Should have read reviews before going.. it was disgusting .. sesame chicken had no sauce and when I asked why there was no sauce they said to use the little red sauce container witch is the spicy sauce for bbq pork . Waste of 24 bucks threw it in the trash. The rice was not fried and it was over cooked and soggy and had a brown look to it like they cooked it in soy sauce to give it appearance of it being fried.. the egg roll had jelly in it not fresh. I ate here for the first time today. The waitress was friendly and attentive and refills on my soft drink came quickly and without having to ask for refills. It was also apparent this restaurant has a local following as the waitress was chatting very amiably with a group of what appeared to be locals (I'm not) and greeted some by name. I ordered a bowl of Won Ton soup, an egg roll and the three meat Lo Mein. The egg roll - it was hard to recognize what was in the egg roll and the flavor was bland at best. Furthermore, the roll appeared heavy on the wrap. Not recommended at all. I love Won Ton soup and this soup was a bit difficult to love. Kudos to the waitress for knowing exactly the size of the three bowls, but the soup, while appearing to look very good, wasn't. The won tons themselves weren't bad - not overcooked or anything like that and had plenty of contents and had good flavor. It was the the broth in the soup that was almost flavorless. I ended up putting a fair amount of salt, pepper and soy sauce in just to give it some flavor. Had this broth had a rich flavor, I'd rate this soup fairly high. But not to be. Last and certainly not least was the three meat Lo Mein. Had I just ordered this dish, I'd probably rate this restaurant at least a star higher or possibly more. There was a good mix of noodles, vegetables and meat. The dish was not excessively greasy and had a good flavor. Let me put it this way, it was good enough that I got a take-out box for what I didn't eat. So overall, based on what I've seen, this restaurant is okay, but I've definitely had better. There are some dishes that appear to be decent and some that could decidedly use some work. What those dishes are is anyone's good guess. Lastly, the waitress took care of the bill in a timely manner. Service was definitely not an issue and all the staff I interacted with appeared to be very friendly. This place is a disaster. The Mongolian beef looks and tastes like dog food. If I could rate it negative stars I would. Every time I go there it's worse. It's absolutely vile- I wouldn't send my worst enemy here. They should be ashamed but I don't think that will ever happen. Haven't been here in a few years. Don't know if they changed owners or just changed the way they did business but it's really clean now and the food is really good, seems fresh and clean. I was not ok with the old way this place was, with Asian food especially you can taste a dirty kitchen in its food. Terrible service. Here's my vent: On Friday, July 28th my friend and I came to this establishment at 2:00 pm for lunch. My friend was getting his favorite plate, Lo Mein, and I was excited to eat my favorite dish, sesame chicken. No one stood to greet us at the host station, so we stood there for a few minutes discussing how empty the lobby was. Once seated, the waiter was moderately pleasant. Brought out our waters and appetizer in a timely manner, all was well. Then our food came. My order was for a #5 combo: chicken lo mein, sesame chicken (which was the only thing I wanted), and sweet n sour pork. My friend ordered a #4: golden fried shrimp, chicken lo mein, and sweet and sour chicken. As the food was set on the table I noticed the "sesame chicken" wasn't covered in the usual sesame sauce, and it looked veeery similar to my friends fried shrimp. I called the waiter over to voice my concern, explaining that I thought they confused our orders and brought us the same plate to which he adamantly denied, telling me what I got was in fact their sesame chicken. I explicitly pointed at my plate then my friends, asking for clarification that one was sesame chicken and one was fried shrimp. He assured me that I received what I had ordered. Thinking maybe their sesame chicken was just dry instead of coated with sauce, I accepted my place. After finishing all but one of the pieces of "chicken", I bit into the last one and the deep fried batter fell off half of it, exposing- surprise, a piece of shrimp. Setting my silverware down, I pushed away the plate. Once the waiter came back to the table, before I could say what had happened, he saw the plate, and said that his father must have mixed the orders up. He offered to make me some sesame chicken, but since my plate was nearly finished I was finished eating and just wanted to leave. No offer to comp the plate, nor discount on the order. Nothing. By the way, I've had yelp for over 3 years and this is the first time I've had service so bad I felt it necessary to leave a review. Caution if you choose to come here. If you do, stick to the lo mein, it was pretty tasty. *Update* Went to Happy Garden 5 miles away in Mt Angel the next day to curb my craving for sesame chicken. Absolutely amazing! Recently I've been to Chan's twice, both times the food was really good. Yes the atmosphere is too bright and they haven't had any music, so you have to listen to people eat. That being said, the "happy family" dish has a wonderful flavor of grilled beef the permeates the al dente veggies that accompanied the dish. My kid had the typical combination plate, but the deep fried shrimp was not overly breaded and the sauce was not overly sweet. No leftovers in other words. The 75 cent upgrade to pork fried rice is recommended and worth it. Taste-wise the only complaint I had was the hot tea, it definitely left some room for improvement (try jasmine!). So far the WORST Chinese food I've ever had in my life. Safeway's American-Chinese (which isn't good) food has more flavor than here. Their Sweet N Sour chicken was mostly tempura batter with the SMALLEST piece of chicken in each on, and on top of that, the oil they fried it in must've been old because it tasted like it hadn't been changed for a week! The pork chow mein had barely any pork in it. You would've thought I ordered it without pork if you saw it. The only way the food had flavor is if I SMOTHERED it in the provided sauces. Has been around the quaint little town for around 30+ years. Travel from Portland several times a year to get the beef curry and egg rolls which I cannot find anywhere in Portland's Asian restaurants. Chan's has been serving the Silverton community for 42 years and is, by far, my favorite restaurant in a town that has many restaurants. Chan's has a very big Chinese and American menu. My favorite menu items are the Happy Family which is a variety of meats and vegetables with black bean sauce or garlic sauce, and the walnut shrimp which has candied walnuts and butterfly shrimp on broccoli with a sugary sauce. The portions are generous and the prices are very fair. The staff is so friendly and very helpful. They also have banquet facilities that can serve a large number of people. It would be perfect for class or family reunions, birthday parties, or Christmas parties. Recently, Chan's has done a great update of their restaurant and banquet room giving the building a new spaciousness and lighting fixtures that are very contemporary. I have lived in Silverton for more than 40 years, long enough to know that Chans is a restaurant that is in dire need of help. I know there are a few locals that love this place, but for the life of me I cannot figure out why. I have tried their food over the years maybe four or five times and I have never come away satisfied. Tonight, was my last attempt. I brought home three dishes and all three of them were absolutely terrible. The vegetables were overcooked, and the egg foo young unpalatable. I cannot figure out how this place stays in business. In addition to the regular menu they also provide lunch and dinner specials on weekdays and a 10% Senior discount on Tuesdays.
