I was SO EXCITED to visit this location with all the reviews and hype on Yelp! Sad to report, I was SO disappointed with the quality of food! I'm summing the hype of the reviews to be mainly due to the ambiance of the restaurant and not so much about the food. Or maybe, this location is the best Chinese food in the area...I'm just not sure. I have to admit the ambiance is nice and photo worthy but, I need the food to hit just as hard if the ratings are going to be upwards of 4 stars and it just didn't for me! WARNING: This is a very small restaurant! Reservations are HIGHLY recommended! They do offer indoor and sidewalk dining but, it is very limited in space. We ordered: Szechuan green beans - green bean were ok Honey walnut shrimp - this was the best thing on the table as it was not too overly dressed with sauce and shrimp was nice and crispy FS fried rice - different taste with the garlic butter but, in a good way Shrimp and pork dumplings - I didn't care for the sauce and dumplings themselves lacked in flavor Crab rangoon - NOT A FAN of the flavor! I think they use real crab meat and it was just more on the fishy smelling and tasting side. Char siu ribs - enough to feed 4 people but, they appeared well dressed in sauce but, still lacked in flavor Golden fried custard - NOT A FAN! Custard was weird, needed more of the lychee sauce for it to have ANY taste at all. If you are looking for authentic tasting Chinese food, in my opinion...this location is NOT IT. Everyone's palette is different though...SO DO YOU!
One of the best spots. I am a sucker for any consortium holdings place but this is one of my favorites. Have been here so many times...but you know the rules...one quick review: Food: amazing. So good and huge portions and not too pricy Ambiance: it's a consortium holdings spot...so this part is amazing...for sure Service: great and on point for orders, can take a bit of time if busy but good.
Fun decor with indoor and outdoor dining. Parking is limited street parking. Reservations are recommended. Service was spotty. We had to ask for condiments multiple times before receiving them. The food: The egg rolls were not crispy, the cucumber salad was good. The beef lo mien was really good. The kung pao was ok. There was no heat to it and the chicken was dry. The szechuan green beans were very good. The menu pricing is very reasonable. We will go back.
Very underwhelming compared to all of the hype on social media. The place is very small on the inside and the aesthetic was unique but not as impressive as I was expecting. Food was quite bland and one noted. I've always wanted to try this place and glad I did, but wouldn't go back or recommend.

We got there around 7 and it wasn't busy. I found street parking easily a couple blocks away. The restaurant is pretty small, I'd recommend at most a party of 4 here. Well decorated as all of their establishments are. You order family style. We ordered the cucumber salad, noodles, and honey walnut shrimp. Service was alright. The food was really really salty. But aside from that, good portions! Definitely enough for 3 people and then some. Bill came out to $55 which is a bit more than other Chinese food places you can visit in SD for lower quality. I'd visit again but nothing to write home about.
I had my doubts. CH is known for being all vibes, no taste, but Fortunate Son may actually be one of their restaurants that is getting it right! The food here is really good! My husband and I couldn't narrow down our favorites so we ordered more than we needed! We got the crab rangoons, fried rice, orange chicken, honey walnut shrimp and green beans. Everything was delicious! You can never go wrong starting with crab rangoons. The fried rice was really tasty and well seasoned. The orange chicken had that real orange glaze (not overly sweet). Our stand outs were the honey walnut shrimp and the green beans. Both were crisp and cooked so fresh! We had plenty to go after because they did provide some nice sized portions! The restaurant itself is very vibey and over the top, as to be expected, but way smaller than I expected. Definitely make a reservation. They have a limited drink menu with a few non alcoholic options and 3 beers. Glad I finally got to try this place and that I was so pleasantly surprised by the food!
I'm so thankful that our hotel concierge recommended Fortunate Son to me on a recent work trip because it was one of my favorite restaurants we tried. The food is incredible and the restaurant decor is just as good! I was stunned by the pink and green exterior, I loved everything about it. My mom and I split the cucumber salad, dumplings, and the scallion stir-fried beef. Everything was delicious but we were most blown away by the scallion stir-fried beef because the beef was so tender and it was surprisingly delicious for how simple it is. I'd recommend a reservation because it's a small space. I think you can also go next door to Polite Provision and get Fortunate Son takeout which is such a hack.
