We moved to Oakley almost a month ago and we were surprised to see a Filipino store in Brentwood. We thought we had to drive down to Pittsburgh to get to the nearest Filipino store. The place is not that big compared to the well-known stores. It's just a small mom-and-pop store like a sari-sari store. However, it has several items that you might need for your kitchen and other Filipino items. My wife wanted to make halo halo and we found the items to make it. We also bought a Magnolia Ube ice cream. They also have several cooked Filipino foods. We didn't buy one but I was browsing around the store and the food looks good. We might try them once we come back. I also noticed frozen items like lumpia, purefood hotdogs, tapa, longaniza, etc. I was surprised to see several items that they sell in a small store. We don't have to drive far just to fill up on our cooking essentials, snacks, and other Filipino items you see from a big-name store. We were able to talk to the owner and she was very sweet and nice. The service was excellent and they asked us what we needed. Threw my son a surprise 21st birthday. Menu was one of the first things I locked in...Boodle Fight aka kamayan. Since we were hosting it out of my bffs house in Antioch I needed to find a place that offered what I needed. I wasn't going to have time to taste several spots, so the photos and reviews on Yelp were going to need to come in clutch. I called on Thursday and was able to make my order over the phone. The party was Saturaday. I ordered the following: 1. 50 veggie lumpias 2. Large tray of menudo 3. Large tray of rice 4. Large tray of pancit bihon 5. 2 fried tilapia 6. Large tray of chicken afritada 7. Small tray of pinkabet 8. Small tray of chop suey I then went in a few hours after making my order over the phone because I needed to confirm the sizes of the trays to see if I needed to increase my order. I was pleased with the portion sizes. We even left with a halo halo. The halo halo did the trick bit was missing more beans, coconut strips, pieces of Leche flan and a sprinkle of pinipig. Although, maybe I'm used to the elevated Halo Halo's. The place is a store/catering kitchen. Although they do have a small buffet of already cooked food you can choose from if you just want a plate of stuff. Think Goldilocks. They also have a frozen food section with frozen staples as well as frozen lumpias you can take home to cook. I went on Saturday at 11 and my order was ready. The chipper gentleman at the counter who greeted me even helped wheel out all the trays on a cart and helped load them in the car. He even gave specific warnings of which trays we needed to ensure we didn't tilt as it had sauce that would definitely drip. The warning was very much appreciated. All the food was delicious. No complaints from either myself or guests. It was all fresh. Flavors were on point. My only not even complaint just it was different that the menudo was not diced as I'm used to. The flavor profile of the menudo was on point, I'm just used to a dish wherein all the ingredients are bite sized so you get the perfect bite with each spoonful. It's actually insane when I think about it, that I've been coming here for so long and the food has always stayed the same - with a delicious taste. I usually get Sinigang and I don't live in the area, so me being willing to drive out there to go get their sinigang should tell you how good it is. They also have amazing ice creams, my favorite is the Oreo Ube. There is so much to eat and buy here even though the shop is relatively small compared to general asian markets (like seafood city, etc.) Love this place, and I'm going there today to buy some more sinigang! I ordered a whole lechon for Christmas last year and paid weeks in advance. I live 30 minutes away from Mabuhay, as there is no Filipino food close to me. When I got there mid-morning as scheduled, they told me the lechon won't be ready until 2pm because their guy doing the lechon ran late by 4 hours! Needless to say that ruined my Christmas lunch. Had a customer next door and decided to have lunch here today. I chose a 1 item with Chicken Adobo. Came with a cup of white rice. This was very good and temp hot. Easy to find. Parking, plenty. Ordered a whole pig with ease, 200 lumpia & 2 mango cassava cakes. The mango cassava cakes were deemed the best desserts. I docked a star because they were NOT clear with their delivery policy. I went in store the day before my party to confirm everything & no issue was brought up. The day of the party, when they called to confirm drop off time they tell me I need to pick up the cassava cakes & lumpia, that they only drop off the pig. I tried to explain the inconvenience but idk they just kept reiterating that they only drop off the pig, so ok the day of I was able to find time to go in store & pick up the rest of my order. When they delivered the pig, they didn't even have two people to carry the pig out. So ok, my cousin & I went to get the pig out of the car, at the car I was disappointed to see plenty of room where the pan or pans or lumpia & cassava cakes could've fit. Price, wasn't bad. First time coming here