The lighting doesn't do it justice as I'm outside under an umbrella. But this is probably one of the best burgers I've tasted in a while, very different from any of the others I've tried. The service was friendly, but a little slow. There was a huge baby shower being hosted outside which all the servers seemed to be helping with. Both dishes we got were delicious. I had birria nachos and I will be dreaming about them! The chips are made in house and held up well to the toppings all of which were plentiful. They describe the dish to come with "caramelized crispy rice" which supposedly is what makes a good paella. I've never had a paella before but this set the standard pretty low. Instead of crispy, the squid ink rice was incredibly soggy/watery throughout the entire dish, and just tasted of lemon and salt. The chicken was slightly overcooked and the egg and seafood lacked flavor. Kind of just tasted like a sour salty soggy mess of a dish, and a $30 one at that! The Machaca con huevos were just okay. Flavor was lacking as well. What really saved the experience was the absolutely beautiful interior and seating. We were sat near a window that peered over the nearby river. Very scenic. Wow is a good start rating this place. I've walked by it numerous of time and only checked the menu once a while back. It's one of those things where you don't know what you want but every menu all looks the same. We finally tried it out for dinner after a weekend in the wine country. The restaurant is right in the heart of downtown SLO next to the park and riverwalk. We had an early reservation at 6 on a Saturday and let me say the place was packed. The outside patio was completely full which was nice to see. Checking in was easy with the hostess. All was sweet and made it fast and simply and we were seated right away without having to wait for the whole party to arrive. Menu wise, a bit of everything but they specialized in paella's. And that was had. Our waitress Kaitlin was the sweetest. Right from the start, she was a major doll. Made sure we were taken care of throughout the whole dining experience. Started off with a bottle of red for the table. A good selections from their menu. Then a few small shared plates for the table. An order of the bacon wrapped dates, Brussels sprouts, Peruvian shrimp ceviche and the gambas al ajillo. First off the dates, very tasty with salty and sweet. A good bite size with about 6 piece. Then the ceviche, nice chunks of shrimp with all the trimming. Cucumber, red onions, tomatoes , avocado, cilantro and chips. Then you have the sprouts which is pretty self explanatory. Roasted to a nice crisp with golden raisins and almonds. Pretty decent and delicious. Lastly the gambas, sautéed shrimp in paprika garlic and white wine sauce with a Parmesan slice of sourdough bread. Everything was delicious and a good start to an amazing meal. I do recommend the starters. For our entree, even though we started off with loads of the shared plates. The mains all looked amazing. Clearly we had to have the paella which they're known for. There were couple options in them but we opted for the mix which was a combination of the seafood and meat paella. Let me say it was massive and clearly more than enough for four of us. The nice big chunks of seafood and meat which they did not skimp on. The flavors and the whole combination of everything together, chefs kiss. It was pretty massive as well. Of course we couldn't just stop there, we also had the lamb chops with frites. Cooked perfectly and very tasty. The hanger steak with chimichurri sauce accompanied by roasted potatoes and sautéed broccolini. That dish was excellent and steak was cooked perfectly. Lastly, I believe it was one of their specials the sea bass. A nice thick and flaky piece of fish on top of a red sauce of tomatoes, olives. The flavor was excellent and worth it. The food was excellent and it was a surprise when there were leftovers. We may have over done it with the extra entrees after seeing the massive platter of paella. But every dish was excellent and worth it. The service was great with everyone involved. Friendly staff and excellent customer service. The food and wine were great. The whole dining experience was top notch and greatly enjoyed. We will definitely be back. At least we know about the paella now...lol... A must and highly recommend. The Kalua Pork with cucumber salad, Birria with pickled onion, and Rockfish with creamy lime coleslaw were incredible and totally worth 4 for $13 on Taco Tuesday! They're generously packed and loaded so be ready to open wide and be sure to GET EXTRA HULI SAUCE, SALSA, and side of goat cheese to dip the birria one into- soo good! Our server was very nice and moved the umbrella for us to keep us in the shade as it was quite hot that day. My husband and daughter shared two different paellas (Del Mar and De La Luna). They both enjoyed their food. I sampled a little bit, and liked both dishes as well, especially the De La Luna with black squid ink rice. I ordered the shakshouka. It's much better than the one I ordered at a different restaurant. The rich tomato sauce was flavorful. Decent portion size. Had seen Luna Red over the years and finally decided to made a reservation. Quickly sat inside near the bar. Server Paolo was friendly, ordered a Vodka Collins and Chiquilla te quiero for drinks and the warm goat cheese toast and tortilla soup. Drinks were delicious, loved the goat cheese toast but it is a big serving, tortilla soup was good but more onion than anything. Del Mar paella came out quick but apps were pretty filling so sadly got full very quick. Paella was good but more so fish than clams or shrimp. We wanted to get boxes but our server was missing for 20 mins before we could flag him down. Our empty appetizer plates sat there the whole time during the meal and we were never asked if we wanted another drink. Not sure if it was just too busy of a night but service was lack luster. I had also put our reservation down as a celebration for my mom, but no one had ever asked about it. We always come up to the coast every year to celebrate her chemo anniversary and always choose