Decor is adorable. Service was good. Menu was small. Restaurant was hot as hell! Food was okay. The prices are right but not sure I'd be back. It was way too hot in there today.
The places is very cute and aesthetic but the place is so hot, no air conditioning and parking is horrible because it's street parking and there's none. The prices of the food is pretty good but it also is just okay. The food was not really impressive but it also wasn't bad. Would recommend at least providing more chicken rather than just crispy/crunchy fried parts with no chicken at all. The staff is all super friendly which made the experience better.
Amazing place to eat!! I went here with my partner for a date & the portions are really great for two. Very filling, we had the chow mein, dumplings and bokchoy! Definitely recommend food is tasty one of the best.
This place has a pretty nice interior and good friendly service! I was originally told a 1.5-2 hour wait since I came without a reservation, but ended up only waiting 5 minutes! I ordered the lo mein noodles and general tso's chicken. The lo mein noodles were pretty good, not amazing but overall I'd say I liked it but I would order something differently next time! The general tso's chicken was better, I enjoyed it a lot but my only minor critique is I just think it had a bit too much crunch and not enough chicken! Overall, I enjoyed this place and would come back! One last thing I'd say the price was really good especially for today's prices! Great service, good food!
Unfortunately, we couldn't get a seat as the wait was 2 hours. We were able to order take out and hit the brewery down the street. My general tso chicken could have used a bit more sauce and was honestly a little dry. The friend rice was good and the orange chicken. I can't really speak on the ambiance of restaurant but the service we received when ordering was great. I'm willing to try again.
This place is stunning! It's a small room with not many tables so you definitely need a reservation but I like the intimate feel. The food is all really good! The portions are big so you can get leftovers, for sure. The waiter was incredibly nice. He knew it was our first time there so he gave us his recommendations and let us enjoy the ambiance and take our time.
Replacing Soda & Swine, Fortunate Son opened in late 2020 and is definitely one of the best Chinese options in North Park and surrounding. They did a great job with the decor on the inside, it feels as if you're eating under a garden and you can tell they pay a lot of attention to detail with the design. Parking in this area can be a bit tricky, North Park does not really have many parking lots available, so your best bet will be free street parking. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating, but the best tables are indoor. The other tables are on the street in the front so it can get a bit noisy, and there are flies. Our server was very polite and everything is family style so everything comes out as it is ready. That is nice sometimes but one issue we had was that we were a group of four and one person's two items did not come until well after everyone else had theirs so timing can be a bit tricky here. Aside from that the menu is not very large, but it does have a lot of great options on it. I chose the Beef & Broccoli and really enjoyed it. I tried many other dishes here from other people at the table and we all enjoyed ours as well. The portion sizes are a bit large so I think two per person is plenty. I would recommend if you are searching for a great casual Chinese option in North Park. read more

Went here with my son and husband and my son's friends. I didn't make any reservations 'coz it was a weekday and I was thinking that it probably wouldn't be that busy, but omg I was wrong we waited like 1 hour for the table 'coz the inside was already packed when we came. But the wait was worth it. We enjoyed our dinner here. For the 4 of us I ordered a lot 'coz when I was reading the Menu they all look so good :;) Here is what I ordered for the 4 of us: *EGGROLLS *CUCUMBER SALAD *DUMPLINGS *CRISPY TOFU *MAMI NOODLES *FRIED RICE *GENERAL TSO'S CHICKEN *BEEF & BROCCOLI *SALT & PEPPER SHRIMP *HONEY WALNUT SHRIMP *CHAR SIU RIBS *DAN DAN NOODLES *GOLDEN FRIED CUSTARD *2 MOCHI The plates and serving size look small, but it's actually a good portion in person and very filling. There's so much food for me to discuss all of them, so I'm just gonna tell you guys which one I liked the most. The one that I will get for sure on my next visit is the CRISPY TOFU, SALT & PEPPER SHRIMP, DUMPLINGS, MAMI NOODLES, HONEY WALNUT SHRIMP , DAN DAN NOODLES and TSO 'S GENERAL CHICKEN. These are very Tasty and delicious. The one I'm probably not gonna get next time are the Cucumber salad, Eggroll, and the Char siu ribs. The cucumber salad taste meh, it didn't have that good, strong taste of condiments I was looking for. The eggroll wasn't that good. The Char siu ribs was good, but when night time came and