So...this place is not Devonshire. There are stark differences between the professionalism you will find here and the sister location in Devonshire. Here, the service was scattered and confused. We ordered our starters and mains together, but didn't receive our main course until after requesting it...nearly 15 minutes after finishing our food and drinks. The food was good, but the expediency of our service was less than impressive. Between the time it took for us to receive our mains and the time to finally get our checks, we were hungry again. I had high expectations for Mac and Wild, but I'm not sure that they were met to be honest. The restaurant itself has a lovely ambiance; good for a date or just catching up with a friend. The service was good as well. The servers were friendly and attentive. So why was I disappointed with Mac and Wild? The Venimoo burger! I'm unsure who voted the Venimoo as London's Best Burger 2016 because it's not even close to being in the top 10 burgers I've had in London. My burger was literally cold, not just room temperature, but actually cold. It might just be me, but something about a cold venison patty is unpalatable. The burger itself is served on a tray (why?) and when it comes out, the sight of the squished bun on a large metal tray is just sad. To top it off, it's just bland. On the up side, we did enjoy two things: the haggis mac and cheese and cheesy chips. If you do come here, I would highly recommend the haggis mac and cheese! (It's probably the only reason I would consider coming back.) It's incredibly rich and hearty; perfect for a winter's night. Om nom nom. I had never heard of Mac and Wild, until my lovely yelp friends booked a table here for their book group. Now I am sooo glad we came. They serve truly gorgeous Scottish food, and have a large range of whiskeys to go with it (as well as cocktails and wine if you're not a big whiskey drinker.) - We started with haggis pops - they came with a gorgeous dipping sauce. This is probably the perfect way for haggis virgins to give it a try. - Order the burger. You can have it with a layer of deep fried haggis in breadcrumbs and it is so, so good! If you're not sure if you fancy it, take a peek at my photos and drool. You can also try in sans-haggis if you not an adventurous eater. - We tried ALL the sides (because they all sounded brilliant...and they were all gorgeous.) - The Mac and cheese with haggis and truffle oil was really good, but a bit rich. I always appreciate a good dram. On its own or with a drop of water. Pairing whisky with food is not as popular as wine pairings but after visiting Mac and Wild I am convinced that it can work well. Very well. The main thing that brought me to this Scottish Restaurant was the famous Veni-Moo which holds the proud title of Londons Best Burger of 2016 and - for what I know - fair enough. I find The venison patty much mote characterful than the regular beef one found in burgers - and that is what sets the event for me. The meet plays a really dominant role which makes the burger feel authentic, the rest of the ingredients providing support. Dont get me wrong - the cheese adds a lovely aftertaste and the pickles with onion are a delightful compliment to the umami blast from the meat. I liked the burger so much that I decided to go for a second round, this time opting for the Venison Steak with a suggested pairing of Laddie 10 - classic Single Malt by Bruichladdich (a reputable and progressive distillery from the Hebrides). Sceptical at first I soon found that the spirit really compliments the steak to create a really awesome experience. Both the whisky and the steak were great on their own but also when combined. Honestly? Super disappointing. We saw the good reviews and had high hopes for the restaurant, but the food was just soooo mediocre. So inedible that we stopped eating a few bites in, paid and then went to a different restaurant. Felt like throwing money in the garbage, but better than force feeding my wife dry, flavorless meat. I got a 370g ribeye and mac & cheese and she had the burger. Both of our meals were dry (didn't know that it was possible for a medium rare steak to be dry) and surprisingly small (don't be fooled by the close up pictures). The service was average - nice guys, but restaurant was busy enough that our food was cold before we were asked about it. Just disappointing. We went for an impromptu Sunday roast lunch and enjoyed it. I had the pork belly roast, and my bf had the venison roast. Both dishes were solid -- great Yorkshire pudding and vegetables all around. We were here in April and loved it so much that within that week, we came here twice!!! All about the food: - awesome mac and cheese with a little twist (haggies and truffle oil), the truffle oil wasn't overpowering and makes it work! - Venimoo burger is so juicy and delicious!! - Venison strip - nice piece of meat, cooked to perfection, not game-y at all (at least to me). Add the bone marrow sauce, yum!! - Haggis pop was very good - Beer stick - this is just like a beef jerky, wasn't my fav - Good selection of drinks/beer Come by and enjoy some delicious meat!! Like the name suggests, Mac and Wild, a Scottish-inspired culinary adventure, is quite wild - in a good way! Known for their delicious venison dishes, as well as their fresh take on the classic beef burger, Mac and Wild presents traditional Scottish food in a modern manner. According to their menu, all their venison is wild, and hunted on the mountaintops of Ardgay, while their produce and other ingredients are mostly locally sourced. My friend and I stopped by Mac and Wild for a late lunch and we were pleasantly surprised at the service and restaurant design. The distressed wood tabletops add to the rustic, wild décor, and the wait staff was friendly and attentive. We started with "wee plates" of haggis pops, perfectly peppery and delicious. I enjoyed a starter of the heritage tomato salad, fresh with goats curd, radish and crispy sourdough croutes. Refreshing