I had a damaged hard drive that I wanted to recover data from. Another company quoted me at $3,500. Found Tam through a google search, was happy I wouldn't my have to send sensitive data through the mail. That drive as beyond repair, but I remembered I had an external hard drive that had the same data on it at one point, but was not on the drive when I brought it to Tam. He was able to recover all the deleted files, and though that drive was corrupted, Tam found a great new one at a reasonable price that works with both my Mac and PC. Total I ended up spending was 10% of what I was originally quoted! So happy! Thank you for saving my priceless data, Tam! P.S. I suspected a failing power supply so I called around different places for quotes -this shop responded promptly gave me a quote and no run around. Tam is being deceptive in his rebuttal of 6/4/23, which reads like a recycle of his previous remarks. EVERY single thing I've stated in my reviews and updates regarding Mac Advantage is 100% true. If you want your laptop held hostage as they raise the price beyond what was agreed when you dropped it off for repair, this is the place for you. If not, look elsewhere for computer repair. If you don't want to read the long story, I'll just say here and now that there is no better place to have an Apple product repaired. They're very fair priced, have always been done earlier than expected, and have done all repairs and adjustments perfectly. I recommend them as the very best in the business. Now my latest story: I have an old laptop that is used as a backup for audio work. Field recording, in-office play back for clients, etc. It's been reliable, and is actually perfect for the job as I know it well, and can get it up and going quickly by using tried-and-true programs -- but the problem with older computers is that they are prone to hard drive failure. After years of use those spinning little discs eventually wear out, and you find yourself either dead in the water, or dealing with symptoms like 10 minute boot times, corrupted files, etc. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE A BACKUP STRATEGY! Anyway, the laptop began exhibiting the signs of drive failure, so I took it to MacAdvantage for a drive replacement. After a quick diagnosis to verify the hard drive was failing, a new one was installed. The new drive was an Apple Fusion drive, which is a combination of a mechanical spinning disc hard drive and a solid state drive (SSD). It was the most logical choice given the age of the laptop and the price of the drive. I had the installation done, it was ready 2 days earlier than expected (1 working day, actually), and was presented to me with the latest software the laptop was designed to run. I used my TimeMachine backup to complete the project, and everything has run just as before -- except the new drive is WAAAAY faster, and the boot time has been halved (from the startup time that was normal, not the 10 minutes that heralded the demise of the original drive). I was very impressed with the huge increase in performance, and at a price that was very close to what the old drive would have cost. A purely SSD drive would have been even more impressive, but for what this workhorse does, I think it would have been overkill, and somewhat more expensive. I was surprised that they knocked off an hour's worth of labor because I personally did the transfer of data from my backup -- but this discount shouldn't have shocked me. They are scrupulously honest and fair, and that's always a relief when dealing with repairs on complicated equipment. I've used MacAdvantage for repairs over many years, and recommended them to friends and colleagues. They have always done perfect work, at prices better than Apple, and far quicker. I've loved Apple products since my Iic (and I still miss my old Apple IIgs sometimes), and I'm not knocking the Genius Bar, but being a Genius is one thing -- being a Genius with years of experience is another. read more

I came here after seeing a random ad on Facebook while looking for someone to fix my wife's laptop. Full disclosure I may have been the reason for the laptop not working. I facebook messaged them explaining to them the situation, and I got a response the same day they were on vacation but they gave me an excellent reference of what to expect if I decided to go with them. This Monday 11th of September I dropped the laptop, the following day Tam, called me to let me know they had fixed the issues and everything seems to be working ok. I took my daughter's MacBook Air to another local retail computer repair company that specializes in Mac's to get the annoying malware off her computer. I paid more than I did at MacAdvantage and the issue was not resolved. I took the computer in to Mac Advantage hoping that they could fix the problem. They were polite and professional. The service was performed on schedule and the problem was fixed. YES!!!! I even had them replace the charging port on my iPhone 6s. I scheduled this service and after ordering the part ahead of time; my iPhone was repaired in a couple of hours. I am so happy to have found Mac Advantage. My baby macbook air (11inches, mid-2012) had battery issues since 2015. Every time I brought it with me it would have trouble starting up. Admittedly, I dropped it a few times but thankfully it's resilient and still serves me 8yrs going! I thought I needed the battery to be replaced but Tam fixed the issue and saved me from having to purchase a new battery! I super appreciate that since covid times and I'm also starting grad school. Best computer repair service hands down. The owner, Tam, was so efficient, he should be called an award-winning Mac Magician. My brother bought two Macs - one on Ebay (really broken and in bad shape); and one from Amazon (In fairly good shspe). Tam repaired both within a week and at a very reasonable price. This review is long overdue. While on a vacation in Northern California, I had difficulties with my MacBook. I searched on Yelp, and I came across this place. Honestly, what a find. I knew I had made the right decision when I pulled up. The location is definitely not one that you would expect - it is a house that you just walk into. I was immediately greeted by Tam and was asked what I needed help with. I told him