I've been here for the tasting menu with my fiance and I would say it was fairly good and unique compared to most of the restaurants in the metro detroit region. The best dish in my opinion was the octopus a la plancha ! It's definitely a fun experience for people who are adventurous eaters. It's nice to have a place like this closer to home. Mabel Gray's food is always amazing and wonderful. The service is fine and the price is right. Go as often as possible.

Firstly, yes This place does live up to the hype. Seems like a cool concept that no 2 times you visit it will be the same given their menu is changing everyday with the freshest local ingredients being the center of attention their service was amazing. It;s as if they anticipated what my mind and belly were thinking. Just as I was thinking " where the...' the food will come out '...next course' the food was phenomenal. From the asian fusion appetizer with a kimchi base with grilled asparagus, the cuttlefish pasta that was perfectly chewy (and hand made with non of that fishy smell) to the tons of seafood within it with a tad bit of a crunch to play playful notes in your mouth, the heirloom bean broth (so good) with the branzino on top was the perfect mix of fat, salt and acid! The dessert which was a special type of custard with biscuit/cookies with a honey drizzle that was to die for. Me and my hubby regretted only getting one! Last but no least their alcohol menu was extensive and their cocktails were on point. I had one with some honey pollen on the rim and it was so good! Mabel Gray is a true hidden gem on the Detroit dining scene. This restaurant is located north of the downtown core in the Hazel Park neighbourhood and is known for its ever changing menu. This restaurant is extraordinarily difficult to dine at due to its popularity so make sure you get a reservation well in advance. The chef at this restaurant is a James Beard Award winning chef and the food is an illustration of his talent. The restaurant offers an 8-course set menu as well as an a la carte menu. Since we wanted to try so many of their offerings, we decided to share one eight course tasting menu and augment with a few additional dishes from the a la carte menu. I am a celiac and they were able and willing to accommodate gluten free offerings. All of the dishes were delicious but there were a few standouts from the night. We started the meal with the kimchi Apple dish with smoked pork. This offering sounded strange but was a dazzling combination of flavours. It was a duet of sweet Apple and shaved celery dressed with a spicy/tangy kimchi sauce and finished with salty cured pork. Another highlight dish were the fried yams. This dish is on the a la carte menu, however it was also an offering during our tasting. The yams were roasted and finished off in the fryer creating a soft pillowy interior with a crispy exterior. The vegetables were adorned with roasted macadamia nuts and nutritional yeast and sat atop a spicy honey sauce. It was a combination of sweet and savoury with a hint of richness from the nutritional yeast. Up next, The fried Brussel sprout dish was a favourite if my fiancé and certainly packed a punch. The jerk seasoning was super potent and the spice level was a little beyond my liking, however if you love spice this is the dish for you. For the main dishes we had the roasted boar from the tasting menu and the shrimp and grits from the a la carte. The boar was some of the most tender meat that I have ever eaten. It had a perfectly seared exterior with a succulent and tender inside. The shrimp were huge head-on gulf shrimp that had been grilled. The shrimp were ultra fresh and had the sweetness that you wish all shrimp had. Both proteins sat atop a creamy base of grits that had a cheesy background flavour. There truly were too many dishes to discuss from the evening but in all honesty everything we ate at Mabel Gray was executed to perfection. I am already looking forward to my next visit. A quick side note: we dined here during the second pandemic lock down. We sat on their heated patio which covered and mostly enclosed. We ordered the tasting menu and they not only knocked it put of the park, but also accommodated my gluten and dairy free preferences with minor tweaks that didn't leave me feeling wanting for anything. I ordered a cocktail off the drink menu (which was delicious), but my husband simply indicated what he likes and Max, the bartender, whipped up the most delicious drinks for him! After I saw Mabel gray was named Hour magazines best restaurant in Oakland county for 2023, I was excited to visit. I don't consider myself a "foodie" and after reading the reviews it felt like a cant miss dinner. Unfortunately my experience was very underwhelming. I ordered the tasting menu and wine pairing. For the price, the portion sizes seemed absurdly small and the flow from dish to dish was all over the place. My disappointment with my small entree was only intensified when the person sitting next me received a great looking steak. Next time I visit I will be ordering off of the menu. Most of the dishes I saw around the restaurant looked delicious and hearty. Although I'm disappointed, I'm excited to return. read more

