A great place to dine at if you want something else other than pizza and pasta! They offer a menu that has a variety of roman dishes that will surely cater to your taste buds, depending on your mood. I was here for lunch after a morning visit at the Colosseum... It was empty at first, but then it started to get more and more packed within the hour. Calamari was very lightly breaded and delicious with the squeezed lemon on top so it didn't taste greasy at all. Also got the roasted veal and braised oxtail in a tomato-y stew. Roasted veal was ok and a bit too lean but sauce was good. The braised oxtail was tender and definitely a comfort food for the rainy Rome weather that day. This restaurant almost single-handedly ruined my vacation in Italy. Don't be fooled by the (semi)decent reviews on Google and Yelp. As we approached the bustling restaurant, we had high hopes for a cheap and local meal, as reviews had promised. We were greeted by an enthusiastic waiter, who after a couple minutes, brought us away from the restaurant and across the street to a smaller place with the same name and menu. This place was exclusively tourists, and the waiter spoke perfect English. These signs should have been enough that we were being scammed. Being hungry and too trustworthy, we ordered our food and hoped for the best. The food came out quickly, but what came out could not be described as Italian. My Asian mom could make better Italian food from canned pasta sauce. The pizza was salty and seemed straight out of a college dining hall. The pasta portion was small, undercooked, and lacked the fresh taste I had been used to in Italy. The worst dish - escalope - bordered on being too touch to chew and was covered in an overly salty marinara sauce. When our drink order was taken the waitress only took my friends order so I had to shout out as she was walking away that I'd like some wine (not awkward at all...) The glasses sitting on our table were dirty and my half liter of wine literally looked like it was put in the sink cleaned with a dirty sponge and then filled with wine, it was horrific to get something that dirty. I told one of the waitresses and she apologized profusely and got us all new glasses. Apparently from other reviews on here it's a common thing for them to not probably clean things. I wish I read the reviews first, lesson learned. Our bruschetta came with our meals because they forgot to make them and the pizza was good but not up to par with other pizza I had gotten that week. If I hadn't had such amazing pizza the past couple days I would rank this pizza up there as really good but it felt like something I could just get at home in California. This place got packed though and we came within about 15min of it opening and then 20min later they sat people at our table because they ran out of room (if you value personal space this isn't the place to go.) I also noticed that unlike other restaurants where they'd give you a jar of parmesan, here they just had one big open container that they'd bring around (which was quite off putting thinking about how many bugs probably flew in it because it wasn't covered.) This place has the best value in our 4 day-stay in Rome. The mushroom pasta was excellent and the rest of our order were good as well. We had both the 1st course (pasta) and 2nd course, with drinks - and the final check came out about 30% less what one would have paid in other places with 2€€ signs in Yelp. The servers were friendly and interesting and no complaints at all. I think that they have additional restaurants near by as they have some of the people waiting in-line go there. Don't get intimidated if you see a line. The waiters will seat you based on your party #. We ordered the salami pizza (thin crust), ox tail (based off yelp reviews) and a spicy red sauce penne pasta. All of it was delicious. But similar to other Yelpers' experience, the service was kinda intimidating! I know Italian servers are all about efficiency, but one of the servers had some real attitude here. Maybe he was stressed-out from all these Americans asking for olive oil, salt and pepper, red pepper flakes, etc. etc. But! Don't let it deter you from eating here. They also have cheap "1st dishes" under 10 euros. The place is very popular among locals and other Italians. As it's an extra 2 blocks away, most tourists probably don't quite make it to this place. No wait + quick, nice service. I ordered a pizza, small pasta dish and tiramisu. VERY satisfied... borderline 5 stars 2nd trip: late lunch on a Monday (prob around 2pm). The place was absolutely packed. It took almost 20 minutes to get a table, and then I swear I waited for about an hour to get lasagna, which was pretty good but not worth the wait. Meanwhile, the servers who speak perfectly good English simply ignored me. Perhaps lasagna just takes forever to bake whereas the rest of the dishes don't. I was just annoyed w/the wait. I read good reviews of this place and that's why me and my husband went to this restaurant. We were highly disappointed. Every Italian restaurant has vegetarian options in Pasta - we asked our server and he kept on repeating rather rudely that they don't have anything vegetarian on the menu. We ordered Penne Arrabiatta. And for second pasta dish I asked him if they can add veggies to Pasta and Tomato sauce. And he said NO. I WAS SURPRISED! We ended up ordering two Arrabiatta. I was advised to stop into this place for lunch