I waited an hour on a random Tuesday night. I LOVE the duck here, so please expand into a bigger space. The duck was juicy and full of flavor. The chow fun was surprisingly good as well! The only thing I wouldn't order again is the braised pork belly because it was extremely salty. Seating is casual. Service is typical of a Chinese restaurant. Parking is free but the spaces are tight, especially since it was busy.
Another wonderful eating experience. Clean restaurant, friendly server, great food almost perfect except for the noisy table of customers sitting across from us. The food was awesome flavorful, plentiful enough to share and to take home for later. 2026(12)
I wanted to like this place but I was super disappointed with the majority of the dishes. The only thing I enjoyed was the cantonese roast duck but even that was lacking. Everything else was just mid. The string beans were super salty and some pieces were not fully cooked. The pork belly was also salty and dry and was not pleasant to eat. I couldn't even chase the saltiness down with the rice because the rice was also salty too lol. The honey walnut shrimp was okay. I appreciated the crunch and size of the shrimp but the sauce wasn't up to my expectations. I would have liked to try the other dishes but I honestly don't see myself coming back. I do appreciate the service though. There was plenty of seating.
This is a decent Cantonese restaurant with a variety of food options. We ordered the snow pea leaves, which was pretty standard and yummy. Also got the black pepper fish which was a little too salty but fish itself was very tender with good texture. The non-spicy eggplant with pork came in huge pieces, I liked the crispiness on the outside. Food came out fairly fast and service was good. Parking can be challenging in this plaza fyi so arrive early!
With the sudden change in weather, all I wanted this evening was a warm bowl of soup and a couple pieces of succulent Chinese BBQ. After some search on Yelp, we decided to try Eastern Dinasty on Convoy Street. Upon arrival, we knew the restaurant was legit when we saw shiny and beautifully roasted ducks dangling in a display box. Inside, it had a casual décor, with seating for 60 guests. The courteous waitress guided us to our table and brought the menu and water right away. For this visit, we ordered the following dishes: West Lake Minced Beef Soup: The portion was large enough for 6 people. The lightly starched broth was nicely seasoned with hint of white pepper. In the soup, there were bits of minced beef, chopped green onion, and stirred egg whites. The simplistic soup was warm, velvety, and pleasantly flavored. 3 Item BBQ Combo (House Special Chicken, Roasted Duck, and Pork Belly): The house special chicken was nicely steamed, lightly seasoned, and with beautiful gelatinous skin. The roasted duck pieces were plump, with crispy skin and succulent meat. The pork belly had crispy thick skin, and tender meat with nice rendered fat without being overly greasy. Walnut Shrimp: The portion was quite generous for the price. The lightly battered shrimps had a nice firm texture and were covered with mayonnaise and sprinkled with sweetened and crispy walnuts. What a beautiful blend of taste and aroma. Left the restaurant heart-warmed and extremely satisfied. Highly recommended.

