Oh, Mabel Gray. I'd been wanting to come here for years, but it just never worked out. My boyfriend remembered that it was on my bucket list, so he was able to make a reservation for my birthday (likely because it was on a weekday in February). We had seats at the bar, which was great, because we felt like we got the best and most attentive service. Every single staff member was so kind, gracious, and knowledgeable. We could tell each person was dedicated to making sure we had a great experience. There was no pretension here, which we absolutely appreciated. The decor was so much fun, and I loved that they had their own candles in the bathroom! We decided to go with the tasting menu after we checked with staff and they assured us that they could make modifications so that my dishes would be gluten free. I loved every single dish, and especially my toffee pudding with brûlée bananas (it reminded me of banoffee from an Irish pub). My bookclub drove across the state to see what all the hoopla was about. It was well worth the drive, from the first encounter with the Hostess to the waitress.. we were treated like royalty. Best oysters ever!!! Did the tasting menu and it's slightly different than the menu they present You start with oysters end with dessert. I believe 6 entrees total. I am typically a picky eater but they have opened my taste buds to so much. I always tell people sometimes it's not about liking something it's about the preparation depending how it's made can be a hit or miss even with your fav food. This place was obviously all hits for me I also got the beverage paring, my partner didn't but between the 2 of us there was plenty to go around and he also got his own drink or 2 Atmosphere is small and it's for the best. It allows the staff to have more of a personal experience with each guest If you choose to do the regular menu everything is portioned to feed 2 or more people so keep that in mind The only thing I'd be weary of and it's super silly is the chairs have wicker backs so if you are worried about your dress or certain fabric sticking fight for the booth or put a jacket over it (told you it was silly) Everything was amazing over all 20/10 we plan to bring our friends here when they come in to town the best part is the menu changes every 2 weeks, so you really don't know what you're getting yourself into which makes it so much more fun read more

The experience of dining with Mabel Gray was an unforgettable end-cap to 2024. The inside of the restaurant was warm and inviting, clean and creatively decorated. Every aspect of the dinner was carefully planned and executed to perfection. From the hand written menus to the individual pieces of vintage tableware for each dish, I was endlessly entertained by the care and thoughtfulness displayed. My husband and I were sat at the bar for a tasting menu and beverage pairing, and watching the staff buzz around so calmly and professionally was wonderful. Every server and bartender was knowledgeable about the food and the drinks they were serving, and always ensured our experience was seamless and enjoyable. With an ever-changing menu, each tasting experience is inspired and fresh. The night's selection of dishes for us included two types of oysters, one of which was pleasantly briny and sweet, while the other was baked. I was impressed by the amount of seafood and variety of ingredients. We also received a linguini and clam sauce dish and hamachi with grapefruit that were both delicious. The lamb main with mushroom crudo was stunning, cooked perfectly. The amount of food and drink for the price is excellent, and I can't wait to come back and experience more of chef Rigato and his team's creations. Both the service and the food were top notch, each dish better than the last and left me wanting more. Wow! I've been living a few blocks over for years and haven't come yet (I know, I know), but my bf surprised me for our anniversary! Everything I had was absolutely amazing. I really wanted to love Mabel gray but I was underwhelmed. I don't like spicy food and most of the tasting menu last week was spicy so I didn't make sense for me to do that, although I think that is recommended. There are no substitutions fyi. (The menu changes from time to time.) They have a private parking lot and you have to make reservations, they open a month out and it seems pretty competitive. The garlic rolls were made on Hawaiin rolls and had lots of butter with some herbs- they were good. We also got a salad, some sweet potato fries and a Waygu steak. Those things were all good but not great- which I would expect for the prices here. I didn't like the lasagna at all (off menu). It was made with wild game and I found it to be too dry. There was some salsa verde on top and I did not enjoy that modification from the classic. The server was very informative, friendly and attentive. The restaurant is fairly small but they have some seating on the covered/heated patio. read more