for breakfast. I'm not sure if this is the same place that used to be on Buchanan Road in Antioch. We ordered the lonsilog breakfast, chicken adobo 1 item plate and 2 combo plate bistek and chicken adobo. The overall service was quick and they women were very nice. Food was absolutely delicious! I will return and ask them if they make their sausage in house because it tasted so much better than the longonisa you get from the freezer section. I am always asked where do I get my delicious lumpias from at parties, catered events, potlucks, etc. My secret is Mabuhay! They have yummy lumpias- people rave about them and always the first to go despite me ordering 100 of them! The regular lumpias are good, but what I really like are their fat( as opposed to the thin pork lumpias) vegetable lumpias. I can eat them all day! Crispy hot and filled with shredded cabbage, carrots and peas and I think a bit of corn ( idk what else but I remember those). Soooo good. These are a bit more expensive like 1.50 each I believe so I order 20 at a time. I would order more if it was a bit cheaper. I order these for my vegetarian friends and for myself-lol! I like to have both at parties bc I like to munch on both too so I figure others would like to try both types! I have ordered pancit and chicken adobo, and guisado before and all are good ( they have a deli area where you can order a plate). I support local small businesses like this! I always spread the word about Mabuhay and easy to do when guests love the lumpia! So now during holidays like new years, or Super Bowl -expect a long line out the door ( I'm not kidding!) all the way to the back of the store- that is a loooong line! A helpful tip: so go a bit earlier than pick up time if you have a party scheduled at a certain time. Second tip: don't cover the lumpia completely with foil when you get it hot which due to steam it can make the lumpia soggy. So open the foil on one side and it will stay good. My husband and I were in the mood for Filipino food. We didn't have a very good experience with a Filipino Grocery and Restaurant located in Pittsburg. We were very happy of their service and hospitality at Mabuhay. The young lady serving us was very friendly towards my husband which made me feel happy as there was no sign of racial tension like there was at the place in Pittsburg. I used to go to Mabuhay a lot for their combo takeout. Through the years, our family noticed they put lesser entree in their combo plates. We just laugh about it. We just don't go to Mabuhay as much anymore. We go to Island Pacific ever since as they give lot more on their combo plates. At least, we feel we get our money's worth at Island Pacific. (They also have great grilled Pompano, squid and Tilapia!). My brother has yearning for a Silog for breakfast today. I urged that we can pick it up at Island Pacific. He insists to go to Mabuhay since it's very close to our house in Brentwood. Big mistake! He ordered over the phone. He got two orders of the TapSilog. He asked to add two Longanisa for both orders. When we picked it up, Mabuhay charged us $25 each! $50 for two breakfast combo of fried rice with tapa and 2 longanisa sausages! We complained that their two item combo is half the price of that, but they said Silog is cooked to order. Really?!?? Will never go back to that place ever again for combo plates! Been here the last few Saturdays although I wish I could be there on Fridays. Why Friday? Commercially cooked Filipino food are greasy! Commercial cooking don't discard fats and excess like we do at home. If I had my way, I'd come on a Friday, freeze their meat dishes, remove all solid fat for my family to enjoy the less greasy version. On a good note, their bistek is a family favorite! Beef is tender and flavorful. All other dishes we had were delicious! Their lumpiang Shanghai could use a better wrapper. And it would be perfect if their meat dishes didn't have a lot of sauce. Igado should be on the dry side but theirs is soupy, like all their meat dishes, for profit purposes I guess. I would prefer paying more than getting excess sauce in my container. They have a variety of desserts! I'm a fan of their puto flan. It was cooked perfectly! Soft and not too sweet. They also have assorted cassava cakes: Ube, mango and plain that are good! They're just a tad thin in consistency. Order your silogs way ahead of time cos I waited a long time for my tocilog even though I called ahead. They were busy and it's a good sign. Again, the tocino was half fat half pork! Won't order that again. Service is friendly. Such hardworking family. I checked out Mabuhay yesterday, 5/10/22 (Tuesday) and bought lunch. I had the combination plate of rice, bistek and dinuguan. I must say that the dinuguan was seasoned perfectly - saltiness and acidity just blended well. (Being Ilocano, I am very particular with the seasoning of my food specially the meat and the vegetable dishes. I do not like them sweet. Ilocano food is savory. Some other regions put sugar on their dinuguan, adobo, etc.) Mabuhay is worth the drive from San Jose where I live. I happen to have a business meeting next block to the store.
