My wife tried this new restaurant in the space of a prior restaurant near our house. First off, it is Central American inspired so different than you usually find. We have been to every Central American country except Guatemala, and we can attest to the flavors. They had recently opened in the space after having been in the food truck out front. So, we understood the erratic service. We're sure it will be better as they get a handle on things. The patio is large, off a side street and shaded from the sun. We sat outside after a rain, and it was very pleasant. The interior was a little spartan, but that may change as the get settled. We had the ceviche app which is citrus based rather than tomato and is reminiscent of what we have had in Panama and Costa Rica. However, the portion size was smaller than expected given the price ($12). My wife had 2 pork tacos ($8) and I had the papas y chorizo ($13) topped with an egg ($2) and a side of black beans ($2). We will be back as a change of pace to what we normally find in Latin restaurants. read more

I liked the unique flavor of the fried plantains. I ordered the grilled mahi tacos. Tasty but not a ton of kick. My husband had the chicken fajitas quesadillas. The large order didn't disappoint. The food was good, the service was not! Wanting to dine on a patio on a Sunday afternoon, I remembered that Machetes had one. The patio has ceiling fans, TV, and games which makes it an ideal place to enjoy outdoors. Waiting for about 10-15 minutes after being seated, I had to go inside to ask for our server (even though I wasn't the only table occupied). Finally a young server appeared apologetically. I knew we were in for an interesting service when I ordered a Sangria and she asked what it was...even though it's on their cocktail menu. With our drinks, we also ordered the citrus ceviche appetizer. (BTW, no complementary chips, queso, or salsa). Drinks came and were delicious...highly recommend the spicy margarita! However, 10-15 later she stopped by to see how we are enjoying our food only to look at the table - food free. She asked us if we wanted her to go check on the appetizer. My look and stern response of "yes!", had her appearing back 3 mins later with it. She blamed the kitchen. Ceviche was good! We did ask for plates but they never arrived. Our dinner was delicious (and arrived quickly)...chicken tacos, mahi plate, yucca fries, black beans. My husband ordered an iced tea and each refill came iceless. So I guess ask for ice with your tea?!? If the service was good like the food, I would give more stars. I'm willing to try them again and hopefully I'll have a better review next time. Our girls night choice was to try Machetes. We started off with queso and street corn for the four of us. Thankfully they offered to bring more chips to finish off the dip. Street corn was a favorite at the table. Girlfriends had the shrimp tacos and had no complaints. I had the fajita chicken quesadilla, it was good, however it was a little messy to eat. I had to cut it into portions to try and pick it up to eat. Big chunks of chicken with onions and red peppers with not much fajita flavoring. We did try the mango sorbet which was cool and refreshing. My biggest complaint is adding a charge to use my credit card to the bill!! I know it was only a 1.40 but it's the principle that you charged it before knowing if we were paying cash or using a credit card. read more

Warm, accommodating service carried this visit, even if the meal's pacing moved a little too slowly from cocktails to check. The space has potential, especially with the outdoor patio, but the decor could use more personality and warmth. Food was hit-or-miss. The Oaxaca queso had a thick, roux-like texture that wasn't quite for me. The birria tacos arrived muted in flavor. The consommé lacked depth, the yucca fries begged for a dipping sauce, and the garden rice was forgettable. Cocktails were okay -- we prefer the margarita over the ranch water since it was so tart. Food and drinks were reasonably priced overall, with service from our server being the standout of the night. But not worth the drive for us. read more

What an amazing experience! Saw several people on Yelp pad check this place out so my wife and I decided to go there tonight for a quick date night. It was very impressive. She started with a strawberry margarita and thought it tasted excellent. I was impressed that their beer choices are only four dollars so I had a Negra Modelo. She decided to go with the smoked pork quesadilla while I had the butter poached shrimp that came with yucca fries. Four sides I had the black beans while my wife had the rice. We enjoyed everything we had although I will say some of the things were a little spicier than we would've expected. I should also preface this by saying when it comes to spice level, we are total wimps so most of you will probably think that it's not spicy at all. The gentleman who served us was super friendly and checked on us the right amount of times while never making it feel like he was being overbearing. Their menu is so varied that we will definitely have to go back so we can try some of the other things that they have. read more

I loved everything about this place! We visited on Saturday afternoon around 3pm. The interior is nicely decorated and the service was great. We ordered a Tia Mia drink and the Oaxaca Queso to share. Then, my husband ordered Roasted Chicken tacos and I got the Smoked Pork rice bowl. I do wish the rice bowl had a little more pork, lettuce & tomato. Wife and I tried it for dinner last evening and were very pleased. The Oaxaca Queso appetizer is fantastic - comes with a medium sized bowl of mild salsa and separate medium sized bowl of Oaxaca Queso - and some really big tortilla chips. Plenty for the two of us, and cannot say enough good things about the cheese queso - we both thought it was perfect. For main course I had fajita chicken rice bowl and wife had short rib rice bowl - both were good but the seasoning on the short ribs was a delight - we both really liked it. Plenty of rice but enough protein and pico de gallo in both to feel satisfied. Outdoor seating is protected from setting sun - in other words it is in the shade - and most everyone was eating outside. Highly recommended and will definitely come again. read more

We have been to Machetes several times since it opened and every time has been great! While smaller on the inside, they were still able to accommodate a table of 10 so well! Patio is also wonderful! Drinks have been fabulous- the spicy marg is but notable mention is the Machetes Special. Ok, the avacado pantacones are SO good. That and the peppers could be my whole meal! Loved them every time. Queso was great! Birria tacos were good and flavorful. Chicken quesadilla was better than fajita beef and I liked the thicker more masa like tortilla. Pork tacos were good as well. Stopped by on a whim, glad I did. The smoked pork tacos were excellent, nicely spiced; reminded me of some holes in the wall in rural Mexico while traveling. Really appreciated the rustic hand made corn tortillas instead of the packaged mission stuff. Definitely worth a return visit. read more
