Rancheros sauces was authentic. Needed some hot sauce but great. All eggs were cooked perfectly! We also got a Chulos plate, Al pastor bowl, a breakfast burrito, and Machaca. All were tasty! My mom got a michelada and it was way too spicy for her, but if you like spice, it was great! I would recommend, but you might have to wait a little. read more

Talk about a hidden gem! Tucked deep away in an office complex that will have you thinking you must've entered the wrong address, is Chulos Cafe and Cantina, a breakfast spot serving up some hearty Mexican/Latin American dishes. We got the Ranchero breakfast burrito and Mexican Benedict for two of us to share, and it was plenty of food. The burrito alone may have been big enough for both! My favorite of the two was the Mexican Benedict, the hollandaise was super flavorful and the eggs were cooked perfectly. The burrito was also really good, I just don't tend to get wet burritos, so it wasn't what I was used to. This spot was super quiet on a Saturday morning, we had the room that we were seated in all to ourselves! Great option if you're staying in Templeton or visiting some of the wineries near by, just prepare to be full afterwards! read more

Oh, happy day! Chulo's is now serving dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings, from 4 to 8 pm. (But call ahead for reservations, since they're a popular event venue.) We were here right around 2 pm on a Thursday, so consoled ourselves with another one of their new offerings -- an Orange Creamosa! And yes, it was as fabulously delicious as it sounds. Immediately walking in we were welcomed and sat promptly. We decided to sit on the patio which wasn't too busy at the time we arrived. They must welcome dogs on the patio since they had a water dish on the ground full of water. I got the cheese enchilada with Mexican rice. As seen in the picture, the cheese inside was still cold and not melted. The sauce put over the enchilada was warm. I'm assuming they thought the sauce would melt the cheese inside the enchilada. Unfortunately it didn't. The rice was good. No complaints. I tried their tropical ice tea, super good. They put a slice of orange in it so you get that citrus kick with you drink it! The service was great. The waitress was welcoming and ensured our drinks were full the entire visit. The ambiance on the patio is very zen. They have a cute water fountain running on the patio as well. That of course is nice to listen to while you enjoy your meal. Recently went to breakfast here on a Sunday morning. The decor was what you would expect for a Mexican restaurant, without being over the top. We appreciated getting a table right away, as there was only one other table of diners when we arrived. Despite that, we waited longer than I would have expected to have our order taken and later to get our bill. Staff were very friendly though. They offer a multitude of specialty coffee drinks, including some with alcohol. I had a Nutella mocha, which was fine (but the Nutella part seems to be mostly represented by a Nutella drizzle on the whipped topping ). I did not detect much Nutella flavor within the coffee itself, which just had the usual mocha flavor. So, I don't really think it was worth a price of $8. I also ordered the Chulo's combo, which comes with eggs, sausage or bacon and choice of pancakes or French toast. I had mine with sausage patties, French toast and over medium eggs. My plate was generous, with two eggs (which were closer to over easy with pretty runny yolks), two sausage patties and two pieces of French toast. The sausage was just a little salty, but delicious otherwise. I gave one of my patties to my husband, given the generous portion I received. The French toast was my favorite. It appears to be made from a Texas toast style bread. The seasoning was good and there was a slight custard quality to it in the center of the toast, which I really loved. They could elevate things by providing heated maple syrup instead, but not a deal breaker for me. My husband really loved his eggs and bacon dish, as he cleaned his plate entirely. I hope they are not in danger of closing, since the food is good, but the lack of customers midmorning on a Sunday is a little concerning. They are in an unusual area though, sandwiched between medical and dental offices. Also, they recently added dinner service to their hours, so that may be worth checking out. read more

