Update: The food is still a solid 5 stars. It's the service and atmosphere that have gone negative. I think we went 3 times this years vacation. The first time they were very busy and they only had 2 waitresses working. The big problem is there were tables available, but they hadn't been cleaned. Of the 2 waitress one of them apparently refuses to clean. She'd stand around doing nothing between handling her tables walking right past dirty tables. The ither lady was trying, but she was very inefficient. She'd clean 1 thing off a table before getting distracted by something else. She'd then talk to a table for a couple of minutes before helping another table, and then 1 more item off the table. We waited almost 30 minutes for an available table. To top it off they have a fridge or something that is buzzing very loudly and is massively annoying. The next time we at least got seated in a few minutes, but there were still dirty tables. The 3rd time we got a different waitress and she was by far the best. The food is still excellent though, so still recommend. Overall the new rating is 3 stars, due to service and atmosphere. If it wasn't for the excellent food it would be a 2 star and an avoid recommendation. That being said I'll most likely be back next year. read more

If you are looking for a place with a good atmosphere and kind staff members, I'd recommend skipping a visit to the Lunch Box. As soon as we walked in with a group of 8 the elderly waitress yelled at us saying that there was absolutely no way that we could all sit together even though the place was practically empty and she was the same waitress serving both of our tables. When we ordered our drink for ourselves and the other two people in our party that were about to walk in, the waitress again yelled at us saying that she wasn't going to remember an additional coffee and Diet Pepsi and walked off. Then when we asked if we could give the chef our gluten free bread as an alternative for toast, because myself and my two sisters have celiac disease, she told us and said that they would not make toast for us. I could not believe the rudeness we experienced, and the next time we come up to Bellaire we will NOT be returning to the Lunch Box. Then when you order four meals, and it takes over 30 minutes to make, especially when one meal is literally just a side of bacon, unreal. By all means do not come here, and seek a different place for an all around better dining experience. *update: when a lady with 3 people at her table offered to help the waitress she looked at them upset and yelled at them saying "I'll get to you when I get to you," when she was just attempting to offer her assistance. Then when a small family came in with two kids at their table who were literally silent, said something out loud, she looked at them all pissed and screamed, "HEY, NO!" Was excited the eat brunch here this morning with a guest to our cabin on Torch Lake . We went in and was greeted by a Very Rude Waitress. She sat us at the table Right next to the door then proceeded to yell at me to Not Close the door - it was 58 degrees here today- then proceeded to tell me no to everything I asked - rudely . The Lunch Box appears to be the only restaurant in town with breakfast. Well there is a bakery but here is full service. So we were looking forward to a nice dine-in breakfast. Social distancing and masks required, we arrived just about lunch time but thankfully their breakfast menu goes until 2:00 PM closing. We were seated immediately. My wife ordered coffee and I opted for Raspberry Tea, which was very good. My wife ordered a cherry almond muffin. It was warm, juicy and loaded with Michigan cherries. I did have to try a piece. Delightful! She ordered the Hobble Pobble skillet with ham, eggs, cheese, potatoes, onions and peppers. She enjoyed it very much. I opted for the Country Style Eggs Benedict. I have eaten several varieties of this, the common bond being poached eggs and sausage gravy. This plate had a potato pancake on bottom, sausage party, two poached eggs on top and covered with sausage gravy. Sausage and gravy were great but I am not a fan of potato pancakes as a part. They have a great biscuit which would have made a better base. Also the eggs were slightly overcooked. I prefer the yolk running and mixing with other ingredients. Great food! The place is on the smaller side and there are only 2 waitresses handling the tables and cash register. I can see how some people would be upset with how the wait time is longer and the staff seems direct. However, if you are patient and respectful and go with their flow - you won't have issues. They have their way of doing things that works for them and if you want to change those ways and they so no - don't get upset for something silly. They are the only breakfast spot in town... OK so yes I encountered the exasperated owner/ server who seems to be dragging this place down in the reviews. She is somewhat direct but I do not take offense because actual rude people do not exist in this part of Michigan and honestly, in this lazy Joe Biden welfare do-nothing economy I am happy to see anybody working this hard at a low level job so give her a break. We went for breakfast as it was walking distance