Their current dinner menu, subject to change.
    Lynnette M.

Oh, happy day! Chulo's is now serving dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings, from 4 to 8 pm. (But call ahead for reservations, since they're a popular event venue.) We were here right around 2 pm on a Thursday, so consoled ourselves with another one of their new offerings -- an Orange Creamosa! And yes, it was as fabulously delicious as it sounds. Service is always warm, welcoming, and gracious. Como familia...without the drama. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Pics of their dinner menu, drink offerings, and hacienda-like interior below.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Salud!

Cheese enchilada with rice no beans

Immediately walking in we were welcomed and sat promptly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We decided to sit on the patio which wasn't too busy at the time we arrived. They must welcome dogs on the patio since they had a water dish on the ground full of water.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I got the cheese enchilada with Mexican rice. As seen in the picture, the cheese inside was still cold and not melted. The sauce put over the enchilada was warm. I'm assuming they thought the sauce would melt the cheese inside the enchilada. Unfortunately it didn't. The rice was good. No complaints. I tried their tropical ice tea, super good. They put a slice of orange in it so you get that citrus kick with you drink it! The service was great. The waitress was welcoming and ensured our drinks were full the entire visit. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance on the patio is very zen. They have a cute water fountain running on the patio as well. That of course is nice to listen to while you enjoy your meal.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside the restaurant is on the dimmer side with lighting but cozy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Chulo's combo with French toast, eggs and sausage
    Lisa C.

Recently went to breakfast here on a Sunday morning. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The decor was what you would expect for a Mexican restaurant, without being over the top.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We appreciated getting a table right away, as there was only one other table of diners when we arrived. Despite that, we waited longer than I would have expected to have our order taken and later to get our bill. Staff were very friendly though. They offer a multitude of specialty coffee drinks, including some with alcohol. I had a Nutella mocha, which was fine (but the Nutella part seems to be mostly represented by a Nutella drizzle on the whipped topping ). I did not detect much Nutella flavor within the coffee itself, which just had the usual mocha flavor. So, I don't really think it was worth a price of $8. I also ordered the Chulo's combo, which comes with eggs, sausage or bacon and choice of pancakes or French toast. I had mine with sausage patties, French toast and over medium eggs. My plate was generous, with two eggs (which were closer to over easy with pretty runny yolks), two sausage patties and two pieces of French toast. The sausage was just a little salty, but delicious otherwise. I gave one of my patties to my husband, given the generous portion I received. The French toast was my favorite. It appears to be made from a Texas toast style bread. The seasoning was good and there was a slight custard quality to it in the center of the toast, which I really loved. They could elevate things by providing heated maple syrup instead, but not a deal breaker for me. My husband really loved his eggs and bacon dish, as he cleaned his plate entirely. I hope they are not in danger of closing, since the food is good, but the lack of customers midmorning on a Sunday is a little concerning. They are in an unusual area though, sandwiched between medical and dental offices. Also, they recently added dinner service to their hours, so that may be worth checking out.

Tucked away in Templeton near a bunch of medical offices and the local hospital, is Chulos Cafe and Cantina! Came here early on a Saturday for breakfast, as a friend of a friend recommended it and they were absolutely right, it is truly amazing! The breakfast menu is extensive - they have a wide variety of omelettes and scrambled options, french toast, pancakes, french toast, mexican style breakfast options, breakfast burritos and skillets. Their lunch menu also has an impressive number of options including sandwiches, salads, burritos, tortas and burgers! There is really something for everyone here. I ordered the California omelette (which came with bacon and avocado), and my friend ordered the veggie omelette. Both were absolutely delicious and my omelette was filled with so much bacon. The hash browns were cooked and grilled to perfection. The food came out very quick and was hot and super fresh. We got seated immediately and everyone working was friendly and attentive. We left happy and very full! Can't want to come back here for lunch and to try their breakfast burrito and french toast! - both looked phenomenal! 5 stars all around!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]First off this is a cute and comfortable place off the beaten path.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My rating is between a 3 and 4, I felt pricing high compared to other breakfast places. They did have an extensive menu for breakfast and dinner. My husband and I usually go out to breakfast once a week. You get a 2-egg omelette which is perfect for me. My was a bacon, cheese with some avocado on top, with a side of fruit and a piece of toast. My husband had chili verde and said it was nice and moist, along with hash browns. He requested crispy but they were not plus not cooked enough. The coffee was good and service also.

    Huevos rancheros
    Tony C.

The huevos rancheros were pretty standard, though the rice and beans we're lukewarm, on the small side. The eggs Benedict were tasty and the fruit was fresh. The server forgot sugar for the coffee and never refilled our water. With one cup of diner coffee, the total was 45.02 for two dishes. One time deal for us.

3 magic words! Open for dinner! Chulos is now open for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights! The owner has added a new menu and offer some great options for their dinner menu. Everything is always so fresh and bomb diggity! From the paella to fajitas to the Diablo camarones, you can't go wrong. Even something as simple as beans and rice, tastes unbelievably good. Tried the Churros too.... Oh. My. Gosh!!!!! The ambiance out on the back patio with the breeze makes you feel like you're on a vacation. Oh that's right, I forget we live where people vacation! Wether your looking for breakfast, lunch or dinner, Chulos is it.

I had the chilaquiles. My experience with it was that it lacked flavor, but I enjoyed it more after adding salt and hot sauce. The service was okay but our waiter never returned after we asked for hot sauce. I went up front to ask for ketchup and hot sauce.

