This is the first time we have visited Ogunquit and before coming down we made reservations at MC Perkins Cove. Once we got here we found mostly full parking lots with high parking fees and the restaurant has no parking of its own. I called to cancel our reservations and was told nothing about cancelation fees. Later, when I checked email, I found that we had been charged $40 to cancel. As busy as the whole area is there is no way that our table remained empty. Needless to say, we will not be back. read more

We were disappointed. Beautiful location but food and service were lackluster. Brussel sprouts were inedible bc of the salt (had to send back), tartar special had maybe 3 root chips to put it on, heirloom tomato salad were absolutely not all heirloom tomatoes and just overall bland, and the foie gras brioche was soggy (not in a good way) and couldn't tell what was foie gras and what was bread. Will say the duck confit was fantastic but needed a defined starch to go with it as the potato side was buried underneath and didn't realize it was there until the end. And honestly our female server really needs some training as she seemed not to know what to say along the journey. She just kept saying "are you finished or still enjoying?" from drinks to apps to mains. Again, lackluster and I know servers are probably summer jobs here but need more training and to hire people who, well...like other people. The shrimp was extremely salty! Horrible! They did NOT acknowledge special occasion events, even though they made multiple assurances that they would. They did not tell us that there would be an additional charge for a vegetable topping. A server should ALWAYS tell a customer if they are going to have an additional charge on their bill! read more

After a wonderful experience our first time there, we decided to return. We were seated at our requested window table, with its nice water view. There the positives end. This visit was spoiled by poor service. After being told by our waiter that our food was coming, 45 minutes after our order was taken, we were dismayed that our entrees were delivered and they completely forgot our salad. Where was the salad we ordered for our first course? And where was the second glass of red wine my wife ordered? We ordered a seafood dish with clams, mussels, haddock, and shrimp atop a pasta in a "saffron" sauce, and a grilled beef tenderloin with potatoes and grilled asparagus. The seafood dish featured perfectly prepared fish and shellfish, but the sauce had little flavor. I sampled the beef tenderloin, which had a nice flavor but was otherwise indistinguishable. The long wait for food, as well as the scatterbrained attitude of our waiter, made this dining experience so uncomfortable that we decided to skip dessert and just pay our bill and leave. And we had to pay for parking a princely sum to make matters even more adverse. We won't be back. read more

I'm writing to warn the public: Owner, Javier Nava, of M.C. at Perkins Cove publicly demoralizes staff and guests. Visit the Cliff House instead for free valet parking and an experience that truly puts you first. It's all about your comfort and satisfaction, not an owner-centered display. And when issues arise, accountability is handled with professionalism rather than shifting blame onto the staff. The Cliff house restaurants each have jaw-dropping, panoramic oceanfront views -- breathtaking scenery you have to see to believe. I agree with Tim Mattingly's previous review posted below saying "Javier, you may not have been an owner at the time but you were General Manager so my review stands. Update 6 years later: My wife and I were just discussing our worst restaurant experience in the entire world and we agreed it is this place. Original review: TERRIBLE!!! Rude arrogant management." Here's why I agree with him: We initially had a 6:45 pm reservation at M.C. and called about 30 minutes prior to ask if we may possibly sit on the oceanfront deck? The receptionist assured us that we could if we come right away to get the best available table. We hop in the car and arrive 20 minutes early and the host tells us she'll seat us at the oceanfront table as soon as it's cleared and reset. We're told that the table is specifically being made ready for us. Not only is the restaurant empty, the deck is empty, and there's no one in line for the next 20 minutes. Then suddenly, for no reason, the owner (Javier Nava) intervenes and instructs the host not to seat us at the oceanfront table -- even after the she tries to explain to him what she promised us - he cuts her off and instructs her not to seat us there, directing her instead to seat us at the worst table on the deck: it was so cramped in a corner that we were not even able to face each other -- we were effectively boxed in next to the only other 2 guests. I was practically sitting on a male stranger's lap! To make things worse, the staff and host actively resetting the table for us are forced to put us in an unfair position as they're aggressively being micromanaged and treated under pressure while instinctively just trying to provide basic, good quality service. After we're marched up and down the stairs several times, the owner instructs the very next couple who walk in (20 minutes after us) to be seated at the same table they reset for us. After this, we politely decline to eat and leave. As Maine natives, we're genuinely shocked by the lack of consistency, respect, and professionalism the owner of M.C. portrays. I'm a doctor and the owner of a private practice and my husband is an actuary working as a data scientist. Every other restaurant in Perkin's Cove sits us at any open table we