First time playing a tournament at Lyceum last weekend and what a horrible experience it was. We have been playing AAU tournaments for 4 years and never have played in a gym with the roof and support beams being so low. The basketball courts were definitely put in as an after thought to maximize the amount of courts for the small location. So many teams, young kids 4th and 5th grade would hit the roof / support beams while shooting. Tournament directors need to beware of the subpar courts with Lyceum Village as there are so many better options like OGP, AIm, The Map, and Momentus which is only a block away. read more

We've been with Lyceum for nearly three years, starting with our daughter, and now our youngest shas also joined their phenomenal basketball program. Gym is unsuitable for basketball. The roof should be minimum 25 feet. The problem is roof is like 15ft right past the 3 point line which makes no sense. The quality of this gym and the price you have to pay for the basketball tournament and admission is not worth it. read more

My son joined Lyceum Village 2-3 years ago as a third grader. I have seen phenomenal growth in his playing skills in the last 3 years. The coaches, Coach Reza, Coach E and Coach Cliff are amazing and care a lot about the kids. I was looking for a basketball program in the Irvine area that would help my 8th grade son grow skill wise, but not be as intensive as a travel ball club team. Lyceum's program was perfect for these goals! This program offered twice a week practice along with weekend leagues and/ or tournaments. Travel was limited to Orange County for the most part. The convenience of Lyceum having their own indoor court really made things convenient. Reza was very accommodating and really cared about teaching the game of basketball. His emphasis was always on learning and improving vs. winning at all costs. I appreciated that. Coach E. brought a wealth of knowledge and coaching experience to the learning experience as well. The boys really respected and learned a lot from him. My son made big improvements in his skill level and will most likely make and perform well on his high school team as a result. We have attended French classes and basketball camps at Lyceum. It's a great facility and a wonderful concept.

I have filed a formal complaint and look forward to updating my review upon the completion of the investigation into whether Lyceum is in compliance with State Health & Safety regulations - which govern both licensed AND non-licensed institutions. Red flags started appearing for me when I noticed the lack of transparency & communication from Darlene, Susan and Jared. In particular, I was concerned that my kids were reporting that the bulk of their 'genius' homework time was being supervised by 'team leaders' who were only in 5th grade or by supervisors whom I had never met - which made sense since their homework was filled with errors and did not appear to be completed with proper supervision. When I followed up with all 3 individuals (I have several email threads as documentary evidence), I was told to come to their first ever "Back to After School" Night and to ask all of the questions I had about my kids schedules (which appeared to be changing without any prior communication with me or my husband) and supervision. When I expressed my concerns about the lack of proper supervision at the parent session - another mother affirmed my concerns and expressed her own concerns about the proper ratio of adults to children. While she was still talking, Reza (Susan's husband) interrupted her, in a very hostile manner, and rudely claimed that he was a "majority shareholder", and told her (and me) that if we wanted our children to be babysat or individually tutored - that Lyceum wasn't for us. *BTW - this is also a red flag since 501c3 (which is how Lyceum is legally registered) do not have shares/shareholders and are supposed to be NON-profit. Shortly afterwards (while still in the back to school session), I was advised (via email - through another friend whose child was also attending Lyceum) that a very troubling incident had occurred earlier that day. Both my daughter & my friend's daughter are severely allergic to peanuts and had previously advised Darlene about our concerns regarding Lyceum's lack of protocols around allergies. Earlier that day, we found out (which was later corroborated by Bethel - the 20-year old "genius" who was supervising our children that day) that an older girl had not only physically assaulted my friend's daughter but proceeded to pull out a peanut butter sandwich and had waved it threateningly to both my daughter and my friend's daughter. What was most concerning was that Bethel apparently told her to stop - but this girl CONTINUED to pursue our daughters with the peanut butter sandwich 3-4 more times. *UPDATE: This this has all been corroborated and acknowledged by Bethel, the girl and her family and Lyceum management. What is MOST concerning (and what ultimately prompted my research into whether Lyceum was properly licensed/legally compliant with state regulations) was that immediately after the 'back to school' night, my friend and I approached Susan to talk to her about this incident. Unlike any individual I have ever met in an educational setting - Susan physically backed away from us and frantically ushered 2 bewildered 20-year old employees to us and claimed that these 20-year old employees were responsible for the incident because they were the ones who had been present when this peanut butter incident occurred. I specifically remember scoffing at how the OWNER of Lyceum Village could pass the brunt of responsibility to such a serious incident to 2 of her 20-year old employees?! When I attempted to question her further - she put up both of her hands and claimed that tonight was too "hectic" of an environment for her to deal with our situation. I looked her straight in the eye and asked her how she could be running an after school program with 50+ children if she found it "hectic" to be approached by 2 concerned mothers?! Words cannot express how disappointed I am at Lyceum's complete disregard for proper health and safety policies/procedures and at their incompetence and unprofessionalism in dealing with valid concerns from parents like myself. I only write this for the protection of other children and hope other parents will do their research and due diligence before enrolling at this unlicensed and unqualified after school program. read more

