Last night I went to Lum Yuen with a medium sized group--always a challenge for a restaurant. We were seated at two large round tables in a huge room used for parties. We were comfortable but the noise level was loud, with several other groups as well as ours. Hard to hear across the table. I ordered Sichuan Beef and my portion was large and delicious. All others at my table raved about their food and each portion was double what you might expect. We each took portions home. Two or three of us ordered gin and tonics--a simple drink available worldwide. When they arrived, they had been made with soda, not tonic. We returned them but the waitress was unable to get us new ones with tonic. She said the hoses had been hooked up incorrectly. So--good food, huge portions, noisy atmosphere, and less-than-perfect bar! Guess it depends on what's important to you! read more

Very Americanized Chinese food. Found it to be pretty bland and the menu is somewhat odd & limited. The lunch specials are pretty cheap but this is just below even mediocre Chinese. This place was recommended to us and we were tired and hungry after a long weekend. Good lawd. Service was great. We got some fried shrimp and some chow mein and some sweet and sour pork. The chow mein was a plate of veggies...all good...on some of those crunchy noodles in a can you sometimes get in asian salads. Um.....what....oh and they were soggy because of the sauce. Not appetizing at all. They should have just left those scant crunchy things off the plate. So the noodle dish had no actual noodles. The fried shrimp had that old freezer taste and the actual shrimp inside had not been cleaned. So they came from a cheap box and were dug out of a freezer. Gross. The same was true of the sweet and sour pork. So the only thing that was edible was the noodless chow mein once you picked out the soggy crunchy things you get in a can. This has to be the single worst Chinese food experience I've had in Oregon. read more

Love the food, always fresh & hot & delicious. Portions are huge, I always being home enough leftovers for a second meal. The service is exceptional. wow, it felt so good to wait for over an hour for food that we ultimately didnt get. it was busy on christmas eve, and that was expected. after an hour after appetizers were served, and the dining room had cleared out, we asked about our entrees. we were graciously informed that to go orders had the higher priority, and our entrees had not been started yet. i am so grateful that this establishment makes sure that to go orders are more important than in house diners, and really went out of their way to make that clear to us diners. its also really nice that when diners call to ask about said priorities, that we are met with hostility and lies. thank goodness such an establishment exists for fun holiday outings!!! thank you lum yuen for an unforgettable holiday experience. i wish i could rate your entrees, but we never recieved them. read more

I brought my family visiting from Alaska to give this restaurant a try and we were all disappointed. The food was very bland, over-fried, greasy and did not taste fresh. On top of that, the waitress brought out the wrong plate to my mom, and the waitress argued with her that this plate was indeed what she had ordered. My mom asked her to double check the menu and the waitress came back out and told us she had brought out the wrong plate, and did not even apologize for the mix up. All 6 of us could not finish our plates, it was just not good food (we ordered 3 different combo plates, sesame chicken, and chicken fried rice). Avoid this restaurant! read more

I remember eating at Lums when I was a little girl. It was down Portland road further back in a tall old building back then. All these years later it is still the only chinese food place I take family from out of town. I have tried over the years, out of curiosity, to try other chinese food places which cost me money and never did I find anywhere even remotely as good, don't even get me started on the time I tried a new place and bit into a fried shrimp that tasted like a hot steaming fart ugh why did I even try. The food at Lum Yuen is outstanding. The batter used on fried shrimp or sweet n sour dishes is awesome! It is not greasy and has this incredible flavor taste to it, not to over powering. The fried rice options are all perfectly made with a light brown soy sauce nutty color and flavor and the right amount of veggies and meats mixed in depending on which one you ordered. The egg Foo young is spot on, if you like egg Foo then go now. They have sizzling platters that Ive seen them bring out that look so good and every person in the restarant looks over and wonders hmmm why didnt I order that? Of course the never-ending pots of tea are fun and taste great. Even the fortune cookies are better here than other places, they are fresh with a hint of vanilla. The Mooshu pork is divine, the generals chicken you just die and go to heaven. I never can choose between the world's best egg flower soup or the wonton soup both are so silky and are deep level broths, if that makes sense. Oh lest I forget the Parchment chicken WOW, it's a must order appetizer ,they are foil pouches of chicken that have been marinated in some kind of tamari and rice wine marinad that is addicting, they are lIke little chicken presents. The combo plates are huge and priced well. They have family style dinners which are higher priced but I've went with 6 people and ordered family dinners for 2 and still had left overs, these dinners are a fun way to try several dishes at once with apps and soup, very worth it. You have to try the lemon chicken it is chicken pounded out and lightly battered and fried with a fresh tasting lemon sweet n sour sauce poured over it served on a bed of lettuce, it's unusual and will make your mouth really happy. I want to shout out to the employees there because this is an old building in a questionable area but it is super clean! I look when I go into a restaurant, I mean I look at ceilings, walls, bathrooms, under tables, and floors. I check for build up of years of finger prints and unclean floorboards cuz if they aren t scrubbing floor boards then be warned. If you look at a restaurant and see a ceiling vent with 15 years of gunky dust build-up and floor boards that havent been scrubbed that tells me that the kitchen where the food is prepped would be on an episode of Kitchen Nightmares, basically if a restaurant is dirty out front where you can see then just imagine how gross it is where you cannot see. At Lum Yuens I was pleasantly surprised for such an old building, it didn't matter where I looked it was really clean and I expected some amount of at least greasy finger prints but not a single one. Spotless actually, even areas where the building is just dated and older it is as clean as it can be. Not even any finger prints on the glass by the cash register, no grease spots on the wood, lobby area was super clean, the ceilings weren't dirty. The workers here clean this place very very well because I'm picky, I worked in kitchens in my life and I worked very hard to have a pristine kitchen and now I can tell walking into a restaurant if the workers and management care and at Lum Yuens they care and they work hard and I appreciate that and appreciate the wonderful food. Okay, so the good things first. The service is great, very friendly staff instant service, and always with a smile. And now the bad. The food is just awful. It's bland. Lacking spice even when asking for extra spice, and very greasy. Even when you order a meal with veggies, they're greasy and seem once frozen or canned- not fresh. I've always thought this place was dirty, but I assumed that was just my mind because of how dated the location is. Well, last two times I came in there were little sugar ants all over the table. The first time, the lovely young lady said "oh my god gross!" And moved me to a different table. Last time I went, (forgetting about the ants last time) the table had a solid black lime from the seam in the wallpaper to the sugar. I pointed it out, the person this time just used an already dirty damp rag, cleaned some up (made them go ALL OVER the table) then asked if I was ready. I left. Won't be back again. read more