like. After all, who cares? Just go to the Cliff House for free valet parking and exceptional service. The focus stays on the guest experience--courteous, attentive, and tailored to your needs. This is the difference between service-minded leadership and self-centered management. The Cliff House offers reliable service you can feel--thoughtful, welcoming, and genuinely customer-focused. My wife Carolyn and our dear friends Chris and Cheryl recently dined at this lovely fine dinning establishment. The dining room has many large windows laying bare the expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean. We were looking forward to a very special culinary experience. All is well until Cheryl is served onion rings that were soggy and undercooked. The kitchen had just been opened and we the among the very first to be served. It's likely the oil was simply not hot at the required temperature to properly fry the onion rings. No big deal The server will gladly take them away and return with onion rings that are crispy instead of soggy. Afterall, it's just an appetizer right? Wrong! The sever took them away and upon returning declared that they are supposed to be almost white in color and soggy. Oh, would you like to try French fries instead? No problem, as long as you understand that the cost of the unediible onion rings will not be removed from your bill and you will be charged for the fries. By the way, our bill without any alcohol or dessert was a little over $200 including tip for our party of four seniors. One would think that the chef or manager or owner would accommodate the reasonable request of a patron to have onion rings that were not gooey. Evidently, this dining establishment has no class whatsoever or any desire for their customers to be happy with the food they ordered. We will never return. Chris and Cheryl own their own home in Kennebunk and often walk the the Marginal Way path along the shoreline that is just a hundred yards from this restaurant. They are actually repeat customers. However, after this gross disregard for a customer's simple request they or my wife and I will never set foot in this haughty establishment again. Last year, I would have given M.C. Perkins Cove 5 stars. Did management or the executive chef changed? This summer, I feel that this restaurant is no longer fine dining. The view is excellent, of course but the food needs improvement. Fish Taco: should be one piece of fish, not small square pieces of fish. It was also hardly fried. Either do a good frying or serve grilled, not a weird in between. Lobster Roll: Wow. I expected so much more. Aside from it being rather small, the lobster meat was chewy, chewy, chewy. Would never get the lobster roll here again. Sweet Cheese Creme Brûlée: There was hardly any brulee on this dessert. It also tasted like it was torched and then stored in a fridge. Didn't taste freshly torched. Shrimp & Risotto: The risotto was good, the shrimp was undercooked even though I asked for the shrimp to be cooked more on the well done side. M.C. We came here for lunch before going to the Ogunquit Playhouse for a matinee. Too bad parking is such a bear. We had to pay $20. to park up the street from the cove. I wish eateries or chamber of commerce would offer some discount to help subsidize to cost of folks coming to eat or shop. We had made reservations and were immediately sat in a primo location in the corner with floor to ceiling windows and we felt like rock stars...... until our very embarrassed host came and moved us to another table saying she had put us at the wrong table. She was apologetic and our actual table was a lovely window table on the side of the dining room with smaller windows. We enjoyed the view. Two of us got the eggplant gyro which tastes less mediterranean and more like indian curry, but still good. I got the fish tacos which come as a pair. It was delicious but left me a tiny bit hungry still, so I split a pavlova with my friend for dessert and the coffee gelato was so good. The pavlova combo was a little too sweet for us. We shared the crab fritter appetizer which was delicious but very small. The prices were not too bad, but don't expect large servings. The service was amazing. VIBE: The dining room was pleasantly rustic, with a nice view of the cove. Lighting was atmospherically dim. Noise level was tolerable. SERVICE: Staff were hospitable; our server was briskly attentive. Food was well coursed and arrived promptly. FOOD: A Caesar salad was OK. The warm cabbage salad was reported to be quite good, with nice flavor and nicely melted cheese. One person said their bistro burger was good, and that the fries were large and "real." The others of us had shrimp and clams on risotto: the shrimp were plump, juicy and delicious; the clams were dry and overcooked; the risotto was OK. There was a good selection of wines by the glass. Overall, I'd say everything was A-OK, but not quite a 4. It wouldn't be at the of my list on a future visit to the area. read more