This place did not live up to the hype for me, except for the dozen hipster dudes with overalls and beards longer than my hair. My sis and I sat at the bar and partook of the tasting menu with the wine pairing for $100 each. 8 'courses' with 7 pairings. 1. Seared Ahi Tuna w/ chili oil, avocado, olive oil, green apple and cilantro. Sounds great, looked pretty, but all the flavors overwhelmed the tuna. Good, but not great. Would not order it again. Pairing w/ reisling - tasted fine. 2. Pumpkin soup. the soup was spicy and delicious, but it had little apple pieces in it. They were soaked in lemon juice and sprite! They ruined the dish for me. Would be great if not for the funky apple. Pairing w/ a hard cider that smelled like a dirty dish cloth - tasted dry. Would order the soup w/o the apples again. 3. Shaved ham, poached pear, over goat cheese whip. The pear was poached in wine and LOTS of herbs of some sort. Whatever it was poached in was a little overwhelming for me. Good, but not great. Would not order it again. Pairing w/ chardonnay - tasted fine together. 4. Scallops w/ Kimchi. Uck! The scallops were spongy. I would've thought they would've seared a nice crunchy rind on them. The Kimchi was very over powering. Edible - but not good. Paired with a skinned white that smelled like dill. Tasted fine together. 5. Lamb dumpling in broth. Basic and good - but not great. Paired with a Lambrusco. Funny pairing for me. 6. Pallet cleanser of mango, ginger basil sorbet. No pairing. Very refreshing. 7. Lamb chop served over cheesy polenta and mushrooms. Lamb was over cooked and the whole dish needed salt. Good, but not great. Paired with a delicious Pinot Noir. 8. Hazelnut mousse with salted caramel. THE BOMB!!!!!!!! Thank god this meal ended with this dessert, or I probably would've given 2 stars. Paired with a caramel cognac. Super delicious!!!!!!! The food and pairings were definitively not worth $100. The place is good, but not great. Would consider going again, but would never throw down for the tasting menu again, that's for sure. read more

My wife and I treat ourselves every year at Mabel Gray to celebrate our anniversary. Mabel Gray offers a couple of ways to dine: a la cart or the chef's menu. We always choose the chef's menu, which consists of 8 courses chosen by the chef. We also opt for the wine pairing with each course. This is honestly the best way to experience Mabel Gray. The restaurant is rather small. Due to the pandemic, the seating is even more limited. Luckily Mabel Gray expanded their dining to an outdoor enclosure. This enclosure is heated so they can continue to seat patrons through the winter. The indoor seating is limited to 4 tables as well as a handful of seats at the bar. I'd recommend making reservations way ahead of time. Now on to the food. I don't consider myself as an adventurous eater, but at Mabel Gray I tend to check my inhibitions at the door. Everything that I've ever been served has been absolutely fantastic. During our last experience here, we were served some pretty epic dishes. The clam chowder was magnificent. I've never had clam chowder before, so I was a tad nervous that I wouldn't enjoy it. On the contrary, I very much enjoyed it. The broth was quite creamy and the chopped potatoes were very tender. The clams were cooked in the chowder until they opened up and filled the dish with flavor. The clams were also quite tender and delicious. I was impressed. The other dish I was really impressed with was the wild boar served over grits. The boar was aged and very tender. It didn't taste 'gamey' at all. The grits were covered in apple cider, so they essentially tasted like apple sauce. The final dish in the 8-course meal was a dark chocolate torte with candied almonds. This torte tasted like a candy bar. It was quite delightful. Each wine pairing was spot on with each dish. The staff at Mabel Gray always do a wonderful job melding these flavors together to provide your taste buds with the ultimate taste experience. I don't know what I can write that hasn't already been said. Mabel