This review is long overdue. I travel to Cambodia often, and every now and then I really crave my noodle soups and especially Phnom Penh noodles, love the ground pork a lot and I forgot to tell them to remove cilantro. Their fried egg rolls are perfectly crispy, and the dipping sauce is delicious I believe it is the typical Thai sauce. The customer service is great, and the restaurant is always clean and well organized. It's definitely time for another visit so I can enjoy some simple, comforting Khmer food again and hopefully they added some specials and new items. read more

Hole-in-the-wall Cambodian/Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant. No frills. Just simple and comforting noodle dishes. You know this place is legit when you only see older folks dining here lol. Like they could be my aunts, uncles, grandpas. I came here for one thing and one thing only. Phnom Penh (regular size $14), choice of noodles (flat /thin egg noodles, or flat / thin rice noodles). I opted with some flat rice noodles & dry style (has beef broth on the side). It was so warm and delicious!! Portions are so generous. Hard workers and the owner is so sweet. When I was eating, I observe him making conversation with every one of his customers and almost know them by name or usual orders. Impressive! Glad this business has a loyal customers. Came back to Ly Heng today after what feels like forever. I'd been here a very long time ago and honestly couldn't remember what it was like, so I figured it was time to give it another shot. I went with the Phnom Penh noodles (dry) since they seem to be the local favorite. They were pretty decent! Noodles were cooked perfectly, and the bone broth on the side was comforting. But it didn't exactly blow my mind. Maybe I set my expectations too high, or maybe this dish just isn't my go-to noodle dish. Side note: I've tried calling this place on multiple occasions and... they never answer the phone. Don't count on calling in an order. Just show up. One of my friend posted the sate beef noodles here and it looked good so I wanted to give it a try. The place itself is pretty clean and in the corner of the street. Parking is not great since it's mostly street parking. The sate beef noodles comes with a side of bone broth. The soup is great. The sate beef noodles was hella spicy at least for me. So if you can't handle that level of a spicy I would say beware However, def try it for yourself plus once in a while having your butt burn is okay. After what seems like a 5 year hiatus, i finally had the chance to return back to Ly Heng to see if the food was still as delicious as I remembered -- here's my honest updated review as a San Diego foodie who made a vlog about this restaurant that went viral lol I stopped by on a random weekday morning around 1030am with a friend and there were only about two other tables occupied . The sweet older woman greeted me right away as I walked in and offer us some waters . Because i used to come here almost every Sunday back in the day, i knew the menu pretty well and placed the order . Our food came out fairly quickly as the restaurant was pretty empty--- here's what we ate: SALT & PEPPER CALAMARI: Just as tasty as I remembered . I love the batter with the extra crunchy fried garlic and green onions . The dipping sauce is pretty basic as always-- reminds me of just a spicy mayo . Overall, still one of my favorite appetizers . 8/10 PHNOM PENH NOODLES: This was THEE dish we use to come for because the bone broth that comes on the side used to be sooo flavorful and would cure any hangover lol -- this time it was pretty mid . We ordered this dish "dry" with thin egg nooodles . The egg noodles itself was dressed nicely savory with plenty of garlic and herbs. It comes with a variety that of proteins -- minced pork, unbattered calamari, imitation crab, meatballs, and shrimp . The beef that they use is on the cheaper side, so its a bit rough and not so tender . I think if i were to ever order this dish again the future, i would substitute out the beef with chicken or even shrimp . This is supposed to be a play on the Thai dish "chicken satay", but over noodles . Overall, the presentation is really pretty, but flavor could be much better-- this dish had major potential . 6.5/10 Honorable mentions-- their mee-ka-thang (gravy chow fun) is really flavorful and always hits the spot . This is served with thick rice noodles, vegetables, your choice of protein, topped with their homemade savory gravy, and fried eggs on top . I love eating this with sriracha . This is my favorite spot for hủ tiếu! They serve excellent Phnom Penh-style rice noodles, and both the soup and dry versions are delicious. The flavors are very similar to what I've had in Vietnam. My husband's favorite is the stir-fried flat rice noodles--they have that perfect wok hei aroma. Portions are very generous too. I have no words to describe how good this place is, this might've changed the trajectory of my San Diego living. It's located on a corner and street parking may be a little tough but it's located by a neighborhood. This establishment is a combination of Cambodian/Vietnamese cuisine with its menu being carefully selected to serve their best dishes. I actually love that their menu is smaller as someone who has choice paralysis when she sees soo many options. We ordered 3 dishes: the salt and pepper calamari (MUST GET), stir fried flat wide noodles with beef, and Phnom Penh noodle soup. The calamari is probably the best calamari I've had so far, it honestly is a stand alone dish even without the dipping sauce that comes with it. It's the perfect ratio of batter crust to squid. I reallllllly enjoyed this appetizer. The Phnom Penh noodles is Hu Trieu's direct cousin; broth is so light and fragrant. I can imagine eating this the day after a night out. The stir fried flat noodles were also pretty good, it reminds me of pho ap chao but the noodles were not fried. All in all, I'm definitely making my boyfriend come back with me. The service can be a little slow but the food is so good that I don't mind and I'm more than happy to support a mom and pop shop. read more