The establishment requires business casual, the owner must also be in the car wash business as he was dressed in dirty overwashed blue jeans and a just as tired Hawaii shirt. We opted for house / local water which had a terrible taste which made us double think any food items that might require washing. The service was haphazard at best as we never actually knew who our server was but one of the waiters did find it amusing to sing aloud when he was bored. After years of admiring M.C. Perkins Cove from afar, I decided to make a reservation here to celebrate a special occasion. They have a positive reputation and I was excited for my dining experience. The bar was comfortable and the bartender was energetically friendly. The martini glass was sleek and chilled with ice. I was ecstatic to see that they carried another local vodka and I couldn't wait to try it. Ice Pik Vodka was smooth and gluten-free. The flavor was so light and delicate that it was perfect to drink straight. It had a refreshing taste and left me wanting more. The cocktail was served with only two firm, salty olives. My hangups at this restaurant were in the menu, food, and overall experience. The menu was creative but limited and since we were dining next to the Atlantic Ocean, I would have preferred to see more seafood options. They also had a hard rule of no substitutions and as a diner with many food restrictions, this made it challenging and ultimately frustrating. Additionally, the service was slow, I suspect because they were understaffed, and while I sympathize, this also added to a disappointing guest experience. I had a sense from reading the menu that this was perhaps a restaurant trying too hard to creatively "gourmet-ify" what is probably best left simple. Indeed, that's what it proved to be. Meh. Bland. Boring. That, and the portions were skimpy. The food served warm-to-cool (not hot), and really lackluster service. There seemed to be an absence of care in the vibe of the place, except for the interior design, which was definitely upscale. But we weren't there for that. So good The good - French fries were solid, BLT was solid The ok - can't think of anything. Great view and very picturesque! Love Ogunquit but I was not impressed with my meal here. Just had the Shrimp cocktail (5 in total). Large shrimp with no taste at all-actually yuck! (cocktail sauce subpar). I was surprised too because it was Maine shrimp. How is their shrimp not delicious being on the ocean in Maine? Another family member had the Seafood chowder. It was ok. Smooth not chunky. This is my second time at MC. The first time I had their baked Salmon which was tasty. ***UPDATE*** WOW. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that this restaurant would respond in this way. Rather than try and make amends or make things right, they decide to take it up a notch. If you don't like critiques, this isn't the right industry for you. 1. We were not late. I arrived at 6:50 for a 6:45 reservation after calling the host to let them know parking was impossible. I would NEVER be late without calling a restaurant. 2. We would never mistreat a service professional. Ever. It is not our job to smile the entire time- but I do believe that it is a service professional's job to smile and be pleasant. 3. If you mess up an order- it is not 'on you'- it is a mistake. That needs to be replaced free of charge. If you mess the replacement up- same rule applies. 4. We did make clear that we wanted a new Foie- not the same one heated up. As heating up a cold Foie is not going to go well. (See below...) 5. Most importantly our server, the owner, Dana, was actually the miserable person in this relationship. From beginning to end. She never smiled or welcomed us to her restaurant. She was the hostile entity- spilling wine all over the table in an aggressive manner because she didn't get her way. We should feel like we are being welcomed into your home, not your machine. 6. We never yelled. We never threatened. We communicated our needs and feelings honestly and you failed spectacularly at meeting this very basic goal. Feel free to cut and paste your reply to us. I never do this. As a hospitality professional for 25+ years, it takes something truly awful to happen for me to come onto a public platform and negatively review a business. My husband and I just left possibly the worst meal and experience of our lives. Ironically we were waited on by owner Dana Gregory, who completely had it in her power to turn our experience around. But she refused. My husband ordered the Foie gras as an entree (his favorite dish), and sadly it arrived cold. Like really cold. We let Dana know, and she said she would 'warm it up.' This is where things head south. We said could you please make a fresh one rather than heat this one up as foie is very sensitive to being overcooked. 3 minutes later we received our 'new' foie which was just the old foie cut in half and overcooked within an inch of its life. Not edible. We let Dana know, she argued, and asked for the check. Which included the Foie which was not edible either time. She angrily poured my white wine splashing the table. Refused to make eye contact. And finally kicked us out! I suppose the best part was not having to pay for the mediocre food or the absolutely terrible service. As an owner you should always strive to turn people around and make a return guest. Regardless of whether or not you agree with an opinion, it should not be met with the hostility that we received. No eye contact, aggressively clearing our plates, and just general awfulness. Unfortunately for all Dana is not capable of acting like a hospitable human adult, hence here I am to let you all know. read more

