We happened to already be in the city that day and somehow got lucky finding a reservation close to the time we were already nearby, so we knew we had to take our chance! The whole place is beautiful and has such a cozy, classic Chicago feel. I would absolutely come back, but next time I really want to sit outside because their outdoor patio is gorgeous. The staff was also super friendly and really helpful with recommendations throughout the night. We started with the warm Parker House rolls, which were so soft, fluffy, buttery, and delicious. Then we shared the vodka rigatoni, and the portion was definitely big enough for two people to split. So creamy, comforting, and really good. Of course we had to end with one of their classics, the sticky date cake, and OMG. Soooo good. Warm, rich, sweet, and the perfect way to finish dinner. Definitely worth finally checking off my list, and I'd happily come back again, especially for a patio night!

A brief background; been in Chicago for about 15 years. Heard of Au Cheval back in 2015 or 16. Took a while to give it a shot and went; wait for 2 hours. Hmmmmm, didn't work out. Tried a second time 2 or 3 years later. Still didn't happen. Tried a third time when I had a friend visiting from overseas....wait time was just so long and just didn't have the 'desire' to wait that long. I think for the first time in my life, I had to kick myself as I wish I would have waited the very first time. Had my nephew visiting me from out of town. While I did want to take him to Au Cheval, with the limited time I had, I did not want to wait. I happened to go on their website and noticed that they now offer reservations. That was one of the most beautiful sights I had seen in a long time. Not only do I get to take my nephew out to Au Cheval, but I myself finally get to try the burgers here that have been the talk of the town and were rated the best burger in the United States of America for many years. My nephew absolutely devoured and loved the burger. He was in heaven. I cannot say I was not in heaven myself because the burger was absolutely epic, but that's not just what this review is about. This review is about one of the few joints in America that I have come across and that provided the level of attention to detail and went way above and beyond what I would have ever imagined in my wildest dreams to make this a memorable lunch. She had gone with my mother-in-law as well, so it was my mother-in-law, my nephew, and I. My mother-in-law is a vegetarian, and we figured we would go ahead and get the fries. What we did not know was that the fries are in beef tallow or have some beef seasoning (I forget), so in the end, she was not able to eat anything. My nephew and I just ordered each a burger. Our server proactively brought a house salad, which was vegetarian, and he said, "This is on the house. You guys enjoy the burgers." That, honestly, is a level of service that goes beyond usual service, but there was human empathy involved here. After a while, the head chef comes out, super friendly, and asks how everything was. He then says, "I heard you've been waiting 10 years over here, and I hope it was worth it." He made sure my mother and I were comfortable, and he made sure my nephew was comfortable. The level of service and care here was very special, and I personally appreciated it from the heart. For me, it was a memory built with my nephew and my mother-in-law, one that is going to stick with us for the rest of our lives. Not to mention, I am getting hungry right now, so I need to make a reservation and go down there tomorrow.

He never came back to the table to check on us. I got the steak frites (medium rare) and the steak was cold to the touch and raw inside. It was so gross that I couldn't eat any of it and told the bus boy to take it off my bill when he came to take our plates. He asked me if I wanted it wrapped up as it was completely untouched and I was like no, thanks. The frites were some dehydrated potato shoe string thing that was extremely over salted and inconsistent texture. Some were crispy and some were soggy. You have to buy bread (there are 2 options) at around $15 each. Luckily there are a ton of better restaurants in the area to get a good meal with decent service.