one nice restaurant each year. Had dinner here the night of game 7 of the World Series. We wanted to watch the game, so we were seated in the bar. Our waiter, whose name I think is Pablo, was very personable, professional and warm. We ordered the fried chicken appetizer, an olives appetizer, and the De La Luna paella. Our son gobbled up the fried chicken and said it was fantastic. The olives are served hot. We all found that very odd. Never, ever have I been served or ate hot olives. We didn't like them hot, but in a few minutes they had cooled to room temperature, and were tasty and pretty generous. They are particularly good spooned out over their bread, which is very good. The star of the meal was the De La Luna paella. It's inspired by Spanish paella, but with its pico de gallo and poached eggs, along with Amarillo chicken and homemade chorizo... I'd characterize it as California inspired paella. The rices was cooked perfectly, with the traditional mix of soft and charred rice. A very good meal and dining experience. read more

We were in San Luis Obispo and were walking around downtown to find the most enticing restaurant to dine at. After checking out around half a dozen options, we decided on Luna red as the ambiance looked amazing and the menu had options for all the picky eaters in our group. We got seated outdoors and they had sufficient number of patio umbrellas to shelter us from the afternoon sun. The outdoors was really beautiful, they had plenty of greenery and it was like a tropical paradise. We got a lot of appetizers to share, they have options to order 4, 6 or 10 tacos. We got 10 start off with. I personally got a paella as it has been forever since I had it. *brussel sprouts- 4.5/5- one of the better versions of brussel sprouts I have had in a while, they were beautifully roasted, they retained their character but at the same time were delicious instead of tasting too healthy. *fingerling potatoes-4.5/5- potatoes tend to be tasty any which way they are cooked. The standout in this version was the finger licking sauce it was doused in. *paella- 4.5/5- I got the chicken paella. It came with a soft jammy egg. The dish had 75% protein and about 25% rice. The rice at the bottom was nicely crisped up. The chicken was in large chunks but surprisingly non funky and wonderfully flavored. I stole some of the sauce from the tacos to amp up this dish further. 4.5 for the food, rounding up for the good vibes and great ambiance! read more

Luna Red is a wonderful spot right in downtown SLO next to Mission Plaza. I stopped in for en early dinner before batching a movie at the Palm Theater and it was a smash hit! We sat outside and enjoyed the lovely setting without feeling crowded or rushed and there was no wait since we arrived around 5:15 pm. We were early enough to enjoy happy hour so ordered drinks off the happy our menu and several appetizers. The Brussel sprouts were HUGE (I recommend the goat cheese base if asked). The pollo frito was amazing and the seasoning on the papas bravas was to die for! My friend and I split a plate with four tacos and chose two rockfish and two braised birria beef and they were absolutely delicious. I also enjoyed a Manhattan that was spot on. My son and I traveled to SLO to do a little record/ cd and thrift shopping. We asked a few locals where we should go for lunch to get some gluten-free options. They pointed us to Luna Red , and we were happy we decided to give it a try. We had our dog with us, so we needed an outdoor option. Luna Red has a beautiful outdoor patio that is dog friendly. For lunch, my son ordered the grilled chicken sandwich on flatbread. There was some discussion on whether or not they use a dedicated fryer for the fries, but we went with it - based on our servers assurance. My son liked the sandwich , but it didn't hold up well as it fell apart with all the toppings and sauce added to it. I was able to sneak a bite of the fries and they were pretty good. For my lunch entree, I ordered the nachos with shredded beef. These nachos were pretty good! The only issue I had was that there was a liquid forming at the bottom that made the bottom nachos soggy. Our total bill came out to 49.00 for two lunch entrees , beer, and an Arnold Palmer. I like this place , the menu is creative and different. We visited the day before Valentine's Day and made a reservation online about a week in advance. Prime dinner times around 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. were completely booked out, so the closest option available was 5:45 p.m., which we took. However, during dinner, I noticed a significant number of empty tables throughout the restaurant. It was a bit frustrating because it seemed like later reservations would have been possible given how open the dining room actually was. They had plenty of staff on the floor, so it did not appear to be a staffing limitation. If you are aiming for a specific time, it may be worth calling directly or booking further in advance to see if additional availability exists beyond what is shown online. That aside, the overall experience was solid. The food and drinks were good. The cocktail menu could have been a bit more expansive in terms of unique or house creations, but what they offered was well executed. The appetizer and entrée selections are moderately sized. Not overwhelming, but not sparse either. There is enough variety to find something appealing without the menu feeling cluttered. Our server was excellent. Professional, personable, and quick to build rapport. He anticipated our needs without hovering and made the evening feel smooth and relaxed. Parking is typical for downtown San Luis Obispo. Since it is located near Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, you should expect to park a short walk away and head in on foot. There is no dedicated on site parking, which is standard for the area. This was actually my second visit. The first time, I ordered the paella, and it was outstanding. That said, it easily serves two to three people. If you order it, plan to split it or be ready to take leftovers home. Overall, I would recommend Luna Red and would return again.