and jumpstarted my appetite. We opted to share the venison tartare, complete with candied rosemary (an interestingly delightful touch), kohlrabi and piccalilli puree. The venison Chateaubriand was incredible. Tender, moist, and cooked to perfection. My friend had to try the Veni-Moo, which was listed as UK and London's Best Burger 2016. With one beef patty and one venison patty, the flavors of the meat combine to create a juicy burger, and the cheese and caramelized onions sealed the deal. I may have stolen a bite! The haggis mac 'n' cheese was also a big hit with us, as the rich and creaminess of the cheese blended with the peppery haggis. Truly unique, and unlike anything I've tasted before. Despite the fact that I seem to have dated everyone and their uncle in 2016 (spoiler alert: I have) I have been in love with the same human for a year seven months and two weeks, and when he suggested we come here for burgers (literally the one thing that gives me anxiety in the world, what with... you know... all that gluten and red meat and... CARBS!) I accepted without so much as a blink, because see above re: unrequited love. ANYWAY. Here we are. Low lighting. His sweater clinging to the gains. These burgers which are the stuff of sonnets.. A bottle of the house red, which by the way DELISH. Like ew on house wines, amaright, but someone suggested we try it and it was absolutely arrite. And these burgers. I mean, I loved my human before but now... and then we had whisky, which of course it's the perfect thing to do when you're already shitfaced and you need more reasons to fall in love with his blue eyes and the beard and the lips... It was 11 am on a beautiful sunny Saturday, and what better way to start my Saturday than with brunch! I have already been to the Mac and Wild branch in the city, so I was excited to try out their Fitzrovia branch.Mac and Wild host their brunch every Saturday and Sunday from 11 am until 4 pm, and I started the brunch in full swing with a glass of Buckie royal. The Buckie royal is a mixture of buck fizz and prosecco, for £18 per person, you can make your brunch a boozy bottomless one. To start the brunch, I had a crushed avocado on toasted sourdough bread with poached eggs and smoked salmon, which is produced in Inverawe. The avocado is ripe and is a great combination with the salmon and poached eggs. The Salmon used is fresh and pure and tasted great with a sprinkle of pepper. I always thought Scottish Salmon is the best! A must-have from the menu has got to be the full Scottish breakfast. You cannot come to this authentic Scottish restaurant and not order a full Scottish breakfast! With Portmahomack bacon from Petley farm, homemade tattie scone, white pudding, black pudding, mushrooms, Lorne sausage, scrambled eggs and bone marrow beans. The full Scottish breakfast is certainly different from a full English breakfast, but I love trying out things that I have never eaten before. I found the Scottish breakfast more refreshing with different textures and tastes, in comparison to a full English breakfast, which is usually full of grease. I absolutely loved trying out the white pudding, especially once it was dipped in the bone marrow beans sauce. Also, be warned that the beans are on the spicy side.After about 2 hours of bottomless drinking, I would recommend trying out their fresh green juice with apples, fennel, cucumber and ginger. Rich in flavour and antioxidants, this juice is sure to aid in curing a current or pending hangover. The one thing that I love about the Fitzrovia branch is the vibe, as it is a lot smaller than the Mac and Wild in the city is has a more intimate feel, and this branch is great for brunches and meeting up with a close or old friend. It's rare for me in London these days to stumble across something totally new and unheard of but this is exactly what happened to me last night. En-route from one over crowded, over popular West End bar to another potentially over crowded, over popular West End bar I literally stumbled across this place with a friend. The unassuming façade could easily have been missed and if I had not been paying attention to the HUGE Scotch Egg that was being presented to one set of the diners outside, I would have done just that, missed it. Fate. We were only looking for drinks and this place at the time, was relatively quiet and appeared to be a wine bar. We innocently asked if we could stay for drinks and were pleasantly greeted and allowed to sit outside. The first thing that struck me was just how friendly the team were. All of them. Like, SUPER friendly. We ordered our drinks and were presented with menus. This was not a dinner, this was after work drinks so we went for light bites. The Scotch Egg (obviously), cheesy chips and bread with venison oil. Firstly, the Scotch Egg was probably one of the best I've ever had.....and I've had quite a few Scotch Eggs....The Cheesy Chips were terrific. The Cheese was delivered in Molten state in a little tub to the side which was not what I was expecting but enjoyed thoroughly. Let's take a second to talk about the bread and oil. Lovely, freshly cooked bread and venison oil. The team were RAVING about the oil. We were told it would be the best thing we'd ever had since sliced......well you get the idea. Whilst it was very nice oil, I have to say I wouldn't have been able to tell that there was anything particularly unique about it. I'd recommend it, for sure but it won't blow your socks off. A lovely evening in the company of the lovely team (they attend you often and with such a lovely personal level of service it becomes very much part of the experience) was drawing to a close when my friend noticed a pudding being delivered to the very same table which drew my (Scotch Egg) attention in the first place. We decided to ask for the menu. The "I shouldn't but I will" was the pudding she had seen. Chocolate pudding with salted caramel ice cream....nothing particularly unusual, again, the team were raving about this