maybe this is the norm here and I'll grow to like it? Nope, don't think so but at least not be bitterly disappointed? DO NOT eat here if you have dietary restrictions. Their menu does not tell you everything that's in the dish. And they are not able to accommodate for that on their own. The restaurant is clean, the service was good. I actually really liked our server a lot. She was friendly and helpful and tried hard to fix the issues we were having. She is the only reason I gave this experience 2 stars instead of 1. Unfortunately, what she's working with is a hot mess. I ordered a combo meal with Chicken Chowmein instead of the listed Pork Chowmein because I do not eat pork. The first attempt came with big chunks of pork. She took it back and got me a new one pretty quickly. Except that this one still had little tiny bits of pork. Turns out they make their Chowmein base with those little bits of pork and then just toss whatever other meat is ordered in with it and put it on a plate. So my whole plate was saturated with Pork, which I can not eat. I ate the few pieces of almond chicken that I could and waited for her to come back again. The server did take the whole meal off of my bill, and she brought me more food at no charge with extra spring rolls, and she did make the kitchen create a dish of Chowmein fresh from scratch WITHOUT the pork that they make the "on hand" dish with that she brought to me in a take-out container because we were ready to go by then. She was *so* apologetic and really did her best to try to make it right. I left her a big tip. No one ever thought about the fact that if someone specifically asks for no pork, that they out to TELL people that there is no way to get Chowmein without it. And since Chicken Chowmein is actually listed on the menu, they need to list that it's a chicken and pork combo. If it doesn't LIST pork o the menu, they ought not to be using it.... They need to make it clear that even NON pork dishes will have pork in it by nature. As great as the server was, she was still unaware of what's actually in the dishes and it doesn't make up for the fact that the restaurant itself isn't to be trusted. We got the number 4 dinner and the vegetables were crisp and colorful, pork fried rice had a lot of flavor and was moist, sweet and sour pork was also crisp and came with plenty of sauce. And I have had shrimp all over the USA. What shrimp there was hiding in the tempura batter was dry like half rubber half leather. Could not eat it. Just threw it away. Building and Location: Good location, good amount of parking. Older building but main lobby and dining room appears to be kept clean. Service Review: Great service, the waitress was warm and friendly, attentive to our needs, and the food came out quickly. Food Review: Delicious BBQ Pork, the marinade penetrates deeply into the fine grain meat that is cut very thinly yet very moist. It's served with hot red and yellow sauces. The Crab Puffs are delicious with lots of cream cheese filling. The fried chicken chunks used for Sweet and Sour Chicken etc. are also very good, quality chicken breast is used and the breading isn't too heavy. The egg flour soup is decent, they do put a lot of egg in it. Sweet and sour sauce is very good. Fried rice was very tasty, the kernels were not too hard or fluffy. Pork chow mien has a nice taste to it if you like bean sprouts and vegetable medley. Pot stickers were average - their chili oil was not very good, barely any chili in it and the oil was most likely old. Final Thoughts: Will definitely come back again, need to try more dishes. Wow, just wow..... about 6 months ago I put a negative review after several bad encounters and I was looking to see if may e they have improved their service to find that my review is gone. I get served food multiple times that makes me physically ill even after divulging allergies and still have to pay for food we didn't order? Not ok at all. This happened twice. The final straw was when I ordered to pork fried rice plates and 2 soups for pickup for my sick husband and they said it was fine that it would take me a little bit to get there because I live across town. By the time I got there it was 2 mins past closing because I got lost in the dark and they wouldn't let me in or sell me the food that they had already made and packaged up. I called multiple.times before someone finally picked up to which the owner told the girl I was late so I wouldn't be getting the food. OK whatever.... I've o ly been working i. Food service for 20 years so I KNOW this person is just being an asshole. I hung up annoyed but was still pleasant to the girl on the phone. I proceeded to order from a Chinese food place that was closer to home and was about to leave the parking lot here when lo and behold the owner had the girl call me back and say that he was willing to sell me the food now, after I had been sitting there looking for a new place. Went to Lum-Yuen for lunch with my cousin on the recommendation of a local businessperson. As it was my first visit, I queried our waitress about the menu - which was fairly small for lunch - and I learned that I could have a dinner menu item prepared as if it were a lunch menu item, which I took advantage of. I