I had this restaurant on my list of places to visit for a long time. The food was OK, but not worth the trip from VA. I know it's hard making fresh vegetables everyday; but can green beans doctored up isn't the answer especially when you use frozen potatoes to do so. The fried whiting was good; but the fried shrimp had no taste. Like most patrons, I ordered to go. The service was ok. I went on Good Friday. They were packed. I tried to call ahead but got a recording that they weren't taking any phone orders. So I made the ride to Bryan's Road. Parking was ample. No problems at all. I walked in to a line of about 10 people & most of the seats and booths full of people waiting. While waiting in line I went online to put in my order. About 30 minutes later once I got to the counter since my order wasn't ready yet I got an Italian ice to enjoy while I waited. It took a lot another 30 minutes before my order was ready. We had fish, shrimp, macaroni and cheese, greens cabbage and cornbread. The food was good. I added salt & protocol the Mac & cheese & vinegar & hot sauce to the greens. The portions aren't very big. My husband had 2 pieces of whiting and they seemed small to me. But my portion was good. My Italian ice was delicious. read more

Let's start with the positives: the lemonade was GREAT! Unfortunately, the food fell flat. I came in on a Sunday afternoon. The place was empty--maybe a sign--but to be fair, the nearby restaurants had no foot traffic either. I ordered fried catfish (extra crispy), mac-n-cheese, green beans, yellow rice, and a kids meal (popcorn chicken, fries, juice, and snack). The fried fish wasn't catfish--it was definitely whiting. It wasn't fried crispy as requested and lacked seasoning. The yellow rice was dry. The chicken poppers were dry too. The green beans tasted straight out of a tin can. The fries had no seasoning either. Overall, the meal was very disappointing, especially for almost $40. On the bright side, the restaurant looked nice with red accents. Unfortunately, the person behind the counter wasn't friendly and acted like we were bothering him. I also heard someone coughing in the back. When I asked the cashier if that was the cook, he said no--but when the man coughing walked out, he definitely looked like the cook. All in all, I won't be coming back. This veteran owned establishment literally has saved my Friday nights! I grew up on having fried fish on Fridays, and most of the time, no one feels like cooking fish in their home, let's face it, the smell lingers. Here, the food comes out, piping hot and is absolutely delicious! They pride themselves on getting your orders out and the shortest time allotted. The sides are amazing. While headed to Nanjemoy to see friends I decided to stop here for lunch. The food was really really good. My family is from Georgia and Mississippi we know good soul food and this is it. The Mac n cheese was on point. The catfish and whiting was fire. The collards were good. My daughter's kids meal was perfect and very thoughtfully put together. She loved the popcorn chicken and fries and the snack and caprisun was the perfect inclusion to the meal. I hope this restaurant succeeds. Although I would say it's always hard to see if they are open if your driving around the parking lot because it looks dark and closed, so be sure to actually walk up to the door. Unfortunately, this was not good got the turkey wings dinner, the mac and cheese, the cheese is not real, but the top layer is, the cheese used, is the box cheese and the turkey wings were not seasoned but the gravy is good and the cabbage ok. I read the No refund policy after I paid for my food, if and food establishment states that you will not get a refund, apparently something is wrong, maybe the food was not seasoned etc, or maybe the fried food is better, I will not try and find out. I waited a while before patronizing them, waiting for the reviews to come in. Let me start with the service, it was fantastic (Judy deserves a raise-lol) at least. The staff were really helpful and friendly. The food - was delicious. Well seasoned, fresh and good portions. We got the fried whiting, cabbage and greens. I didn't get to taste it because wifey tore it up, but did say it was delicious, however, my smothered pork chops, greens, Mac (I don't play when it comes to my M&C) and cheese were also delicious. Finally! Something in my small community worthy of a 5-star review! I loved everything about this place from the food to the owners! So you're being forewarned, this is a long love letter review about this place. First things first, the food: The fried whiting was amongst the absolute best I've ever had! Perfectly crispy, not fried too "hard" although I know many people prefer their fish fried hard. However, that dries it out and makes it difficult to even tell it was fish! The batter was very flavorful. I didn't even "need" the hot sauce or tartar sauce. The pork chop was awesome! That too had a flavorful batter and wasn't fried too hard, the meat was still juicy and the battered still adhered. The fried