the lights got dimmed I couldn't tell the difference between the meat, garlic, ginger, etc., 'coz the color of them all together are all the same and it's hard for me to pick which one is the meat ;) For the dessert the Golden fried custard and Mochi , not a fan of them . For drinks we just got water coz they dont serve Cocktail . But all in all I would come back here again 'coz the service is great and there's lots of food I still wanna try here. I came here with my wife to try this restaurant before a concert we were going to & man this place is pretty dang cool but it was literally warm inside though! lol anyways besides that ummm the ambience was awesome I loved the decor!. I ordered the Dan Dan Noodles which were pretty good let's just put it this way it was a spaghetti with peanut sauce & ground meat but I liked it & the portion was big no joke! We also ordered the general Tao's chicken which was a pretty good also! Just be aware that it doesn't come with rice! It's a very small place with only one restroom haha anyways I enjoyed it but wasn't completely sold on it but give it a try! read more

adorbs, loved it a lot more than I anticipated. TBH I expected it to be gimmicky but it was very yum and super cute inside! It's a smaller space but for a double date it was perfect! The beef was so yummy and the green beans had a nice sauce to them! The bathroom situation was cool asf thanks for the mints LOL. And conveniently enough the bar next door is just a step away it was so cool. Defo coming back ! read more
I always passed by this place and it looked intriguing, especially their inside decor, here was my experience. AMBIANCE Parking: Welcome to (No)rth (Park). It can get pretty busy just got to put in some extra time in the neighborhood or streets for metered parking. Seating: Inside and outside seating. For inside, reservations are recommended. Room for about 50 people. Vibes: Welcome to North Park, a lot of eateries and bars to hop around. It's a pretty hip place with constant traffic. The spot itself is Retro Chinese-American aesthetic with a modern twist. Think red lighting, plants, and a playlist that keeps the energy up. It's one of those spots that feels trendy but still approachable--good for dates or catching up with friends. FOOD / DRINKS Mayo Walnut Shrimp (Recommend) This is one of their standout dishes--and for good reason. Crispy shrimp coated in that creamy, slightly sweet sauce with candied walnuts. It hits that crunchy + rich + sweet combo really well and is easily one of the safer bets on the menu. Green Beans (Recommend) Simple but solid. Good balance to the heavier shrimp--fresh, slightly savory/umami making it a nice side to round things out. Ginger Lemonade (Recommend) A refreshing sip with a nice bite of ginger. SERVICE Friendly and efficient, especially considering how busy it gets. Food comes out fairly quick once you're seated. TL;DR OVERALL 4 stars. Steady prices, good food, and good choices. Fun spot with strong vibes and solid Chinese-American comfort food. It leans more elevated takeout-style than traditional, but that's kind of the appeal. I've been to pretty good Chinese spots but this is a nice experience if you're looking for nice aesthetics and good food. It's more like 2.5, but "fortunately" the staff is really nice! It's always interesting to see someone's take on Chinese food. The interior and exterior are really cool! It's the kind of aesthetic that the current generation loves. But underneath it all, it's just one step above Panda Express with a hefty price tag. The noodles were decent, but something was missing, Chinese five spice...not sure. The fried rice was good. I mean, if you can't make decent fried rice than something is wrong. The kung pau was good too, but the heat was not as strong. Their version of orange chicken was more like orange chicken breading, the pieces looked big but were not. I did like the egg rolls. Again, this appeals to a whole different generation that's too afraid to venture to a hole in the wall down in South Bay. Plus it's expensive for what you get. My friends and I had an early dinner to celebrate the Lunar New Year. There were only 6 of us, but we ordered 9 dishes! We ordered the following to share family style: - Fried wontons - Crispy tofu - Szechuan green beans - Bok Choy - Shrimp & pork dumplings - Dam Dan noodles - Shrimp fried rice - Beef fried rice - Orange Chicken Service was good and the food wasn't too bad, although it wasn't entirely authentic Chinese. My friends all seemed to really enjoy the food. I ate very lightly because I was going to another dinner. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with a long dragon floating in the ceiling that stretched all along the interior of the restaurant before the decorative arch at the entrance. Took our mom here for her birthday and what a great choice it was. We had a reservation so we were seated right away without any wait. From the outside you wouldn't think much of it, but the moment you walk in your jaw just drops. The interior is absolutely stunning. A Chinese dragon stretches across the ceiling, red lanterns hang everywhere, and there's a cozy fireplace that just ties the whole vibe together. The space is on the smaller side but it works perfectly. It genuinely felt like we were transported to another world. We went all out and ordered pretty much everything on the menu and zero regrets. Service was impressively quick and every single dish delivered. My personal favorites were the Dan Dan noodles and the salt and pepper shrimp. We devoured everything so fast and still had leftovers from over ordering, which we happily took home. And the best part? The price. Incredibly affordable for the quality of food and the one of a kind dining experience you get. Honestly such a gem in North Park. If you haven't been, go! read more
They finally take reservations, yay! For the longest time they didn't, and it was always so hard to get into. This was my second time going, the first was when they first opened. The decor is still very similar, and looks very beautiful with all of the red and green decorations. The beautiful lanterns and Floral pieces all over really make this a perfect spot for the Lunar New Year celebration. We came to celebrate with the small group. I believe the largest group they can see is about 6. This area can be tough for parking, so plan to arrive early enough before your reservation, as you might have to circle around a bit. This place gets packed, as it is very popular still, and I'm not sure if everyone knows they take reservations because the walk in line was huge. One of the downsides is that the restaurant is very small, and there isn't much room to fit large groups, and they don't have much space for reservations. We ordered several dishes, and enjoyed most of them. The prices are fairly reasonable as well, and the food is mean to share family style. Orange chicken - several people in our group thought this could've had more orange flavor to it, however i thought it was just the right amount of orange flavor. It was cooked very well and not chewy or over fried. Chongqing crispy tofu - im normally not a fan of tofu but i really enjoyed this dish. It was crispy on the outside as described and coated in a nice seasoning with cumin. I would order this again. Bok Choy and Green beans - my least favorite, it had no flavor and needed salt and they both tasted the same because the gravy they were coated in seemed to be identical for both dishes. Wouldn't recommend. Dan Dan noodles - one of my favorite dishes. The noodles were cooked just right, not mushy or hard. They had a lot of flavor and everyone agreed they were very good. Salt and pepper shrimp - another one of our favorites, we all agreed they were delicious. Nice and crispy with a good flavor and not overly salty at all. Would recommend. Fried Rice - we had two orders of this one with beef and one with shrimp. Both were excellent, everyone agreed, lots of flavor, great texture and another of my favorite dishes. General Tso's chicken - the flavor on this was excellent. A little kick to it, just enough, and the chicken was cooked perfectly just like the orange chicken. Crab rangoon - I love when you can find these with real crab and that's what these had. I enjoyed them, and wish there were more in the order. Overall the experience was pretty great. Decor was beautiful, food was excellent and the staff was friendly. They did rush us out as soon as we were done, but I get it they had a long line of people waiting to come in. There were six in our group, we ordered lots of food to share, and had lots of food to take home. I highly recommend coming here at least once. read more
Such a cool space with an intimate vibe and great service from start to finish. Everything is served family-style and they definitely don't skimp on portions, which makes it perfect for sharing and trying a little bit of everything. Drink options include beer and wine along with tea, lemonade, and soft drinks simple but fitting for the experience. The wonton soup is legendary: jumbo shrimp wontons, rich flavorful broth, and comforting in the best way. Do not miss the dumplings they've got a nice little kick of spice and so much flavor. Parking in this area is always a challenge, so rideshare is your best bet. Reservations are highly recommended if you want to sit indoors. Overall, absolutely worth a visit. They also do a takeout and you can get drinks at Polite Provisions next door and order from Fortunate Son but you miss the vibe. read more
Came here with a party of 7 and for what we ordered (9 items) we were all full, had some leftovers, and all for $157 after tax and tip!! We've been to a few CH group restaurants/bars and this one's a bit different (way more casual and affordable). It's also pretty small so resy's are def recommended. The Szechuan hot chicken wings and cucumbers and fried tofu were the highlights of the items ordered! Would pass on the cabbage and sausage dish, was recommended by our server but it's a bit simple. Also Also this isn't the most traditional Chinese food so def don't go in expecting that but it still tastes good! read more