found Lum-Yuen to be a clean, nicely decorated restaurant. I had ordered my dish extra spicy, and our server offered to have another dish made if it wasn't spicy enough. Although it wasn't as spicy as I had hoped, the flavor was very good, and both of our dishes were substantial in size - we both needed boxes for leftovers. But my rating is for quality, not quantity. Looking forward to a return visit. Feb 2018: Been back several times since my first visit, never had a bad meal. Their Hot & Sour soup is excellent - highly recommended. This has always been my all-time favorite Chinese place (Kwan's was a very close 2nd but sadly Mr. Kwan passed and it sits closed) and have missed it horribly since I moved up to Washington. So obviously I HAD to eat here while I was visiting over the weekend.I heard that ownership had changed so naturally I was nervous about what had become of my beloved Lum-Yuen. Well, I'm pleased to report that's it's still just as good as I remembered! Their Won Ton soup is easily the best I've had; the broth is hearty and rich, not like that clear, watered down stuff you usually see around. The bbq pork is cut nice and thick and SO sweet, soft and chewy, almost like candy. The pork fried rice is so yummy, and the sweet n sour chicken was perfectly crispy and fresh. I've had a lot at other places where the chicken was overdone, tough, poor quality but this isn't at all. My only complaint food-wise is the almond chicken that came with my combo plate. They gave me a HEAPING portion that I didn't finish because it was mostly celery and onions, very, VERY little chicken. Basically just the inside of a chicken pot pie but if you took out 90% of the chicken and threw some shaved almonds in. Maybe if you're a person who's all about celery you'd like it since the flavor is a bit overpowering but I don't really like celery at all so this really disappointing.That being said the portions of everything else were generous and I left with a very full tummy so this wasn't enough to ruin my whole experience or anything. When I lived in Salem, this was my "go-to" Chinese restaurant. It's been around forever and for a good reason: they consistently deliver piping hot, delicious fare. We came here so often that the waitresses knew our order! The other reviews mentioned that the food is "Americanized"...so be it! To me, it's comforting, Chinese soul food and bless them for that. They use fresh ingredients including all white chicken meat. Their fried rice is still the best I've eaten. I was so happy to see that my favorite combination dish, #6, was still on the menu. It includes "parchment chicken" which is a wonderful treat. Sure, the décor is a bit kitschy and their location isn't chichi, but they aren't trying to be. It's working-class and proud of it. Lum-Yuen serves up quality and quantity. The waitresses have always been friendly and professional. When I am in town again, I'm making a beeline to Lum-Yuen and ordering my combination #6. read more

But I was hungry and in Salem, so I decided to give it a try. The service was excellent for a typical Chinese restaurant and the place was clean. I looked at the menu for quite some time, not knowing what to order. I'm not a fan of deep fried meat, tossed in sticky sauce (which is typical for most Chinese-American restaurants). I asked the server for suggestions and she told me to order the Shrimp Chow Yuk (Shrimp cooked with assorted vegetables). It was mostly healthy and delicious. My husband and I were looking for "Chinese" food without having to leave the house. Sadly we live in a North Salem food desert where no one delivers. So we settled on Lum Yuen, which is only a couple minutes' drive from us. I will say this for them: They were very helpful and easy to understand on the phone, which you don't always get from Chinese restaurants. I ordered my old standby, sweet and sour chicken, and my husband ordered his, Szechuan crispy beef. The beef wasn't bad. I'd call it slightly above average for that dish. No veggies, though. More on that in a minute. The sweet and sour was awful. The chicken was Salty with a capital S. I don't know if they accidentally knocked the salt shaker into the batter or what. Couple that with a sauce that was one-note (all sweet, no sour--basically corn syrup and red food coloring), and the combined result was borderline inedible. I feel bad describing something as both overwhelmingly salty and utterly bland, but there you go. And I usually love Americanized Chinese food. I've noticed that the Chinese places in Salem don't include veggies with any of their fried dishes. Is that a Northwest thing? Everywhere else I've lived in the U.S. (east of the Rockies) puts some combination of bell pepper, onion, carrot and pineapple into sweet and sour dishes. We'll keep trying new places, but for now I have to declare Panda Express the best Chinese food in Salem. How sad. read more

We ordered last night, dinner to-go. It was super easy! I just went to their website and ordered off there just like you would shop online. I really appreciated this option. I sent my husband out and he was back very quickly with our food. :) We ordered the chicken lo mein, fried shrimp, szechwan beef, bbq pork fried rice and steamed rice.