I don't know what all the fuss is about this place. Overpriced and not that great. I ordered the fish which was paired with potato chips. Seriously? If you're someone who orders fish chances are you'd rather that it be paired with a vegetable or a risotto or rice or something. You're not wanting chips. Started with bok choy appetizer- extremely tasty with many different types of firmness and flavors. Next we had the house bread and cauliflower/cheddar cheese soup. The bread is superb, it's a bit like naan but upgraded. The soup itself has a beautiful texture that is both creamy and pulpy. It's the creative toppings that push it over. Epic. What came out next was the crab dumplings. We imagined a thick creamy sauce, no, it's a balanced broth full of radishes and jalapeños. For the finale we opted for the Italian chocolate cake! My partner and I came here right after getting engaged and it was the perfect place to celebrate. He had made a reservation in advance and we got there right when it opened at 4. The staff was incredibly friendly, immediately congratulated us on our engagement, greeted us with complementary champagne, and asked about any allergies. It was so nice! The ambiance was perfect for the occasion -- eclectic, cozy, and welcoming. We opted to get our dishes ala carte rather than prix fixe, but they offer both options. We started with the island creek oysters, then had soup, king crab dumplings, squid ink pasta, and cheesecake for dessert (which was seriously the best cheesecake I've ever had!) Each dish was brought out separately and the servers fully explained what was in each one. I enjoyed both experiences (sitting at a table and at the bar), Mabel Grey has got to be my favorite restaurant!! I think sitting at a table is more intimate so you can chat with your company whereas the bar is more getting to know the staff and a little more casual. I LOVE Mabel Grey!! Had an amazing experience at Mabel Gray! We were celebrating a birthday, and the staff was extremely helpful, accommodating and friendly. Each staff member was so well informed with the menu (I think a different individual brought a different dish out every time, all super friendly and explained what dish we were being served) and they had great recommendations for how many dishes we should order based on our group size and what drinks paired great or were menu favorites. The environment was lively but intimate (we sat on the kitchen/bar side, I do know they have an additional larger dining area now) but it was great being so close to all the magic. As a group of four with healthy appetites, we ordered six different dishes: Apple carpaccio, Szechuan Napa cabbage, crispy fried Spanish octopus, island creek oysters, pasta and the whole fish. I could write an entire other post about the food, but really all you need to know is HOW DARE THEY CREATE SUCH DELICIOUS DISHES. Can't wait to be back, especially to try the burger. Everything about Mabel Grey was fantastic! We've been trying to get reservations for a while, so we were glad to take the 4:30pm reservation spot when it came available! We were pleasantly greeted at the door and shown to our table 5 mins before our reset time. We were greeted by a hostess who welcomed us, answered questions, explained food--she knew that menu inside and out! My bff and I each got the tasting menu ($89/person, eight courses), the others in our party had soup and Hawaiian rolls, and lamb chops. The tasting menu wasn't only ridiculously delicious, but also was such a fun experience--the staff explained what the food was when each course was delivered. Every course was so thoughtfully prepared and had flavors I never would have thought to pair together. So good. I would order the tasting menu again, and can't wait to go back with my husband!! I wish I'd written down what each item was, but the pictures at least show how gorgeous the food is. Couple of things to know: reservations book fast, so plan ahead. They do have a few bar seats open for the taking, but those fill fast too. They will accommodate for larger group reservations, but you have to call over a month out for that size group. I took my daughter along with her fiance for her birthday dinner. I am from out of town and they are local. They both heard outstanding things about this restaurant so we all decided on the tasting menu with pairing. I would say we were a bit disappointed in both the food and the pairings. There was nothing particularly exceptional about either and for the price i was expecting more. Please know they automatically add 20% tip on the tasting menu regardless of party size. We would give it a 6/10 and do not expect to go back even when i am in town. read more

