With no soccer games on the schedule for once, we figured it was the perfect chance to swing by and support some personal friends, the Camacho family and their classic Westside spot, Lupita's. Let me tell you: this place is pure time travel. If you grew up in the 80s on the Westside, Lupita's is straight-up St. Elmo's Fire meets San Antonio breakfast culture. No joke...it was one of my favorite spots as a kid, and stepping inside again felt like walking right back into that era. I went with the Chorizo and Egg plate and added a carne guisada taco a la carte because how could I not? And of course, that Tex-Mex restaurant coffee hit exactly the way it should. I haven't been here in awhile, and for some reason it's just not the same. The tortillas were cold and starting to get hard already. You can definitely tell they weren't made fresh. My family has eaten here for a few years now and often times when we have people come to visit they like to recommend this place. The staff here is friendly, helpful, and attentive. They made sure we had everything we needed and always made sure our drinks were filled. Our server was funny as well. They served salsa and chips while we waited. Chips tasted fresh, and the salsa was pretty good. The food itself was decent. The migas were alright wished it had something else added to it (maybe pico). I did put some salsa on it and did help with the taste. The potatoes were nothing special to me, but the beans were really good today. I'm glad I ordered bean/cheese taco with it; was very good. My brother ordered nachos, and he liked a lot along with a few tacos. My other family members had enchiladas, and they would definitely recommend anyone to come and try. My family and I have been coming here since I was 6 or 7 years old. The owners even remember us even though we are OOOOLDER! LOL! It is consistently good! The carne guisada is the BEST in TX. I should know! I always order carne guisada wherever I go and am always disappointed because there is no carne guisada like Lupita's. Another favorite thing is the warm salsa. Others might think it is simple, but that's the brilliant thing about all their food, the simplicity makes it delicious. Too many restaurants use too many spices to "add flavor" but in the end, it is too salty and with too much cumino. Lupita's let the ingredients speak for themselves. My mom always gets the Mexican plate and she is never disappointed. The rice and beans have such a good flavor. I know this seems like an ode to Carne Guisada, but whatever you try, you will not be disappointed. Writing this review may bring back a little nostalgia, but either way, I heart Lupita's. read more

First the waitress got the taco wrong then has the audacity to touch my tacos with no gloves right in front of me then hands me the plate to explain why she touch my tacos to see if they got the order right. I am surprised so many low ratings. When we come to SA we love to go to Lupitas. I usually get the Carne Guisada Tacos and maybe Barbacoa Taco. If they have it usually on weekends I may get the Menudo, everything is good. My wife usually gets the Huevos Rancheros which she enjoys. Service though usually a little crowded especially in the morning has always been good. The atmosphere is nice there are dead animals and fish on the walls, which our grandkids love to look at. The plate came with rice and beans. The beans were so thick. As if they had been served cold that's exactly how they tasted. The rice looked old and hard. It was absolutely disgusting. Food is okay, overcharged for mediocre quality. On top of food being okay... food was almost cold to the touch and when sent back to kitchen, waitstaff had bad attitudes. Upon paying for check at register, the owner and operator tells me in person after he gave me the total and run my card that he was also applying a credit card charge of .85 cents to my ticket on top of the total. This fee should not be the customers responsibility, but rather the shop owners responsibility for running a business and processing payments. This is bullshit on so many levels. This restaurant has been a location to stop at for the ages, but in one foul swoop, this owner ruined it. To Mr. Camacho the original owner of the restaurant, I had respect for but his son is a lazy ass scumbag, who sits on his ass at the front table of the restaurant, thinking that he's actually making a difference. Get a real job fool. A business is made by the patrons not by your daddy's legacy. Take care of your customers and stop overcharging or charging for tariffs that you should be paying yourself! Finally, your nasty restrooms need an upgrade and need to be made handicap or disabled accessible. ADA will be notified. Soap and paper towel dispensers suck or are not even functional. read more