dish so we took their enthusiasm with a pinch of salt (theres a joke in there about salted caramel but I will resist the urge). Honestly, this was the best pudding I have ever had. There's not much else to say about it really. Simply the best pudding ever. Think of the thickest, richest, most cornflake based chocolate cake ever and your imagination has only brought you to about 50% of the reality of the situation. A superb experience for a special someone's birthday dinner last week. Said someone loves whisky and likes their meat to be sustainably sourced - so this was all set to impress and win me some brownie points! It didn't disappoint and our double date foursome cosied up at a candlelit downstairs table. The food was top-notch - I was glad my guy persuaded me to try venison instead of beef as it was so juicy and tender (and slightly cheaper!). You can tell the meat is high quality and they take great pride in noting exactly where it came from. The drinks selection was right up our street too - a whisky cocktail started things off nicely and a malbec kept it going. Two of us finished up with a wee dram from their impressive offering; the other couple went for more cocktail action. I've already got my eye on the whisky flights for our next visit! There's a fun atmosphere to the place that meant our (loud) giggles blended into the hum, and the service was spot on. It was my first attempt with venison and it was great. The tartre was juicy, the steak perfectly cooked. Too bad the chips were just ordinary, and the mousse dessert a bit lackluster. I really wanted to love Mac & Wild. I had been looking forward to it, and I probably had much too high expectations, but it just didn't hit the spot. The venison was ok, although not a patch on what you get in most restaurants in the highlands, and nothing special. Same goes for the cocktails. The gravadlax starter wasn't very flavorsome, which I'd definitely expect from Scottish salmon, and just ended up being disappointing and unappetising. I might have just gone on the wrong evening, but it was a pretty expensive wrong evening. The place is very cosy, and the staff were polite for most of the night, although they took forever to take our order or bring our drinks. It wasn't the best end to the evening when despite offering us another round after our meal, in the 15 minutes it took to bring them, another staff member asked us to vacate the table (and no, we weren't aware we had a time limit). Which meant we awkwardly rushed through our drinks because we were hyper aware that they wanted us gone. Unfortunately, won't be rushing back. read more

We've been here 3 or 4 times now, and had consistently excellent experiences. It's pricier than we normally would go with (although roughly in line with averages in this pricey bit of London), but it's rather good value for money. The haggis pops (deep fried bites of this oft-maligned delicacy), grouse terrine and scotch egg are excellent appetizers. We've had the venison and beef chateaubriand each time for mains, and both are always excellent. All the sides--especially the haggis mac n' cheese--are great. On our latest visit, we also tried desserts for the first time, and the impossibly chocolatey "I shouldn't but I will" was genuinely delightful. Great, friendly and unpretentious service (the latter being particularly hard to come by in Fitzrovia...!!). We'll be back soon. read more

FOOD Lots of quality venison that is priced really well. Also do beef. Sides are just as tasty - particularly the mash, never had mash so good before. I had the Veni-Moo burger which, doesn't need much description other than it deserves is best burger 2015 crown. So keen to come back and have a massive venison chateaubriand. DRINK Just had the Malbec which was awesome but they've also got some outstanding whisky brands too. VIBE Very cool but not over-done or over pretentious. Same for their staff, just cool people who know their shit. Could easily work for a work dinner, date,dinner with friends/fam - anything. I don't understand!!! The Venimoo burger was voted best in London??? How?? It was dry, fairly flavourless and the bun was too thick. I've been here only once but it was amazing and my two companions also agreed. We all ordered the venimoo burger cooked medium-well with some pink. Absolutely mind blowing. Two patties made of beef and deer. I could have eaten a second but that would be my taste buds talking and not my stomach because after combining the burger with a beer and fries and sharing the haggis starter, I was very full. However one of my companions with much less sensibility and self restraint almost ordered a second and had a pretty serious debate for 5 minutes. That's how good it was. The burger was really stacked so I ended up eating the burger open-faced, one patty on one bun, and the second patty on the second bun. Went there on a Monday night at 8 - had made reservations that they couldn't find. But they were great about it and seated us soon. We loved the fish bites, haggis pops and cheesy chips to start. I had the broth - oh my god! Could drink 4 cups of that! So amazing! We all loved our burgers (though we have had better). The haggis Mac and cheese is amazing and the dirty mash is just ridiculously good. We also had the venison round - was ok. I was very excited to try Mac and Wild as I had heard great things, however I was underwhelmed. I found the menu to be a bit small/gamey, so I ordered the Venimoo burger. The patties were so thin and dry, and the burger overall lacked flavor. I also ordered a side of chips (fries), but found they were extremely average. I will not be returning. read more

I go here for lunch every few weeks and it's meat heaven. Best burgers in town. And it's the only place in London I've found that does proper bone broth (72 hour slow cook, delicious). Service is always friendly, crowd is young and cool, and the place itself has a beautiful dark-wood-and-leather hunting lodge vibe crossed with a modern restaurant.
