Matthew's Grill - Gaithersburg, MD Authentic Filipino Comfort in the Heart of Montgomery County If you can't visit the Philippines--or if you simply miss authentic Filipino food--a visit to Matthew's Grill will absolutely help set the mood. From the food to the atmosphere to the people (both customers and staff), everything felt wonderfully familiar and welcoming in a Filipino tradition. According to Jimbo (sp?), our greeter and host, Matthe's Grill would be exactly the same as if we were actually there in the Philippines. Born and raised there, and apparently Matthew's cousin, Jimbo's enthusiastic friendliness set the tone for our entire visit. We first heard about Matthew's from an Uber driver who insisted it was the only nearby spot for truly authentic Filipino dishes. Based on our lunch, he wasn't exaggerating. We ordered: Matt's Crispy Pata - a mini mountain of succulent fried pork shanks, bone‑in and beautifully crisp outside and juicy inside. The vinegar dip cut through the pork fat like a flavor katana. Kare Kare - tender oxtail and vegetables in a rich peanut broth. Creamy and rich. CJ's Chicken Wings - reportedly among the top ten in the region, and easy to believe people would make a meal of these alone. Lumpia/Egg Rolls - reminiscent of Mexican taquitos, perfectly fried and addictive. Once you start eating them o it is hard to stop! White Rice - served alongside everything, as it should be. Each dish came with its own sauce or dip to enhance the flavors. I can't personally confirm how authentic each recipe was, but I can say everything was delicious, portions were generous, and we took home more than half for another meal. (We'll be reheating by air‑frying and convection baking--these dishes are far too nuanced and crispy for the microwave!) Service was fast, tables were large and clean (great for families), and complimentary water arrived in big refillable pitchers. Music played at a pleasant background level. The all‑gender restroom is located down the left hallway behind the kitchen--clean and well supplied. Parking is free and plentiful in the shared strip‑mall lot. A note on hours: Matthew's is only open for dine‑in on Thursdays and weekends, though take‑away is available on some other days. It's best to check ahead. We were among the only dine‑in guests on a Friday at lunchtime, but there was a steady stream of customers picking up take‑out orders. If you go, I recommend embracing the Filipino experience. At minimum, it's worth learning how to say "thank you" in Tagalog. We did. Salamat! read more

First time having Filipino food in MD and did not disappoint! Was seated right away and was asked if we've ever been before or had Filipino food before. Pretty casual spot with friendly and sociable staff! I enjoyed all the dishes we got. Loved their lumpia Shanghai as always. I liked the amount of flavour and salt their sisig had. Their take on halo halo was quite nice too, and not too icy like others I've had, although the flan was a little too sweet to my liking. After we paid, they gave us a free cup of Buko Pandan to share, which was extremely nice and great! Overall, had a great time here; great hospitality and great food for such decent prices! Everything here is so good! Me and my friends enjoyed the lumpia the most. I love how crispy they are and the filling inside is great along with the sweet chili dipping sauce. Came here on a Friday at noon right after Christmas. There wasn't a ton of rush but there were people in and out getting food to go! More of a casual restaurant vibe but enough tables with enough seating for multiple groups of different sizes, with plenty of room. Our waiter was very friendly, came and took our order after we took a while to decide. We weren't sure if we had enough food but our waiter said he thought we had enough but he left us a menu just in case. And he was very correct. The street food appetizer came out around the same time as pork belly. I loved the street food platter, particularly the rolls. The pork belly was also good, it just isn't usually my favorite item. Next came out a huge pile of fried pork, much much larger than we expected and very welcome. This along with the sauce it came with tasted great! And last we got our chicken adobo, which was probably my favorite item after the street food platter. Came here for the first time to try a Kamayan for a friends birthday and it was spectacular. The table was pre dressed with the banana leaves prior to us arriving and the food was placed around the time we all arrived. When the food was being placed, there was an art behind how it was displayed and prior to eating, we were provided a little history lesson about the components on the table from sauces to the meats. This hole in wall provided a homey vibe with what reminded me of the elders yelling in the kitchen while everyone else sat in the living room chatting. The staff was very accommodating to our group and while we were unaware of when they closed, they never rushed us out. You would never think Filipino food with a name like this. But man the food is pretty good! We also had a fish ball appetizer and one with fried tofu and pork belly. That was way too much food for 2 adults and an 11yr old. The fried fish was really well cooked and tasty. The bbq pork skewers were outstanding. My son devoured them with rice. This is my go-to Filipino restaurant in