My first impression of The Oak Grill was a bit odd. If you look at the photos of this restaurant, you'll see a giant multi-tiered full bar. I saw several beautiful drinks on Yelp when I chose The Oak Grill. I walked in, the restaurant is polished and pretty, with the bar an obvious focal point. The server, Chloe, at the door waited for me to speak first, which is awkward to begin with, and I had to verbalize that I wanted breakfast. I mean... why else would I be walking into your restaurant? She explained I order there at the front counter and the food would be brought out to me. That's fine. I asked if they have mimosas and she looked at me and goes, "Mimosas?" Um, yes. Mimosas. She said "Yeah, technically, but it's up to the person working up here if they *want* to make you a drink or not. I mean, technically I'm not a bartender." I seriously almost just walked out based on that answer. You have a full bar, you serve alcohol, but only if the cashier wants to make you a drink? Is the rest of the menu also based on the cashier's discretion? Are you capable of pouring champagne and a splash of orange juice into a glass? There are 5 employees milling about, and none of them are bartenders? So... I'm not impressed by the service here and based on that alone I won't be back. I'm just gonna drink this mimosa, wait for my chilaquiles, ask for a box and bounce. I'm irritated I just paid $50 (yes, $50 for chicken chilaquiles and one begrudgingly made mimosa cost me $50) to feel like I inconvenienced them coming in. I didn't ask for a side order of apathy with my breakfast, and for that price, I'm sure I can find an actual bartender. read more

I normally don't eat at the hotel restaurant because they never live up to the expectations, especially when in a foodie town. This restaurant was an exception for the most part. Cool looking restaurant with really good service. Dined here both night I was in SLO. Got the burger and fries the first night and it was great. Fries were crispy and well seasoned. Also got the olive oil cake that night but that didn't hit the mark. It was very dense and dry but I didn't say anything as I was too full to try anything different. On to the second night, I got the tri-tip and subbed the potatoes for sweet potato purée. I have to say, the sweet potatoes and slaw were amazing. The tri-tip on the other hand was lackluster. It was tough, rubbery, hard to cut and chew. The server was amazing and swapped that out for the burger which again was great. I finished with the cheesecake which was also good, way better than the first night's dessert. Note to self, don't get the tri-tip or olive oil cake... Lastly, also have eaten breakfast here two separate times during two separate stays and it was also great. read more

Visiting SLO I ran into this hidden jewel. Service was excellent, our server Jim went out of his way to make sure everything was ok. Ordered Chilaquiles and French toast. Presentation of both dishes was outstanding. The chilaquiles, I was impressed by the unique balance of flavors, first time I've encountered such special blend of ingredients, medium well eggs were a bit over done but hey it's easy to overlook when everything else was beyond excellent. French toast, topped with fresh berries & whipped cream, perfect blend of ingredients. Highly recommend and well priced. First time in. The restaurant is part of Hotel Cerro and opens up on Garden Street. The inside has high ceilings with hanging sound board/lights/speakers. The industrial look fits the location well. They have a full bar, but the high end selections in the spirit section could use a boost. My wife had the Avocado toast and she really liked it. I had a bite and agreed that the flavors were well balanced with the Arugula and balsamic. She said she would definitely order again. I had the Short Rib Benedict. It was good but didn't knock my socks off. The potatoes were good. They were the whole baby creamers and roasted perfectly. We had a side of fruit which consisted of Strawberries and 5 Blackberries. It could have had more variety, but I get it. The service was excellent. Our waiter checked in with us regularly and we never were waiting for a requested item. Cute little restaurant attached to Hotel Cerro. Stopped in twice while staying at the hotel. Service was super slow over the weekend when they were busier but great when we visited on a weekday. We made our reservation for Thanksgiving dinner. They called a week ahead to tell us they had a three course price fixe menu with three entree courses: turkey, short ribs and a veg lentil stew. That was perfect because my daughter is a vegetarian and my husband doesn't eat turkey. When we got there for our 6:45 reservation, they were out of short ribs. We had to ask four times for bread and butter. We asked that our salads have dressing on the side. The salads were embarrassingly small and drenched in dressing. For a three course $75 meal one expects a decent sized salad. My husband had a salad and a bowl of soup. My turkey was dry. The green beans appeared to have been frozen. They were supposed to have garlic on them. I could see white specks but no garlic taste. Thru needed salt or something. There was no salt on the table. We ordered chocolate mousse which was supposed to have whipped cream on it. It didn't. Our waiter was lovely and tried hard but he was very inexperienced. He gave us a discount on my husband's meal. I went up to the manager who deleted the third $75 charge. One waitress said she had been working since they opened for breakfast early that morning. It was sub par. Bad kitchen management. We came on a sunday for brunch, no wait since we made reservations but there wasn't a lot of people waiting if you go early. We ordered a monte cristo and short rib bene. Don't be lured by the professional photos, the food leaves lots to be desired. From cafeteria-esc pizza and a basic burger with artificial cheese that you'd get from a low level burger joint, this place is lack luster at best. The pizza was swimming in cheese and it literally tasted like plastic cheese that is on cafeteria style pizza from a lunch lady. So so bad. The only server/host/food runner they had was busting his booty on a Friday night. They also only had one bar tender who did a fairly decent job pumping out drinks. Although it did take 15mins to get ours, he was hustling as best he could. Definitely pass on this place even if staying at the hotel, it's just not worth it. read more