[I'm updating to add comments on the afterschool program--my previous review was only about summer camp.] Lyceum Village is a gem.  I randomly discovered it because I work in the area, and when my kids were little I used to pass it on my walk to lunch.  My initial interest was just that when my kids were old enough, it would be nice to have them in afterschool/summer care near my office.  But once I actually looked into it, I discovered that Lyceum Village was unique--nothing else like it in OC as far as I know. So after my job went remote, I decided it was still worth the drive to Tustin to enroll my daughter in summer camp there and try it out.  She was really happy. They took excellent care of the kids--so much thought and care put into every activity.  The activities were educational while being hands-on and fun, like learning food chemistry while baking bread, or building solar cookers and making s'mores. The level of sophistication in the educational activities was impressive; e.g. my little daughter came home talking about Jackson Pollock. We have continued in the afterschool program, which has more of a daily structure than the camp. Lyceum Village continues to be lovely. My daughter gets to explore interests ranging from art to chess to piano to hip-hop to tae kwon do. She can fill her afternoons exploring a smorgasbord of activities, the range of which is beyond what I could have helped her pursue on my own (I wouldn't even have thought of hip-hop). Exploring all these activities lets her find out what she enjoys, and is good at. Also while OC has great public schools, at her grade level there isn't a lot of art, music, or foreign language--things I *did* have in school growing up outside California and that helped make me who I am. Lyceum enables me to supplement regular school with these. The LV staff are devoted, caring and conscientious. Akiko in particular is brilliant--enough said.  Well OK, let me add a little more detail--she treats everyone from adults to kids with kindness, empathy, and warmth, and looks after all the kids. She thinks of everything, and remembers details like IBM Watson would (I mean, if IBM Watson were a deeply caring person and not a powerful supercomputer). As a mom and a corporate employee, I know how tough it is to multitask and frame switch between different tasks all day, deal with many different people and personalities, and not forget anything. It's high-stress and tough, and it takes a special individual, which Akiko is. One thing I love about LV is that my daughter has made close friends who don't go to her school, as well as ones who do but who are in other classes/grades, and whom she might not have met in school. That she make friends is important to me, as we moved to our current location in 2020 and then COVID happened. My daughter has said that she finds LV a more conducive environment to making friends than school. In short, as a working mom, if I have to spend afternoons apart from my daughter, I want to make sure those afternoons are enriching her life--that she learns things, has fun, and feels safe. LV gives me that. LV isn't childcare to kill time until parents get off work; it is a program that helps make them well-rounded kids. I myself am a former liberal arts college professor, and the program is very much aligned with my values and how I would like to educate my kids. I would go so far as to say that the fact that afterschool programs like this exist is a reason to live in the area--that there is a demand from parents for high quality afterschool programs, and someone with the vision to start such a program. My family has been associated with the Lyceum for a year now and we would like to thank Reza and Dr Susan for what has become a fruitful relationship which has benefited ourselves and our daughters. My oldest daughter has been a part of the girls basketball club at the lyceum over the last three basketball seasons. We struggled for years to get her playing time. Thanks to the dedicated program at the lyceum, she has grown in skill and confidence into a great player and person. I especially like the Lyceum program's emphasis on development over winning and losing. Everybody gets playing time. Everybody get better. We have also partaken of the Lyceum's other programs for our children including piano lessons and math tutoring. the array of sports, academic and music programs offered to kids at the lyceum is staggering. We are so thankful for Lyceum. They have done a wonderful job helping our kids develop into who they are. Our kids love the atmosphere and always look forward to going in everyday. Thank you to Dr. Susan Boettger! Our daughter is now a proud OCSA Instrumental Music Conservatory student because of Lyceum's Private Music Lesson program. This is a long overdue review specifically about Lyceum's Private Music Lesson program, NOT the after school program, which I have no experience with. But based on my observation, Lyceum runs a tight ship in that regard as well. My daughter decided she wanted to audition for OCSA, so a friend involved in Junior Chamber Music told us about Lyceum Village. We made an appointment to go in and met Dr. Susan Boettger, who is the founder of Lyceum, and the Artistic and Executive Director of JCM. She is professional, attentive, caring, and absolutely passionate about what she does. I won't say it was a smooth experience from the start, because we did have a unpleasant issue with scheduling with the initial teacher. But Dr. Susan Boettger personally took cared of the issue and every concern that I had. She was always in communication, scheduled us with a new teacher, worked around our schedule, and made sure the new teacher is compatible with my daughter. AND she checked on my daughter's progress regularly! That was amazing considering how busy she is. Then Akiko came along. Another amazing human being that truly cares about what she does at Lyceum. She reached out to me, introduced herself and did everything she could to ensured my daughter is doing all right and helped us with any concerns that we had. She is the go-to person that can help you on all things on the administrative side of things. Then of course the teacher, Michelle Park. A fantastic, amazing, and phenomenal teacher! She LISTENED to us, understood our goal, and created a roadmap, a plan to help my daughter reach that goal. Ms. Park is patient, caring, and firm. She genuinely cares about her student's success and she is great at adjusting/modifying, and come up with different methods to help her students understand a topic/concept. She is always thinking about how to help each student as they all have their unique weakness, and she always work relentlessly and tirelessly to help her students. We are very grateful to Lyceum, Dr. Susan Boettger, Akiko Leone, and Ms. Michelle Park, without them, my daughter wouldn't be pursuing her dream now, and I wouldn't be writing this review. By the way, we went to Lyceum one full year before my daughter auditioned and she worked extremely hard. They are professionals at Lyceum, but they are not miracle workers or magicians. read more