from our airbnb. We were seated promptly up at the bar area and were greeted warmly by the servers. The meal was delicious, hearty and great portions. Throughout our meal, we were treated to laughter, jokes, banter and a description of the area as well as directions for photogenic places at torch lake. My friends and I were in the area for a much needed girls trip. We went there day 1 and were told at 11am that they weren't seating anyone else for the day. We thought we would try again the second day. When I told her we had 6 she said "well you will have to wait at least 45 min". I asked if we could split, she said no because she wouldn't sit 2 people at a 4 top. I asked if we could do 3 and 3... she said I don't know if I can do that and you will get your food at different times.... I said please let me know if that is a possibility and at that point she told me to go outside and wait. As a group we decided that we should just go somewhere else, I let her know that we would just eat somewhere else and she rudely told me it would have just been a few minutes and that the closest restaurant was in another town... This place has really solid food, and really friendly service. Half of the people that came in while we were there were greeted by name, which is awesome. You can sit at the bar, or there's plenty of seating if you have a bigger crowd. I got a breakfast skillet and my friend got the small plate caesar (which is ironically very large). Had breakfast at the Lunch Box today. It was full to overflowing. From what I could tell, there was a cook, a busser, and a waitress/hostess/cashier/manager. It took a very long time to be waited on, then served, then paid-out. Annoyingly so. But the food is always good (I got the Hopple Popple). This review is more toward the clientele: breakfast is more of a social thing (otherwise you could go to McDonald's around the corner) and a lot of you need to leave your ego at home and bring your manners. I don't know why the staffing was short, but I knew that going in, and despaired for humanity by the way the waitress was treated. 10 out of 10 I'll go back (but maybe not on a Saturday morning!). read more

I love this little Bellaire gem! It's a classic diner. It's a bit small, bar seating, and has everything a diner offers in all the best ways! Unfortunately, during my trip to Bellaire, I had horrendous cell service so didn't get a chance to take many pictures, but you know what a classic breakfast looks like, right? My wife got biscuits and gravy with eggs-over-easy and hash browns on the side. No complaints! The biscuits were fluffy and tasted homemade, because they probably were! I ordered an omelette with peppers, onions, ham, and salsa with hash browns on the side. Wonderful! The veggies were cooked perfectly; had a crunch, weren't mushy, but were cooked through. The salsa was fresh. The hash browns were amazing! The crust on the outside was well done and crunchy, the inside being soft and delightful. And what's a good diner without great coffee? Check. I got a second cup to go! They even have a Himalayan sea salt grinder! Bougie for a cute lil place like The Lunchbox. Love! The staff are great! Attentive and friendly, but, being a diner, some were fairly old school. I appreciated a server putting a total Brosky douche canoe in his place after he gave her an attitude about the wait. Unfortunately, Bellaire has become pretty touristy so you might need to be patient with these wonderful staff members and seating. They're working their tails off and the food is worth the wait. If you're in Bellaire for a weekend or for a week or if you live in the area and are just hungry for breakfast or lunch, you have to stop here. This place has been around for many years and always makes great food. Highly recommend Hopple Popple for breakfast. It's an amazing skillet type of breakfast plate and it is done with great speed as well. I had a breakfast sandwich in there the last time I went in and it was delicious it was on special but it had eggs(of course), avocado, tomato, ham, and onion included for a wonderful price. There is a few tables outside for enjoyment of the beautiful Northern Michigan outdoors while you eat. The wait staff is always so friendly whenever I am in here. Always makes me feel welcomed and gives another reason among many to come back and enjoy good food and good times. One thing I always like to do at restaurants, is to ask the waiter/waitress what their decision of food would be. Sometimes it's a good recommendation, and other times it can be bad. Tiny place with great food! We've been in Bellaire for years, but had never eaten here until this morning. I'm glad we finally did. My husband's corn beef hash was delicious and not greasy at all. My breakfast skillet with potatoes, eggs, ham and veggies was also fantastic and super fresh. Another table's eggs Benedict looked equally good. My only complaint isn't really a complaint at all...the portions are enormous. We honestly could have split one dish. Despite some reviews here mentioning bad or rude service, our server (Sydney I think) couldn't have been nicer or more attentive. If it's a weekend or high season you'll probably have to wait, but the food is worth it. read more