The atmosphere and service were great! The servers are very knowledgeable and ready to help as soon as you need them. There is very little waiting for service. The restaurant has very nice decore and makes you feel welcomed. The mismatched plates and cups feel nice and whimsical. The oysters were a huge hit, delicious, especially with the toppings that were added. The caprese had some of the best mozzarella I've had and was such a great way to start the meal. It was so fresh and dressed so well. Absolutely loved this. The lamb ribs were amazing. The sauces they were served with complimented them so well, and they were cooked to perfection. The clams were very nice as well, delicious, but the beans felt slightly out of place. The halibut was nice, but it felt like it was lacking flavor, almost like a second thought on the menu, but still good. Absolutely unreal from the minute we walked in and until the very end. It's been my opinion that not everyone wants to invest in an official Michelin star, but let me clarify, their service, food, & ambiance perform as if they have three stars. Now let's dig in to the yummiest part - every bite of food! Dined here with three others on a Saturday night. We were able to snag an 8:30 reservation the night before which worked out perfectly. Parking is easy with a lot next to their building and plenty of space on the streets (where we had to park). Natalie was our server and she was exceptional! The entire staff gives off a family energy and they very clearly work hard as a team. With an open view to the kitchen, you can tell the communication is clear and everyone seemed happy (of course this view is surface level only). Three of us ordered the tasting menu and my husband ordered the Cast Iron King Crab Legs as his entree. The tasting menu comes with eight courses, with one being a bite sized palate cleanser. Am I bummed that it's counted towards the courses, yes. Do I wish I could order a tub of it and eat it nightly, also hell yes. Even with the other seven courses, it was still well worth the $89. We also added the Gem Salad, Nonnas Meatballs, and extra oysters for the table. The only food I didn't take a picture of was the salad and palate cleanser. Baby Gem Salad $16 - absolutely unreal. Probably my favorite dish because of the tart and nutty flavors and being doused in sherry dijon vinaigrette. I'm determined to remake it since I live so far away and believe an addiction has been created. It's huge and plenty for a party of four - or just yourself if you're anything like me. King Crab Legs $100 was a very healthy portion as well. Loved the hush puppies with a slight kick, soft center, and perfectly crunchy exterior. Easy to "peel" and eat so leave the bib at home. Nonna's Meatballs $7 per meatball. Loved the Sunday sauce and it was a hearty meatball with a kick - just the way I like 'em. TASTING MENU $89 3/9/24 - Radish carpaccio was delicious and so very flavorful. - Chicken and duck liver mousse toast was everyone's top choice and my second (because I loved the salad so much). But you can eff me right up with a pate that has such a creamy and smooth finish like theirs. SO DAMN GOOD. - Seafood dumplings came with two and a beautiful light broth with the ever slightest kick from jalapeño. They also had a sweet corn that knocked my socks off. The sweet & spicy was the perfect compliment and the dumplings were fluffy and filled with flavor. - Palate cleanser was a ginger blackberry sorbet I believe. I couldn't help but take it in one bite haha. So refreshingly delicious. Wonder if they'll start selling by the pint... - Braised short rib and polenta was very comforting. With short rib almost falling apart. Just so tender and juicy. It complemented the perfectly cooked brussel sprouts that were an added surprise. - Octopus kebab was probably my least favorite but still very good. I found it to be way too tough to chew and that you really had to chew it. Loved the tzatziki it was paired with and was sure to add veggies and mint to every bite. - Raw and baked oysters were also served as a course and we wish we ordered a dozen more! The group was hesitant about baked oysters over raw but they turned out to be the favorite overall. - Olive oil cake and lemon finished off the tasting perfectly. It was light and refreshing with every flavor standing out. My husband who's not a fan of lemon even loved it. Natalie was also so kind to treat us to the dark chocolate cheesecake after such a special dinner together and even though we were well over the edge, we indulged and there was not one regret! This is one of my favorite restaurants. We like to book it for my birthday, especially since I am vegetarian and August is always vegan month, it's a perfect choice. We sampled the tasting menu, which I enjoy ordering as it allows me to try things I wouldn't usually order. Even if something isn't a food I generally like, everything here is so well done that it's always enjoyable. My favorite dishes from the tasting menu were the Avocado Toast, Cast Iron MI Zucchini, Chilled MI Sweet Corn Soup, and of course dessert, which was Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie. To go with the tasting menu, I also ordered the NA beverage flight. The drinks were very well-paired to the food, and really enhanced the experience. Would highly recommend ordering this with your food. My favorite pairings were the watermelon soda with the Fried Jerk Brussel Sprouts and the NA red wine with the Mushroom Gyozar. The service is always phenomenal here. The staff is very knowledgeable about every food item, even the small details. We also had a personal situation resulting in needing to make changes to our reservation and the staff was accommodating. Additionally, since it was my birthday, dessert was served with a candle, which is a thoughtful touch. We sat in the banquette