My son attended some camps during summer and he really had a great time playing basketball and developing skills thanks to a very qualified instructor (I played basketball in high school and college, so I know what I'm talking about!). He also learned about robotics, arts, etc. He liked it so much he asked us (my husband and I both work full-time) to come back for this school year. We love the space, the large spectrum of choices in classes (art, music, sport, coding, robotics, foreign language etc.). He's making new friends and every day comes back with new things he has learned. It's very rare in OC to find a place where kids can do multi activities in only one location. If they are bored with one subject, they can try something else another time. It's very convenient. We also don't have to worry about driving every where and making sure we're on time!! This is going to be a godsend for me, mother of 3 and with a career I love. I love that my kids will be able to get top teachers in their activities in one place. This will be so much more efficient than me driving around town like a stress case. I'm especially excited about the upcoming Winter Camp in January, which will be the one time they can do art AND music AND sports AND speech. Lyceum Village offers an array of great activities for kids. My daughter has been in the girls basketball club team for about a year. Coach Velina has taught her so much, you can definitely see the improvement. They are always offering top notch coaching for the girls to be more competitive and have great sportsmanship. I love the fact that this place has several elite programs going on. As busy parents we are always looking to see what is more convenient for us time wise and this place doesn't disappoint. We all know that each child is different from the other so if one wants to do Music they can while the other one participates in Art class. My daughter has been part of the basketball team for awhile now and the coaching staff that Reza has been providing is phenomenal. This place does not conduct background checks. Facilities where adults (18 years and up) that have the capacity to be alone with young children, to my understanding, are mandated by the state to have background checks. Parents, I would also inquire about their requirements on TB testing. Safely is one of every parents' top concerns. In addition, there are concerns for the safety of the children who are left alone at times during piano practice. A proctor is not there at all times. The first floor of Lyceum is rented out, doors are sometimes left open, and people can walk in and out of the building. The lack of security for our little ones is extremely distressing. I like the variety that Lyceum Village provides, but as a parent who has to entrust my young child to a stranger, it's important to know they are safe and cared for in a nourishing environment. read more