Terrible Customer Service - Avoid This Restaurant We had a disappointing experience at M.C. Perkins Cove that we feel compelled to warn others about. We made a reservation weeks in advance, but the morning of our visit, our son came down with pink eye. We immediately tried to cancel, explaining the situation while scrambling to find antibiotics on vacation. Despite our circumstances, they refused to allow cancellation and would not return our calls or texts requesting cancellation. We then tried to cancel in person. The owner was dismissive. He told us they had a waitlist but because they confirm reservations the day before, they could not accommodate our request to cancel and allow the waitlist people to fill our spot. When we arrived, we ordered appetizers, drinks, and dinner. We then watched as many other dishes were served to customers who arrived after us. Our food finally arrived over an hour after our appetizers and long after the wine we ordered to go with our meal was gone. After all of that waiting, the special entree arrived cold. It felt like the long wait time was intentional and that the kitchen was told to slow walk our order because we had tried to cancel our reservation. This restaurant clearly does not value their customers. They showed no compassion for our situation, provided terrible communication, and appeared to retaliate through poor service. We would strongly advise others to avoid this establishment and choose one of the many other excellent restaurants in the area that actually care about their customers. Not one to write a review but in this case, I feel I have to since our experience was awesome, the place s/b recognized for it. From the minute we walked through the door on a busy Saturday night we were made to feel welcomed and invited, despite our 8:00 table for 4 resi not being ready they made sure we were well attended to. The table was occupied by a few guests that were "overstaying" their welcome. The owner (Javier) was quick to point out that he noticed in the resi that both couples were celebrating wedding anniversaries and had a "special" table for us if we were willing to wait a little longer. We waited about 15 minutes at the bar and after conversing with the bartender (we really hit it off) we decided the bar was going to have to be good enough for tonight (especially since the lollygaggers were still sitting at our table). Not long after we made the decision to sit at the bar a server came over, dressed like any other server, and apologized for the delay and comped our first round of drinks. We thought it odd that a server would go out of their way to make sure we were taken care of. It turns out that this server was another one of the owners. No fancy suit, no name tag or title, not putting on heirs, just wanted to make sure we were happy and apologized again for our abandoned table resi. Sorry, probably an overshare to this point but that set the tone for the most amazing evening/meal ...2 orders of filet that melted in your mouth, a swordfish dish that was incredible and probably the best halibut I have ever had. The chef found out we were from her home state, so she came out to introduce herself and share her story (totally not called for but pretty cool) we told her the food was awesome and the back story as to how she became a chef made it even more special. We ended the night with a couple anniversary creme brulee that were delicious! All in, the service, the atmosphere, the hospitality, and the food make this every bit 5 stars for us. The waitstaff are attentive and friendly, gave great recommendations and service. This was our third time coming here for the special occasion of celebrating my mom birthday. I made the reservations a little over a month ago for the 4th. Super excited to come and enjoy the views and the delicious food. I called to add my boyfriend to the reservation which was no issue at all. They do take a deposit for each person but didn't think it was a big deal as I totally get how people no show. The day of I called to move our 6pm reservation to 7:15 which they happily accommodated. They didn't see that I had added a 3rd person but she went ahead and fixed it for us. We arrived and were greeted by some wonderful folks and they even gave us the best table to celebrate my mom outside. All in all I was extremely pleased in the beginning. Then things took a turn. We were told we had to order all at once which I have never experienced before as we wanted to get drinks, the seafood tower and some other apps. But didn't complain and just placed our orders. We asked for 2 burgers and some sides. 10 or so mins or so later we were told they didn't have anymore burgers and sold 40 that day. As restaurant owners ourselves we understood and my mom ordered the chicken and we upgraded our tower to the large one and ordered some sides. Then this couple arrived which they seemed to be regulars. Getting waited on hand and foot which was fine but when they arrived our service suffered. Ordered more drinks and my boyfriend never got his. At one point he was like my wine is finally coming but it was for the couple at the table that ordered one after us. Then the women in the couple ordered a burger. We could clearly hear the order and thought for sure she would be told the same thing we had been told. But her order was taken and a burger soon came out. Maybe there was one burger left who knows but maybe that last burger could have been offered to us. It made us instantly feel as though we weren't getting the same treatment. Which isn't the best feeling when trying to celebrate my mom's birthday. Her food came out later and then our sides. The onion rings barely existed. For almost 300 dollars a beautiful start to the evening left us feeling extremely disappointed. Not to mention we brought the bill inside to pay and I wanted to order a special dessert for my mom but it seemed like everyone just wanted to go home. Sadly we won't be back. And the food is really good. My Mom had the best pork chop of her life here a couple years ago. I even hate to leave this review but it looks like other people have been experiencing similar treatment. Steamed lobster was just ok. The side of corn on the cob was laughable. Almost 3" wide and 1.5" thick. When you pay premium price you expect hearty portions of side dishes.