I had a wonderful lunch again here today. They have new carpets, new chairs, re-stained and resurfaced the tables but same old friendly staff. The food is still iffy depending on what you order but for the most part its pretty good. The egg drop soup is the best in town now that The Dragon is no longer in business (switched owners). My only critique is that you shouldn't get the sweet and sour chicken because the sauce is hot but the chicken is cold in the center. So let me preface this by saying that we are visiting family from Hawaii and have access to amazing and authentic Chinese food at home. So we came here for a family birthday dinner...and tried to order some of our favorites. When our order came it was not at all what we expected. So if you're used to authentic Chinese don't show up here expecting any. But when we didn't like our dish both the waitress and the owner did their best to try and give us the dish we were trying to order. And they came damn close. I am not giving them 5 stars because this is the best Chinese I've ever had...but their service was excellent and the food was pretty good. Americanized...but still very tasty. I am OK with the food here but what I'm not OK with is the blond woman behind the counter. Every time she is rude and extremely unpleasant. I always try to talk to the young brunette who I'm assuming waits tables. For some reason the older blond lady is extremely rude to the other lady and it makes me extremely uncomfortable. And I'm talking like full eyerolls and sighing and snapping. And yo top of all off even when I call the blond lady answers the phone and she's rude on there too! Who is this woman and why does she even have a job there. I feel so bad for that young girl. read more

I worked at Lum Yuen as a busboy over 20 years ago and they still remember who I am when I go there for lunch or dinner since they are so close to where I live. They felt like a small group of friends that always remember your name. Just as I remember when I was young, their service is consistent and the food always comes out quickly and hot, while being decently priced. I tend to get the Sweet and Sour Chicken with double Pork Fried Rice (although I do enjoy the diced almond chicken the meal comes with, it makes terrible leftovers.) I've tried nearly everything on their menu and most is really good. Stay away from the fried shrimp because of the over-breading. Overall, there is nothing too spectacular about Lum Yuen, but nothing that makes it a place to avoid. The food is great, they make custom orders, the staff is always friendly and the place is relatively clean. They recently did some renovations and put in some new kitchen equipment. They were closed for a couple of days and my life was a little sadder because of it. But the changes they made were worth it. read more

I used to like this place a lot but not so much. We are not going to go back unfortunately. Their sweet & sour chicken for pick-up order is always soggy because they drown the chicken pieces in their sweet & sour sauce, when they really should just serve the sauce in a separate container. Their fried rice is not even fried, it's steam rice and i don't like steam rice. Many times when we pick up our orders they always make mistakes and either forget an items, or give us something we did not order. They don't seem to double check. That really makes me furious especially when i find out they didn't give me what i asked and paid for and i am back home and it's too late to return it. read more

We've been on the lookout for good Chinese food since we moved here five years ago. We finally tried this place on Saturday night. There were three of us. We ordered potstickers, moo shu pork with pancakes, hunan shrimp, kung pao chicken and chow mein. The service was very friendly, and the food came out pretty quickly. The potstickers were out of this world. I was expecting chow mein that looked and tasted more like Panda Express, but this was very different, and it's not the first time I've ordered chow mein and been disappointed in other restaurants Not sure if I am ordering the wrong thing so I need to do some research LOL I was not a fan. The hunan shrimp was a bit fishy, but all the other dishes were delicious and we will definitely be back. The atmosphere was good, with a booth that was pretty private. But since this place is a bit of a drive for us, we probably won't be back.