my problem, and he was completely honest with me. He told me that the problem would not be too hard to fix, and he quoted me a very reasonable price. I figured most computer repair places are just out to get your money, but not here. He sat down with me and answered all the questions I had. I asked him for an estimate of how long it would take, and my MacBook was ready before then. I was extremely satisfied with the work, and my laptop was like new again. Tam even gave me some tips on how to avoid the problem next time! Unfortunately, I do not live in Northern California and have had problems finding a place like Mac Advantage in my area. Tam and his staff are incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, kind, and truly upstanding professionals. He's helped me on a number of occasions with problems that I've had with my Mac, and I've always appreciated Mac Advantage's on-point analyses/evaluation of the problem, clear explanation of the solution, quick turnaround time, and fair prices. In the past, I was leery of having to take my car in for maintenance or my computer in for technical support, because I've been burned before by dishonest service providers who often prey on unsuspecting customers. I stopped in yesterday for some advice regarding my Macbook Pro. As I was checking in and giving them my contact information, they performed some quick diagnostics then and there and told me what was wrong. They gave me clear advice regarding the best course of action, and provided me with some documentation from Apple about the history of the known issue with this model. And they recommended against fixing it! Too costly of a repair for such an old computer. All of this at no cost! I was in and out within 5 minutes with all the information I needed to decide what to do going forward, and though they didn't make any money off of me, they were extremely helpful and gracious. They have been in business for over 15 years! This is definitely due to their honesty and dependability. A small business does not survive that long without doing something right! Tam and everyone at Mac Advantage went way above and beyond to fix our watered damaged MacBook Pro. We originally went in for data recovery, and Tam mentioned that he could give us a quote on the full repair. His quote was over a hundred dollars less than Apple's lowest estimate. He was easily able to restore all the data we thought would be lost, and then repair the computer to like-new quality. Aside from the obvious technical skill and knowledge Tam demonstrated, his patience and commitment to customer service really stood out to us. We strongly recommend Mac Advantage to anyone in need of any data restoration or Apple repair. The whole team was outstanding, the pricing is beyond reasonable, and the service was outstanding. How charming is it to walk up to a residential urban house and be invited to enter without knocking, knowing that on the other side of this door is a handful of young professionals and experts that are there to hep you? I have been treated with respect and attention both in person and on the phone with these folks. I'm surprised I did not write a review on Tam and his crew! Been going to him for over a decade and will always return unless he moves away or is hired by NASA... That stated, the saying that you can tell if a person loves the work that they do by how great the finished product is reflects highly on Tam and his young crew! If only APPLE could operate like him! We've bought our current iMac from him a few years ago and when we had a huge issue last year with our iPhotos (ugggh) HE was able to use his magic (w/o a wand) and voila!!! we got our photos back! Unfortunately, our OS system is not current to use the recent photo software since Apple went away from iPhoto (sighs) but Tam was able to fix it - and do what we thought was impossible. We thought we had lost thousands of photos and important documents but NO!!! Super-Tam came to the rescue! Maybe he should have a cape and suit because he IS a superman! Took my iBook to Mac Advantage in October 2009 (after a major OS update permanently disabled Firefox) based on Yellow Pages testimonials and way better customer service than a Santa Rosa competitor I'd used previously. We discussed if it was worth salvaging a five-year old machine and I decided to try for a couple more years. Tam and his cohorts installed a new memory card and detected an imminent hard drive failure, which they replaced and thankfully managed to retrieve all my data. Their work was done quickly and proved effective until Murphy's law kicked in a week later and the machine wouldn't reboot. Tam diagnosed a logic board failure, refunded the price of the memo card and gave me good advice about buying a refurbished MacBook Pro from http://Apple.com. When it arrived he immediately found time to again retrieve all the data and load it into the new machine while I waited, charging only a hour for the effort. Technicians here get it and know what to do to get your mac back up and running. However, that does not translate to the folks that you meet at the front desk - the service desk got the hard drive type and price wrong , added an hour for data recovery that was not needed and did not select the correct OSX for the tech to install - a second call to the technician resolved the hard drive and labor costs but still missed on the OSX requested. Just need better communications skills on the front desk to ensure they get the very capable techs to get the job done right the first time. Still recommend them - just make sure you communicate directly with the techs before you proceed with the work. read more

Tam Nguyen gets my highest praise for honesty and fine workmanship! Last year, I had another shop replace the hard drive in my MacBook Pro and had nothing but problems even after repeated call backs. After months of major difficulties I took my computer to Mac Advantage, whereupon the problems were diagnosed, some hardware was repaired, the new 10-6.8 system installed and now I have my laptop back and it's operating even better than when it was new! Before I found Mac Advantage, I was just going to buy a new MacBook but they have fixed EVERTHING wrong for less than 600 bucks so I saved about 1400 bucks by having mine repaired.