Gray was top 10 dining experiences I've ever had. It's a small venue with a bit of indoor, outdoor (with heating) and bar seating. Make sure you make reservations- they do service at set times, from what I understand. Rightfully so, since most I believe do the tasting menu and they'd want to keep cadence with what everyone's having. And boy does that cadence work- dishes were cleaned up and reset for the next course sometimes without us noticing- the service was just that good. Very nice folks who know what they are serving and are able to answer questions. The food is fresh and new almost every day and the selections we had were divine. Oooooo Nelly!! So good. We went here for our birthdays and we had the: Oysters: so good. They used fish sauce Kim chi garnish and it tasted just like Vietnam. This was the best thing I tasted in a long time. Watermelon salad: absolutely no seeds. None. Not even the ones you can eat. If they took out all the seeds by hand, well that's dedication. Pickled salad: a bit sour for my taste. But that's ok Seafood dumplings: the mix is a shrimp /fish paste. The broth is not pho like the waiter describes, but more of a bun Bo hue broth. So good I slurped all the broth out of the bowl. Cheese and pepper noodles: damn. The waiter said it was like an adult Mac and cheese, and damn. It was so Fucking good. Holy crap. A culinary experience unlike any other we have experienced. My wife and I have been here 4 times now and I have been saving my review to be fair. We have sat at the bar and have sat at the tables but have not been seated outside yet. I think it may be for private parties. We prefer the bar for the 2 of us but any more would require a table. As for the food and drink. They change up the menu every week so it has been difficult to enjoy the same thing twice. Reading the menu our first time, we were not really interested in anything but knew it had to be good based on the reviews and difficulty in getting a table. Walking in would be next to impossible. The dishes on the menu are going to be prepared unlike anything you would get in most other restaurants. I was not excited my first time as I did not think I was going to like anything on the menu as I needed to look up half of what they were preparing. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised at each dish we sampled. Dishes are big enough to share and we usually get a bread, salad, side and main. This allows us to try more things per our preference. They offer a tasting menu and drink pairing menu but we have not been daring enough to try it yet. In due time we will. Having been here 4 times now and never being dissatisfied I am completely fine with reserving one month in advance and paying for a reserved seat. As for the craft cocktails there is always a few rotating drinks on the menu that I always am sure to try. Very good selection of unique cocktails as well as being able to make the classics. Wine & beer are also available. You may think some of the menu items are pricy for the portion size but you truly get what you pay for here. This is a hidden gem and I cannot wait to go back. I reveled in one of the BEST meal experiences i have had in metro-Detroit in recent years HERE at Mabel Gray this month! Reservations are a must (think weeks in advance) as this place is very small. Because we wanted to enjoy the craft cocktail menu and wine, we reserved the recommended little Airbnb space about a mile away, which was a delight in and of itself! Parking is onsite, and free. We scored seats in the dining room, and there were plenty of spaces still to be filled when we arrived at the start of dinner hour. The beverages were well, wonderful.... I recommend the Griddled sourdough toast with chicken liver and chestnut mousse appetizer. It went so well with red wine! The Tuna Crudo was light, flavorful and the crushed pistachio added a lovely texture variant to the dish. The broth created for the bowl full of Mussels ala Normandy was so tasty i almost asked to take the remainder home! The Hand-rolled ravioli entree with garlic filling and topped with spicy lobster vodka sauce was served al dente and it was pure bliss! Finally got to visit this spot & it wasn't everything I was hoping. Some of the dishes is better than others. The service is amazing & they keep social distancing between people well. We sat in the patio & that was heated & covered. We were worried it would be too cold, but it wasn't at all. The hazel park cocktail is fantastic if you like that sweeter cocktail. As for the food, we both loved the prosciutto & bread, & shrimp (we got 4) We also tried the two types of oysters, baked & raw, both were just okay for us. I did like a little flavoring for the raw oysters. I thought the pasta was a bit sour, was a little weird for me, so that didn't fit my palette. Probably the least favorite thing. I was so excited to finally try Mabel Grey and it lived up to almost all of my expectations. My boyfriend and I went for early dinner on a Saturday night. We were there by 4pm when they opened to insure we had a spot at the bar, bc the tables were all booked with reservations for the evening. We started with potato and mustard greens soup, it was awesome!!!! Then we shared the toast, which was unusual, not bad but an unusual combination of flavors. Next was the Hamchi crudo, omg it was the star of the show! Perfect balance if flavor. Then the philly steak and cheese actual had liquid nacho cheese. The dessert also was a odd mix of flavors. Best restaurant experience we've had since we moved to Michigan in 2016. By far. We did the tasting menu with wine pairing for my wife's birthday and were so pleased at the quality of the food. It was exquisite! Our tasting menu included: oysters two ways, Michigan apple salad with ricotta, crispy octopus salad with salsa verde and confit potato, clam chowder, sous vide wagyu short rib, fried tallegio with nuts and fruit, and a blondie with caramel sauce. The wine and drink pairings were perfect with the exception of a Shiraz from Italy which we were initially excited about but neither of us liked very much. The paired Champagne, white Wines, mango margarita, and a bourbon spiked cider were otherwise lovely and were perfect matches. Ok...I hate to do this because I know this place is near and dear to every metro-detroit foodie's heart, but I need to give my honest review. The first time i went to Mabel gray was in May 2021 and it was great. We had a Bibb salad and their wagyu burger which were both good. In fact I still think about that Bibb salad with coconut green goddess! But, my friend and I decided to come back October 2021 for the tasting menu. Of course, knowing this place, we made a reservation about a month in advance. Closer to the date, mable gray's Instagram said it was Italian themed week, which we weren't too thrilled about because Italian isn't our thing, but we knew they could still knock our socks off with the food, so we didn't reschedule. In order: bean salad, minestrone, trumpet mushroom, scallop with polenta, lobster ravioli, palette cleanser, veal, olive oil cake. The bean salad was cannellini beans with Italian dressing, and a lot of Parmesan, underwhelming. The minestrone was lukewarm and had a weird flavor. The mushrooms were good, just a lot of butter. The scallop was cooked great. The lobster ravioli was nothing special. By the time the veal came we were stuffed, but a bite of it was all we needed because it was very rich. The olive oil cake just tasted like sponge cake with olive oil. Overall, paying 95 dollars for a tasting menu I expect to be wowed. Only a couple dishes I actually enjoyed, and I probably wouldn't order any of them again. I'm also disappointed at how the bartender treated us (we had a bar reservation). At first he was accommodating to our request of not having oysters as the first course because I have a big distaste for them, but throughout the meal he became slightly more rude. Im just disappointed because I know the potential of this restaurant and Im sad to say I will probably not return, even being the big foodie I am. read more

On Oct 19th 2021 my wife and I celebrated another wedding anniversary by going out to one of the top rated restaurants in the area. We both have heard so much about the food , chef and menu but with COVID it was hard to get a reservation . But we got the reservation this year and were thrilled to finally get a chance to experience the cuisine on our 30th wedding anniversary . My only regret not taking my normal amount of pictures . To start the mixologist behind the bar did perfect job on my Gin Aviation and was an outstanding waiter . You wouldn't believe how many places around don't carry Creme De Violet to make this drink or don't know how to make the drink correctly .. cmon ! Both of our meals were very tasty and appetizers were just ok but the baked Alaska was killer , my compliments to our waiter for making the suggestion. The one thing I didn't like is we constantly felt rushed to eat because the next reservation was right behind our allotted dinning time. To be blunt when I am paying for a top rated restaurant and top chef and service please don't make me feel like I am on the clock. Nope won't go back.. why because dinning is an experience at top rated