I didn't know i haven't reviewed this place yet and I've been coming here for over a decade. The restaurant is very tiny. Its a mom and pops type of restaurant. The flavor here is very good. Its loaded with flavor! They have my favorite egg noodle stir fry in gravy and the best calamari with fried garlic. Their chow fun in gravy is also exceptional. The years long construction on the street in front of the doors has been so annoying but def hasnt stopped anyone from coming in. They have a tiny lot behind the restaurant itself you can park at. The flow of customers are good, they're small but always get full. Not overly packed though. It's always my go to for dry noodles with my mom. She always orders the large& take home what she can't finish, which is usually half the big ol bowl! They are generous with the proteins/toppings. The stir fry noodles were presented in a layered pile of yumminess! The gravy for the stir fry was so savory &light. It wasn't overpowering. The eggrolls had a decent amount of Stuffing and was made with either pork or chicken i think. It was extra extra crispy& hot. Took a while to cook down. Or maybe I was just impatient the only thing I didn't get pictured was the Thai tea without boba& that was probably my only quip. It was a little too sweet for me& not enough of the tea flavor. We ordered the salt and pepper tofu, regular sized phnom penh noodles with and regular sized beef saté with wide egg noodles that came with a side of bone soup. The portions are very generous for the price! Everything also came out very fast and piping hot. The fried tofu was very crispy and was topped with fried garlic, green onion and jalapenos. The phnom penh noodles were very flavorful and had a lot of pieces of meat and seafood. The beef saté noodles were also a very generous portion and very flavorful! It was also a pretty good level of spice! The bone broth that came with the saté noodles had a deep flavor and a lot of meat that fell off the bone. We got fried calamari and fried tofu and they were good. Between the two, I liked the friend tofu the most as it was soft on the inside and crispy outside. The calamari was okay. We all ordered noodle soups, with two of them being dry noodles. I ordered the dry noodle and it pretty much very similar to a pho ga except the soup comes as a side. Really bad service because owners do not trust anyone to do anything. They have a buser and 1 cook/owner who does it all. Due to the lack of trust, the busser sits idle while the owner handles everything essential, collecting cash, cooking, waiting tables. The wait was 20+ minutes before we can even order! We had 2 hungry kids in tow with us and while we would've just left, we felt compelled to stay to support our cambodian restaurant. Many others also complained and even shouted at the owners to hire workers! Trust is an essential to success of any establishment! Now onto the food. Do yourself a favor and go down the block to Trieu Chao for better cambodian food/service/value. Saw this place as a recommendation on Instagram and it was the best recommendation I have ever had. The food was absolutely amazing I ordered the beef sate plate to go, the wait was about 20 minutes and it was more than worth it. This was my first time having Cambodian food, after the first bite I had to set the noodles down and just think about how amazing it tasted. The noodles were creamy and spicy with the perfect amount of crunch from the peanuts. Personally it was too spicy for me and I had to take breaks from eating but it was just so delicious and amazing. We visited Ly Heng as a family of five with a 15-month-old. I ordered the wonton noodle soup, my husband had the Bo Luc Lac, my mom and brother got the Phnom Penh special (not pictured), and my sister-in-law ordered the beef sate (also not pictured). Unfortunately, the food quality has declined since my last visit a couple of years ago during the pandemic. While the food now seems fresh, it is of lower quality. The Phnom Penh noodles no longer include intestines, the noodles were overcooked and soggy, and the soup was overly salty. The beef in the Bo Luc Lac was tough and not tender, making it hard to chew through, and we ended up throwing away several pieces. The wonton wasn't great either, as the meat was very tough. Additionally, the service wasn't very friendly. Parking is also super difficult with the current street construction. Regrettably, we won't be returning. read more

This place reminds me of home! The broth is so soothing and comforting. I usually get the dry version of the noodles and sip on the broth on the side. They have sauces on the table to add to the dish if needed including hoisin sauce, jalapeños and chili. The portions are huge and they dont skimp on the meat toppings. The salt and pepper tofu is hot, crunchy and steamy right out of the kitchen. When dipped in the sauce, its the perfect combo. All these years I've grown up in City Heights since I was a teen and now in my 30s, I've always wanted to try this place. I'm kind of mind blown and never knew until I went my 1st time yesterday that they close for lunch/prep between the hours of 3-5pm lol! All the other times I've tried to dine here they were always closed and I always thought they were closed for the day and never bothered to look at their hours on the door or on Yelp especially being more active on Yelp now. Wow now I know. I came with my mom yesterday at 2:45pm not knowing they were closing soon. The waitress turned down a lot of people at 2:50pm. So they have a super tiny 3-4 car parking lot at the rear. There is also street parking or the plaza across the street. I wish my 1st time here I was actually hungry and got to try their foods since I've heard many amazing things about how delicious this place is throughout the years.
