I've looked forward to checking out Mabel since a friend first directed me to their site. I love the idea of such a community-centric business, especially one that subsidizes the rent and renovation of existing housing stock for affordable housing units. Husband and I stopped by Mabel just a few days after they opened. I was impressed by the space and decor- it's airy and comfortable, though fairly small. The baristas were super friendly, and one joked with us as she poked through the record collection. I'm not sure why a cafe has a "How to learn Finnish" record, but it made for a good laugh. We ordered a latte, bullet coffee (one of their specialties), bagel and cream cheese, and a cream scone. This was my first bullet coffee and it was well made and a good experience. The scone was more like a biscuit, and was tasty once I stopped expecting a scone. I'd give the food and drinks a 7/10- really good, but not the best the city has to offer. I think their "Retail Visioning Park" will make a cool community/rental space. When I walked through it on Day 3 it wasn't quite ready, but the layout and lighting looked promising. Mabel is already on my short list of favorite coffee shops. Drinks and pastries are good, the cafe is comfortable, and most importantly the business is committed to giving back to the community. Sweet little coffee shop. Some pastry selections from Macrina and simple drinks. You don't find 20 syrup flavors here, just a good cup of Joe. Beans were expensive at $16-$17 for a 1/2 pound so we skipped buying any. Lots of quiet seating and a room with children's books. Wish the bathroom had a changing table (there is room for one). The coffee is completely over hyped. I got what was recommended which was the bullet proof coffee with butter and the taste was bland and tasted too much like butter. The pricing for this place is completely outrageous too for what you're getting. The portions are small but that might be a good thing considering how awful the coffee was. STAY AWAY!!! read more

The train shop is gone??? Who saw that coming? My data set is small (one visit), but they didn't scare me away with horrible service or crappy coffee. I had a doubletallnonfatlatte and a cookie. I don't know if the cookie was some kind of gluten-free abomination, but it smeck goot. The coffee was a little bland for my taste. I like a dark robust coffee - I think it's called "espresso roast". While not crappy, the coffee was lacking in character and artistry. Easy parking, unlike at Java Bean, and that may be what keeps these guys afloat. This is a classic example of not judging a book by its cover (ie weird looking espresso logo). This place is super passionate about what it is serving! This is a great coffee shop. The staff is nice, the choices are standard (nothing *too* impressive but it hits the spot usually), and there's parking. I wanted to give them 5 stars but I couldn't due to how overpriced some of their stuff is. The cold brew, a 16oz cup, is $5...I've worked in the Seattle coffee industry since 2012 and know how it's made, and also know how much it costs. I've never paid more than $4 for a large. It's just excessive and weird for a place to charge $5 for a drink like this. Still gonna go there every now and then, everything else about the place is wonderful! read more

Mabel is the only place in Seattle I could find that serves bulletproof coffee and it is great!! The only thing I didn't like is that while you're waiting for coffee you basically have to stand at someone's table because there's not really a waiting area if you're getting coffee to go. Just stopped in on my way out of town and decided to try this little cafe out. The staff are incredibly nice and polite, which if this is your first stop in the morning it's delightful. I had the bulletproof coffee which I added sweetener to. It's very rich, so if you have a sensitive stomach I wouldn't recommend. It's made with butter so it Might also fill you up. I also got the bacon cheddar scone and had it heated up. Allann Brothers coffee company has this type of scone but it would be really good with a side of butter or sour cream. I do love the decor and how it shouts "travel! Live your life! Explore!" But that's because I'm currently in that state of mind and have just completed 5 states and one other country in the span of less than two months. This will be my new spot when I come back to Seattle. I missed out on the quiche but maybe they might have more food choices (hint hint). read more

Love this little gem. Friendly staff and an assortment of delicious snacks and drinks. The avocado toast is a must try. Excellent fruit smoothies (or ask about their "peanut butter cup" drink, it is perfect if you are craving something sweet but not terrible for you; similar to a frappuchino but much healthier). Lots of space to hang out if you have time (games and lounge seating in the back, laptop tables in the front area with free wifi). Definitely a favorite! read more

Good coffee, lackluster service. One staff was friendly while her coworker (barista) was unwelcoming, and frankly rude when order was placed. I don't expect rainbows and bubbly chatter when grabbing a quick iced coffee, but the barista was dismissive about my order, and unhelpful when asked about cold fare. Any place that runs out of cold brew at 12 noon should probably rethink their supply, lest locals choose Starbucks instead. Tipped for the cashier. read more

With Mabel just around the corner, it should be our go-to, but instead we find ourselves seeking out alternatives that are out of our way just to avoid Mabel. They continually under-impress, whether it's not having decaf coffee, regular coffee for purchase, closing at inconvenient times, surprisingly under-trained staff, and long wait times when there is no line.