restaurants and food and the ambiance needs to be enjoyed not rushed like a fast food joint . If that's the case find a bigger place, you see you don't rush a good thing . Went again last night for Vegan Month and it was a solid 10/10 - it's also the only time I can do tasting menu since I don't eat meat, which is a huge bummer because the flow of the meal with a tasting menu changes everything. I'm not sure why these folks haven't earned a Michelin Star yet but, when they do, it'll be very, very well-deserved. The menu last night built a beautiful flavor story over about an hour-and-a-half of perfectly-timed service, staff is knowledgeable beyond words, and this goes without saying, but the texture/flavor/flow was nuts. Came for the vegan tasting menu ($65/p - with tax & tip its $80/p). Wine pairing is $30 extra per person. I have never spent so much $$ per person for a dinner & I have to say that this was WORTH it! Every course was fantastic. I would give this place a solid 4.5 stars. The reason for the 0.5 points off was due to our reservation being at 915pm. We were not seated until 1020pm and not served until 1030pm. This was very disappointing and not communicated properly that our appt time would be pushed so far back. Esp after making this reservation with a credit card 2 months prior. This by far was the most irritating part of the evening. Please be cautious about this - esp if its a very busy night. From there... everything improved. The inside is very small & intimate with both bar seating and regular tables. Bathrooms in the back. Plenty of parking in the lot or plenty of street parking as well. The vegan dishes started OK and got better and better with each course! Mabel Gray is my new favorite restaurant in Detroit. It took us a few attempts to get a reservation time that works for us, but it was worth it. I appreciate that cozy space in a nondescript part of town. The service was prompt and very nice. The staff honestly made it easy to have a very enjoyable time. The menu is not expansive (which I love!), which made us want to try EVERYTHING. But, you know, gluttony and money. We still ordered a ton of food, but without regret! Parsnip soup - I've never had parsnip soup but it was good! Bread and zatar - My favorite dish. Crispy and soft bread with a delicious creamy sauce. Bay scallop yakitori - I liked the scallops but didn't come together for me. Duck egg roll - Crispy with a great dipping sauce. Ravioli - Probably my least favorite dish. Pasta was a bit dense. My wife, my son and myself went out for a celebration dinner. 2 of of us got the Tasting Menu with Wine Pairing (highly recommended) and my wife had a gluten free dinner (they were very accommodating). I had been wanting to try out Mabel Grey for a while now, probably years, and I was reminded of it last week, when we went to its (former?) sister restaurant, The Root. I was browsing OpenTable just for fun and I saw they had a 5pm reservation open for this Friday - practically unheard of - so I grabbed it. The restaurant lives up to its reputation. Our server was Marc Anthony, who seems to be a bit Yelp-famous (others on here have mentioned him before), and he was great. In between each course, there was a busboy and also another waitress who would clean our table for us, and I've never had such prompt water service before, either - water is served in these unique wine bottles, which stay on the table, but you'll almost never have to serve it yourself, as the waitservice was on top of it. Now for the food! We did not do the tasting menu, as $65/pp was a bit out of our budget, but we did enjoy 5-6 (5 for me, 6 for him) courses of delicious food. 1: Oysters - for him, as I don't eat seafood. Direct from Massachusetts, with some sort of spicy jalapeno aioli on top. 2: Elote - this was the only course I didn't really like, as I'm a huge fan of Imperial's elote. This had too much mayo on it. 3: Brussels sprouts - delicious but SPICY, and my mouth was on fire afterwards, so I was glad I had later ordered the drink special of the day, the tiki drink ($15), because the rum or something in it helped calm my mouth down. 4: Fried zucchini - one of my favorite dishes we tried. It had some sort of "Italian salsa" on it, too, as they called it, with chopped up tomatoes and some sort of spices. 