I also found out they received recognition as Best Restaurant from SD Magazine in 2023. AMBIANCE For my last two visits I was in a casual cushioned booth that could use repair and I also got to sit at a big round table that felt quite formal. This place has great food. Came here on a busy Saturday and found out that the menu does vary from week to weekend. We were interested in one of the rice pot dish but found out they're not available for order on Saturday's We ordered a pork belly and lobster dish to share. The lobster was very flavorful. Parking here can be tricky since it is in a busy lot. I recommend street parking and walking over after striking out with parking.
Overall: Consistently my family's go-to spot for Chinese food, fast food and delicious but often crowded ---- My favorites are: - Roast duck ($35 whole / $20 half) - Honey Walnut Shrimp $21.95 - Steamed Chilean Sea Bass $32.95 - String Bean with Black Bean Sauce $16.95 - House Special Pepper Steak $22.95 - West Lake Mince Beef Soup $17.95 ---- Notes: - parking is very tough, and the spots are small, it's a shared plaza with a lot of other popular restaurants - can be loud inside, it's kinda small so you can hear everyone else's conversations + the music that they play in the background - 1 bathroom - usually crowded at night, they have a waitlist to write your name down on to be called ---- Overall: If you're craving authentic Chinese food, come to Eastern Dynasty. It may be crowded but it will build your appetite!
Great food! My family came here for dinner tonight and we got the wonton soup, honey walnut shrimp, pan fried noodles w/beef and the kung pao chicken. All were great, my favorite of the night surprisingly was the kung pao chicken. It had a thick sticky sauce with great flavor and tiny bit of heat, if at all. It was addicting with some white rice. Honey walnut shrimp was crunchy and creamy and the shrimp was cooked great. Pan fried noodles always a good staple. And the wonton soup was decent! I probably wouldn't get it again, but my mom loved it! Only downside is this place gets busy. We got there before they opened at 5:00pm and there was already a line, so be prepared to wait. I'm not sure if you can make reservations. Service was friendly but kinda hard to flag down when you need something. Overall yummy and has a casual family friendly atmosphere. Will be back!
Good spot for Cantonese on Convoy. Menu was pretty diverse with a good mix of staple Cantonese dishes and other traditional Chinese dishes as well. Food was flavorful and good portion sizes. Service was quick. Food came out piping hot from the kitchen. Pan fried noodle was a stand out--noodles cooked to perfection with flavorful and authentic sauce. Pork belly with preserved veggie dish was also delicious. Appreciated the "leaner" pork belly. While we got traditional hot tea for the table, we were disappointed that the tea was lacking in flavor with a single tea bag for the kettle. Would make the dining experience all the better with a stronger tea as with traditional Asian meals. Overall, we enjoyed the meal and found the flavors to be authentic and true to Cantonese cuisine.
The Peking Duck two course dish is absolutely fantastic!!! The duck skin is so crispy and flavorful, the duck meat tender and rich. They serve a full duck two ways: first with warm bao buns, cucumber, thin green scallions and hoisin sauce. Second as lettuce wraps. Wow, such a special treat to have such delicious duck. About $58 and it feeds two very hungry people, or three medium hungry people. I can't recommend this duck enough. Service is good, the location takes reservations for groups 6+, and there is parking but the lot fills up quickly on weekends. We'll be back and hoping to try some of their other dishes!
Eastern Dynasty has my type of comfort food. There can be a bit of a wait in addition to their place being small. Other than that, I usually leave this place with a happy and full belly. I usually get the combination platter where you can choose anywhere between two to five of their barbecued dishes. I usually choose the roast duck and the honey bbq pork. The last time I ordered the duck, it came out nice and plump. The honey bbq pork was tasty; not too salty and not too bland. Recently, they had a deal where you buy a whole lobster and get one free so I took advantage of that. It was made Cantonese style with ginger and scallions. This is another flavorful dish where the lobster came right off the shell, and it was served on top of noodles. All the staffs were nice. One waiter in particular was friendly, approachable, and informative. Overall, it would be great if they could upgrade their restaurant to a bigger location. I'd probably be there even more often! (:
Great place to dine but it's definitely not a place for the faint of hearts. Expect it to be extremely loud due to customers chatting away like no one is there but them. It is constantly busy so prepare for a wait. The food is amazing and the service is quick. Parking is tough in this plaza.

As a big fan of Chinese food, I wasn't expecting too much from this restaurant, but I was completely wrong... You can tell by the huge crowd outside that this was a good restaurant. Despite the crowd, the staff were absolutely amazing. They handled our order patiently and although there were so many people, it only took around 20 minutes for the dishes to arrive. It was very noisy in here, but that was my only complaint. House special chicken, duck, house special soy duck: (9/10) so gooooooood! The skin+meat were really good and it was so saucy and flavorful. Each meat had their own unique taste. Green beans: (11/10) absolute perfection. The green beans had the perfect crunch and were sautéed very well. PLEASE GET THIS!!!!!! House special beef: (10/10) This has got to be the best beef dish I've ever had. So tender and juicy. It's also very succulent and the sugar snap peas were a great addition! Almost melted in my mouth! Clam: (8/10) my mom's favorite dish there! Not too salty or pungent, savory, basily taste, light, and delicious! Fried tofu: (9/10) I really liked the tofu. The batter was really good and the sauce made the dish even better! Snow pea leaves sautéed in garlic: (10/10) VERY GOOD! Great vegetable choice! Fresh and saucy. Shrimp and scrambled eggs: (8/10) eggs were light and fluffy. I thought the shrimp was pretty decent but the eggs made it even better! Out of the numerous Chinese restaurants in Convoy, I decided to go to Eastern Dynasty because who doesn't want to go a restaurant called Eastern Dynasty in gold font. The prices are very reasonable and the servers always move at a rapid pace. Orange Chicken: The orange chicken tasted only like sweet oranges. It tasted as though I had just bit into a fresh orange topped with sugar. The chicken was very crispy and there was a good chicken-to-batter ratio. Eggplant with Ground Pork: The fried eggplant was doused in an umami ground pork sauce which tasted amazing. The eggplant and ground pork complimented each other very well and the batter was very crispy. House Soy Sauce Chicken: The chicken was extremely moist and had a very flavorful and savory marinade. The chicken is seasoned to perfection and is not overpoweringly salty or too bland. Cantonese Roasted Duck: The duck was by far my favorite dish. It was succulent with a crispy skin that crunched like glass. The duck tasted very high-quality. Highly recommend. Overall, out of the many Chinese restaurants in Convoy, I would say to give this one a shot. Great food for reasonable prices. read more