the area! The food is reaaally good and reminds me of my parents' cooking. My favorite things to order are: - Sisig - Bistek - Escabeche - Lumpia - Lechon kawali - Pork bbq The dishes are shareable (for example, one order of sisig was enough for two people), but you have to order the rice separately. I also like the service here. There is one kuya who is really friendly! Specially the chicken adobo. The ambiance was nice, not too lound, and the service was excellent. We went there on a Saturday. I believe they open at 11:30 AM. I suggest you get there early. People started rolling in around 12:30 PM. They get a lot to go orders, but even at that our food still came out on time. The only problem I had with this place was that we ordered calamari and they expect you to eat it with ranch dressing. My bad it tells you on the menu that they serve it with ranch dressing ( but funny thing) if you look at the picture on their menu, it's definitely not ranch dressing !! I pay attention to little details people !! If I am paying, I should have options. For this reason, and only this reason alone. I give them, a 4 or 4.5 Whichever the yelp website allows me to give them. It's a Saturday night and I check the time to see that Matthew's grill closes in ONE HOUR. We hastily get our stuff together to leave the house and head to the highly anticipated Matthew's Grill. The moment we took those first bites of each dish, the happy food dancing and smiles on our faces commenced. We looked at each other with a "oh that's GUUD" smirk. We have been wanting to try out Matthew's grill for years! But we always miss our chance because we only decide to go when they are not open. They don't have conventional hours, so be sure to check their hours in advance to make sure you can make it in time! I believe the manager told us that on the weekdays that they are open, it's only for carry out now, but they are open for dine in on the weekend. We arrived just 30 mins before they closed and they welcomed us with open arms anyway, with the disclaimer that we had to put in our entire order at once since the kitchen was closing soon! The food was delicious! The sisig was VERY good. I also really enjoyed the pancit as well! We also got lumpia, lechon kawali and kare kare. It was all plenty and delicious! The staff was very friendly. The plates come out as family style, so keep that in mind when ordering! The portions are large and amongst the four of us, we have PLENTY to take home for leftovers. Having been a huge fan of Filipino food because I am filipino LOL, a friend of mine suggested I try Matthew's grill in Gaithersburg. The food I ordered was excellent. I ordered sisig, chicken bbq, and grilled squid, and the authenticity of the food was exceptional. However, the price of the food is extremely high because the menu prices are very different from what you will pay at the cashier (more expensive). There is also a ridiculous fee of 4% charged for using a credit card as well as a tip when it is takeout. I would have given this place five stars if they worked on their pricing, their transparency, and improved the schedule of their operations. Food: Amazing Location: The location is okay and small. I highly highly recommend it if you don't know what to get. The meat was extremely flavorful and there were crispy bits along with tender bits. The egg mixed in was a complete game changer. I ordered the lechon kewali ($20) with a side of rice ($5) and sizzling pork sisig with egg ($21). The lechon kewali was decent but there was only 1/3 of meat on a piece and the rest was fat so I really wasn't a fan of it, although the meat was good. The sizzling pork sisig with egg was pretty good and the rice makes it better. If you are craving Filipino food, Matthew's Grill will not disappoint. This restaurant has to be one of my favorites in the DC metro area. Matthew's Grill, located in the same center as Best Friends Pet Hotel and Boca Botanas, serves traditional Kapampangan style food. Pre-COVID, they offered a buffet option, which was great because you got to try a variety of food for a reasonable price. Although they only offer carryout a few days a week right now (Fri-Sun), the quality of their food and service is still great. Some of my favorites to order include the pork lumpia, bbq skewers (chicken or pork), sisig (a must!) lechon kiwali, bistek, and crispy pata. Their chicken adobo and pancit are also good. No matter what item you order, you'll taste tons of flavor. Everything is cooked well. The pork sisig (don't let the chicken liver scare you. You could barely taste it!) has a slight kick to it. The beef in the bistek is super tender. The lechon and crispy pata are fried well, but not oily. Steamed rice is $1, not bad, but suggest cooking it at home if you are able to. If you have room, or can make room, don't forget to check out their leche flan, turon, and halo halo! read more

Hubby and I tried the street food- lumpiang Shanghai, 2 types of bola bola (fish and squid balls) and a yummy sauce similar to but not exactly like sweet chili sauce. For our main course we ordered Kare Kare with rice on the side. This is one of my favorites, it's beef (usually with oxtail) stew with peanut sauce. Thickener is the roasted rice powder in the sauce. Super tasty, full of flavor and mixed with the rice, just perfect! It is served with fermented sautéed shrimp paste.