I've been dining at Luxbar for years -- it's the kind of place that earns its reputation quietly and consistently. The food holds up, the room has energy, and on most nights the whole machine runs smoothly enough that you don't think too hard about the individual parts keeping it together. But I kept thinking about one of them. There's -- or rather, was -- a young woman at the host stand. Long dark hair, warm smile, the kind of presence that makes you feel genuinely welcomed rather than processed. I visited probably four or five times over a stretch of months, and she was there for the first several. Every time, she remembered something. She moved with grace under pressure. On one occasion I watched a table lay into her over a seating mix-up that was clearly not her fault, and she handled it with more composure than most seasoned front-of-house veterans I've observed. I actually found myself catching her eye afterward and offering a small smile -- a quiet I saw that, and you did well. She returned it like she was used to receiving those small gestures as substitutes for real support. That's what stayed with me, honestly. She was charming and capable, but she was also alone in a way that felt structural. I watched her scan the room more than once looking for backup -- a manager, a runner, anyone -- and find no one. She improvised. She smiled through it. She apologized on behalf of customers who should have been apologizing to her. And still, somehow, she made the experience feel seamless. The visits after she was no longer there were fine. The restaurant is still Luxbar. But something easy and warm was gone from the door. I ran into her recently -- quite by chance, in the neighborhood -- and we spoke briefly. She mentioned, almost offhandedly, that she'd been let go. The reason given, as she understood it: she had handed a to-go order to waiting carry-out guests to clear the entryway so she could better attend to the dining room. No manager in sight. A line forming. A packed floor to manage. She made a call -- the kind of practical, guest-forward call you'd want your host making -- and it cost her the job. I want to be fair to Luxbar because I do love this restaurant. I dont normally use google reviews but I'd be doing a disservice to anyone who reads my blog reviews if I didn't say this plainly: that young woman was doing the work of several people, doing it with grace, doing it with kindness, and she deserved better than to be left exposed like that. The job of management is to make sure their people aren't quietly drowning while smiling at guests. That accountability shouldn't fall on a host who was simply trying to keep things moving when no one else would. She was one of the loveliest parts of walking through that door. I adore Luxbar! Truly one of my all time favorite spots in the city. From the second you walk in to the moment you leave, every detail is on point. The customer service is next level, and the vibe works for literally any occasion: date night drinks at the bar, dinner with family, or Sunday brunch with the girls! Their espresso martinis and dirty martinis are the best in the city (absolutely no exaggeration) and that's not even touching on all the other fabulous cocktails they serve. And the food? Love coming here for the Fried Chiken!!! It always puts a smile on my face! Overall this is a great spot if you are in the triangle. The patio in the summer is always a treat to sit on and the service is usually spot on. However, there are so many great restaurants in the triangle that this is seldom ever my first pick because it is kind of on the far corner of the action. I would much rather go sit on the patio at Carmines, Gibsons, or Tavern before this place. I give this place four stars because the last time I was here my server was not very attentive and spilled a drink on my coworker. I have drank in a few bars, 10 tops! I may never have the opportunity to hand out a 5 star again and I am proud they're my first. There is no way I can ever come up with enough congratulatory quips. I spent my first weekend ever in Chicago and all three nights we went to this bar and sat in amazement at the speed in which they worked and the team work between bar keeper and wait staff. Easily they turned 300 to 500 if not more covers a night? Never not once we're they in the weeds. We on average tipped them 40% and we were drinking $14 martini's with an average in house time of 4 hours so the tabs were healthy! The people watching was "off the hook"! AMAZING! My girlfriends and I stopped in for some food before we headed to the next stop of the night. The sliders were amazing!! But what makes this review a 1 star is the bar. I know this sounds bad to say but our bartender was like 75yrs old and he moved like it. And to make things worse were all the nasty drunk old men who wouldn't leave us alone at out table! I went to the bar and asked the server for a little help getting the creepos away from us and they both shrugged their shoulders and walked away! The servers response was "it gets worse in tavern" Really??!! Never again - too bad cause those sliders were good. After an email from a manager we went back....again luv the sliders!! I love this bar. The prices are reasonable for the area, the inside is comfortable. Most importantly, the bartenders seem like they have been transplanted from an unpretentious Lincoln Park bar and didn't get the memo that they are supposed to be overpriced and serve tiny drinks (like Hugo's), or rude with 'eat or get out' rules (like Tavern on Rush). I have brought several friends who were used to going to Tavern on Rush and suggested Lux Bar. They were amazed. Especially when the attractive wait staff actually was polite and didn't treat them like walking wallets. The food is good, not great. But I don't really go here for a top end meal, that is what a restaurant is for. read more

Maybe I'm biased because I live just around the corner and tend visit quite frequently, but I've never had a bad experience at Luxbar. Loveee the Chopped California with salmon, Kobe Sliders, Veggie Burger, Calamari, and Mac n' Cheese. Oh, and the truffle fries are delicious, of course. I'm a bit of a martini snob, and their dirty vodka martinis with bleu cheese olives are always right on. The special pumpkin martini during fall/winter is UNREAL. I had a terrible experience at this restaurant tonight. I received a raw steak when I requested a medium. It took over an hour to receive a flavorless and a poorly cooked steak. I sent it back, and they came out with it mooing once again. I sent it back a final time and by now I have waited an extra 30 minutes for them to cook my steak. Lamb Chops were delicious, cooked to perfection, and I finished my meal with the Cheddar-Kissed Apple Tart which was truly *Chef's Kiss*. The servers were all very kind and addressed me by my name which I didn't realize how warm that felt until I experienced it at Adorn - the little things certainly matter and I appreciated the added touch. The ambiance is peaceful and the lighting is intimate enough for the perfect date or a solo evening with a good book (which is what I did that evening). Adorn is a must try when in Chicago! I was glad the food lived up to my expectations as not all restaurants in 5 star hotels do.

I'm speculating, of course, but it seems (with the exception of one or two servers), all the hosts and waitstaff seem overly stiff and performative, like they're not really seeing the customer, just reading from a script. Which, you know, wouldn't be so bad, but then the food has to be excellent. And it's not anymore. Today, at late-morning breakfast, with only a quarter of the place full, it took 10 minutes after being seated to be attended to. The first runner grumbled when I asked for cream for my coffee. The items I ordered were lukewarm, like they came from the buffet. The second runner completely forgot my request for a few condiments. If I'm in a diner, so what? But, not here, especially in a great city like Chicago. Sigh... Definitely still prefer the look and feel from before the remodel. It's much colder now, like the chicken sausages that came to my table.