Beautiful setting located in the Marriott Bonvoy on Garden Street downtown SLO. I had the short rib Benedict that was savory and loaded with meat. It was served with your choice of salad, fruit or potatoes. We also enjoyed the French Toast with lemon whipped cream and berries. The toast was very light and fluffy. Came for breakfast on Mon morning and found they have changed their service on weekdays to more of a grab and go, limited menu where you order and pay first at the counter, but they do still bring your food out to you. Had the 3 egg breakfast with salad, sausage and toast, which was delicious! Service was friendly and fairly prompt considering there was one server doing everything. Certainly a more efficient service but could get a bit backed up if several people came in at once. We started with the Pig & Fig pizza, when it came out we immediately noticed there weren't any Figs on it. We asked about them and were told the Figs were chopped up in the sauce? The base is a tomato sauce, we definitely didn't taste any fig. Very disappointing for $28. My husband had the burger, it was good, but messy. The fries were delicious. I had the short rib, it was good, but the carrots on the side were burnt. I had the absolute pleasure of being served by Natalie at the oak grill, and let me tell you, she is amazing. From the moment I sat down, she greeted me with a warm smile and was eager to recommend drinks based on what I like. She took the time to really listen and then suggested a few new cocktails I had never heard of. Every drink she made was spot-on, and you could tell she was passionate about her craft. What really stood out was how she went above and beyond--she didn't just hand me a drink and walk away. She engaged me in a conversation about the ingredients, the history behind some of the cocktails, and even gave me tips on how to recreate the cocktails at home. Her knowledge and enthusiasm were contagious, and it made the whole experience feel special. The whole bar felt her energy and the entire bar had a great time interacting with Natalie. I left with a new favorite drink, a ton of cocktail ideas, and a huge appreciation for Natalie's attention to detail. She truly knows how to elevate the bar experience. We spent time in this lovely restaurant daily during our stay, whether for drinks at the bar or dining. Food is VERY good, great cocktails. Bartender we had the first 2 nights was GREAT, she was very attentive and engaging and made perfect drinks... particularly the smoked Old Fashioned. The guy who tended bar on Friday night was not engaging, appeared to not enjoy his job, very slow (hardly anyone in the bar) and made okay drinks at best. The interior is pretty basic, with a beautiful bar, almost floor to ceiling wall of bottles. I was here for breakfast & have zero complaints. Super friendly wait staff, prompt service, perfectly prepared over medium eggs, bacon, & generously buttered sourdough toast I substituted for potatoes. The chicken was so dry it was sucking all the moisture out of my mouth. The couscous was very under-seasoned. Whole plate was a miss. They should at least say on the menu what kind of scallops they are and how many you get. The dish tasted great my wife said but she would not have ordered that if she knew how nearly non existent they would be. My pizza was good and plentiful and my daughter's chicken sando was huge (super thick chicken breast that was a little oversized for the bun) but they really should be more generous with the scallops.