I have been going to this place since I was a child. It's my favorite bean and cheese taco which is saying a lot. Their breakfast tacos are big--about twice the size of a Taco Cabana bean and cheese taco. These are probably the best refried beans I've ever tasted. Cheese enchiladas are also amazing. Carne Guisada tacos are also the best I've ever had. Chorizo and egg tacos are delicious. I love that they have a drive through. I believe it's only open in the morning. Stopped in to have some breakfast and ordered the huevos rancheros. Average food. Didn't knock my socks off but wasn't horrible. Lacking flavor. It was $4.25 for the plate. You May say, " what do you expect for $4.25?" I say, do your best to dazzle your customers with great flavors and quality. It's frustrating because it's not difficult to elevate these simple dishes. This is a truly great local Mexican restaurant owned and operated by a mom-and-pop pair. The food is top notch - the chips & salsa were especially tasty - as well as sized well. While our waitress was friendly and engaging, she did need us to remind her about a few items we'd ordered. To her credit, she was attentive without being overbearing. Today went to buy 5 carne guisada took them home and they were so salty, took a bite and threw it in the garbage my wife took a bite and into the garbage, call Lupitas ask to get reimbursed and put it on my card, the cashier called Rosie and took it to the back. Came back with partial payment asked why and told me I ate two. The owners have a really bad attitude they have a body guard that can't get up from the table, I don't recommend this place to anyone food is bad and expensive and if you go you been warned. Lupita's is my childhood Mexican restaurant, and you would understand my undying love if you tasted her phenomenal carne guisada--served generously and piping hot with spicy gravy oozing out of the sides of that warm, handmade flour tortilla. Just the aroma outside the doors is enough to drive a woman or man wild. And boy did those aromas ever get my heart pounding this morning. We had just exited the vehicle, when the scent of freshly made tortillas hit my nose and gently lulled me into a deep trance. Before I knew it, I'd seated myself and, like with any super heavy, greasy, overly abundant meal, ordered a Diet Coke. ;) While the beauty of Lupita's is her carne guisada, I felt the need to stretch as a human being today, so I ordered the migas con huevo a la Mexicana. For those in the "not know," this is Spanish for "I want some more, please." But all jokes aside, migas are pan-fried cut-up corn tortillas with eggs. "A la Mexicana" simply means that they're prepared with sautéed onions, tomatoes, and jalapeños. As simple as this dish is, every place that serves it comes up with a slightly different flavor. Whether it's the type of oil used, or the particular way the server looks at it before taking it to the table, or the type of magic the cook sprinkles on top, each rendition I've ever had has just been different. Lupita's take is a crunchier corn tortilla and a heftier haul of onions, which equals THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR ALL THIS DELICIOUSITY! (I just made up that word. You're welcome!) I had planned on ordering just the migas, but I decided to splurge and get a double dose of corn tortilla by putting the corn tortilla mixture in a corn tortilla because this is AMERICA and YOLO! Then the sweet server happily recommended the addition of cheese, and well, who am I to deny anyone his or her happiness? PILE IT ON, MA'AM! PILE. IT. ON. I've noticed that Lupita's has not felt the love from a lot of Yelp reviewers, and while I totally believe every restaurant has its not-so-great days, this place is like my second home and I've been a faithful customer for decades. What's kept me coming back is great food. Now, I can't vouch for everything on the menu because I haven't tried everything but there are a few staples that Lupita's does beautifully. I'll leave you with these recommendations: 1. Carne Guisada Tacos on Flour--these are magic. 2. Chicken Puffy Tacos--the corn tortilla is perfectly fried and not super greasy like other puffies. 3. Bean & Cheese with Bacon Tacos on Flour--classic and well done! 4. The migas con huevo a la Mexicana--crispy, flavorful, and AWESOME! 5. Tacos de Tripa (prepared extra crispy)--add some of Lupita's incredible tomatillo salsa on top for added greatness! 6. Barbacoa Taco on Corn or Flour--Excellent, tender barbacoa and you can't go wrong with either type of homemade tortilla. Both are insanely good! 7. Gorditas--Have these with picadillo, shredded chicken, or just with butter. They'll make your toes curl. Love this place the Lengua is the best. I highly recommend you eat one Lengua taco every time you eat here. You will be hooked. Have been coming here over 30 years . People complain about prices but my wife has a Mexican restaurant, it is true, in order to keep eating the good things in life it will cost. Think about it when you vote in 2024. The service and food is always great. I use to eat here almost everyday. It was rare I went 2 days without showing up. The place is clean like it was over the years. This place has gone down hill. We have been coming for yours and the food has been mediocre recently. But today was the eye opener. Our waitress was amazing and I wish I had gotten her name because she was super sweet and understanding. However the owner, that's another story. Even though we didn't drink our drinks, had made us pay. They have an old school Ice machine and I'm more than sure that thing is filled with mold because that's what the ice smelled like. Each drink our party ordered had ice. 2 waters and the other 3 sodas. The drinks with water is obviously what had the strongest taste. The soda mixed with the ice is why you couldn't taste it much. My daughter opened her cup to see why it had a funky taste and condensation from the ceiling falls in her cup and a few minutes later on her shirt. At this point we all decided to taste since both waters had a weird taste and that's when we realized the ice had that taste. We let the owner know about the ceiling and his words "it does that, it's hot outside so it's going to happen" my mom tried to tell him that it's not from the air vents it's from the ceiling and maybe it's condensation but that shouldn't be happening from the ceiling other than where the vents are . He started talking over her and said "there's nothing I can do about it I can't control it" I said "you can control that, that ceiling is going to fall". The ceiling literally has portions of the squares pushing through, mold on the vent, and to top it off we end up seeing a towel on the ground to collect that condensation from falling. The place is dark inside so you can't really see much. He was rude and even told us not to come back because I said we shouldn't even pay for the drinks. Mind you 2 waters and 3 sodas he still charged us $10+ . The ceiling is going to cave in soon and that's a lawsuit waiting to happen. read more

I wanted good tortillas. Excellent! But I asked for breakfast tacos and told that it was closed already on Sunday. So ordered mine and wife's taco's for lunch. Looked over while waiting reading the menu and breakfast tacos are until 1pm. I asked about that it was before 1pm and was told "yeah but we closed early". So now no more to go when close at taco time . I saw that the taco's between taco's are inconsistent between. Some where skinny and some where fat.8 taco's for $24+ including 2 bean and cheese. Came by and got some tacos to go. When we got home I found out apparently I ordered the bacon, egg, and hair taco. It was a Sunday morning so everyone was waking up late. I hadn't eaten right away, but when I did was when I noticed the hair in my food. We hadn't eaten much of the food so we took it all back with our receipt. This is a place my father really likes to go after his doctor appointments. Service is great always friendly & fast. Waitresses are extremely kind & always make sure you enjoyed your food. Lately service has been terrible, I have been to Lupitas for over 30 years and I think I am done eating there. My daughter got charge by mistake 600 dollars a few months ago, and they weren't even sorry about it. Yesterday they didn't give me my bank card back to me cuz there are so short staff.