5: Arrabbiata with mushrooms - mushrooms were sourced from Detroit Mushroom Co. nearby. I like mushrooms a lot so I liked this dish, too. 6: Wagyu beef empanadas, with egg + olive filling - I was a little apprehensive about this one because I dislike both eggs and olives, but it was actually pretty delicious, and it was served on top of a thin chimichurri sauce. We originally were not planning on ordering drinks, to save some money, but my boyfriend ended up getting a manhattan ($13) and I ordered the special of the day, the Tiki drink with two types of rum ($15), I believe, and both were really good. Dessert menu also looked good but I wanted to try out Doug's Delight, down the street, so we passed on that. One small tiny pet peeve thing: it's 2019, please put the bill in the middle of the table. My boyfriend and I were splitting the bill, and it was put directly in front of him ... I've noticed this seems to be the case at most restaurants. This especially annoys me if I am the one treating, and it gets put in front of him; it's assumed that he is the one paying. Overall I would give the food like 4.5/5 stars, and the service was like 6/5 stars, so my average is 5/5. I would definitely return, as well, but probably if I was celebrating something ... although the food is great, it's a bit pricey, although you do get what you pay for. read more

Every single day it's different along with the menu . It was 8 different courses and I know it sounds like a lot but it's very small bites . The service and presentation was excellent . The only reason why I gave 4 stars vs 5 is because for $65 and the amount of Food provided , I felt very shortchanged . I wasn't full and the highest quality piece of food received was a duck breast. The scallops were bay and not large sea scallops. I'll def go back but next time I would order off the regular menu. Where you are spending your next special occasion! This has been hands down the best meal we have ever had. They have two options, tasting menu with a drink pairing or a la carte. We have done both and you will literally not make a bad decision choosing either. The chef has received multiple James Beard awards and the menu is ALWAYS changing. I would have more pictures but I took one bite and forgot about to! We had oysters, chilled broccoli, soup, fish, steak and truffle fries. The drinks are also hands down the best in the area. Please give them your business, you will not be disappointed. Reservations fill up very quickly, they are open and fill up 30 days in advance so plan ahead. Came here for milestone anniversary, did not disappoint. If Michelin rated restaurants in this area, it'd be a solid 1 star in my opinion - quality cuisine, top notch service, A+ experience, food I can understand with my Food-TV slightly-educated palette, not impossible to get a seat. This was one of the best meals in recent memory. We came with a whole bunch of food restrictions due to allergy and other, and they were able to accommodate. I loved the passion from the servers about food and ability to describe the dishes and exude energy despite their long day (and the fact that the menu changes every day!). We did the Chef's surprise, which meant a 7 course tasting menu the day we went. Everything was very clever and meticulously plated. Wasn't a huge fan of the first dish (despite knowing Sichuan peppercorns in the cuisuine well enough), but everything else was a solid hit. Amazing beer cheese soup, delicious squid ink noodles (my wife had, not pictured). The lamb sausage was a clever play on Middle Eastern grape leaves complete with the "hummus" yogurt, and boy was it amazing! It was almost as good as the ridiculous bison dish. I've never had such tender juicy meat - awesome spice rub. But the real winner was the pastry chef's chocolate tart.. it is hard to describe how delicious the combination of ingredients. I almost wanted to ask if we could buy a tart to go but of course she doesn't have time for that! Definitely coming back. Oh and getting a table - reservations are pushed out pretty far, but they let us in for a walk-in. Bar seats are only used for walk-ins. But they only have 13. After meeting James in Cancun, I decided that I had to go to Mabel Grey if I ever made it to Detroit. Such a great choice. One of the best meals I've ever had in my life. It's hard to comprehend how every course can be better than the last. The staff was also excellent, high quality good with a down to earth atmosphere that is never pretentious. It also happened to be vegan month. I'm not vegan but I would encourage everyone to not shy away from Vegan month. read more

A couple of weeks ago was our first time going here for my husband's birthday. Excellent menu options. Service was top notch. We ordered appetizers to share among four of us. Food so good we ordered two of our dinner selections for takeout! Our reservation was at 4 pm. Even then it was a bit noisy sitting inside. Overall we'll definitely be back! read more