We came here for lunch. 8 of us ordered 6 dishes to share. It was the perfect amount. For choice of three, i ordered BBQ pork, roast pork and roast dark. I really liked the roast pork. The house special pepper beef was great. The meat was very tender. Highly recommended. I also really liked the water spinach with garlic. The boiled spicy fish and pork chop were good but not as good as other dishes we ordered. The fried flat noodles with beef got good flavor but i preferred wider flat noodles. Overall, these Cantonese dishes are tasty for the area. It's usually pretty busy so i would recommend make a reservation. My mom and I came for soup, tea and rice. I am so glad we found this restaurant! We absolutely loved it! Service was fast, tables were clean, the food was delicious! We plan to come back for dinner and we plan on having duck. Definitely try them out! read more
Couldn't believe my eyes when I pull up on a Monday night and this place has a line out the door. I've got to say, they are incredibly efficient! We were seated within 10 minutes. Nice fresh pot of hot green tea on the table waiting for us. The interior of the dining room is small but very clean. There are maybe 12 tables inside. What really stood out to me was that everyone was enjoying the food and talking, I didn't see anyone on their phone during dinner. The server came to us almost immediately. He was no nonsense, getting it done! We ended up ordering the green beans with ground sausage, the beef chow fun and young chow rice. Those green beans were off the charts good. I had gotten delivery from here once before and had the barbecue pork with the beans, but they were out of it. At the Server's suggestion, we tried the ground pork and it was outstanding! 100% recommend this dish. The beef in the chow fun dish was cooked incredibly well. It was juicy and tender with just a little bit of crispiness on the outside coming a testament to how hot it must've been cooked. The noodles themselves were pretty good. Nice texture, but the flavor was unremarkable and they were over the top oily. I was a little bit, underwhelmed with the rice. It just didn't have that much flavor. Lots of little chunks of sausage but only like 3 shrimp. The shrimp seemed like they were steamed separately and then added to the rice. They had zero seasoning on them. What we did do is put some of the beans with the ground pork on the rice and that hit the spot! We could see they had a whole Peking duck available, but with just two of us, it didn't make sense to order a whole duck. Guess I'm just going to have to come back with some friends! All in all we were seated, ordered, ate our food and paid the check in under 45 minutes. We didn't get the feeling that they were rushing us out or anything. We were so full that we couldn't physically sit there comfortably any longer and we have enough leftovers for 2 more meals. read more
Came to Eastern Dynasty for a late Monday lunch around 1:30pm with a few friends, and it was nice and calm, not too busy. We ordered quite the spread: ginger scallion lobster noodles, shrimp & BBQ pork fried rice, walnut shrimp, wonton soup, stir-fried garlic green beans, and roast duck. Mid-meal, the owner surprised us with news that we were the lucky diners of the day and would receive a BOGO lobster promotion, free lobster! It caught us off guard since there weren't any signs or mentions of a promo, but hey, free food is free food. When it came out, the portion seemed small, maybe two very small lobsters and the noodles were unfortunately soggy and overcooked. The lobster meat was minimal, and the flavor leaned a little too salty for our taste. That said, a lot of other dishes really delivered. The fried rice was flavorful and well-executed, and the green beans were perfectly seasoned and delicious. The walnut shrimp was perfection - crispy, creamy, and just the right amount of sweetness. And the roast duck? Honestly one of the best I've had. Crispy skin, tender meat, and that rich, fatty flavor done right. Even with a mild shrimp sensitivity, I still risked a couple pieces (and a Zyrtec). The wonton soup was just okay, probably wouldn't order again. Service was attentive, they kept checking on us, changing out plates, and trying to make room on our (too small) table. We were sat at a 4-top, but with all the food we ordered, it got cramped quickly. They started trying to clear plates with a few pieces of food still left to make space, which I didn't love especially when it came to the duck I was still working on. Parking was easy at that time, but it's tough during peak hours. The restaurant is on the smaller side, so I probably wouldn't come with a large family group, but I'd definitely come back with friends. The bill was about $200 before tip, so yes, it's on the pricier side but with mostly great dishes, it felt worth it overall. read more
西湖牛肉羹 - Beef soup with cilantro. I HATE this soup but my wife loves it. Though I hate it, I've to admit they did an excellent job with the soup. The egg wash was done with perfect balance. The beef was cut perfectly. It's not minced. And flavor was good. 鹹魚雞粒炒飯粒炒 - Chinese anchovies chicken fried rice - This dish is how you can tell if they are traditional Cantonese style cuisine chef. It was well done. Not everyone like this dish because of the Chinese 燒肉燒鴨雙拼 - roast pork and roast duck combo - Impressive. The skin of the roast duck is crispy and the flavor was very good. It's legit! Roast pork was excellent at well. However, I prefer a more intense flavor. The skin was crunchy too. I'm delighted to find such good Cantonese cuisine in San Diego. I wish I've tried the beef chow fun and sweet and sour pork, that'll tell how good this place is. read more
Yum! Love family style Chinese (Cantonese) food. We got a little bit of everything, and all the dishes were tasty! Would definitely come back again. Pro tip: ask for the chili oil. Adds more dimension to the flavors, yum! Parking in the lot can get incredibly crowded. I ended up parking on the street. read more

