Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery in operation since 1941 is a signature restaurant in San Antonio, TX Historic Market Square. Having grown up in San Antonio, I have literally been to Mi Tierra's 100s of times. When you walk into the restaurant you experience immediate sensory overload (so much to see where it is hard to focus)...papel picado strung everywhere...in different colors...in different textures...metallic and paper...wow wow wow!!! In addition, there are artful configurations clustered with lots of color and spiritual references highlighting the Mexican American culture. Also, there are pinatas strung from the ceiling in metallic colors, which is a bit unusual for pinatas (usually made from paper). The restaurant also has stained glass windows and a mural. On this particular occasion, I was in the restaurant for bakery goods. Mi Tierra specializes in Mexican pastries. It looked like it would be a quick in and out, however, with so many sweets, every customer asked questions and deftly decided on their sweets de jour. Since I waited for a bit, I decided on three...peanut brittle (the hubs said he had not had any since childhood), pecan praline (for me) and a pecan pound cake (split between the hubs and myself). Attentive service was friendly and sweet for our must go to place for pastries before hitting the RiverWalk. The wedding cookies were so good we bought a few walked around the Mexican market and came back for more. The pumpkin and sweet potatoes empanadas just came out of the oven and were really flavorful. I decided to stay in the city longer to check out this place. This restaurant is huge and the wait was 45 minutes on a Sunday afternoon. We used our waiting time to stroll through the Mercado across the way. Once the table was ready, my friend got a text. I always wanted to try menudo every Mexican restaurant I go to. But not until I saw the sign on the back cover. This restaurant is under the same owner as Pico de Gallo. Omg. I just had their menudo the day before. No thanks. I decided to order fajita chicken salad. The portion was really small. The food only filled a half of the fried salad bowl. I asked to put cheese on the side. It may had it look more but I don't eat cheese as much. I was glad that dressing was on the side. Which was too salty for me. So, if the food was the same as other chain, we could have eaten there which was closer to the hotel. But I noticed the difference was the servers. Our waitress was cuter and very polite. This was a recommendation from many, so I had to go. Walk in and there it is...the panaderia (bakery) counter. The hostess was a little drab but as I was walked in to be seated, you could feel the upbeat mood. Note that if you're dining solo, they will push hard to seat you at a dark diner type counter to stare at the kitchen area even if you have a reservation, so don't give in unless you're starving and that's your last resort. The colorful decor hits you and you're transported. I ordered the "Mexican Dinner" with chicken enchilada, pork tamal, beef taco with beans and rice. Also had a side order of fresh handmade tortillas. Paloma to wash it all down. Everything tasted great. My server was excellent. Patient and helpful with recommendations. People say when in San Antonio, do like the San Antonian's. Nobody really says that. I mean, I just did, but I also just made it up. With that being said, let's make up a review. Except I'm not actually making the review up, I've been to the place. Both San Antonio and the restaurant moments away from being reviewed. I'm always down for solid Mexican food. It's always pretty damn good. I mean, at the pure base of things, it's basically the same few ingredients, just different vessels to get it to your mouth. I'm never bad about that. I love transportation. Mi Tierra was a pretty great looking place. Plenty of space, a nice outside waiting area, plus a bakery. I have never been to a place with a bakery that I didn't like. It seemed like a very authentic place, and that's coming from a resident of Michigan. A resident that eats Taco Bell. A resident who eats Taco Bell and think's THAT'S authentic Mexican. The first thing I noticed was that this place did not seem to serve burritos. Not a marker really for me, but it was something I've never came across before. I also thought that you were stuck ordering enchiladas or tacos in a meal type of setting. Upon further questioning, you can order a la cart. That was a relief. I ended up ordering the enchiladas Verdes because sometimes I ignore my color palate and go for green. And because I can't just stop eating one form of meat, cheese, and sauce, I ordered a taco. Actually, I just ordered a taco because I wanted a dryer enchilada. Or did I order the enchiladas because I wanted a wetter taco...I don't know anymore. Anywho, I ground beef, American style taco. Now, I've always been a big fan of chips and salsa. Some salsa hits, some miss. Some salsa is pureed and is basically red water. Some salsa is just a full tomato. I like my salsa like I like my orange juice. With extra calcium. Wait. Mild pulp. That's it. This salsa pretty much hit those notes. Had good flavor and a little spice left to linger. The main course came out and everything looked delicious. Green enchiladas looked exactly like I expected. However, it took me a moment to realize I was not looking at a burrito...but instead, my taco. It was served a peculiar way. wrapped, seam down, with a little bit of the meat on top, pico and lettuce on the outside, next to it. It was a burrito peacocking as a taco. I've never seem this display before, and I have been to many Taco Bell and non-Taco Bell restaurants. The taste was pretty good, though. All the taco flavor in a burrito jacket. After a very short wait we were seated. Our waitress was all smiles and provided amiable service. The chips and salsa were above average, and so was the house margarita I ordered as I looked over the menu. I ordered the Enchiladas Verdes (per the menu: Chicken Enchiladas topped with Green Tomatillo Sauce, Monterrey Jack Cheese and Sour Cream. Served with Guacamole, Spanish Rice and Refried Beans). When they say "hot plate" here, they really mean it. I enjoyed the enchiladas although I didn't think they were any better than what I've had many times elsewhere. The same could be said of the rice and beans. The horchata, however, was fantastic. Made in-house, it was among the best I've ever had. This is the epitome of what a horchata should be and definitely my favorite part of my meal. We passed on the mariachi who were roaming the floor of this huge restaurant, requesting $10 per song. Shout out to Carmen for a wonderful experience and great service. The place is full of color and culture mixed with a tourist type vibe. The parking is very tight and oddly placed so just fyi in case you drive a truck or big suv. The enchiladas poblanos was a great recommendation by Carmen and spot on the description. The chicken was tender, flavorful, and nicely seasoned. The corn tortillas were great tasting and paired fantastic with the chicken. The poblano sauce was fresh and light and paired nice with the crema and enchiladas. The queso fresco and rice at the bottom gave it a wonderful texture and delicious flavor combined. The pastries I've tried were also good and worth trying especially the strawberry cheesecake. The crust on the cheesecake was different but it worked and was very tasty. This bakery speaks tradition! Its been there for a long time and is open late. Its cute and oozes Mexican vibes with its decor. As soon as you enter, you are greeted with a boatload of goodies. They have a casual setup in the front where you can purchase their baked goods and coffee. They also have a restaurant offering tex mex meals and drinks. The baked goods array is huge and a bit overwhelming for a novice like me. Nothing was named so it was a guess game. We asked another person in line and she told us to have the concha which is essentially sweet bread. Got that and some Mexican hot chocolate. Both were basic yet yumm. I have been here several times. It's one of those staple tourist places that you have to visit when you are in town. Service is fast, place is decently clean for the foot traffic, the servers all look happy and eager to work. I ordered tortilla soup, I usually like it with a cup of rice and avocado like most places serve it. They have everything you could possibly want an then some!! We were there for business and some pleasure too.