Kiko and the entire staff were incredibly kind, welcoming, and genuinely made us feel at home. We sat on the beautiful patio, which created the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing meal. Following Kiko's recommendations, we tried several dishes, including the Ceviche SLO, Scallops Parmesan, Shrimp Causa, Pulpo de Olivo, and Arroz con Mariscos. Every single dish was beautifully prepared, fresh, and absolutely delicious. It's hard to pick a favorite because they were all outstanding. I can't wait to visit Kiko's again the next time I'm in SLO. Without a doubt, it's the best Peruvian restaurant I've ever been to. If you're anywhere near San Luis Obispo, do yourself a favor and eat here--you won't be disappointed!

This place is amazing. Service is excellent and the staff acts like they are genuinely concerned…read morethat you have a good experience. But then there's the food. And then there's the pisco... I have eaten at a few Peruvian restaurants, and once upon a time even worked with a Peruvian kid whose mom cooked food out of her home for the family to sling as a side gig, so I have an idea of Peruvian food. I'm not an authority, I just have an idea. And while there are common denominators, everyone does it their own way, and Kiko's way is to lend a fine dining twist to the traditional cuisine, without feeling pretentious. The energy goes into the flavors and preparation, and every dish is unique. And then there's the pisco. I went on a dive into pisco years ago, and it never stuck. I had some fantastic stuff from the aforementioned friend's family, but I never found anything that compared, so my infatuation waned. Well, who'da thought Kiko's also distills their own pisco? I had to try it, and it was lovely. Is lovely. While pisco is its own thing, I'd analogize their pisco to a very high-end blanco tequilla- buttery smooth, a hint of vanilla, with the base flavor of the grapes forward on the palate. I liked it so much I bought a bottle. And yes- they sell their house-distilled, world-class pisco in bottles! Unfortunately I don't live in SLO, but I visit as often as I can. This place is now on my list of restaurants I must visit every time I'm in town. I left the best for last- their pisco sours are off the hook! Whatever they do to give it that textured head is crazy good.

We were walk in, the hostess offered us seating in two bar areas and also made room in the front room for us. We sat at a table in the front room. It had nice ambiance and nicely decorated with plants. Our server was super sweet and helpful. We ordered a Paloma which was great but I heard the pisco sours are good and homemade. Wish we tried one but next time! The service was so fast. When we got our cocktail the food arrived! We ordered the señor lomo which was their lomo saltado. It was sooo good. The sauce was so flavorful and the filet mignon was very tender. It came with a lot of veggies, fries and rice too. Also ordered the escabeche which was a sea bass with similar delicious sauce and veggies. It had mixed colored roasted potato's underneath. Fish and the dish was soft and equally flavorful and delicious. I would say the sauce was slightly lighter than señor lomo. They had a platter of desserts on display. Wish we could have all of them. They all looked pretty and delicious. We tried the papaya creme brûlée. Thought it mostly tasted just like creme brûlée. Highly recommend. It is one of the best Peruvian places I've been. Kinda pricy though, each dish was about $40.

From the hostesses to the bartenders to the chefs, everyone knows how to create a beautiful experience for the guests! In the past I've tried the afrodisíaco dish and was blown away but I wanted to excite myself with a different dish so I chose the Mixto dish and wow! The flavors just burst in your mouth with how bright they are, the dish is set under Ceviche but this is so much more elevated than your typical view of ceviche dishes! My boyfriend ordered the Dragon Lake cocktail and absolutely loved it! The ingredients are so well incorporated you don't find yourself tasting a drink with overpowered liquor that drowns out the other ingredients! He's a bartender so he appreciates a well made drink! On his end he loved his plate although I didn't catch the name of it, it was beautifully plated and it showed through with the taste of each bite as well! This is a MUST visit if you're ever back in the SLO area.

Note that the parking lot, depending on which day you go, can fill up very quickly. The location is right off of the 101 and easy to find. We checked in and was seated within 10 minutes at a booth that overlooked the beautiful views of the Pismo Beach coast line. Our server, a younger black woman, who told us her nickname was 'TiTi', if I'm not mistaken, was wonderful. Her personality and hospitality was infectious and exceeded 5 stars. She brought us fresh hot corn and flour tortillas with a small cup of brown sugar butter and three different salsas to try. Everything was delicious. We ordered the surf and turf special which was a jumbo shrimp on top of a filet mignon that rested on mash potatoes and a creamy/savory white sauce. We also ordered the lobster Mac and cheese. Everything was exceptionally good. My only takeaway would be that I found the food, especially the lobster Mac and cheese to be pretty salty. Definitely excited for my next visit.

We had a reservation for a birthday dinner and arrived about 30 minutes early. We were told we'd be seated closer to our reservation time, which was completely understandable. However, as we waited, we watched several groups (including walk-ins without reservations) get seated before us. Even after our reservation time had passed, we had to check in with the host again before we were finally seated, despite there being plenty of empty tables. The service at the front definitely could have been handled better. The food, on the other hand, was very good with a great variety of options. I loved that they start you off with freshly made tortillas, cinnamon butter, and salsa to share. I ordered the Campechana de Mariscos, which was fresh, generously portioned, and perfect for sharing. We also had the Molcajete, and it was delicious! It came with a great mix of steak, chicken, chorizo, jumbo shrimp, nopal, and cheese. The portion was generous and easily enough for two people. Other dishes we ordered also included the pozole, chicken nachos, and lobster mac and cheese. Everything was delicious as well! The mac and cheese especially. For drinks, I tried the Golden Hour nonalcoholic cocktail, and unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend it. It tasted like watered-down ginger beer with no carbonation and only the faintest hint of pineapple. It was more on the bitter taste. Overall, this is a great restaurant for the ocean views and flavorful food. The portions are generous, and there's something for everyone on the menu. The only downside was the host service and the unnecessary wait despite having a reservation. I'd still come back for the food and the scenery.