before my four-hour tour of the Colosseum and the surrounding area. It was a fantastic recommendation. I ordered the Capricciosa pizza and some white wine and sat outside under the covered patio, and people-watched as I enjoyed my pizza and wine, both of which were delicious. As a bonus, the prices are very reasonable, especially given the proximity to one of Rome's most touristy areas. This was our first meal in Rome; after having been here for 2.5 days, feel like this place is right in the middle (hence, the 2 stars; truly I would give it 2.5 if I could). So far I've been entirely disappointed by Italian pizza. I'm sorry but maybe I've been spoiled by having delicious pizza options in both NY and Boston. This pizza is the best we've had, which sadly doesn't say much. Some people complained about the "burnt" crust but we thought that was the best part! We sat outside where the tables are packed in so tightly you literally touch the group next to you (ew, it was close to 85 degrees F when we were there). Service was pleasant but could've been better. Overall, meh. We stayed at an Air BnB down the street and the owners recommended this place higher than any other in the area. The first night we noticed a long line leading from the front door out into the street (always a good sign). We noticed the outdoor patio was full and the interior was almost completely empty so I went inside to ask if the line was just for the outdoor seating. A waiter grabbed me and said, "For two? No problem, come with me!!" Then led me out into the road, pointed into the middle of the street and shouted, "There's the end of the line!" Under normal conditions I would have assaulted the waiter and likely never returned. However, after such a glowing review from our hosts my wife was far more patient with this guy and establishment. Too hungry to wait in the hour plus long line, we decided to show up early the next day. 5:30 the next day we showed up (had an extremely early flight home, hence the early dinner). We were sat outside where we waited for 20 minutes without any service. Once we both decided on a seafood dish we tried to order them with the waiter who just replied, "No." When we asked why not he stated they don't receive any fish until 7 PM. We then asked if we could have one minute to choose another entree and the waiter reluctantly agreed. A friendly danish couple had just been sat bedside us and was also surprised by the news. 45 Minutes later, and after the Danish couple asked for service, we each ordered pasta dishes. After another hour I was brought a dish, and one of the Danes was brought a dish. After another 30 minutes (and asking what else we ordered) they realized their fault and brought out the other two meals. My pasta tasted like canned ragu or prego, as did my wife's. The Danish folks came to the same conclusion. It took another half hour for our check. As soon as it arrived one of the waiters stood over my wife and asked, "Are you leaving yet?" I'm giving this place two stars because their house red wine was good and it got us fairly buzzed. Also it's cheap, but their service was terrible, and the food matched it. For the price this first course is a great value. The veal (11€) was the most expensive main course and had almost no flavor, was very fatty and is worth skipping. The mozzarella and spicy salami pizza (7€) was delivered quickly and was only slightly greasy. The taste was average. When I ordered the waitress spoke English and the menu was in six languages. She was very polite but forgot to deliver my main course and never delivered my side course. After asking, I finally received my veal but never the potatoes. As I looked around after hearing the table next to us complain about asking for their check twice, many people looked irritated waiting. While they were nice the service still was lacking. read more

This rating was a tough call. I had read about the nightmares tourists faces while eating here and witnessed it happen first-hand during dinner. However, it seems as if most of these instances were because the tourists were either not aware of the customs in Italy or just plain rude. My group and I practiced some Italian sayings, and made a reservation earlier in the day to sit outside. The staff is gruff, but really nice if you're nice to them! (Also, would not recommend eating here before 7:00 PM because many options are not available and it says in the menu any pizza served before 7 is pre-made frozen). Another tip would be to immediately serve yourself any olive oil, balsamic, salt, or Parmesan that gets set at your table. These are actually community condiments and will most likely be taken away from you 5 or so minutes later! Our food came at seperate times, and I got served lamb after ordering veal, but it was really tasty! And the outside dining area was a unique dining experience, hence the 4 star rating. Walked by in Rome almost everyday while I was here as it was in the direction as to where I was staying. Always a long line so I went to try it one day to see why this was the case. I was disappointed when I got there as the food was not superb to have this many people. I ordered a pasta bacon with tomato sauce and the person I went with ordered lasagna with meat sauce. The pasta was hard and chewy whereas the lasagna was soft but taste burnt on the top. We also ordered prosciutto with melon. I've had better prosciutto than this place but the melon was super sweet.