seating near the bar. It was cozy with ambient lighting. Celebrated our Wedding Anniversary last week at Mabel Gray. It was our first visit and they did not disappoint! We were seated in the Champagne Cave, what an awesome room that is! We both had the tasting menu and the food was so good--dishes I may not have chosen and they were all delicious. I love hearing the presentation of each course and how it is prepared. This was a bit of a drive from downtown, but I had read about Chef Rigato and his network of local farms and butchers. Mabel Gray is an authentic Michigan farm to table experience with a focus on in season fare. Started with a hamachi crudo and it was so light and fresh. The grapefruit really balanced with the fish. The oysters are definitely amazing compared to what is available down south. Whatever the lemon ice was on those Massachusetts oysters was incredible. My kids and I ordered two rounds of those. The steak was served french style sliced with a side of frites and bearnaise. It could easily feed two or three served family style. The poached lobster was so light and buttery. The slab of garlic bread went really well with the steak. The overall vibe is industrial meets cozy with dim lighting. First off, if you want to come here, think WAY ahead. I've never hit the timing right and just recently took a 4:30 reservation because it was what was available. Oddly, it was already packed and I didn't know they were open earlier than that. Parked next door as the lot was already full- don't worry- did not get a ticket. Walked in and my companion was already there. I joined them. To say the restaurant is cozy is an understatement. The vibe is eclectic- kind of your gmas mismatched dishes and glassware along with an industrial vibe up above. We opted for the tasting menu and began to get full midway through. The oysters with miso and panko were delightful. The fish and verde was so refreshing and light. I was going dairy light so I got a hearty salad and my friend got the clam chowder. Both very good. Palate cleanser was perfect prior to lamb and the waygu beef potsticker in a curry sauce. I wish I had been able to eat the tres leche cake and was coated in milk. Unpopular opinion here, I know, but I have to say this place was not worth the hype, cost of meal, amount of food, and difficulty getting the reservation. I went here with my fiancé as a belated birthday meal, and have been wanting to try if for the past 1.5 years since we moved here; however, I feel it fell short of my expectations. Was the food interesting and unique? Yes Have I tasted much tastier food for the price? Definitely yes Was the service and presentations top nouch? Yes Would I go back again? Probably not, it was a good experience overall but I think is much better food options in the metro Detroit area and downtown area that I would rather go to. For the record, we did try one entire tasting menu (8 mini courses) which included oysters, mushroom soup, a charcuterie situation, apple salad, fried cauliflower dish, etc. Also got an additional entrée on the side. The only item that I really did find was amazing was the lamb chop with special salsa on top! Like I said, food was really interesting and good, but for paying $200 for the whole thing including 2 cocktails, 1 tasting menu, and 1 entrée, I expected more quantity of food. However, I will say the cocktails, especially the G&T were incredible and would highly recommend. read more

This was eyes-rolled-back-in-your-head good. It took months to get a reservation for 6:00 pm. The 4:00 and 8:00 options are easier to come by. When you make a reservation, you need to put a $25 deposit per person. It'll go towards your meal but it's to prevent no-shows. We each ordered the tasting menu - 8 courses. Each course was perfectly timed. Each course was very unique and the portions were reasonable. The place isn't very big but it looks like they are expanding! The menu changes every Tuesday. I had dinner at Mabel Gray for the first time recently. The food was good and the reason that I am giving a three star review is because of the service. I understand that the restaurant is not a large one and there may be a time constraint for each reservation however, that should be made clear right from the beginning. My friend and I ordered a salad and entrées and the server kept coming back within minutes of us receiving our dishes and asking if she could box the rest of it up for us. I mean I literally food in my hand and she was asking if she could box it up. It wasn't like she did this once or twice it was more like 4 or 5 times within minutes. It was just a very very odd experience. I've been to restaurants before that have had a time constraint attached to a reservation which I have no problem with. Wait staff should not be coming up while you are physically eating and rushing you when you're eating at a reasonable pace. When I finally asked if there was an issue she said "there's a table behind you so we need to speed things up". Not a great experience. read more

Out of the 8 courses I would say 2 were great and the rest were trendy plates that cater to the popular culinary culture of the area.