It was a full house when we went, but great service. Things I ordered: Combination trio: I chose the crispy pork belly, roasted duck, & honey bbq pork. All so tender & flavorful. My favorite dish from everything I ordered. The drippings underneath all the meat made everything even more delicious. Ginger scallion lobster: sauce was a little bland, needed more salt. The noodles underneath was worse. But I liked the set price of $58. I'll have to try the salt & pepper next time & hope that has more flavor. Dry scallop egg white fried rice: needs more seasoning but we enjoyed the texture of everything & ate it all. Sweet & sour sauce: my husband ordered this & he enjoyed it. I'll definitely be back for the combination platters. Can't wait to try more on the menu. read more
Hands down the best Peking duck place in the San Diego area. I do miss the place I went to in the east coast but we come every year for my mom's birthday. Ask for the bones to take home for Peking duck and they'll give it to you. We normally get 2 Peking ducks for 4 people but this year we did 1peking duck and lobster. The only reason for 4 stars is servive. Normally it's good but when it's busy it's kinda poopy. read more

The roast squab, freshly baked, is crispy and delicious -- highly recommended! The garlic shrimp with steamed vermicelli is also very tasty.The stir-fried Chinese broccoli (gai lan) was a bit too oily for me; I had to rinse it with hot water before eating -- after all, I'm the group leader of the "Wellness Grand View Garden"!乳鸽現烤的又香脆又鮮美，最推薦！蒜蓉虾蒸粉絲，也很好吃 炒唐介兰，油多了一点，我需要用开水洗了再说，因為我是养生大观园的群主！ read more

Went other day for my belated birthday by a few friends. One of the top 3 Chinese food places in US I've eaten at. Great lobster salt and pepper, snow peas and scallops, roast duck, pork belly, sea bass sautéed, west lake soup, etc. really authentic. Waited 45 mins for dinner read more
Came here for Mother's day brunch. Parking is really bad here as with all Convoy restaurants. But if you dont mind finding street parking, you'll find plenty. Upon walking in right when they just opened, there was already a 1 hour wait. Glad we made reservations. The restaurant is very small. Ordered chicken wings and cucumber for starters. Came here for lunch on a weekend. It was just two of us and we luckily got the last table available. The place was very clean and updated. We asked for recommendations. Our server told us if it was our first time here to get the two course duck(comes with buns). We also added a side of noodles and broccoli. The servings were huge and we definitely took most of it home. The duck was sooo delicious. Perfectly crispy and the broccoli was also perfectly seasoned. Dined here earlier this evening for a friend's birthday and left full, happy, and in need of a nap. The restaurant is on the smaller side, and it's always busy, so I'd recommend making a reservation or coming early if you don't want to wait. It's clearly a local favorite. We ordered the peking duck, lobster, honey walnut shrimp, pork belly, clams and choy sum. The peking duck had crispy skin, juicy meat, and all the fixings (pancakes, hoisin sauce, scallions and cucumber). They were lacking in the cucumber, but were very generous in the amount of flour pancakes given. The lobster noodles were fresh and pretty good. It felt like a celebratory dish. The honey walnut shrimp was rich and creamy with a satisfying crunch. It was a perfect mix of sweet and savory. The pork belly was crispy and cooked perfectly. It was flavorful enough that the hoisin sauce that accompanied it wasn't even necessary. The ong choy was a good veggie contrast. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to try the clams. Service was attentive, and dishes came out pretty quickly. Despite the crowd, the staff kept things moving smoothly. The space is clean and good for groups or family dinners. Prices are on the higher side for some dishes, but the quality and portions felt fair. 4.5 stars if I could.. rounding up to 5. Oh yea, be ready to circle for parking during busy hours. read more
This recent visit was probably our 2nd trip to this restaurant. We ordered for 2 adults and 2 kids: 1) braised intestine stir fry - delicious 2) Beijing duck whole, they cook it 2 ways where they prepare the crispy skin to wrap with buns, and then they cook the leftover duck meat into small chunks to wrap with lettuce wrap. 3) pea sprouts - good flavor but rough stems 4) clams with basil - this was good, but have had better elsewhere Overall enjoyed our meal and would recommend others to come here for Chinese food! read more