Good news is the food here is great. The service could be a bit better so my advice is to go next door to Polite Provisions and order there. The bar staff there is awesome and it has more tables. Okay, so food! The tofu dish was da bomb here. Perfectly crispy and great flavor. And the portion was really large. They give at least 12 pieces. read more

I definitely need to come back here, but from what I remember this spot was pretty good! There was a bit of a wait when I went, but nothing too crazy. Parking around here can definitely be a pain so keep that in mind. One thing that really stuck out to me was the fried rice I'd 100% order that again. The vibe alone is super dope. They really nailed the decor down to the T. The whole place has a dark, moody ambiance and a really cool aesthetic that makes it feel unique. I actually came here for a birthday celebration and the service was overall really nice which made the experience even better. The only sad part is they had this dessert that they no longer have and it was SO good. I still think about it sometimes and wish they'd bring it back. Overall a really chill spot with good food and a great atmosphere. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

Super cute, dark, great for date night till u realize that u can't find parking so now you're late to your reservation. Which BTW don't come here if u don't have a reservation. Fortunate son has been on my list to try for a few years and my husband surprised me yesterday with a little birthday outing for linner and man, did it mean expectations! Ambiance - nailed it, so freaking cute! I definitely want to go back at night to show moody it can be! Service- very friendly, helpful and attentive! Food - really love that everything was family style and the flavors were on point! The orange chicken was refreshing almost! Like you could taste hand squeezed orange almost, idk how else to describe it! The lo mein was delicious, the general tso cauliflower was delicious... All of the food was excellent--except for the hot and sour soup, which lacked both heat and tang. Slightly better but doubly expensive Panda Express, just with an amazing ambiance. Food: 3/5 The star of the show was the Honey Walnut Shrimp. The shrimp were huge, and the caramelized walnuts were broken up and sprinkled all over so you could taste it in every bite. The portions were alright--three dishes were enough for two people. The Orange Chicken felt like there was more dough than chicken. I wouldn't say the food blew my mind; it's just a step up from Panda Express, honestly. Service: 3.5/5 Our server was nice! Tried to dine in a couple different times before getting a reservation with a reasonable wait time. The interior of the restaurant is so beautiful but there's not much seating, so the long wait time is understandable but not worth it in my opinion. We ordered the Shanghai bok choy, General Tso's chicken, and Dan dan noodles. The three dishes were a good amount of food for three people dining, and we still had leftovers to bring home. All three dishes were a bit on the greasy side. The General Tso's chicken was also heavily breaded, so it was crunchy but there wasn't much meat. The Dan dan noodles were pretty good and not too spicy. If you like spice, you could probably ask for chili oil/sauce! I really enjoyed the atmosphere and service at Fortunate Son, but probably would not come back if I was in the mood for Chinese (American) food. read more
I came with a friend late on a rainy night. I had heard about this place here and there since it's also run by the same group managing Morning Glory. Parking was easy since it wasn't very busy (due to weather and time of day). The inside was cute and pretty aesthetically pleasing (feels almost like cultural appropriation...). Food was average for the most part. It took a while to come out and I noticed that neighboring tables, who arrived after us, received their food first which was strange. I wasn't impressed by the fried rice or green beans. The tofu was the best one out of the 3 dishes we ordered. One redeeming factor is that the food was pretty cheap for the portion size. As for service, the waitress was nice but there was no service after we ordered. No one to refill water or check in. I felt like we were neglected. No it's not POC owned, It's own by Consortium. Fortunate Son's chef Tony Guan I believe is a POC.
We tried to go tonight around 6:30 pm and were told there was a 3 hour wait for a table...? How is this possible and how do we manage this if there are no reservations? Many customers in line has the same question.
There's no trick to trying to get in on the weekends, outside of NOT trying on the weekends unless you're prepared to grab yourself a nice table at Polite Provisions and wait it out. Tuesday/Wednesday are less busy if you get there anytime before…