I ordered the chilaquiles, and everything tasted incredibly fresh. The portions were just right, and the chorizo was the real deal -- so flavorful and perfectly cooked. You can really tell they use quality ingredients. My fiancé had the carne asada torta, and it was amazing. The meat was tender and delicious, and that chimichurri sauce took it to the next level The space itself is small and cozy, the food was absolutely on point, and they were playing country music, which made the whole experience totally my vibe. Tucked away in Templeton near a bunch of medical offices and the local hospital, is Chulos Cafe and Cantina! Came here early on a Saturday for breakfast, as a friend of a friend recommended it and they were absolutely right, it is truly amazing! The breakfast menu is extensive - they have a wide variety of omelettes and scrambled options, french toast, pancakes, french toast, mexican style breakfast options, breakfast burritos and skillets. Their lunch menu also has an impressive number of options including sandwiches, salads, burritos, tortas and burgers! There is really something for everyone here. I ordered the California omelette (which came with bacon and avocado), and my friend ordered the veggie omelette. Both were absolutely delicious and my omelette was filled with so much bacon. The hash browns were cooked and grilled to perfection. The food came out very quick and was hot and super fresh. We got seated immediately and everyone working was friendly and attentive. First off this is a cute and comfortable place off the beaten path. My rating is between a 3 and 4, I felt pricing high compared to other breakfast places. They did have an extensive menu for breakfast and dinner. My husband and I usually go out to breakfast once a week. You get a 2-egg omelette which is perfect for me. My was a bacon, cheese with some avocado on top, with a side of fruit and a piece of toast. My husband had chili verde and said it was nice and moist, along with hash browns. I had not been here in more than 5 years. I used to be a regular years ago when I worked at Twin Cities Hospital. The food was still good, however I do have some suggestions for the owners. 1) It was freezing inside. 2) I had to ask for salsa for my Mexican food lunch and was brought a tiny, tiny container. Maybe 1 Tablespoon. 3) I had coffee and was never offered a refill. 4) No one ever checked to see how we were doing or if we needed anything during the entire meal. They were not busy at all. With all the New Mexican restaurants popping up in Templeton and all of North County, they need to up their game. Especially since their prices are considerably higher than most other Mexican restaurants. That being said, I hope they stay in business and do well. They are a Templeton institution. read more