chicken wings weren't over-seasoned and were wonderfully crispy, although they didn't taste completely fresh. I may have ordered an early-made batch. The mac and cheese was decent. The cabbage had a great flavor but was over cooked. I wasn't crazy about the crab cake (it wasn't exactly a MD crab cake, definitely not lump crabmeat so lower your expectations there) but it was fresh and homemade. The butterflied shrimp were just okay. They were more like the frozen from-the-box variety. The French fries were great, as I love a good crinkle cut. The steak and cheese sandwich was really good as well. I made the mistake of ordering extra meat because every sandwich I ever order elsewhere is light on the meat and heavy on the bread, but that was NOT necessary here. The sandwich is already loaded with plenty of meat. I know this was already a lot of food, but I can't wait to go back and try more things! As for the customer service, it was truly unmatched! I spoke at length with the owner, Mrs. Denise(sp?), the "D" in M&D, and she couldn't have been more gracious! She shared her and her husband's story of their business-owning journey, all while simultaneously serving a couple food and ancillaries, minding her children who were eating in another booth, answering phones, monitoring food quality control AND training an employee on the register! The entire staff there was so kind to every single customer and even the kitchen staff came from the back and actually engaged with customers despite their not having a front-of-house role. My very large order was hot and ready pretty fast, especially since I know most of my order included items required to be made fresh-to-order, although I'm sure online orders are likely faster. But I was happy to wait as it gave me an opportunity to talk with the pleasant owner. The prices are reasonable and respectable. Although this is more of a Carryout style establishment, they have several nice comfortable booths, tables and chairs to eat inside, and a few TVs on the walls. They also have quite a bit of decor showcasing positive thinking, historical figures in Black culture and displays of their Christian faith. One of my favorite things about this place and the owners is that they've worked their way up to this storefront from the bottom, starting out by selling dinners right out of their kitchen, to a food truck, then a smaller space deeper into Southern MD, and now here. And I loved that they had their young children inside the restaurant during open hours, even hanging out in the kitchen, and helping out with small chores. This is valuable experience for them observing how a business is operated successfully, particularly by their strongest influences, their parents. M&D are teaching a master class to their children by including them in their business process, whether intentionally or not. As we all have observed, other cultures do this consistently, so it was wonderful to see a Black family do the same. Now, I'm going to support Black businesses regardless (call me crazy, dumb, whatever, judge not lest ye be judged, okay?), although I'm always honest with the owners/managers about my experience so they know where they may improve or make changes, but this place made me proud to support it and not feel like a Stockholmer. So do NOT miss an opportunity to try this place. I guarantee you will have nothing but love for it! read more

My family and I have been looking for fish dinners in the area. I heard that a new place moved into the deserted Bryans Road Shopping Center. I saw M & D Chicken and Fish! First of all......when I entered, the place was exceptionally clean and the owner spouse Danielle welcomed me!!! Sad to say, it's extremely RARE to be pleasantly greeted at a place of business these days!! She was very friendly and welcoming! I felt compelled to greet the other customers who were eating. They spoke highly of the food and customer service too!! So, I ordered 1 catfish dinner and 2 whiting dinners with macaroni and cheese, cabbage and green beans! It's been a VERY long time eating perfectly seasoned/ fried fish. The menu has a nice variety too, which almost made it difficult to order. While waiting, I asked about the chicken wings under the heat lamp, so ordered some while waiting and we LOVED them too!! We ALL LOVED our dinners and my mom returned later that week for another fish dinner. My mom said the fish was perfect and the sides were delicious too!! My daughter was here visiting and she's still raving about her fish dinner!! Later that week, my mom went back and ordered another fish dinner! Still HAPPY! Fried Whiting is good but expensive now. If u like heavy VINEGAR, COLE SLAW AND HEAVY VINEGAR GREENS THIS is ur place. They charge u two different prices for credit or debit card, if u pay cash its different charge. The attitude is horrible, it's sad because u look to support ur community and here u go and upcharge. Pictures do it zero justice for how The flavors were authentic, and it reminded me of grandmas cooking. The staff's warm hospitality made me feel right at home.