My Son was craving for Chinese food, so we tried EASTERN DYNASTY. When we came in the space was not that big but it was bright and nice inside and the staff were very welcoming. The Green Tea was served to us upon sitting down. And it was an easy pick for me which one to order. I ordered the following for my Family: *PORK BELLY with Preserved Vegetables *CRISPY PAN FRIED NOODLES *COMBINATION PLATTER, a choice of 3 meats and I chose PORK, CHICKEN, and ROAST DUCK. *FRIED RICE with Chinese Sausage. *FRIED CHICKEN wings. I usually describe in my Reviews how each food tastes like, but since all of the foods we tried here were good, all I wanna say is that every food we ordered was tasty and good here, except for part of the Roast Duck since the skin wasn't crispy. The service was on point, our server kept checking on us. And I'm glad we came on a weekday 'coz there were a couple of parking spaces still available around. I have been here many times on the weekends in and finding a Parking here is the one annoying for me. read more

For the two of us to share: we ordered the Cantonese roast duck, a half portion for $21 and choy sum vegetables with garlic $17.(prices in person were lower than on the website) we also got an order of white rice for each of us. The total bill with a tip was $65 which we considered reasonable for the amount and the excellence of the food. The Cantonese duck is worth going there for by itself. It's roasted to perfection in a delicious barbecue sauce. And it was a lot of duck. my husband commented that the broccoli and garlic sauce was cooked exactly right. Tender with a little bite to it. Very fresh and nice. ditto the little bowls of white rice: perfectly cooked and tender. Over all there was plenty of food to take home which will be dinner for us tonight. So for $65 we got four meals. Green tea was served with the meal. Andy the owner was there. this was my third trip to Eastern Dynasty and I noticed that things go much more smoothly when Andy is there. (a hint to you Andy) Atmosphere is nice, service was excellent. One concern: The decor is attractive, but it is all hard surfaces, so once there were a few more people, conversations bounced around and it got very noisy very fast. bottom line this is an outstanding Asian restaurant. If you get there at opening time at 11 AM, you can get a parking spot in the lot. It gets very full and crowded in the lot very soon. read more
Well Another Gem Located on Convoy Street !! Well we were craving some delicious Chinese Food and let me tell you there are quite a few spots on Convoy Street so we like to try all of them now here we go with Eastern Dynasty Chinese Restaurant . First we walk in and was greeted and seated . Next we look over the menu and they got quite a selection of Chinese food . Well we placed our order with the server and did not have to wait to long but our order came out and let me tell you it was delicious and it has to be one of the best Chinese Restaurant in San Diego . Service was ok we had to ask for water but food is on point . If you're looking for a Good Chinese Restaurant to try give Eastern Dynasty a Try . You won't be disappointed !! It is located in the China Max Shopping Center kind of close to China Max Restaurant . Overall enjoyed the food and we Shall be back and enjoy more !!! read more

Unfortunately no. It's very traditional and gluten is even in the rice.
How is the food?
For Cantonese food in San Diego, it's one of the best. Depending on your point of reference: definitely an "A" grade for San Diego or even the USA. A "B" for location agnostic (i.e. compared to food in HK or Vancouver / Toronto Canada).
Do they make reservations? They're not answering their phone.
Only for major groups, like 20 I believe. They answer their phone sporadically- we had to stop in once to order take out
Do they use MSG? If so, can I ask for a dish to be prepared without it?
I don't think they use MSG and if they do, must be insignificant amounts because I am sensitive to MSG and my body did not detect MSG. MSG makes me sweat profusely like I am exercising and I did not sweat with this food.
Do they take a break after lunch and before dinner time?