I asked for NO onions. Secondly, the cost for 2 burritos was $40. No chips or salsa was included. When we ate the burritos, I have to say that they were not good. meat was dry and just yucky. She immediately stated that she didn't have time, sorry. The ambience looks like it might've been nice. There were some scattered tables that didn't make sense in the entryway/foyer. However, you could see the smaller tables, single tops, and double tops all were looking around like they needed something. This looks like it may be the only restaurant right around this area. And I just found out I'll be frequently coming here for doctors appointments however, after that experience, I won't even try this place again. PS considering I was gonna frequent this place. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile now. The restaurant is tucked behind and in between doctor and dentist offices. We were seated outside. The outside is lush with plants, trees, and a fountain. A couple people mentioned a really bad smell of maybe animal poop. The restaurant wasn't too busy. A couple tables were taken outside. We had a party of 5 one being a toddler. They didn't ask if we wanted a high chair or give us another place setting. We had to grab our own straws and place setting. After ordering, our food arrived quickly. Everything looked great. The food taste great. I enjoyed the sauce on my tamale. The taco that I ordered was filled to the brim. All the flavors were great. My daughter got a burrito. It was huge. The pictures don't do the size of the burrito justice. My husband ordered a coke. It was a bottled coke. This is one of my pet peeves. In order to get a refill you have to order another one. In the end, the restaurant would make more money getting a drink machine than buying cans or bottles of soda. Their patrons would also benefit. My sister ordered chips and salsa. Our waitress never gave it to her. She had to ask for them halfway through her meal. You already have to pay extra for chips and salsa. So she should have brought them out first thing. Our waitress never asked if we wanted water refills or came to check on us. We asked for a box for our leftovers and she didn't even bring that. We had to go up to the register to get it. Overall, the food was really good. My sister said it was one of the best carne Asada burritos she had ever had. The size and taste were a 4/5. The ambience was a 4. The service was a 1. I would understand it a little more if it was busy, but it wasn't at all. Great little family owned place. Inside you'll find plenty of seating for small or large groups, and a comfortable atmosphere. The staff were prompt in greeting us and getting our order going. There are a variety of Benedict options, and I chose the corned beef hash Benedict. Instead of the traditional ham there was a ample amount of homemade corned beef has with a perfectly poached egg, all topped with hollandaise sauce. Hands down one of the best breakfasts in Templeton. Hidden little gem where you wouldn't expect to find an amazing little food joint there. Tucked away by the hospital, with an easy parking lot and plenty of spaces. Egg Benedict was amazing according to my wife, and she's a stickler on her Benedict's. Sausage Patty and hash browns were done just perfectly, and the hash browns were crispy on the exterior and amazing moist & flavorful interior. French Toast was also an absolute bomb shell! I'm giving a solid four stars here - they've got a nice outdoor, but covered, patio area to sit about 6-8 tables. The menu lists so many of my favorites, I had a hard time deciding. Based on a fellow Elite review, I asked for "Free Cuba" because it sounded like a south american version of Loco Moco. Sadly, the server said they ran out of their garlic white rice. Very disappointing. Thinking quickly, I ordered another staple of mine, Huevos Rancheros, with corn tortillas, and added a beef patty (medium rare) on the side. Ha - absent the rice, it turned out really good. Let's break down the Huevos Rancheros: Beans - top notch quality, full of hearty flavor Rice - pretty good, cooked just right Eggs - overeasy just like I asked, doused with rachera sauce, and topped with sour cream and avocado. Presentation was a little meh, and I wished they had put the corn tortillas on the bottom instead of in a separate container (the round, brick-colored plastic one). The experience would have flirted with 5 start but for the $7.99 they charged me for the lone beef patty. Hmmm... Chulos is across from Twin Cities hospital, in a court, with office building. Love the interior and outside area. Makes you feel like you're not in Templeton. The chips also seemed like they would've been great fresh, but were not. Instead, on the stale side. The salsa was great. Had some heat, but not overwhelming. You could really taste the ingredients, but it is probably the hottest table salsa I've ever had in SLO county. The Chile Relleno Burrito, with my added chicken, was amazing! First, GREAT SIZE! Presentation was excellent. Creamy, cheesy, hearty chicken, fluffy/thick rice done perfectly, with the acid from the tomatoes, onion, chile and salsa cutting through the fattiness. I would guess Oaxaca cheese filled Relleno. Masterfully done! All Smothered in a beautifully simple, yet complex sauce, with Avocado, Sour Cream, and lettuce on top. Layer upon layer of flavoring. My new favorite burrito. If the chips were fresh/warm/seasoned, lettuce didn't include stock and they were a little more attentive, this place would be a 5 star! read more

Only thing that bummed me way out was no quac and no salsa on the side for our meals, super bummed I love Chulos hot sauce but otherwise the FD server offered utensils and put all dairy to the side as requested! Way way way over priced!!! Got the breakfast "special" carne with sautéed onion in a red sauce 2 eggs came with small serving rice and beans. They didn't have the price posted we assumed it was similar to most their breakfast prices 15-20 ...we were charged 30 bucks - food was ok but no way the meat cut justify the $$$. Will not return but learned a lot of lessons there - ask for specials pricing and ask if cocktail are fermented wine based or distilled spirits- wine based are sooooo sweet, they do not post on cocktail list on table anything about all drinks are fermented wine based but they charge premium spirits prices. read more

This is the first time we visited this restaurant and we live here. First of all the value that you receive from the price the amount of food is excellent. The service from the team was excellent from the hostess, server, and bus service. They were attentive to keeping the table clean, waters full and drinks refilled promptly. The food had exceptional flavor and the size allowed for taking home leftovers. The location is easy to find even though it is not located in the center of town with the other restaurants. The ambience is nice kind of a Mexican themed place although they have lots of different choices to eat but it does seem to be that they gravitate toward Mexican dishes. We used to come here a lot before the pandemic, I will return again and again it's good food, good service in a great location for eating outdoors. About the food - my cinnamon roll French toast was good the scrambled eggs were done perfectly ice tea was fresh. The cinnamon roll French toast was harder than expected. I am used to french toast being mushy and soft. This is because it's made with a cinnamon roll it was thicker and tougher. Next time I'd opt for plain french toast. Good place though! read more
